OS X Mavericks cannot create a new partition on main hard drive

I am trying to partition the primary hard drive on my MBP (late 2011 model; 8,2) with OS X 10.9 installed.  Every time I try to partition it. I get a "Partition Falied" error (see picture below).  I tried repairing all permissions on that HD and still have the same problem.

Please Help!!!!!

    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

  • How to stop iTunes creating a new library on my hard drive when it can't find the one I have created and told it to use on an external drive?

I have quite alot of music etc so to save hard drive space I have created my iTunes library on an external hard drive. If I ever accidentaly open iTunes when that external hard drive isn't attached iTunes makes a whole new library from scratch on my computers hard drive. I find this highly frustrating as I often open Itunes to find no music as it have changed librarys and I have to re-load my actual library: very frustraiting and time consuming.
I would like to know if it is possible to lock iTunes some how to stop it from changing folders when it can'f find the library, or atleast give me a warning that it can't find the library before creating a whole new one????

Tunes works through a database file which has a list of your tracks.  When you click on a track it looks up in the database which file it needs to play, then plays the file.  If something breaks this link then you get !  The two main ways to get ! are to move a file from where iTunes expects it to be, or to delete it altogether.  I don't know which has happened in your case.  You can try using Spotlight to find a file for the one referred to in a broken link.  If the files have been moved then they need to be moved back.  If they were deleted completely you will have to restore them from a backup or download them again from the iTunes Store and rebuild your library.

  • Why can't I creat a new folder in my hard drive?

When I try to create a new folder and error pops up.  It reads: "The operation could not be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code - 50)."
Does anyone know why this would be happening?

If the name is too long or has characters other than letters, numbers, or the following
then that is likely the issue.

  • New partition on external hard drive won't mount

I have an 2TB external drive connected by FireWire to my 24-inch, Early 2009 iMac. I created 2 partitions 1 that is about 35 GB and another that is the rest of the 2TB. The 2nd largest partition mounts fine and is being used by Time Machine for my back up. The 2nd one I wanted to use for a Tech Tool Pro eDrive. However the 35 GB drive won't mount. Well it mounts, but after a few seconds it unmounts itself. This is the message I get as it unmounts itself:
8/18/13 7:18:45.788 PM fseventsd[43]: Events arrived for /Volumes/eDrive after an unmount request! Re-initializing.
8/18/13 7:18:45.789 PM fseventsd[43]: creating a dls for /Volumes/eDrive but it already has one...

    Any ideas?
I've checked the partition with Disk Utility and no errors.
    Regards,
    Chris Johnson

If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Boot into Recovery and launch Disk Utility. Does the volume mount?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • How to put a recovery partition on the hard drive

How can I create a recovery partition on the hard drive of my laptop. I had to reinstall the whole system, and tried to use the HP recovery software they sent me but it quit when it was about three quarters the way finished. I had to use a copy of windows 8 to put the system back on my laptop. After I got it all straighten out, I updated it to windows 8.1 and it seems like the computer runs a lot faster with windows 8.1 on it. Now I need to find away to install a recovery partition on my hard drive.
    Thank You

A Recover partition is something the factory places on the computer. It is an image of the factory installation and the software required to restore the computer to a factory like state using that image. You will not be able to create a Recovery partition on your computer unless you use the HP Recovery Discs to return the computer to a factory like state. Please note the HP Recovery Discs and the resulting HP Recovery partition will only contain an image of Windows 8 that cannot be updated to reflect the installation of Window 8.1.
My suggestion is to use the Windows "System Image Backup" utility to create an exact image of the Windows 8.1 partition as it currently is. If your computer developes an issue or you need to replace the hard drive, all you have to do is "restore" the image to the computer. You will need to use an external USB hard drive or other media to store the image. Please see Windows 8.1 Tip: Use System Image Backup for instructions on creating and storing a "Windows - System Image Backup."

  • How do I migrate firefox settings from a 4.0 FF install on my old main drive, now connected as an external drive, to my new main hard drive's 4.0 FF installation?

My old computer's motherboard cooked, but the hard drive was undamaged. I removed it, and converted it to an external hard drive using cables, and now want to migrate the bookmarks, passwords, and settings to my new computer's main hard drive installation of Firefox.

See [[Managing Profiles]] which explains how to recover data from your profile on the old drive.

I created a new partition; how do I open it? I want to install Mavericks on it?

When the Mavericks installer opens, you'll be given the chance to choose where you want it installed to. Select that partition.
If the partition's formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), no additional preparation is required.

  • After installing Mavericks my email isn't allowing me to draft a new message. I can see my messages, but cannot create a new message or reply to any messages. When I try nothing happens, then Mail freezes all together.

I can see my messages, but cannot create a new message or reply to any messages.
When I try nothing happens, then Mail freezes all together and usually crashes.
I was able to get into my Mail settings and everything looks ok as far as I can tell.
Has anyone else seen this? My software is completely up to date now (unfortunately).
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

    Do a backup.
    Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • My boss cannot create a new subfolder by pressing "new folder" until he's already saved the file to his desktop. A "read only" error appears the first time. Is there a way to create and save to subfolder directly? It's Mavericks/Macbook Pro

Hi, when my boss wants to save a new file in a new subfolder, he presses "new folder" but cannot create a new one because a “read only” error box appears. Once he saves the file to his Desktop he clicks on “save as” again and then he can create a new subfolder by pressing “new folder.” Is there a way to create and save to a subfolder directly without having to first save somewhere else?

Your server file handling has nothing, and really nothing to do with Adobe software. If files don't get locked for (over-)writing and/or lose connection to the program opening them, then your server is misconfigured. It's as plain and simple and that. Anything from "known file types"/ file associations not being set correctly, MIME types being botched, crooked user privileges and file permissions, missing Mac server extensions, delayed file writing on the server, generic network timeout issues and what have you. Either way, you have written a longwinded post with no real value since you haven't bothered to provide any proper technical info, most notably about the alleged server. Either way, the only way you can "fix" it is by straightening out your server and network configuration, not some magic switch in Adobe's software.

  • How can I create a new partition to install Windows 7 by not using Bootcamp

How can I create a new partition to install Windows 7 by not using Bootcamp?

If you want to dualboot you have to use boot camp i think. I think you have already a full disc and cannot make another partition I'm I right?
Your question seems a bit blurry so I'm giving you a general tip here.
If you want to just try the beta you can always use Sun's "Virtualbox".

  • Can't create a new partition

    Hi,
I want to create a new partition as I have done before a few times.
Now, the problem is, that I get an error message, when I'm trying to create one.
Unfortunetally the error message is in German, so I try to translate it:
    "Partitioning failed
During partitioning is occurred an error:
MediaKit reports: System has for the desired process not enough memory"
You can see the screenshot under following link:
    http://www.apfeltalk.de/forum/partitionen-zusammenf-hren-t174556.html
The point is: I have 2 GB RAM and more than 100 GB on my harddisc free!
Probably this problem occured with Mac OS X 10.5.5.
    Does anybody know an solution?
How can I contact Apple to inform them about this problem and get some help?!
    Best regards
    Stefano

Your translation is probably a little off and rather than meaning there's not enough RAM it means there's not enough contiguous hard drive space to make a partition of that size. I'm assuming that you are trying to partition a drive that already has data on it. If I am right, before the drive can be partitioned, it has to be defragmented so that the drive has no data in a group of tracks equal to the size you requested. It is possible to request a partition size that looks like it should fit but there's one or more files that cannot be moved out to make space for it. That, is what I think has happened to you.
If I am right you can try defragging your hard drive with a program dedicated to defragmenting and optimizing. Some people have had success doing this and others have used such a program and still couldn't partition their drive. You can clone the drive to another hard drive (SuperDuper! and CarbonCopyCloner are two good cloning programs) and then turn around and clone right back to original. This will work because as the files are copied to the target drive they will all be placed in contiguous sectors so the drive will be completely defragmented. Or you can try making a smaller partition.

  • I have snow leopard with bootcamp what will happen if I create a new partition and install Lion

query as subject line - I was planning to create a new partition using disk utility and installing lion on that - I am aware Lion will Create a recovery partition in addition - so is it possible to have Snow with it's Bootcamp and Lion with it's recovery on my imac purchased jan 2012?
Subsequent question although I purchased Lion from the mac store can I jump straight to Mountain Lion (if I purchase it) from Snow leopard?

If you plan to create a third partition, then you will lose control over your Boot Camp partition and ability to boot Windows. You cannot have three partitions as you desire.
You can upgrade the Snow Leopard system to Lion or Mountain Lion. You can obtain another HDD and install Lion or Mountain Lion on the external drive.
Yes, you can purchase and download Mountain Lion to upgrade the Snow Leopard system.

    zoominnana wrote:

No, you can't partition a Time Capsule's internal HD.  Both partitions will back up to the same sparse bundle. keeping the backups for each partition separate.
Time Machine will not take the two OSX partitions as two different computers, but for best results, exclude the Snow Leopard drive from backups on the Lion partition, and exclude the Lion partition from backups on the Snow Leopard partition.
There may be some files on the Lion partition that Time Machine on Snow Leopard won't like, among other things.  See #10 in  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details.
