OS X Lion - System Requirements

Hi everyone,
Not too sure if some devvs would be willing to 'bend the rules' of their NDA with Apple, but I am curious as to what the System Requirements are for INSTALLING Lion.
I know I can read all of Apple's lovely marketing and PR pages that tell me:
Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM. The Lion upgrade can be installed on all your authorized personal Macs.
but I would like to know the specifics as to what happens or is needed when you install it - i.e.
Requirement
Details
Install Space
X.XX GB to download?
Free Space
X.XX GB Available
Disk Requirements
HFS+ Partition, HFS+ Recovery Partition
Recovery Partition
X.XX MB/GB ?
In the event of failure...
... downgrade, insert disc...
I am really looking forward to getting Lion Day-1 but am a little cautious as to how 'nanny-like' Apple is being on the whole issue.
Many thanks!

4 GB to download.
With any installer, anticipate up to as much as as twice the space to expand (based on past experience), and 15% of the hard drive (an arbitrary number that in all past Mac OS X versions has been the break even point where the operating system does not slow down) to be free for a full installation.
To downgrade, restore your backup.  You did backup your data?*:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Note, it will ONLY be available on the Mac App Store, unless enough people give feedback here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html This says you'll want to apply the 10.6.6, 10.6.7, or 10.6.8 combo update to install it first on top of an already installed Snow Leopard system if none of those three operating systems is already installed. Snow Leopard will upgrade an existing Tiger or Leopard Intel CoreSolo or higher system system.  So get it while you can, or deal with the sometimes less than reputable used or refurbished Mac shops.  Only Lion will require a Core2Duo, Xeon, or higher system.
Reasons why other distribution methods than the Mac App Store are preferable:
1. In event Apple does not offer a means of making a portable installer which can be used on from any Flash or DVD drive, you'll have to download it for each machine at your internet speed. Also, you'll have to ensure your Snow Leopard CD never wears out (practically impossible),and you keep a copy of the combo update on your backups.  Erase and installs will not be practical.  Your internet connection, and Apple's server will have to have uptime anytime you need to restore it.
2. In event Apple does, a 5 Mbps connection is what is needed to download the installer in 2 hours, let alone additional installion times.
3. Apple did announce at the developer conference the Mac App Store is now more successful at sales than Best Buy or Amazon, or anyone else.  Even so, the last mile has yet to be reached, and goodness knows how long Snow Leopard will be available in retail channels.
Apple has not yet announced backup partition requirements.  Nobody yet knows if their software will or won't be compatible.  You can start by verifying that all your software at least is Universal or Intel, since the net has been humming that PowerPC support may finally be gone, and Rosetta won't be there.  Since Apple hasn't announced the truth of this or not, that's another thing to ask in the feedback link above to ensure that PowerPC support remains.  Quicken 2007 and Appleworks have few comparable alternatives for people to upgrade to.   And Apple has always made Macs run a minimum Mac OS, the one that is presently available new, and none of the older Mac OS  (i.e. if you buy a Mac new after Lion's release, it won't be able to run Snow Leopard).  This past history has left a lot of concern.

If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

Yes, if you set up the new AirPort Extreme using the guidelines above. The 10.6.8 Mac will be able to connect to the AirPort Extreme, but it will not be able to make any configuration changes.
Only the devices listed above can be used to set up and make any changes to the new AirPort.

what system requirement do i need to get os x lion? i got mac os x 10.4.11 right now

Well the primary reason is because it's what Apple recommends. When users vary from the manufacturers solutions is when they have problems. Apple makes it very clear what the system requirments are when they publish:
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)

After I installed OS X Mountain Lion system, I can't use my Safari to log into my online banking and some other websites which require passwords. Can some one please help?

It could be browser incompatibility or something else. When you say you can't log in, what happens? Is the bank website generating an error saying you're not using a supported browser? Does the login form for your bank account display as usual, but once you submit the form to log in it doesn't work? Give me a specific step-by-step of what you're doing, such as...
    1. I load bankofamerica.com
    2. I type in my login
    3. When I submit, the page does nothing
Obviously that may not be your issue, but giving us details like that will help us come to a quicker conclusion.

  • System requirements for Mac OS X Lion

    Hi,
Will Mac OS X Lion work on my Leopard 10.5.8, or do I need Snow Leopard 10.6.6 to upgrade to Lion?
I haven't bought Snow Leopard until now because I've been waiting for the release of Lion, and I just heard that I need Snow Leopard...
Please tell me it's not true.

Mac OS X Lion will be available in July as an upgrade to Mac OS X version 10.6 Snow Leopard from the Mac App Store for $29.99 (US). Lion will be the easiest OS X upgrade and at about 4GB, it is the size of an HD movie from the iTunes Store. Mac OS X Lion Server requires Lion and will be available in July from the Mac App Store for $49.99 (US).
Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, runing the latest version of Snow Leopard. The Lion upgrade can be installed on all your authorized personal Macs.
The Mac OS X Lion Up-To-Date upgrade is available at no additional charge via the Mac App Store to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller on or after June 6, 2011. Users must request their Up-To-Date upgrade within 30 days of purchase of their Mac computer. Customers who purchase a qualifying Mac between June 6, 2011 and the date when Lion is available in the Mac App Store will have 30 days from Lion’s official release date to make a request.

  • What are the system requirements for Lion?

Have the system requirements for Lion been posted anywhere?

This is from the Apple Lion site:
Step 1:Make sure your Mac can run Lion.
Your Mac must have an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor to run Lion. Find out if your current Mac has one of these processors by clicking the Apple icon at the top left of your screen, then choosing About This Mac.
Step 2:Make sure you have the latest version of Snow Leopard.
Get up to date with the latest version of OS X Snow Leopard to purchase OS X Lion from the Mac App Store. If you have Snow Leopard, click the Apple icon and choose Software Update to install the latest version.

    I
got your message about making sure to use the machine specific disk that came with my machine. Unfortunately, Apple no longer sells Tiger replacement disks. I've got a couple of bids out on ebay, and will update when I have news to add to this post.
Thank you for your help, Frank!
To be clear you called the 800 number and explained what the situation was, old machine and lost the original DVD's?
Just checking because if you just called and tried to buy the DVD's they might tell you they no longer sell them but you aren't really trying to buy them your trying to replace the ones that are missing.
Ebay may work but there is a certain specificity to the DVD's required which, even if they seem right, might not work.
Good luck either way. If you get a chance when you get the DVD's I'd be interested in hearing how it all works out.
    regards

  • Why can't Mountain be installed on a 2006 iMac?  I meet every system requirement.

My father would like to go ahead and upgrade to Mountain Lion.  I have upgraded the RAM on his his machine and it meets every system requirement other than it was manufactered in 2006.  I don't see any reason why it can't run the OS.

    Dear Captain,
    MichelPM wrote:
Your father's iMac can run OS X 10.7 Lion, though.
Whoa! He may NOT be able to run Lion 10.7. Only the last of the 2006 iMacs can run Lion due to processor limitations. Lion requires a minimum Core 2 Duo processor. Only the iMAcs that Apple names "Late 2006" have that processor. Here's how to find out:
    1) From your Apple menu, do "About this Mac".
    2) Look at the "Processor information" in the resulting window.
    3) The processor Information must read "Core 2 Duo," not "Core Duo" to run Lion.
If you wish further verification, click on "More Info" in the "About" window. That launches System Profiler; its opening screen looks like this (example taken from a notebook but the info is in the same places):
To run Lion, the Model Identifier must have the code 'iMac5,1" or higher number to run Lion.
While there, see how much RAM is installed. Even if the processor is Lion-capable, a lot of older iMacs have very little RAM by today's standards. 2GB RAM is the bare minimum for Lion. The Late 2006 iMac can use up to 3GB RAM, still dicey.

  • HT4759 I have an iMac, iMac, 10,1 10.8. I would like to have iCloud downloaded to my computer.  Does my computer have the system requirement necessary. I use iCal on my Apple Notebook and Iphone 4S. Thank you!

I have an iMac, iMac, 10,1 10.8. I would like to have iCloud downloaded to my computer.  Does my computer have the system requirement necessary. I use iCal on my Apple Notebook and Iphone 4S and want it to my Mac Desktop to sinc with all my Apple Products. Thank you!

The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mavericks preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is now non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mavericks, provided it meets the requirements.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price (though it's reported to have been removed from sale in some countries so may well cease to be available generally) but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Mavericks (10.9.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.
The requirements for Mountain Lion and Mavericks are:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
      and the supported models are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If you haven't done so already you need to migrate your mail account to iCloud first and do so IMMEDIATELY at the website Move
    Then
Delete your mail account from Mail preferences and set it up again using the Mail Server Information.
Some users have apparently encountered issues using this information in pre-Lion set ups (I haven't), Roger Wilmut has kindly provided instructions for those who find themselves with this problem.

if I am running a mac OS x that is lower than 10.7.2, is there any way to publich my iweb site to icloud (I have an iphone that meets the system requirements)? I'm using iWeb 3.0.1 and previously had my website published to mobile me.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Unfortunately, iCloud does not offer equivalents to Mobile Me’s iDisk, Gallery or Web Hosting services. You will need to find a third party solution to replace these services. You might considerDropBox, SugarSync, MediaFire or any other service that offers online storage. (not all these alternatives offer all the services previously provided by iDisk)
So it won't matter whether you have Snow Leopard or Lion, you will not be able to upload your website to iCloud.
