OS X Lion Screen Sharing Slow on MBP 13" (Early 2011)

Hello All,
I've been cruising forums and various posts, but have not seen anything directly relating to the issue I'm having. I just upgraded all my Macs to Lion and when I screen share(SS) from my lion macs at work to my lion macs at home there has been a notable drop in performance.
Here's where it get's stupid though. I can screen share to my Mini with very little to no lag at all from my MacBook Air at work. The Mini is directly hooked to my  time capsule (2008,1TB). However, when I SS into my MBP 13" early 2011(wireless connection) the MBP becomes almost completely unresponsive or delayed to any change by 5+min.
I tried ss'ing into my mini and then from my mini to my MBP 13" and that was at least responsive, but obviously laggy. So what the frick man. Why can't I SS into my MBP from work? This was never an issue when all these macs were running 10.6.8.
I guess I should also mention that the Mini hasn't been able to update ARD 3.5 yet, because of a separate issue that I haven't gotten around to. Is it perhaps the ARD update that is screwing up my MBP13"?
Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem. I think it has to do with the 'server' computer. When I remotely control my other snow leopard computers, it is snappy. When I connect to my iMac running Lion, it is slow. The whole page blinks like it is rendering all text/images/backgrounds all the time. So it seems to be loading the entire frame. On the contrary, when remoted into a Snow Leopard machine, only the word or area that you are typing is blurry, then crisp as it renders. It doesn't try to reload the whole screen since you are only modifying a small portion of it.

  • Lion Screen Sharing Asks?

I'm trying to share the screen of my Lion MacMini located in the other room. Both machines are Lion 10.7.1.
Regardless of which account I use to connect to the macMini, I'm presented with a dialog that says "Ask to share the display. 'mini User' is using the display". This is a hassle, because no one is sitting at that machine.
When I attempt to share the screen with other machines, I can start screen sharing without intervention on the far end.
What determines whether someone needs to be sitting at the machine to initiate Screen Sharing on it?

Scratch that: there is still something wrong. Now, when "Connected as" mini User, I still must obtain permission from someone sitting there to start screen sharing, even though now, no windows are open.
So, as an alternative, I click "Virtual Display" and... and I get logged into _another_ user's account, the one which the machine defaults to because that password is saved in the keychain.
Furthermore, when I click "Ask" and walk over to the remote machine, it says the _other_ user is requesting access, even though I am "Connected As" the correct user.
So to summarize: I cannot start screen sharing in the account that I need to share without intervention -- even with no applications open, and virtual sharing automatically logs into some _other_ user's account.
Next, I opened Keychain Access and removed all entries for the server I'm trying to contact. Then, I "Connect As" and enter the appropriate user name "mini user" and _no_ password, since that account does not have a password. The file sharing connection proceeds. I click "Share Screen" and attempt to use the same user name and _no_password, and the system refuses to accept it.
So, perhaps for Lion Screen Sharing to work without intervention, accounts _must_ have passwords?
No, that's not it either. I went and set a password for mini User, and can log out and log in successfully there. I can "Connect As" with the new password, successfully. But when I try Screen Sharing, even with the correct user name and password, I get an authorization failure. I simply cannot start Screen Sharing without intervention, regardless of what I try.
But wait: maybe the problem was that I was not _authorized_ to screen share? So I started up the "Sharing" control panel and sure enough, only "administrators" are allowed to share the screen, and mini User is a Standard User. I unlock the settings using an admin log-in and click the "+" button... and nothing happens. Darn. So I switch _to_ that Admin account and in Sharing, click "+", and I'm able to add mini User. OK. Now, when I try to screen share, my credentials are _still_ rejected
Finally, I started Screen Sharing by logging in as a "Sharing Only" user, to the Virtual Display. I'm presented with a User selection screen. I click mini User, no password, and I can see the screen.
Gee, this all used to work flawlessly in Snow Leopard.

  • Lion to Snow Leopard MBP 13 Early 2011

    GDay guys,
ive bought an used mbp 13 early 2011 and on the recovery hdd is only osx 10.7.5 but ive seen on the apple site that the mbp 13 early 2011 was deliveried with osx 10.6.
is it possible to downgrade or reinstall to snow leopard?
can i download snow leopard anywhere for free or do i have to buy it?

Depends on what version of Snow Leopard came with the computer. Snow Leopard is only available as 10.6.3 on the retail discs. Newer models cannot boot from that version. You would need the original discs which you can purchase from Apple Customer Service.
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.
To contact product and tech support: Apple - Support - Contact Apple Support.
For Mac App Store: Apple - Support - Mac App Store.
For iTunes: Apple - Support - iTunes.
There is no "downgrading." You will have to erase the drive and install Snow Leopard from scratch or create a separate, new partition on the drive on which to install Snow Leopard.

My MBP is Early 2011 but dunno why cant use mirroring with apple TV, the icon cannot be found. So cannot use mirroring.
I have follow trouble shooting , they recommend to go system preference -> display , thus can find out the mirroring icon if no mean it doesnt support. But according to the web, Early 2011 MBP should be able to use, dunno why.

Just realise I havent updated my OS to mountain lion and this is the reason why I cannot use mirroring before ^^

  • MBP 15" early 2011 with WDC VelociRaptor?

I notice that there is a thread for MBP 15" early 2011 with SSD https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2775423 But, I can't afford that type of SSD with only that capacity, i.e. 250GB. Here, in town, it would cost nearly USD500.
So, I'm start to thinking to choose WDC VelociRaptor 2,5" 10000rpm 600GB SATA III 6GB/s WD6000BLHX http://www.amazon.com/600GB-Sata-6GB-2-5-HD/dp/B003G4I5OA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid =1303127766&sr=8-2 which only USD300 with more than 2 times capacity of SSD 510.
I already used VelociRaptor 3,5" 10000rpm 300GB SATA II 3GB/s WD3000HLFS  on my PC and it is producing excessive heat, so that I should turning on the HDD fan which has 2500rpm.
The question is: will it produce an excessive heat also? since MBP 15" body is aluminum unibody that is perfect conductor to transfer heat. I saw iFixIt website tear it down piece per piece. So, I think it still do able. But is it compatible also?
    thanks.

    Hi n,
I would continue working with AppleCare, because if it turns out to be a hardware issue, you'll want to get it repaired while still under warranty.
Have they suggested/have you done a reinstall of the OS yet?

  • Static electric feeling near palm rests on MBP 13" early 2011

i just purchased a MBP 13" early 2011 less than a week ago. when i unplugged the magsafe power connector after full charged, i get this static electric feeling near the palm rest edges (both left and right wrist area). but when i plugged in the magsafe power connector (even though it full charged) I do not get this electro-feeling anymore. is it something wrong with my new MBP 13" ? Should I send in Apple Care Centre for another new set exchange?

I would take it to an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider  (AASP) for evaluation, or call your nearest Apple Contact Center. Visit the Genius Bar at the Apple Retail Store,  make a reservation.

  • Lion screen sharing breaks mouse for local user.

I think I've discovered a bug. I have a new iMac 27" on 10.7.2 and a MBP on 10.7.2. The iMac has two accounts created, mine is the administrator, my girlfriends account is standard user. She likes to use the iMac with the bigger screen so I retreat to the MBP and use screen sharing to continue working on my documents that are under may account.
The problem is that the mouse will stop working for my girlfrends account when I have Screen Sharing running. Her mouse becomes unresponsive and just jumps around the screen once in a while. As soon as I close Screen Sharing her mouse returns to normal behavior.
    Has anyone heard of this?
I tried creating another standard account as a test, same problem.
    Thanks,
    Ron

10 days with no ideas = apple's new screen sharing in lion is broken.

  • Ichat screen sharing - "slow network"

    Hi
I am trying to use screen sharing between an intel imac and a mac book pro over the internet. Both running latest versions of Leopard. The enable screen sharing menu item is greyed out. Connection doctor has a red cross next to "share my screen" with the message "(slow network)". Same for host multiperson video. Share remote screen has a green tick.
I have enable upnp on my router as recommended elsewhere. No change. Similarly, I have also set Quick Time streaming speed to 1.5 Mbps. No change.
I have tested by internet speeds at www.auditmypc.com:
    download: 9782Kbps
    upload: 526.4 Kbps
Is the upload speed causing the problem? Any tips on how to fix this pls (Virgin Media cable broadband)?
    Thanks

QT is still on 1.5Mps, which I had set before trying the tips suggested here. iChat video still has the 500Kbps setting I gave it as advised.
Oddly, screen sharing is now available even though I am back on wireless not ethernet. This all seems a bit unpredictable and unreliable for something which is supposed to be 'easy' screen sharing!
Thanks again for the help people have given which has (hopefully) fixed this.

  • Lion screen sharing over Internet

I'm having some issues setting up screen sharing.  The problem is that I set it all up and can see the other computer when we are on the same network.  But I cannot see the device when I'm back home and trying to screen share over the internet.
I need to be able to see the screen of my client's Mac while I am at home.
Here is what I've done to set up screen sharing:
Both Macs are running Lion 10.7.3
I have set myself up in the address book of the Mac I want to access. In my address book card I have multiple emails.  One of them is the email that I use as my Apple ID.
I turned on screen sharing on the remote computer and added myself to the list of people able to screen share by selecting my address book card that includes my Apple ID.
    Access is for all users
I have checked "Anyone can request permission to control screen."
On my computer I have ensured that my Apple ID is included in the Users and Groups control panel.
When I am on their network, in their home, I see their computer in the shared devices section of my Finder window.
I am able to request permission to screen share and am able to gain permission when they accept.
But when I get home, their computer does not show up in my Finder window under shared devices.
What critical step am I missing?
    Thanks!

Yes, I didn't say Back to My Mac doesn't let you share the screen over the internet - it does.  But it requires you to know the password of the iCloud account that is signed in on the client's computer, as I've said.  Your client would be nuts to give you that password, as would you be to sign in your iCloud account on his/her machine.  That's not an option.
Here's what Apple says about using Back to My Mac:

  • Screen Sharing: iMac -- 2010 MBP 17"?

I am thinking of buying a 27" iMac to run FCP andI wish to use my old 2010 MBP 17" laptop as a second monitor. Can I use Screen Sharing to do this?

I used my old spider2 to create a new profile for the laptop. IF anyone needs it let me know and I'll be happy to e-mail it out.

  • LION screen sharing and remote log in issues

    Hi,
In Snow Leopard I could access my iMac screen from my macbook and have the iMac restart and allow me to log in and continue to use the iMac.
In Lion I cannot access the log in screen remotely after a restart.
I need to go to the iMac and actually log into it with the keyboard before it will show up again on the network.
I tried to adjust the sharing preferences but nothing is allowing me to manage the iMac and restart it from a different machine.
Once I am logged in the screen sharing works fine. It's the log in issue that is not working for me.
thanks for any help in advance,
    christos

i have not been able to get screen sharing to work at all, which has never been a problem for me. i'm registered as an authorized user on both computers, the passwords are correct, but it keeps telling me that the username/passwords don't work. and this is after the computers have already been "connected" using the exact same passwords and user name.

  • Screen Sharing slows down dramatically after RDP upgrade from 2 to 3

For some reason once we upgraded from RDP 2 to RDP 3 our Screen Sharing has gotten increasingly slow. We are using it in a school environment where the teacher will share their screen with the students, and as we add more students to the share the sharing slows down to become unusable. This problem is intermittent (otherwise I would go though the logs and run a control test), and has only started upon upgrading to RDP 3. Anyone else experience this behavior? I believe we are all running 10.5.x on the OS side.

I also know someone that is having this issue; it was fine with the previous ARD version they were using in the computer lab, but after upgrading screen sharing have slowed down. It's not really that of an issue when its just one computer, but when they put all 30 computers the FPS drops down.
Keep in mind that they were not having the issues before upgrading. I've also been told that, currently, they got a 5 MB connection. I ran a network test and everything seemed fine (or more like I didn't know what was going to tell me that something was wrong, but all the numbers were very low).

  • Lion Screen Sharing with Full Screen apps on Remote Lion

Has anyone figured out how to EASILY work with multiple desktops and full screen apps on the remote mac when Screen Sharing with one Lion mac from another?  All of the standard methods of switching between desktops and full screen apps (swipe, cmd + <arrow>, etc) all take place on the the local Mac, and not the remote one.
The only real effective methods I have found so far are using the dock (not elegant with full screen apps), and removing an app from full screen.  Either way, these methods are clumsy and do not compliment the new features that Lion provides.

You're not going to believe this.
Problem was on my buddy's end.  The  slash key "/" was stuck down on her keyboard.
Sometimes the solution is so far out of normal troubleshooting, you're luck if you ever find it...
Nothing to see here, move along...
