OS X Mavericks: display randomly turning white/brown/grey [no resolution issues]

Hey folks,
I discovered a very strange problem the last few days while using the internal and an external VGA Monitor on my Macbook Pro (mid 2010, 8GB).
I'm running on OS X Mavericks with the latest updates and the system runs pretty smooth.
What I discovered is as follows:
Using any VGA monitor that I own, sometimes both (internal and external) display turn white (or grey or brown, just displaying a solid colored screen). This occurs with literally every display I used externally and doesn't occur while just using the Macbook Pro without an external display. This didn't happen before on Mountain Lion, neither did it happen the first weeks on Mavericks (I've been using it since it's released). After this happening, I have to do a forced reboot. This issue does occur randomly within the daily usage.
Furthermore, I don't have any resolution issues as many user claimed about this already while running OS X Mavericks.
From looking at the system I can tell that the RAM is not damaged (also because this doesn't happen while using the MB without external display). I also tried other RAM, issue remains reproducible.
I haven't found any solution on the internet, so I decided to post my problem here.
Hope there is anybody out there who might be able to help me out.
Yours sincerely

  • My screen just randomly turned white

My screen just randomly turned white. But I can still hear the video. After turning it off by pressing the power button, when turned back on the screen flickers. What should I do?

First off, it would help to know what you're talking about. What turned white? The iPod? The iPad?? A Mac??? Which kind of Mac???? What were you doing, and what have you done since? You really don't give us much to work with.

  • Screen randomly turned white!

I was playing Pac the Man X on my Powerbook earlier today as I frequently do when something rather bizarre happened. Pac Man suddenly froze, and my screen began to turn white. It stayed normal for a second after Pac Man froze, but the went to the white. I wasn't straight to white, but like a jumpy version of a fade to white PowerPoint transition (best analogy I could think of). I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary before this happened, and I have never had any trouble with Pac Man. I wasn't sure what was going on, which made me somewhat nervous, so I immediately did a force restart (command, control, power key). After the restart, my computer started up fine. I went straight into disk utility and backed up my hard drive onto my external 500gb WD drive (the new My Book Premium) just in case there was an actual problem. It would be rather devastating for me to loose my 7,000 song library among other things. Since the reboot, everything has been running without a hitch. The whole thing happened almost 6 hours ago.
Now that I have explained the problem, I will give as much background information as possible so everyone will know exactly what is going on. Last night (6/29), I downloaded the 10.4.7 update, the iTunes 6.0.5 update, the QuickTime 7.1.2 update, and the iPod updater 2006-06-28 all through software update. After the updates were finished downloading and installing, I chose the option for shutdown instead of restart and went to bed. This morning (Friday morning actually, 6/30) I started up my computer, logged in, launched mail and AIM, and pulled up my Dashboard. Before heading off to work, I closed the screen to put my PowerBook to sleep as I always do. I noticed that the sleep light did not come on at all, so I opened the computer back up only to be greeted be a black screen. The computer was still on and running, but the screen was not coming up. I moved the mouse around with no response. I then did a force restart, hit the shutdown button on the login window, and then left for work. When I returned home, I started up my PowerBook, launched Mail and AIM, poked around the iTunes store a bit (got the 2 free singles), and fired up Pac the Man X. After I had been playing for a few minutes, the white screen thing happened.
Now for the tech specs of my situation: I have a 15", 1.25ghz PowerBook G4. It has 1gb of RAM installed. I have a Logitech MX900 Bluetooth mouse connected wirelessly (obviously), as well as a 500gb Western Digital My Book Premium drive connected through the USB2 port on the left side. I also have a Sony 19" external display connected to the DVI port running in a dual screen setup. I am running OS 10.4.7 and had Mail, AIM, iTunes (not playing music), and Pac the Man X open and running at the time of the 'event'. I connect to the Internet wirelessly through my Airport Extreme Base Station. I do not know if the Sony display was affected because it was turned off at the time.
All right, I believe that that is all the information that anyone could ever need on my situation (and the most times I have used 'that' in a sentence). Sorry if it is a little overwhelming, I just want to make sure I cover all the bases. Is this a precursor to a major problem, or am I just being paranoid? What caused it? Has anyone else experienced this? Should I go ahead and have Apple look at it before my warranty runs out? I have really haven't had any major problems with my PowerBook and would miss it terribly should something happen. If anyone can help me here, I would really, really appreciate it. Also, if I somehow managed to leave out any necessary information, please let me know. I looked briefly but did see any similar posts; so sorry if this has already been posted. Thank you in advance for any help.

  • IPhone 4, Display is broken, white, black, grey lines

Sorry if this is in the wrong place!
My problem is very hard to understand, basically, I cannot use my iPhone. The screen is 'wobbling', it is 'flashing', has turned white, grey and black! Help!
A few weeks ago I did crack the screen, I haven't fixed it yet because its not all over the screen, only at the bottom. I've had no issues until yesterday morning. First, the internet page I was on started to wobble, then the display itself completely changed. The actual iPhone is ok, I have been able to access it on iTunes, for example to sync it and restore, although I can't use the iphone. I have no idea what to do. I have tried resetting and restoring.
What can I do? I guess I am going to have to go to a shop tomorrow to sort it out, can it be saved?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Look for a 3rd party repair shop that can fix it in your area. It wouldn't be covered by warranty anyway.

  • Rgb to cmyk turns white brown

    Hi Guys
In previous versions - changing from RGB to CMYK or vice versa would change the colours slightly but ever since CC when I change one to the other my white
goes brown and there is a yellow tone to the image.
Has anyone else experienced this - it's not slight either see image. I haven't adjusted anything - the original CMYK is on the left and
when I make it RGB - it goes brown.
Has anyone else had this issue?

I'd try a new display profile first. Recalibrate, or if you don't have a calibrator use sRGB (or Adobe RGB if your display is wide gamut).
Everything in Photoshop passes through the display profile. If there's a problem with the profile it can happen that one conversion goes bad but not another.
On Windows a common cause for this is bogus manufacturer profiles pushed through Windows Update. Mac isn't as susceptible to this, but there you have an added complication called ColorSync (which is where the actual profile conversions are done). So if a new profile doesn't fix it, you probably need someone with Mac OS X expertise.

  • Display randomly turns off; will applecare cover?

    Hi all, quick question.
I've had my iBook G4 for two years now. I love it. However, it does this weird thing every once in a while where the backlight just shuts off. It usually does it if I pick up the computer in order to move it somewhere, if I bump the display (not hard, mind you), or if I set it down. It'll do it pretty much any time I jolt the computer. It also does it randomly sometimes. The only way to fix it is to shut the screen, wait for it to go into sleep mode, and then open it up again. This gets pretty annoying when you're trying to work on something.
So, I was thinking about sending it into Apple with my Applecare, however, I wasn't sure if they would cover it because its an intermittent issue.
My speakers also do this crazy thing where I'll be watching something and they'll send all the sound to one of them or another. It sounds like one of them is going dead. However, this is also an intermittent thing.
So basically, my question is this; should I waste my time and money sending my pc into apple when my computer might not even "perform" the problems for them? Or, should I just deal with it?
    Thanks for your input!

    Hi,
The symptoms point to a logic board problem but you'll need to tell them how to duplicate the problem. I had the same problem with mine and sent it in for repair. They couldn't duplicate it and sent it back. I found I could cause it to freeze by pressing on the top case next to or just below the fn key. I then took it to the Genius bar and was able to duplicate it with the Genius watching. Apple replaced the logic board and it's been fine since.
For your sound problem balanced-1.0 (freeware) can correct it or if you're using an early version of Tiger, updating will probably correct it too.

  • Display randomly turns off

I will be using my Macbook Pro, and the screen will randomly shut off, and the light that tells you it on in front edge turns off. When i close the lid it comes back on. All my keyboard lights are still on when i open the lid. I did just have apple replace my Logic Board. The computer turned off and wouldnt turn back on, that was fixed with the logic board replacement though.

Thanks for the quick response. Any idea how that could be fixed? And would monitor problems create any issues with the operation of the rest of the computer? I did forget to mention (sorry) that when these issues arise, the sound will often loop, much like a 'broken record.' I didn't know if that would help. Thanks so much!

  • Final Cut Pro - Two Video Cards - Display Turns White

    MacPro Xeon 2.0GHz
    3 Gig Ram
    Two nVidia 7300 Video Cards
Two CRT Monitors and One HDTV
I have two CRT monitors attached to my original nVidia card. I recently installed a second video card and attached a third monitor to my DVI output (on the second video card)
I tell Final Cut Pro to display video on third monitor as full screen output. I can see my 720p (or 480p) display. When I press play, the entire screen turns White. (I've tried a CRT monitor, and my LCD HDTV via HDMI to DVI).
If I remove my Right CRT monitor from my graphics card and attach my HDTV (giving me one monitor and one HDTV) I can get full screen 720p play back. But I don't want to edit with one monitor! I am wanting to have my two monitor editing setup with the third monitor as my full screen display (720p).
Why does three monitors result in a white frame for playback? Do I need to configure something?
    Help!

  • Help....Ipod display turned white.

While my son was using his brand new 30g ipod, the display turned "all fuzzy, the colors seem to invert and then it turned white."
It may have been exposed to sunshine for a little while.
Is there something I can do to fix it?

You can try this, but quite frankly I'd be returning this iPod for an exchange.
iPod 5th gen (with video) shows blank or white screen.

  • Display turns white

I have 2 apple 24 displays on my 09 Mac Pro.
About 5 times now the left display will suddenly turn white and the machine locks up forcing me to do a hard reboot.

    Hi Mehix,
If you are having issues with a white display on your iPhone 3GS, you may want to try the Display troubleshooting listed in the following article:

  • Display has white and grey lines and blocks crisscrossing it and touch functions are not working properly on half the screen.

I dropped my iPhone 5S and it landed flat on it's face (it was in a protective case).  Since then my touch screen display is not working properly. I have white and grey lines and/or blocks crisscrossing the screen both horizontally and vertically.  Screen responds to touch in odd random ways, but rarely does what I am trying to do.  Can't call or receive calls because can't dial or answer phone via swipe. Can't text or read incoming texts. All functions seem to be working except that I can't access them because the touch screen is acting up. If I move the phone around it randomly accesses different apps or functions, but I have no control over them once the appear on the screen.  Touching screen just causes phone to randomly choose something else to open.  What have I damaged?

We cannot possibly tell. Obviously some hardware inside. Take it in to an Apple Store. They will offer you the opportunity to swap the phone for $269 in the US. Prices vary by country.

    Hello there, LaruaGalliers.
The following Knowledge Base article provides some great troubleshooting steps for your issue:
iPhone and iPod touch: Charging the battery
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1476
    Particularly:
    Battery does not charge
Verify that the outlet being used is working.
Try another USB power adapter if available.
If no other USB power adapter is available, try connecting to a high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode.
Try another USB cable if available.
iPhone or iPod touch displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive
If you see the image below, charge the iPhone or iPod touch with USB power adapter for at least 15 minutes.
You should see this image when iPhone or iPod touch begins to charge:
If the screen still displays the low-battery icon, try turning the iPhone or iPod touch off and then on again.
If the issue persists, follow these troubleshooting steps.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • Iphone Battery Problems - Randomly Turning Off

I've had my iPhone 3GS 32GB since around October last year and all has been well until about a week ago. I was on firmware 3.1.2 and my phone started to randomly turn itself off, even when the battery was displaying a high percentage. Before this I had also noticed that my battery seemed to be draining a lot faster than it used to.
In an attempt to fix it I restored my phone to a backup and so it put me onto the new 3.1.3 firmware. I thought this may have fixed it but its made it even worse! Its now turning itself off several times a day and the battery percentage jumps about from extreme to extreme (from say 70% to 5% to 59% etc). I took it in to an Apple store where they ran a diagnostic and it showed that there was no hardware fault.
Has anyone else had problems like this? And more importantly can anyone suggest a way to fix it?
    All help will be appreciated

Jymoz - did you resolve this? Last week O2 replaced my 3G 16gb iphone with a 3G S version. I used itunes to restore the new phone with my old phone files & settings. But 4 times in the last 7 days the phone has randomly turned itself off. Either I'm using email, or a game or its just on the home screen and all of a sudden the screen goes black, I get the small circle used to show a page is loading, and then it turns completely off. I wondered if you solved your problem, or if anyone has any ideas about my issue? Thanks for any help.

i want to know why when i turn on my iPhone the screen turns white

    Hello Manjanela,
Article: TS2802 may help you with the white screen.
    Display shows a white screen
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
If the iPhone will not turn off, try to reset it.
If that doesn't work, try restoring the device.

  • Transparant area turns white in 8bit png format

    Hello Experts,
When transperant is set in photoshop then exported to png 24bit then when opened in MS paint(which supporst only 8bit) the transperacy turns white.
When transperant is set in illustrator then exported to png 24bit then when opened in paint, the transperancy is shown in black;.This behaviour is what i need with the pngs that are created in photoshop. I really dontknow why this transperancy behaves differently with PS and  Ilustrator.
Could anyone tell why transperancy set in  PS turns white in 8bit format(in MSPaint). This is because, My touch screen device will show pngs in 24bit and 16bit. And in some cases my device has to display pngs in 8 bit also. When pngs are shown in 8bit, i am able to see white patches where transperancy is given. These pngs are mainly created in PS. But we do not find any issue with pngs created in Illustrator.
Could anyone tell whats going wrong wih PS.
If i get answer for this, i would be able to find the root cause of the issues that we face in our project.
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Ashok

I can only guess at what the difference may be between PS and AI.  The PNG file format has some ancillary chunks, one of which is the default background color. Ancillary chunks can be ignored by the opening program if it chooses. It is possible that AI declares the background to be black and PS does not. As far as I can tell, the PNG default background color chunk is independent of what the background color is set to in Photoshop when you save an  image with transparency from PS.
One work around is to place the PS image in Illustrator and save from there. You may have good reasons to use Paint, but I've found other problems in having Paint digest  png  files and never use Paint. Png files with transparency written by PS seem to work fine in other programs.
