OS X Lion: Suddenly can't login to your Mac? [SOLVED]

I went to make some lunch, and left my Mac running. In the meantime it went into sleep. When I got back, it prompted me with my login password to wake it from sleep.
I entered it about 100 times, very painstaikingly and carefully, but it wouldn't log me in! I did not change my password, and I was certain it was right... but it just wouldn't work. It kept shaking, telling me the password isn't right! I thought I'll have to hack my own computer, and lose my files after upgrading to Lion, but stumbled accross a solution!
SOLUTION: http://baumdesign.wordpress.com/2011/08/17/macos-x-lion-cannot-login-after-autom atic-sleep/
It turns out that I had changed my keyboards input source to German, where the z and y have switched places. The link explains why this happens, and how to prevent it from happening again.
Just wanted to share with you all.

I wouldn't trust a NAS with my only backup, but I leave that to you. From now on I'll assume that your data is safe, no matter what happens. If that assumption is wrong, disaster may be coming.
The next thing to do is to locate the FileVault disk image. Log in to an administrator account that works. Launch the Terminal application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Drag or copy -- do not type -- the following line into the window:
user=
Now type the short name of the user acount that you can't log into. It should be one word with no spaces. Press return. Enter the following command in the same way (no typing):
sudo ls -l /Users/{,.}$user/$user.sparsebundle
You'll be prompted for your password, which won't be dislplayed when you type it. That's your own login password, not the other user's. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered, not including the warning.

Suddenly can't login to Wifi on iPad and tried posted solutions with no success.

Thanks, trying to figure out what the ISP might have done is difficult......kind of like trying to operate blind folded with one hand tied behind our back.
We don't like to guess at things, or worse.....get into a series of "try this" and "try that" that only lead to more frustration,  but have little choice if you want to try to continue with this. Your call on that.
    On your MacBook Air......
Open Finder (the smiley face at the lower left of the screen on the dock)
    Open Applications
    Open Utilities
    Open AirPort Utility
Click on the picture of the AirPort Extreme, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Network tab at the top of the next window
What is the current setting that you see for Router Mode?
    Is it "Off" (Bridge Mode)?
If yes, then change that setting to read DHCP and NAT
Click Update in the lower right corner of the screen, and allow a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart, then power it off
    Power off the provider's modem/router
    Wait a minute
Power up the provider's modem router and let it run a full minute
Then power up the AirPort Extreme and let it run a full minute
    Check the network

A particular network user can't login to a mac in a classrom but other network users can. Then the network user can login to other identical macs in same classroom. Anyone seen this before? It has happen twice. Two different teachers in two different classrooms entering the correct user name and passwords and computer won't allow them to login. Then they try in different computers in same classroom and have no problem login.

Yes. I can login with a test user. And any other network user can login as well to this particular mac. Actually the mac has bootcamp and boots into either mac or windows. The same user entering the same login username and password can login into the windows side, but not the mac side.
I had this same issue last semester in another classroom, another mac and a different teacher. This summer I reformatted and imaged that mac and I asked that teacher to login today to that reimagened mac and she had no problem today doing so.

  • How can I login to the Mac App Store?

My wife cannot login to the Mac App Store on her MacBook Pro.  This first happened under Snow Leopard and is now happening under Lion.  I have googled extensively for a solution, but not yet found one that lasts long term.  We have binned a Networkinterfaces.plist a few times and this has given us temporary access to the App Store, but now it's lost it again and we can't even find the plist to bin it!
The error message we get when trying to login to the Mac App Store is, "your device or computer could not be verified".
Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks for that suggestion. I'll remember it for next time.  We seem to have got temporary reprieve, which we think might be due to resolving a conflict between iCal and MobileMe.

  • I can not login in my Mac Pro with my new apple ID?

I installed 10.8.5 but I can not login as administrator with my new(confirmed)password:the new password is not accepted. So what can be the reason but more important: how to solve this nasty problem?
    TIA

The password for logging into your computer is not the same as your Apple ID password. These Apple documents tell how to reset your password for you computer:

  • I heard that if you file share with someone on accident, they can gain access to your mac if they know the password to your mac. Could someone who I accidentally file shared with login to my mac if I did not have an admin password at the time?

I know it was stupid to not have a computer password at the time, but I now do. Could this be possible?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
This would only happen if you choose the whole hard drive as a shared folder, and it's not. By default, OS X only sets up File Sharing in order to share files through the Public folder. You can see which folders are being shared in System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing.
If the whole hard drive is selected as a shared folder, remove it because they can access to all your files without any password. Apart from that, there's no risk, as they can't see any other folder than the ones you chose in System Preferences > Sharing

  • Can you wake up your Mac remotely to control it from iPod using VNC app?

I have the VNC app that allows you to connect to your Mac or PC and control it from your iPod. Your iPod screen displays a miniature version of you computer and by using a selection of tools you are able to do everything on you Mac remotely. The problem is that when you go away or are away from your computer you don't want to have to leave it running continuously so the preferred option is to let it sleep and wake it up remotely when you need to access it. I tried calling Skype on my Mac from another computer but either just leaves a message or rings but doesn't bring the Mac out of sleep mode. This little VNC app is amazing and very useful only if I can get my Mac to wake up so I can connect to it. If not, great app but useless... at least for me.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Kev

How about using SSH to remote secure shell into your Mac? That might wake it up.

  • Windows 8.1 mail app suddenly can't login

Up until just about an hour ago, the simple modern UI version of Mail worked with my icloud mail account.
Now it won't.  Tells me to check settings and login with the login/password combo.  I did that, but it rejects it though the login info I'm giving it is correct.  Checked the support page to ensure that some setting otherwise might need changed, and that's not it.
I suspect that Apple kicked in the 2-step verification and that the mail app can't handle that.
For info, outlook 2013 works fine with it after loading the icloud for windows software.  While Outlook 2013 is a better mail client, I just need a simple one and would like the 'modern' version to work.
    Thanks
    Lloyd

I am also experiencing this issue on my Android device.
Password works fine on icloud.com; I also have two-step verification enabled. A fix for this would be very helpful at this point.

  • Help! I dowloaded an automatic update & now can't login to my Mac!!!

I started with Mac OS X v10.4 on my computer, but set it up for automatic updates. After downloading the latest update yesterday, after I type in my password on the login screen, I briefly see a "blank desktop" view (i.e., I can see the wallpaper that I normally have displayed) and then the screen goes to a "blank light blue" screen before returning me to the log in screen. I've tried running the disk utility but no luck... Does anyone have a suggestion???

If you are ok with using the terminal you can try this, copied from another thread
    +FIXED WITHOUT REINSTALLING OS X+
+Found the install disk, booted from it, and instead of doing archive/install, went to Utilities | Terminal. Note that my laptop's HD is called "Laptop HD", not the standard "Macintosh HD" ...+
+I didn't have a USB drive handy, so I had to get the installer package over using another networked computer and HTTP:+
+On another computer, downloaded the installer package, opened the disk image, and copied the package itself to my ~/Sites folder. Renamed it "fix.pkg" to make for less typing. Right-clicked and selected "make an archive of fix.pkg" to make "fix.pkg.zip". Made sure web sharing was on in the System Prefs.+
+Back on BustedMac, typed the following:+
    +cd "/Volumes/Laptop HD/Users/myuserid"+
    +../../usr/bin/curl http://myothercomputeraddress/~myuserid/fix.pkg.zip -o fix.pkg.zip+
    +../../usr/bin/unzip fix.pkg.zip+
+Now, having the package on the machine, I then did as suggested in a few other related threads:+
    +../../usr/sbin/installer -pkg package.pkg -target "/Volumes/Laptop HD"+
+The package installer then ran (in the Terminal window). It said "Installer: Package name is Mac OS X Update (Intel)" and then another line ... sat there for a minute, then gave lots of errors about kexts not containing code for the architecture specified (which seems odd ... are these PPC-only kexts maybe?). Again, it sat for a few minutes with the fans on and periodic disk activity. Finally, it gave the following message:+
    +"installer: The install was successful".+
    +Quit Terminal.+
+Force-Rebooted (the installer disables the usual system restart menu option, so that's the only choice).+
+For giggles, I held down Command-V while rebooting ... got to the point of the "diskarb isn't ready yet" messages (and actually something which looked a bit alarming about giving up waiting for diskarb), and about 5 minutes later I had my login screen.+
+So, if you are at all adept with the command line, this will give you a way to re-run a failed OS X update without trashing the entire system!+
    +15" MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.10)+
If not I would suggest an Archive and install from the cd. And then run the updates.

  • Suddenly can't get online in Mac applications...

After my toddler switched off my power supply a few weeks ago, I suddenly couldn't get online using Safari, with the exception of web pages beginning with "https"...I took the easy way out and switched over to Firefox, which works fine, as does Entourage for email.
I then realized that I can't connect using Software Update (it tells me it can't connect to the update server) or iTunes either; I haven't tried iWeb but I'm assuming it won't work either.
I have run Network Diagnostics, but it tells me everything is fine.
Any insights? Has anyone ever heard of this? I asked at my local apple store (didn't have the computer with me, though) and they didn't have any suggestions.
    Thanks!
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The fact that non-Apple apps work points to a proxy server setting.
It sounds like you have a http proxy server enabled, but incorrect. All Apple apps will honor the system settings for proxy servers, but third party apps (such as Camino and Firefox) don't - they use their own.
The solution is simple - System Preferences -> Network -> (interface) -> Proxies and turn off the http proxy.
Trashing the preferences will probably fix this too, but that's a brute force approach that will impact other settings on the machine, too.

I changed nothing about my internet or its security settings and as of yesterday, I get an error message whenever I try to access the store. Hi all, first post!
I can't seem to receive any mail from my .mac (mobileme) account through my mail app. other (pop) accounts seem fine and i can access mobile me online. It's giving me a constant fetching mail spinning wheel, for 4 days now. won't show me any account info when i ctrl click either. any ideas would be gratefully received

exact same issue here. I live in Adelaide, South Australia. My iPad, iPhone an Mac all won't send but will receive emails happily. Sending via Bigpond works fine so I am certain that the apple server itself is the problem.
Am waiting patiently for Apple to get it up and running again.
Despite this I can send emails for iCloud on the webpage.

  • When Performing an Initial TM Backup can You Continue Using Your Mac?

I just backed up my MBP to TM and it took a long time. I'm about to start backing up my iMac; can I still be working on it while TM performs the first backup?
    Thanks

Sure - on a slower computer you might notice some keyboard lag but on your G5 there shouldn't be any problem at all. I've never had any difficulties using my computers while TM runs.
