Os x Mavericks - Activity Monitor won't display

after I upgraded my Mac Mini to Mavericks, I am unable to display the Activity Monitor.  I have run the disk utility to repair permissions, and I've verified the drive.   I've looked in the console for any error messages related to the launch of Activity Monitor and found none.  The top menu bar for the activity monitor appears, and I can select the pull-down menus.  My Macbook Air successfully upgraded to Mavericks, and the activity monitor works there.
Can anyone offer some help on this?  Thanks.

I've signed on with two different user id's and the activity monitor works perfectly.  It must be something in this particular user id.   Also, when I click on the Finder icon, the top bar greys out, but I can go to it and select "file - new finder window" and I get the finder window.  What should I look for?

  • How to make Mavericks Activity monitor refresh every second

I noticed that the Mavericks version of Activity Monitor now refreshes only every 5 seconds.  It used to be every second.  I am guessing they intend to make Activity Monitor more energy efficient this way, but is it possible to make it refresh every second like it used to ?
    Thank you !

  • Mavericks Activity Monitor Missing Functionality

I'm a developer who loves to keep track of application and system resources to be sure I'm making effective use of them both during the development process, but also to ensure that users of the software will have a good user experience and not be wasting RAM, CPU, etc, unnecessarily.  So the Activity Monitor is a fantastic tool to stay on top of everything at all times.  When I upgraded to Mavericks, I lost 3 key abilities that I use 24 hours/day and never shut off:
    1) Ability to view memory usage in the Dock icon. I realize you can view it in the Memory tab on the main window, but the Dock icon allows you to display memory there, so you can use the main windows for network utilization.
    2) Network utilization under Mountain Lion showed in very easy graphical representation the exact amount of KB/sec or MB/sec of network throughput as a line graph. Keeping that window open and tucking in a corner of one of your monitors allows for constant tracking of network bandwidth usage, so you always know how much bandwidth you're consuming at any given moment with a quick glance.
    3) CPU utilization horizontal floating window. I realize they still have the vertical bar floating window representation, but where has the horizontal representation gone?  I preferred that view as it takes up less screen realestate.  This feature is gone in Mavericks.
With these 3 different views open and viewable at all times, you can keep close track of RAM, CPU, and network bandwidth.  And all 3 of these views are gone in Mavericks!  Can we please have them back?  These are serious usability and efficiency tools that we've come to rely upon.

Yes,   I have a similar question,  but particularly wanting the VERTICAL  CPU usage  FLOATING bar back.  (still relevant to the Horizontal CPU usage bar of course).      Here is the link to my post/question:

    good luck.

  • Activity Monitor won't leave dock

I've tried right mouse also pulling above dock to remove-but won't go away.

    Hello:
Open Activity Monitor.  Go to the menu bar>view>dock icon.  Check show application icon.  That will obviously disappear when the application is closed.

  • Activity Monitor Won't Run

Anyone else having this problem? Activity monitor will simply not run. It starts, then crashes...every time.

Me, too! Since upgrading to SL & then immediately to 10.6.2 a couple days ago.
Well, it won't run - it didn't crash, it just hung on startup. I tried repairing permissions and, after finding this thread, removed the plist file suggested, but no luck. I just realized I should check the log (Console), and found it was putting out this, over and over again:
    12/13/09 11:28:47 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.ActivityMonitor[4828]) posix_spawn("/Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app/Contents/MacOS/activitymonitord", ...): No such file or directory
And exiting, then retrying every 10 seconds.
I opened the Activity Monitor package to confirm that activitymonitord is there, but upon rereading the message I realized it's telling me Activity Monitor needs to be in the utilities folder - and I had moved it into a subdirectory (to declutter my Utilities folder). It always worked there in previous systems, but apparently SL's Activity Monitor has a hard-coded address built in.
I moved AM back to where Apple wants it and it immediately opened. Don't know if this helps anyone else, but I thought I'd put this out there in case it does . . .
(Yes, I know you "should" leave programs where Apple puts them and keep your files in your user folder, but I just like to do things my way whenever I can get away with it.)

  • Activity Monitor won't run after leopard install

The only problem i'm having is that when i try and load Activity Monitor it bounces once and crashes. No amount of relaunches and reset/relaunches fixes the problem.
Any ideas? I've also tried launching the old tiger version of Activity Monitor that is on one of my SuperDuper backup external drives, but no luck.
    Thanks,
    Conrad

I apologize for the poor formatting. I did a filter for Activity and found these references to the crash. It looks like i'm missing a framework required for displaying the graphs that activity monitor uses. Any advice on how to go about replacing that?
    Thanks

  • SLOW Imac and Activity Monitor won't work

My imac has slowed down and Safari keeps crashing and everything is slow. I tried to look in Activity monitor but when I try to get in it tells my that 'Activity monitor doesn't have to correct file permissions' and to fix it with Disk Utility, so I tried that but nothing. • Activity Monitor won't open

Lately I cannot open the AM I get the message "AM can not start because of incorrect file permissions I have trashed the AM plist from the preferences in Library but no result. Message concludes "try opening it from utilities in the apps folder" which is exactly where it is.
Any help appreciated. I posted this last year and did not follow up, apologies.

Try reinstalling the Activity Monitor application. Get Pacifist
You can use Pacifist to extract the Activity Monitor application from your restore disk(s) and reinstall it.
Make sure and run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions after you install the app. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

  • Activity monitor won't launch

It pops up for a second in the Dock and then disappears. Is there anyway to reinstall it? or trouble-shoot it? I repaired permissions but it didn't help.

    Hi
Create another administrator account - call it whatever you like, test will do. System Preferences > Accounts > click the plus icon. Once you've created this log out of the current account and log into the new account. Now try to see if Activity Monitor will launch. If it does not try a reinstall of the OS but preserve network users and settings. If it does launch then log out of the new admin account, log back in to the old account and move the whole of the Preferences folder in /Users/Home/Library to the Desktop. Restart the mac. On successful log in you will notice that the dock has been reset back to its default - don't worry you have not lost anything. Go to the Preferences folder you previously moved to the desktop and find the com.apple.mail.plist and com.apple.dock.plist and move these two files to the newly created Preferences folder in /Users/Home/Library. If it tells you that com.apple.dock.plist already exists then overwrite it. Restart the mac again and you should now be OK.

  • Activity Monitor won't turn off

I am running Activity Monitor, and it is saying to "please wait while sample is taken". It has been doing this for hours now, and I cant turn it off.

  • LCD monitor won't display

My Rebel won't display the live view, when I click on the little camera button all I get is a clicking sound.

  • Imac 2006 monitor won't display properly

The left half of my monitor is fuzzy and black on my 2006 imac.   I have a cable to connect an external monitor.  How do I get the external monitor to work properly.   Right now when I plug in the external monitor, all I can see is when I move the mouse left to right (and off the imac monitor, it continues onto the external monitor.    I am a beginner with all this.

Open System Preferences, click on Display, click Detect Displays, select your external display, and check the box for Mirror the Internal Display.  That should make the external display what the internal display is supposed to show.
You might have to fiddle with Resolutions to get the external display to appear properly (if at all, because it is probably a bad logic board or graphic processor, which will make external display not work properly, and is a very expensive repair).
    Good luck.

  • VGA output signal is present but my VGA monitor won't display it --- why?

When I connect the iPad to a Samsung SyncMaster 570STFT display (with the Apple iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter) and try to play a movie, the audio plays and the image on the iPad is not updated (which I would expect, since it's supposed to be playing on the external VGA), but the monitor reports "Video mode not supported" (which is what it says when the display resolution is out of range).
I've verified that the monitor works fine at iPad resolution (by plugging it into a Mac Mini and confirming that it is operating at 1024x768).
Is there something unusual about the iPad's VGA output that is incompatible with some displays? Has anybody else run into this problem?

Scan rate and frame rate are different item. VGA is analogue and is based on CRT in which the electron gun scan the phosphors on the screen. Frame rate, as you seem to know, is how many screens there are per second.
If you look at the properties of your video what does it say. Does it play on your iPad?
The tech specs for the iPad say the following. Note that it says:
    "640 by 480 pixels" for MPEG-4
    TV and video
Support for 1024 by 768 pixels with Dock Connector to VGA Adapter; 576p and 480p with Apple Component AV Cable; 576i and 480i with Apple Composite AV Cable
H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
