OS X Mavericks download causes S.M.A.R.T error?

I tried to download and install OS X Mavericks and get a SMART error. I have Version OS 10.68 and Boot Camp with partition to drive Windows XP. Install progam is showning 2 Drives the Mac Drive and the Windows XP Drive. I selected Mac Drive and that's when it shows the S.M.A.R.T. drive error. Can anyone help me on this one? ~Scott

You really should have more than 1 backup as hard drives do fail as you have just seen. Buy another external and use Time machine or a clone to create a 2nd backup.
Clone  - Carbon Copy Cloner          (Often recommended as it has more features than some others)
Clone – Data Backup
Clone – Deja Vu
Clone  - SuperDuper
Clone - Synk
Clone Software – 6 Applications Tested

How are you connecting to your internet router, By Wifi or Ethernet cable?
If WiFi get an Ethernet cable and try that. Any drop out in the WiFi signal will cause the download to stop. Could be if you are using WiFi your WiFi router can't handle the large file transfer.

  • Mavericks download and Install on 10.6.8

    Hello All,
I am facing weird behavior for Mavericks download on my 2007 iMac. I have checked and it is matching the requirements given by the Mothership.
However, I have now downloaded it twice and the process fails to create the appropriate file in Applications directory.  I am left with the .pkg file and Retry dowload message.
The appstore purchases window has entry for OS X but without the Download button. This entry is removed once i click on Retry OR Cancel. The temp directory also vanishes.
I checked the MD5 hash on both the .pkg files that were downloaded and they are the same -- so in my view the download was good (all of 5.29 gb).
If I try to run the .pkg file, i get error while selecting the partition - it recognizes only the bootable partition for install.
Changing the .pkg ext to .app gives error for Classic application support.
So, I need answers / comments for
    a. Why is the download in .pkg format for me ?
    b. Why does it not recognize the empty partition for install (the method was suggested for Lion or ML earlier).
    c. How do i test drive Mavericks before I take the decision to upgrade.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well, Just to update.  While I did not find answers to above questions, I did manage to install Mavericks using the downloaded package. It took  bit of command line skills to do it.
Essentially, I had to extract the dmg files from pkg file using 'pkgutil' command. Once I had the dmg, I created a USB bootable for mavericks and using that installed it on a separate partition for test drive. As of now, it seems to be working well. I have been able to run OpenOffice (3.x and 4). However, my HP printer des not work and HP has not posted a driver yet for my series.
All in all, I think I will wait for the major update on 10.9 before upgrading 10.6.8.

You will need to contact Apple, try iTunes Support. Mavericks was pulled from the MAS when Yosemite was released and the only possible way to get it is by contacting Apple directly.
    good luck

  • How do you know if the Maverick download is happening?

I am now trying to download Maverick .. & have been hearing a whirring sound. But it starts then stops?
    - BUT I can't tell if it's done. I've kept the "page" on the screen, and the "download" button shows grey & it shows "Downloading"
    - BUT I don't see any circles, to show anything is happening.
    - NOR can I see anything on download in Finder. I've been checking the apple icon to see & it still shows Lion, 10.7.5 that I got in 2012. I have 4GB.
So, How do you know if the Maverick download is happening - & when it's done?
Last, do you have to restart the computer? I haven't been able to find a "how to" about this download.
    Thanks

With App Store open, purchases or updates pane (can't recall which), CMD+R to reload the page, and you should see a progress bar. Should look like this:

  • Mavericks download doesn't work

I'm on OS 10.6.8 now, trying to update to Mavericks.
However, the download doesn't seem to work: for some reason it paused, and I can't get it to start again. Right clicking the Dock icon and hitting "Resume" or "Cancel download" doesn't do anything. The only thing I can do is drag the icon off the Dock, after which it disappears. However, when I try to retry downloading it, clicking "Install App" in the App Store doesn't do anything.
I've tried logging out and in, and even restarting, but that doesn't fix it. However, when I do log in, the Mavericks download icon appears in the Dock, saying "Paused".
I also noticed in the Activity Monitor that "kernel_task" uses most of my CPU all the time, even when I have no programs open. This never happened before I tried installing Mavericks. Could it be related?
    Please help!

Here's a screenshot of the Mavericks download, stuck on Pause.

  • Paused Mavericks download a problem?

Will a paused Mavericks download affect a subsequent disk copy I wish to quickly make with Super Duper!?
Just read the problems encountered. Apology for this naiive question!

The copy will also have a paused download.
It shouldn't be a problem to resume the download, or delete it and start anew.
Mac App Store: How to resume interrupted downloads
    Open the Mac App Store.
From the Store menu, choose Sign In.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
Click Purchases to get to your Purchases Page.
Click the Resume button next to the app name.

OS X Mavericks download has paused and will not restart. How can I get it to restart?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
First, see if the download is paused and if you can resume it. To do so, open the Mac App Store, go to Purchases and press "Resume" next to OS X Mavericks.
If the download does not carry on, I would recommend you to restart and start the download all over again.

  • Mysterious downloading causing satellite internet to go over limit

Sorry for the long post. I have tried a lot of ways to answer my question, or fix my problem.
II have a 3 year old Intel Mac, still working great. Where we live our only high speed option is satellite, so we subscribe to hughesnet. Our downloads are limited to 375 meg per day.
We don't have a real problem staying under, but when it locks ups to 14.4 kbs, we know we have gone over. I eventually installed a few programs to let me know if it was my kids downloading stuff and not telling me, or something else. I installed two download monitoring programs, and Spector for Mac.
In the last month, there have been two incidents where massive downloading caused us to go over the daily limit. Hughesnet has at times locked us out claiming we went over - the download monitors were installed to verify this, and proved otherwise.
However, these last two times, the download monitors verified a download of over 300 meg within the space of an hour, part of the time while I was on the computer.
I have tried every way in the world to discover what the culprit was, what the files were, but I cannot.
I have checked the download records and histories of all three browsers, and these show nothing. Spector verified almost no browser use during the time in question.
I checked Itunes to see if anything, whether music, movies or podcasts had been added during that time frame. Nothing.
I checked the date of files in the download folder, both "created" and "modified". Nothing there.
I check the software updater(This had been a problem in the past). The log of downloaded updates shows no activity there as well.
My e-mail program didn't show any automatic downloads with massive file attachments, either.
It left me scratching my head.
After this happened a few weeks ago, I downloaded a 30-day trial of Intego Internet Security Barrier X6. Virus program, firewall, and a couple of other programs, I updated it and did a virus/trojan scan on my computer, with no results. I was completely clean. The antivirus program really slowed down the Mac, of course, and it got so bad that after a few days i couldn't take any more, so I uninstalled it.
The only options I haven't tried yet are scanning the backup drive( assumed this was scanned at the same time when I scanned the main nard drive, but am not sure) and possible a couple of other partitions. I have Windows XP installed on this computer through bootcamp, but haven't booted up in over 2 months. I also have a second version of windows installed within the mac osx partition through a Virtualbox program. I don't know if a virus could be hiding in there, but I am relatively certain that I installed antivirus protection on it and updated it as well. Even at that, I don't know if a trojan or virus could be play havoc while the program is turned off.
That is what I have done so far, and am out of ideas. Does anyone know of a way I can track down what this was?
If not, does anyone know of a program that could monitor this in the future and alert me to massive unauthorized downloads?
All comments and ideas are appreciated.
    Fred

There may be a way to monitor who (else) may have access, presumably
unauthorized and more possible if you have a local wireless aspect to your
home or business network where someone else not so far away could get in.
As both up and down load activities can be monitored, are you able to tell if
some of your usage is due to something in the computers "calling out" online
and them perhaps something else connecting back to your computers? The
app Little Snitch will tell what may be attempting some connections out.
Sometimes, you can tell if another computer is on a local network, unless that
owner or user has somehow set their computer to be invisible to a network it
may be borrowing internet access from.
Do you have any apps that offer an option to provide backups online to some
outside server? Some kinds of products can offer web-dependent services.
Even widgets in DashBoard can consume bandwidth. I have and use a widget
that turns off all widgets until I launch DashBoard. Dash-quit is a handy tool.
    {Having dual operating systems in the computers, possibly could be an issue;
but whether or not your configurations are accessing the internet somehow,
is an unknown to me. If the Windows systems can't go online while you aren't
    using them, maybe those aren't a probable cause of this; until they actually are.}
Is the network usage statistic based on mbps, kbps or some other set of numbers
where your version may appear different than that of the provider? Some of the
math (like MB vs. GB in drive capacities; comparing grapes and bananas) can be
harder to follow if one entity derives their quota from a different connection math.
Almost as bad in a few cases, as the cited hard disk drive capacities, when there
may be two different kinds of numbers!
I've only used dialup, ADSL, and some low-end cable internet. Had dish TV but
at the time, they offered nothing for internet; except weather outages of all signal.
    If you have nothing checking for automatic updates, including apps that may offer it;
and have the firewall set to not allow some invasive efforts of outside connections
to try and hook up to your network, and no body accessing your satellite internet via
a wireless component whose security is not what it should be; I am not so sure what
kind of other thing you'd need to be looking into at this point. Apparently something.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • HT201364 Mavericks download from App store updates fails to complete

    Hi,
Mavericks download from App store fails to complete.  Error message explains system needs firmare update version 1.1.  A check on my updated software list says this update done.  Re-running it confirms firmware update installation succesful.  But Mavericks still says unable to complete download.  All guidance would be much appreciated.  thank you,

    Hi Liz ..
You're sure your Mac can upgrade to Mavericks?  > OS X Mavericks: System Requirements
Which OS X is currently installed?
Click the Apple () menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac.
    The version is noted there.

Supposedly OSX Mavericks downloaded. I saw it downloading in launchpad. I left and came back and I guess it was all finished. How do I make sure it downloaded. I can't see any difference. Also, I have a notice that I should upgrade Mac EFI Firmware 2.1. And I got a notice that my ILibrary has changed locations. I don't have an ILibrary.

Look in your Applications folder for Install Mac OS X Mavericks file.
Better be sure you straighten out those peculiarities on your system before you upgrade to Mavericks or you will likely find yourself with a botched system. Be sure to perform the EFI update before upgrading, too. Put all normal OS X applications and files where they belong. Otherwise, erase the drive first. (after the EFI update.)
