OS X Lion Server upgrade *failed*, now what?

The installation process got as far as registering a message like, "Upgrading Services, failed". The only option was to click the Lion icon for reboot. That, I did, then I couldn't find the 10.7 Server Admin Tools, which I had to download separately. The "Open Directory" part of the Server Admin UI does not have the *expected* start/stop button and the service is stopped.
It would be nice to have a post-upgrade program to checklist what went well, what needs fixing with pointers to resources. It's possible none of my services programs got upgraded.
I got an email receipt with a link to "Report a Problem" which turns out to be mostly a hole for getting lost, but at least it got me here to present feedback.

But do we need all the blows and wristles?
Yes.  Lion Server out of the box does not allow for complex custom configurations short of manually editing text configuration files, which is an ironic step backwards from SL Server considering Apple's commitment to ease-of-use GUIs.
Instead of improving the admin tools that were available with SL Server, they simply removed too many of them.  That would suggest that they've given up on the market for business servers to focus on the market for toy servers for home use, which is a bit disconserting considering that Lion Server's security is also woefully lacking out of the box.  It's hard to figure how any IT professional could take it seriously.
The Internet is a dangerous place to play with a server.  Apple's quest to simplify OS X Server with Lion has resulted in a server package that is dangerously simplistic.  If Lion Server becomes popular for home use, I expect to see a rapid expansion of botnets.

    Hi Fred,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Upgrade failed, now iPhone (3gs) in restore mode - help!

    Please help!
After syncing my iPhone (3GS) I tried to install new software. Backup went ok, however software upgrade failed, now iTunes states my iPhone is in recovery mode and needs to be restored. this happened last time i tried to upgrade software (before 4.0) and after restore I lost all contacts, photos etc. What actually happens during backup - one would assume that all the data goes somewhere so that you have a 'backup'????
    Yours hopefully
    Lindsey :0(

Hi...there IS a backup available to you. If you have "dropped" everything, by for example, pressing the Reset all to factory settings, then everything is gone.....but it is on your friendly computer under iTunes! Highlight your phone in the left column and in iTunes, when it shows your phone data, click on the CTRL and mouse click.....this gives you a pop up window, that gives you the chance to revert to the saved info and woohoo....it will all be back in the phone afterwards!

  • On Windows 7 PC, got the "upgrade iTunes" notice, said sure, but the upgrade failed, now I can't access iTunes "invalid permissions"

On Windows 7 PC, got the "upgrade iTunes" notice this morning, said sure, but the upgrade failed, now I can't access iTunes "invalid permissions"
I wasn't paying attention so I don't know the precise error I got on the upgrade failure.
All other iTunes upgrades have been fine...no brainers.  Done several on this W7 PC.
If I re-download and install a fresh iTunes I assume I will lose my library...true?  Can I find and save off my library so I don't have to "discover" all my music which is scattered all over the PC and a 1T attached USB drive.
Or is there some way to get the iTunes upgrade to successfully restart and install correctly?
    Help!

    Hello there, Konami84.
The following Knowledge Base article provides some recomendations for troubleshooting:
iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows: Unable to install or open
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376
    Check for .dll files
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
    Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
    Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
    Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • What to do when SLS - Lion Server Upgrade & Migration Fail

    Hi everyone,
I've had a tough time over the past week trying to updating my SLS to LS. (It was a slow week at the office so despite the warnings in these discussions I wasn't disturbing anyone, so I thought I'd try...) Both an upgrade to the current running system and a clean install on a wipe of that hard drive stall at the "Configuring Services" "Upgrading services" screen of the set up process. The migration path eventually fails, and as far as I can tell, it seems that the upgrade path just stays there forever.
Don't worry - I'm doing this all on a Super Duper! clone of my primary drive, so I can go back to SLS whenever I need to.
BUT, I can tell that the server's status is at least partially okay, even in this stalled setup state - iChat seems to work on various clients, and I can use Server Admin to see stats and services, etc.
So despite the discomfort of a failed install, part of me feels like I'll be fine with the LS if I can just figure out how to move my old data into the right places for the new system to use it. But I can't find any guidance for that. I'm looking to migrate OD (seems to have migrated fine), iCal, iChat, Address Book, Wikis, Time Machine, and File Sharing (which should be trivial to set up, I reckon).
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks very much,
    Willhaus

Okay, so I've had some marginal success.
After leaving the hung install for a ridiculous amount of time (24+ hours), I realized that I could click the help button, and from the help window click the "further info about Lion Server" link to launch Safari. That gave me access to Software Update from the Apple menu, which then let me install the latest Safari update which conveniently enough requires a restart.
After restart, the Server Migration Assistant kicked in again, but failed quickly in the upgrading services stage. Another restart, and the sever finally booted more or less normally.
The strange thing was that although chat services worked fine during the hung install, all OD-related services stopped working after restarting. Turns out there were no users or groups in OD. Importing them from an OD archive, though, restored them.
So now iChat works great (even the old chat longs migrated successfully), and AFP is properly sharing our volumes across our studio's network. So our server is limping along.
The other services we need that aren't up yet are Wiki and iCal. Some info about those:
Wiki: administrators can log in and see all wikis just fine. That's awesome because it means the data migrated successfully. Any non-admin users can log in, but are then get a wiki-styled page that says simply "No wikis found". It's as if they don't have permissions to see the wikis, even though in Server.app they belong to the groups that the wikis are associated with. I've tried removing and re-adding users to groups, but that doesn't seem to do it. Any ideas how to fix this?
Calendar: While I can't get this to work, it's not like it's completely lifeless. An account in a client Lion iCal configured with the proper Lion settings returns an error that reads:
"The Server is Busy or Unavailable.
"The server at myserver.com is currently unable to handle the connection for account “ Calendars” due to a temporary overloading or maintenance of the server. If this continues you should contact the server administrator.
"You may try to connect to the server again or take the account offline."
As a logged in administrator, in a wiki clicking on Calendar in the nab bar goes to the calendar style page with an unending dialogue box that reads "Getting events from server". And clicking on Calendar from Home page footer takes me to the URL https://myserver.com/webcal with an error that says:
    "Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.
    Apache/2.2.20 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.20 OpenSSL/0.9.8r DAV/2 Server at myserver.com Port 443"
Again, at least I'm confident that the data migrated properly -  I can find all the calendar data in it's proper new location - but either the service won't start or something's not configured correctly. I've tried chaining the hostname and restarting the service about a billion times. I've got no idea what to try next. Any ideas?
    Thank you so much,
    Willhaus

  • IChat/Jabber not working after Lion Server upgrade

I just upgraded our server to Lion today, and along with a slew of other issues, we can't get iChat working!  It worked initially, for about the first ten minutes after the upgrade, but now all I get is the following error message in the server log:
Oct 28 20:47:18 reactor jabberd/c2s[4990]: failed loading authreg module 'sqlite' (dlopen(/var/jabberd/modules/jabberd2/authreg_sqlite.so, 1): image not found)

So obviously it's missing the disco-publish module, but I'm not sure what to do about it, or the authreg module.  I checked the var/jabberd/modules/jabberd2 directory, and the .so file is indeed missing.  Any help is appreciated!

  • Lion server upgrade broke wikis

I had several virtural domains set up on snow leopard server
    mydomain.com1
    mydomain.com2
    etc...
They were all in our dns and working properly.
However, after upgrading to lion server none of the wikis work. Typeing in the url of an old wiki gives the message "Server Error" in the browser, and throws a "nstat_lookup_entry failed 2" message in console.
I have a green light next to Wiki in the new Server App, but a message that says "Error Reading Settings".
Any help with which logs I should be looking at to figure out what is going on would be much appreciated.

I know this is not the thing to do but I am reposting this query in OX X server forum.

    Jeremiah,
We ran into this as well. One of two options:
1.) Just run a repair on the SQL Server installation
2.) Repair the WMI settings on the SQL Server as descibed here:

  • Mountain Lion Server upgrade; "error reading settings"

Just upgraded to Mountain Lion server and now ALL services have an "error reading settings".
For example; I select "websites" and I get the message "an error occured on the server while processing a command. teh error occured while processing a command of type 'getWebAppState' in plug-in 'servermgr_web' "
There are similar errors for every service. I can't turn anything on.
Server can't even read the Logs. it just sits there with "Loading..." displayed.
My web site is gone and even the Groups have been gutted.
I have a backup of my Web site but how to I clean this up so I can even start from scratch  !?!

I have the final solution and fix but beware you may not like it that much.
Having had all of the above problems with more or less everything I finally pieced it all together from various threads. This will fix both the AEBS control and the central services problems.  Dont shout at me for being a bit basic and not coding etc. but it worked for me.  If I can avoid code I do as often as possible as am less likely to balls it up!
This method will loose some data but the main files and users do remain
    The Fix:
    1. Close Server.app
    2. Library/Server  make a copy of Server file under a diff name as software server files and a few others would appear to still be usable and you will have to re download it all again of you dont copy it back in ( I didn't and now have learned my lesson). then delete the whole of the Server file.
    3. Go to Keychain and search all Airport then delete associated keys permissions etc
    4. Delete Server.app and reinstall.
    5. Start new setup and it will migrate properly with no errors. This time a big green tick will appear!
    6. Replace the software update files into the new Library/Server folder if you want to or leave it untill the rest is done
7 Reconfigure any missing bits..... any enrolled devices will have vanished but probably if you have  saved the data from this in Library/Server prior to deletion you may be able to reinstate this but I didnt risk it
This is going to be a total pain if in a large organisation but once working the system is excellent with no swapping from one control set to the other.  As each service is switched on it auto configures the AEBS and no further errors and a joy to work with unless you really like to get into the nuts and bolts.
Hope this helps and good luck

  • Lion Server upgrade question.

I've been looking around for instructions on upgrading from Snow Leopard Server to Lion Server.  What I've found seems odd to me; so I must upgrade "Snow Leopard Server" -> "Lion" -> "Lion Server"?  I feel like I'm missing something here.  However, if indeed this is correct, what happens to all of your data for the services that are only available on the server editions?

Thanks for the response.  We have a handful of licenses for Lion (volume licensing), which I was previously unaware that we would need to use one for a server upgrade; so I don't want to do a "download both" action.  In my case would you suspect that the proper steps would be to 1. Upgrade to "Lion" (then update), 2. Upgrade to "Lion Server" (then update)?
Did you have any issues with Open Directory when you upgraded?

  • Server is setup, now what?

As I posted last week I am in the throes of transition from 2 stand-alone edit stations to 3 clients and Final Cut Server. My server is a Mac Pro xenon Tower that I have put a 120G SSD drive into the empty optical bay to be the boot/app drive running Snow Leopard, FCPServer, and FCP for ingest and occaisional FCP duties. The server has 4 2T drives in the internal bays setup as 2 Raid 1 storage devices, The clients are 27"iMacs on a gigabit ethernet network.
Now what do I do? I have the client software on the iMacs and can log in and see some assets. What I need to be enlightened on is the actual workflow. How do I start a "production"? How to I transfer existing FCP projects and the various elements into the server? How do I make them into a "production:? Where exactly do I put them? The amazing thing about this process is that there seems to be so much that is assumed by whoever wrote the documentation, and there is no info on how to actually USE the FCServer. If there is online documents about this I would appreciate any guidance. Thanks......

In more detail I guess I having a bit of a brain **** about the structure of FCPServer. The folders created for Library, Media etc. What goes there and how do I get it in? For example I have a bunch of video clips and stills that were provided by a client. How do I get them into the FCPS system?

  • Lion Server install fail

I'm trying to install Lion Server on a Lion system.
When trying to install Lion Server the server app installer wants to download additional things.
When it tries, the Server app says ":Can't install Server Essentials because you are not connected to the Internet."
My internet is up and running - that's how I bought the Server app and made this post to the Apple Support Community.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the Server app to see this?
    Thank you.

Hi Wozzar. Check out the following thread from iblueracoon. I had exactly the same issue as you and this solved my problem. All the best:
Correct Answer by iblueracoon  on Jul 21, 2011 1:16 AM
Hi! I've been having this same issue and I had been busting my head about it for a couple of hours. Whenever I went to create a partition to install windows and download the support software, it would pop up that message. The same for whenever I tried running a java application. An easy fix to this would be to go into system preferences > Network, next, create a new location and delete the old one(transfer your connections ofcourse). Then, connect to your current network. Now, just go into "advanced">"Proxies" and disable auto proxy discovery! It seemed to do the trick for me

  • Lion Server upgrade disaster, help restoring Dovecot.

    Hi,
I tried to upgrade the Snow Leopard Server running in my Mac Mini to Lion Server, it was a complete disaster.
I made a Carbon Copy Clone of the hard drive as my backup before performing the upgrade, bottom line is that I went back and re-installed Snow Leopard Server and glad that it's all back up and running as before. The only thing left for me to do is to restore all the emails that was on the backup drive to the main drive.
I tried googling this and didn't get any straight forward answer, how do I restore all the emails from the backup drive to the main drive?
Any help would be highly appreciated.
    Cheers!

  • Activation failed, now what

I am using an Apple TV my dad gave me (2nd hand).   I have reset the settings, and connected to my WIFI.  It tells me activiation failed.  Now what?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds, or resetting it using the reset option under general. You should also try restarting your router.
