OS X Lion won't let me resize partitions

I've install OS X Lion a different partition successfully. After realizing that I loved Lion I wanted to downsize my Snow Leopard partition I succesfully do that but now it won't let me expand my Lion partition!
HELP!!!! PLEASE!!!!

I had the same problem too.  I had upgraded Snow Leopard to Lion, but then found out some of my apps would not run in Lion.  So i created another partition and installed Snow Leopard on it so I could dual boot between Lion and Snow Leopard.  The problem was that I didn't leave enough room on my Lion partition to work with some video editing I was doing.  So I tried to enlarge my Lion partition and reduce my Snow Leopar partition but had no success.
I thought that if I deleted my Snow Leopard partition that I would be able to resize my Lion partition to use the entire drive.  That didn't work.
So I tried to boot from the Lion Recovery Partition, but when I tried to apply the changes of resizing my Lion partition it would fail withe a message that it couldn't unmount the drive.
But here is what I did that FINALLY worked (and this was while booted into my normal Lion partition):
Enter the following command into Terminal
     defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled 1
Open Disk Utility
Now there is a DEBUG menu at the top.  Go DEBUG and select SHOW EVERY PARTITION
Now you will see the RECOVERY HD partition under your LION partition.
Select the RECOVERY HD partition and click MOUNT at the top
Now you can expand your LION partition
My guess is that since Disk Utility couldn't see the hidden recovery partition and since that partition is physically AFTER the Lion partition it could not resize.  But by mounting the hidden Recover Partition, then Disk Utility was able to move the Recovery Partition and expand the Lion partition.
Now I just need to create a partian to reinstall snow leopard into ( I will make it smaller this time so I have more room on my Lion partition).
Hope this helps.
And here's a link to the article I used to find out how to show the hidden partion:

    kimoen,
In addition to what Larry said, the Adobe team are working on the Live Rectangle bug which is limited to the MAC versions starting with 10.7 and 10.8, but not 10.9 (Mavericks).
So a switch to Mavericks with a reinstallation might be the way to solve it here and now, if that is an option, in which case you should reinstall after upgrading the OS.
But you may get round it in a couple of ways while using your present OS.
In each case, it is possible to Expand the Live Rectangles to get normal old fashioned rectangles, or to Pathfinder>Unite, or to use the Scale Tool.
A more permanent way round that is to create normal old fashioned rectangles, after running the free script created by Pawel, see this thread with download link:

if you don't mind interrupting the album sync, you can do a hard shutdown of the mac by pressing and holding the power button down for 10 seconds to make sure it's all the way off.
you can then do SMC reset which is described in the following article:

three finger or two finger gesture to move back and forward between pages of file only work on safari, unlike with old os. this new lion won't let me do it. Any help?

I have decided to dedicate this thread to the wonderful errors of Lion OSX. Each time I find a huge problem with Lion I will make note of it here.
Today I discovered a new treasure of doggie poop in Lion. No Save As......
I repeat. No Save As. In text editor I couldn't save the file with a new extension. I finally accomplished this oh so majorly difficult task (because we all know how difficult it should be to save a file with a new extension) by pressing duplicate and then saving a copy of the file with a new extension. Yet then I had to delete the first copy and send it to trash. And of course then I have to secure empty trash because if I have to do this the rest of my mac's life I will be taking up a quarter of percentage of space with duplicate files. So this is the real reason they got rid of Save As: so that it would garble up some extra GB on the ole hard disk.
So about 20 minutes of my time were wasted while doing my homework and studying for an exam because I had to look up "how to save a file with a new extension in  mac Lion" and then wasted time sitting here and ranting on this forum until someone over at Apple wakes up from their OSX-coma.
are you freaking kidding me Apple? I mean REALLY?!!!! who the heck designed this?!!! I want to know. I want his or her name and I want to sit down with them and have a long chat. and then I'd probably splash cold water on their face to wake them up.
I am starting to believe that Apple is Satan.

  • Lion won't let me install Xcode!

    Hi Community,
I just got a new MBP and of course the first thing i did was install the Developer Tools. I went to http://developer.apple.com/xcode/ and downloaded the Xcode3 installer. Everything went well until i opened up the installer. When it takes me to the screen to choose what to install, everything is checked and good to go except the "Xcode Toolset". I try to check it to include it in the download, but it is grayed out and won't let me making it so that when i download the software, i don't get xcode, interface builder, quartz or any of the other developer applications and utilities. Does anyone know what could be wrong? Thanks.

The link i listed is the official apple xcode site. On the bottom right corner where it says "Looking For Xcode 3?" you can click "Download Now" to download Xcode 3. This is what i did. I opened up the dmg and mounted the volume, then I ran the xcode installer. I just clicked continue through the whole thing and accepted the terms. Once it finished downloading, i went to /Developer/Applications and the only thing there was an empty Utilities folder. I uninstalled it, redownloaded the installer, and tried again, but this time when i got to the "Installation Type" page, i checked to make sure it was downloading everything, and found that Xcode Toolset was unchecked and grayed out. Am I making sense?

    The operation has completed successfully.

So here's what I think happened. Upon resizing the OS X volume, a 5th partition was created. When that happens, diskutil removes the hybrid MBR that's needed to activate the EFI firmware CSM (BIOS emulator) which is still presently used for booting Windows on Apple hardware. Upon removing the hybrid MBR, Windows is no longer bootable. So what you probably did was used Disk Utility to reverse what you did by deleting the extra partition. When you do this, diskutil recreates the hybrid MBR but with the wrong partition type code. It sets it to 0x0C, and therefore thinks it's FAT32, whereas it should be 0x07 for NTFS. Disk Utility will then let you run a disk check on what it erroneously thinks is a FAT32 volume, but is in fact NTFS. If any writes are done, which it appears is the case, it corrupts the NTFS file system.
So this is just yet another Bootcamp data loss story, without any warning in either documentation or Disk Utility whatsoever.
What version of OS X is this?
The easiest, but most tedious thing to do is to totally start over with everything: obliterate the entire drive with Disk Utility making 1 partition only, reinstalling OS X and files from backups, use Bootcamp Assistant to resize the OS X volume the way you really want it, reinstall Windows and restore from its backup. All of that can be done in the GUI.
You might still use the Windows install disk to run Windows startup repair. It might fix the Bootcamp volume. The remaining problem in that case is what to do with the large pile of free space, but I'll make those suggestions later once you get to that point.
If Windows startup repair can't fix the Bootcamp volume, and you don't have a backup, then you'll need to download and install testdisk, and read how to use it to try and find your data. It's an iterative process. Once that's done, while it probably won't fix it and make it bootable again, you'll have a basic backup of files. The remaining thing to do is use gdisk remove the broken Windows partition, make a new one that also includes free space you presumably wanted Windows to have, and make a new hybrid MBR adding partitions 2 3 4. Then reinstall Windows, your apps, and restore your data from backups.
So that's the gist. Ask if you have more questions.

  • Bootcamp won't let me remove partition without 10gb free space

I want to free up my mac by deleting the windows partition but boot camp won't let me because I don't have enough free space UGH! I can't get to the selection in boot camp that allows you to check "remove partition" because I keep getting a pop up window telling me I don't have 10 gb free space and therefore can't continue.  This is a real glitch. They shouldn't have the remove partition feature behind this minimum requirement.  Any suggestions around this? I've already deleted everything I can but don't want to keep trying to find more if someone has a better idea. Thanks.

  • Lion won't install on primary partition

I am having problems installing Lion.  I have 2 partitions.  The larger, primary partition, and a smaller secondary partition.  Both have Snow Leopard installs (and up to date).  I can't get Lion to install on the primary partition.  The installer tells me that the primary partition can't be used to start up the computer (and I am currently running on that partition).
I ran disk utility, and still nothing.  Any thoughts?

I'm posting this for anybody else who might have a similar issue.  I installed lion on the secondary partition, booted from that install and ran disk utility again.  I again repaired the disk, this time doing the entire drive (think I had done only the partitions previously). Something was repaired in the partition table and all is fine now. I'm not certain wheth it was the new version of disk utility or the focus of my repair, but all is now well.

  • Selection Tool Won't Let Me Resize Text Boxes?

Whenever I try to resize a text box with the selection tool, it won't allow me to resize. I tried the text tool as well, but it didn't work. I don't want to resize the text, just show text that is hidden. I'm crrently using CS4. Can someone help?

If this is really an area text, then maybe you've just hidden the bounding box. See in View menu how to show it again.

  • CS6 won't let me resize large images?

I'm using Photoshop CS6 to assemble and export a series of extremely high-res tiles. Long story short, they will be used to make up a large map in a mobile app.
I have a pretty tight deadline and I've just been stopped in my tracks by an error I get when I try to scale them up.
Each tile is a layered PSB file, 16384 x 16384px at 72dpi, about 2-3GB in size. All I want to do is scale them up to double their size - 32768 x 32768px.
When I try to do this, I receive the error, 'Could not complete the Image Size command because the result would be too big'.
What exactly does this mean in terms of size (filesize or pixel dims)? What's the problem?
Since I'm working in PSB format and I'm resizing within the bounds of the 300,000px limit, I don't understand why I'm not permitted to scale up to 32768px.
I need to preserve the layers as Smart Objects in order to upscale them... so no flattening.
All I can think of is splitting the files into smaller tiles, but that will probably drive me crazy (I currently have 28 tiles to upscale).
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Yep - it was a combination of a large background layer and a huge vector mask extending way beyond the canvas.
Thanks! I can now successfully get my tiles to the size I wanted.

In Disk Utility I was expecting a dot/divider between the two partitions so that I could resize them. what do you mean? what's not there? the divider? that can't be. please explain exactly what you are seeing in disk utility. first, you can only increase the TM partition using DU if it's the upper partition when viewed in DU. if it's the lower one then you can not increase it with disk utility. secondly, the other partition should be deleted, not just empty. you can delete it using the minus sign in the partition tab in DU. then grab the lower right end of the TM partition and drag it all the way down to cover the free space left by the former 600GB partition. then click "apply".
and and when I select the TimeMachine partition is says 'This Partition will not be modified'.

  • Mountain Lion won't let my computer boot..

I installed mountain lion, and it installed then when I restarted it, it sat at the gray Apple boot screen. I held option and ran disk utility to repair anything and nothing was wrong. Now I held option again and am using the "search the internet for help" option. Someone please help, how do I fix this? My iMac is late 2009

Well, I ended up booting into the Recovery partition and selected "Reinstall Mountain Lion".
After it downloaded for about an hour an a half it reinstalled the operating system and then had me restart the computer.
I restarted and instead of going through the setup process, I was asked to login.
The new password worked! and all my stuff was still there!
I guess it was good I didn't wipe the drive before doing the reinstall, not sure what went wrong to begin with but now things are going well again. Hurray!

  • OSX Lion won't let me log in

Ok sorry everyone, I've been searching all day for answers on all forums everywhere! I'm baffled and I really need your help.
Most threads seem to be written last year, surely there is a now a common standard in how to fix Lion hanging after restart.
    So here's my timeline:
On my MacMini 2010 320Gb - Just upgraded to Lion last night from Snow Leopard (a moment of madness worrying about iCloud, thinking to get a head start).
    Installation ticks along as normal.
All looks well and asks for a restart.
After restart, the screen hangs on dark grey screen and cursor becomes the pinwheel.
So, did Recovery boot, reinstalled Lion - nope, still hangs.
Repeat, then did Disk Utility, Mac is verified, all my files are there, can only do another Install, nope still hangs.
Right, reset PRAM (could help maybe?), then Safe Boot, Hooray!
Wait, can only get into my secondary log-in account, not my Primary, it just hangs on the pinwheel.
When in the secondary account I cannot see my MacHD drive (because it's in Safe mode?)
No little about Verbose mode, anything to sniff out files I need to be walked through step by step.
    Please help me someone!
    Cheers.

Wow, three applications? And I feel confident in saying that none of them were able to completely rid you of that Trojan.
With Flashback variants A-N (at last count) some of which install at least two types of Trojan, not even three A-V vendors will guarantee you that they were able to eliminate all of it.
That's why the advise given here from the time it was first discovered is to (courtesy of Linc Davis):
You need to take the following steps immediately:
    1. Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so.
    2. Boot from your installation disc, launch Disk Utility, and erase the internal drive.
    3. Reinstall the Mac OS.
    4. Reboot and go through the initial setup process. Import from your backuponly user data and settings, not applications or other files.
    5. Run Software Update.
    6. Change every Internet password you have. Check all financial accounts for unauthorized transactions.
    7. Reinstall your third-party software from fresh downloads or original media, not from backups which may be contaminated.
    8. Learn safe computing practices.
If you are unable to do that and know which variant of Flashback you were infected by, I may be able to help you avoid reinstalling it.
And some tips for avoiding future infection, since it would appear it's going to be with us for awhile (courtesy of magmatic.com):
Mitigation 1: Disable "Open Safe Files.." In Safari->Preferences->General.
Mitigation 2: ONLY DOWNLOAD FLASH FROM http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/
Mitigation 3: Disable Java or manage the Preferences. http://www.magmatic.com/apple-security-muse/2012/2/23/java-hardening-tips.html
Mitigation 4: Update your OSX to the latest version.
