OS X Mavericks Finder Bugs?

Upon updating my iMac to OS X Mavericks I noticed that Cover Flow contained a few annoyances and I have yet to find any discussions about this particular one. I've always used Cover Flow since I migrated to Mac but this seems specific to Mavericks. Everytime I open my Home folder the icons in the actual black scrollable area of Cover Flow would always resize to 180px x 140px.
I can resize them after I open the folder and that would make them the specified size until I close the window, but it would revert back upon opening it again. I even set my preferred sizea as the default in the Show View Options dialog box but that amounts to nothing.
I was wondering if anyone else has this issue, and if so, have you found a fix? I've sent a bug report to Apple already so I'm eager to see what they include in the next software update as well as your personal reports on this too.
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
From memory, it went like this:
In Finder, I have an icon in the toolbar marked 'Arrange'. If you don't have it, go to Finder  and under the View menu select 'Customise Toolbar'.The customise panel appears and you can drag and drop the Arrange icon onto your toolbar.
Click on the down arrow on the Arrange icon and you will see a drop down menu. Click on an option e.g. name (i.e. arrange folder contents by name). This should make your invisible files appear. I had to do this for most of the folders in Favorites on the Finder toolbar. One or two were ok anyway for some reason.
i hope this makes sense and answers your question. Sorry if I have used incorrect technical terms!

  • Smb v2 Finder bug / Mavericks

On all Mac running Mavericks 10.9 & 10.9.1 we have identified and reported a major bug when using SMB v2 file servers.
    Sumary
The Finder can't rename a remote folder on an SMB v2 file server.
Meanwhile, with the same file server mounted from the same version of Mavericks,
accessing the mounted filesystem through the command line interface (i.e. with Terminal, xterm or ssh).
it is possible to rename a folder.
It is also possible to rename any plain file i.e. the bug is limited to the Finder
    and to directories.
If switched to smbv1, then this Finder bug isn't happening.
    Debugging
I'm investing this bug and discovered that on MacOS X there exists
a kernel extension debugging flag that I can turn on.
This flag is kloglevel and used within /etc/nsmb.conf .
I haven't been able to find a documentation about the use of this kernel
extension debugging flag (is this a bitmask or a boolean or a level).
Where is this information? Is there any documentation to make any other
    debugging at the Finder level?

I'm having similar issues connecting from 10.7.3 to Win Server 2003.  I am getting messages that I don't have access to copy and rename things even though I am connected as the system administrator.  At one point, I got two similar share points showing up even though I had only one connection.
Disconnecting and reconnecting seems to help for a while.

  • Problem with my Macbook Finder Bug/ Problème avec mon MacBook Finder Bug

Hi, two days ago I took my Macbook Pro with me for my holidays, since then, the finder can't stop glitching (I'm on Mavericks) : every time I try to open a file, a document, even my preferences the finder bug and show me the colorful circle. Even when I'm on safari it continues to freeze during 20-30 seconds. Yesterday I did the new adobe flash player update and miracle, it worked for the evening. But when I started it this morning the glitches were back, I tried to do the update again but this time it didn't work. I don't know what to do, 3 days ago it was perfect and now it is full of glitches. I'm currently writing since 10 minutes because it freezes every 10 seconds. PS: I didn't download anything so it's not due to a bad download or a full memory.
Thanks for your answers if you saw this kind of case before.

  • Mavericks' finder "tag" vs. Lion's "label"

Hey all. Can I make Mavericks finder tags look like Lion's finder labels?
In Lion's finder, when you apply a "label" to a file (or whatever), in list view, it makes the entire row the color that you've chosen, which is really great for highlighting a particular file when you have a slew of them and you're only working with one or two.
In Mavericks' finder, you apply a "tag" in the same way (select file with contextual menu), but it puts a little colored dot at the right margin of the file name column. Not nearly as easy to see.
    Lion:
    vs. Mavericks
No contest in my book. Any advice will be appreciated, thanks.

There's a free 3rd party option called XtraFinder that adds the full color label back to files and folders.

  • BIG n EVIL Finder Bug!

After "converting" our last co-worker to Mac, she found (in astounding 45 Minutes OSX) an extremely evil Finder bug.
Don't try it, it's no fun to correct if afterwards:
In a normal OSX Finder Window, you can change the name of the home folder link in the left part of the window with a right-click-order "change name of usershortname" (or something like that, I use a german system).
IF you do this, your home folder will NOT be renamed but a new pseudo-user folder will be made. Your files remain in the old folder, but your system thinks the new is the right one, which will produce some nice errors. All new files (prefs etc.) will be put in the new folder.
It just took me an hour to restore her personal files (freshly imported from her old pc - in the middle of which she changed the name of the link because OSX changed her Umlaut-Name falsely to a Non-umlaut-Name ...) (another bug, by the way, but a small one)
    - by the way: Any idea how to change the user - shortname?

  • Finder bug in icon view. can anyone help me?

So, I'm experiencing a weird bug since I've installed OS X Mountain Lion.
When I set 'show items as icons' in Finder, the font used to label the files and folders are most of the time kinda messed up.
(they're not the normal black clean fonts, but they are like a really pale ugly and hard to read gray color)
And it's not like I'm using different fonts of whatever, it's a font smoothing/rendering issue.
If I turn off the 'Use LCD font smoothing when available', fonts are OK again.
The problem is that when I enter another folder, they are messed up again. Then I enable again the font smoothing option and they are ok (for that folder).
When I go back to the parent folder, they are gray again.
Also, when I make them "OK" with the LCD font option switch, they also become "NOT OK" as soon as I select them. (not individually, but making a box...yeah, weird uh?)
Really weird. I've tried to restart/ force quit the finder (which again, fix the issue just within the home folder) / adjust permission (maybe I've messed up something, I dunno).
Btw, it is not a clean install and I remember experiencing the same problem with Lion, one of the first days I've installed it, but then it went away (forever) after a day, so I didn't bother too much to find the cause.
Again, it seems like some sort of finder bug, the million question is: Why am I (apparently) the only one experiencing it? Thx for help

    Hi Giorgiovdb!
Unfortunately I cannot help you; all I did was test for you.
I did an upgrade over my Lion install with Mountain Lion which went fine. I just tested icon view in my Finder on different files and folders and here in my installation all stays fine; good readable like in column view!
The only thing you might try is change your Font in Finder and set it back to the original afterwards!
I quickly Google'd how to change fonts in the Finder as appearantly there's no obvious gui item for it:
    http://usermanifest.wordpress.com/2012/07/06/osx-finder-title-bar-font/
Try to see if it brings you anywhere!
At my post all fonts act normal after my upgrade to Mountain Lion; I don't do a clean install unless I really have to!
    Goodluck!

  • Mavericks Finder Behavior

I want the new Mavericks finder to behave in the following way:
    • I create a new window (command + N) and move it to the top of my viewport and resize it to be the full width of my viewport and one third the height
    • i leave it there
    • when i press Command + N again the new window should appear with the EXACT WIDTH AND HEIGHT OF THE LAST CREATED WINDOW and on top of the last one but slightly offset
Currently when i do this in Mavericks all i get is a randomly sized window placed in the center of my viewport and NOT AT ALL THE SAME WIDTH AND HEIGHT AS THE LAST WINDOW CREATED.
Is this possible in the new Mavericks OS?
Please say yes, as this is a way of working that is necessary for what i do.
I work with lots of files at once and am constantly dragging and dropping and referencing multiple directories at once to compare and copy items.
If I have to reszie my window each time to fit my needs this will be a chore.
I can see changing a behavior for some new tactics, but you shouldnt just do away with old behavior until you know for sure your customers are NOT using it.
I hope there is a solution to this or a patch on the way or perhaps I am overlooking something.
    Thanks
    Francesco

You can see by all the threads that they do. As Mavericks has only been out for a couple of weeks, perhaps none of the users here can help you with an answer to that as yet. You can contact Apple themselves on their Customer Support number in your country and ask them. We are all just users here, like yourself.

  • Mavericks finder sort folder on top feature?

    hi development team,
    just a humble suggestion ...
would be great that the mavericks finder include a feature to sort folder on top.
i don't want to install any bloated 3rd party finder apps that would solve this issue, because i want this basic feature to be native

Seems like it solved when I removed the "Show item info"

  • Mavericks finder

Is anybody else having trouble with Mavericks Finder? I have many files of different types viewable by the Finder. But Mavericks is having a hard time keeping them sorted in numerical or alphabetical order. I use the "Show View Options…" menu and select column view and browse, and Arrange by kind and Sort by name. It will sort them sometimes, but often when I open the finder windows again, they are scrambled. The Arrange remains, but the Sort breaks.

    althepal wrote:
I did find that by holding down the option while clicking on Arrange gets you a new secondary sort function that was causing most of my problems. However there is no visual feedback or clue that this function exists. I had to find it by chance
You can see both with ⌘J

The startup disk may need repairing ...
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to acces the built in utilities in  OS X Recovery

  • Lion finder bugs

hi - just wanted to report some finder bugs that I hope mac developers are already addressing.
    1) apple-tab to the finder does not automatically switch to the correct desktop space where finder windows automatically open or are already open... when I apple-tab to the finder then create a new window it works, but there shouldn't be an extra step.  I'm also curious why my previous preferences for which space applications open in has been preserved with the lion upgrade but the way to edit those preferences has been taken away... troblesom since I'd previously arranged all applications to work based on a 3x3 grid with the finder opperating center at space 5... now that a grid is no longer an option I might want to re-organize and not rely on automatic re-ordering.
    2) when I choose to view folders by the various options sometimes the categories (yesterday - previous 7 days - etc) will appear as folders in a list rather than dividers.  Doesn't happen often but bugs the heck out of me when it does.  Closing and reopening the window fixes it, as well as changing to do a different organization mode and back again... a little detail - but thats what makes mac great after all.
thanks guys - overall I'm enjoying lion very much.
    a

    also...
    3) when I 4-finger shift between spaces some finder windows which are apparently stuck in limbo appear during the transition then are gone again.

  • Why no Update yet even though Mavericks full of Finder bugs

In the Finder We have problems with Windows, folders(they stubborn and don't want to move where  you move them),  and regarding web related operations  TEXT operations and Text Edit, you can no longer  Copy text and images from a webpage and Pasting them to a Text Edit document. The text is really small and the images are not transferred.  Especially if you do it with Firefox..  The only way you can highlight text and images from a webpage and copy them into a text file is to  use SAFARI.. and then highlight the text and images in the webpage and press...  COMMAND + C+ CTRL   and it has to be in that order... one after the other..and hold each key..
Printing is weird too. The Text Edit Text looks good in your monitor but when you preview it for Print Preview it's super huge..So then you have to go back to your document and make the text tiny.
That and other problems including files and folders becoming invisible when you drop them accidentally into other files or something.
Why are we still on 10.9.5 with no update??? Isn't it time for an update to fix things?

oh Great    Does it fix many of the things from Mavericks?   And what if you have installed things in Mavericks like a thing that adds folder functions and stuf like that.    And i have a Mac Pro  2.66 Gzh Quad Core IntelXeon. from 2009.   10GB
I heard that yosemete is not good for the older macs.  I wonder if mine is considered old

  • Maverick's Finder bug when downloading or copying ?

Since the Maverick update I have 2 bugs : one major and one less important but still wanted to see if I am the only one with this happening...
The major bug is about the scrolling and I won't go into into details because their are already lots and lots of posting regarding that major major bug.
The second bug happens when either telecharging any kind of file or when compying any kind of file on the desktop ....the thumbnail which sort of tells us it's done never shows up even though the file has downloaded or been copied.
I get something like this .....and it stays like that even after being installed or moved elsewhere...weird huh !?
Am I the only one ?

    1) How much free space do you have on your Hard Drive?
    2) In Accounts > Login Item, how many App's are set to auto open at login?

  • Finder bugging

    Hi,
Since a couple of weeks Finder has been bugging pretty nasty and I can't seem to figure out why.
What happens is that when I'm in Finder browsing files, after a couple of seconds usually, it just stops working.
It's not freezing in a normal way.. It seems like the interface is freezing. The windows look buggy, file names or icons are missing and I can't click on anything or navigate anywhere.
This is an example of what the crashed window might look like:
Note how this is my home directory. Pretty empty right?
When I force quit/relaunch the thing (it doesn't state not responding, my MBP seems to think it's running without problems), it goes back to normal, only to go back to the drunk state I just described within a minute.
What is the cause of this problem? How can I solve this? I have verified and repaired both my partitions. Has my memory died? Other apps run fine.
    I'm on a mid-2010 MBP, Mavericks 10.9.2.

Two things to try and rule out possibilities.
    1) Use another account. Do you see the problem there?
    2) Boot into Safe Mode and use your Account. Do you see the problem then?
