OS X Mavericks for MacBook Pro w/ Retina

Hi,
I plan to buy the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display, 2.5 GHz, Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB Flash Drive.
Is there anyboy know whether I can upgrade to Mac OS X Mavericks later on? Will there be any additional cost to upgrade?
Thanks in advance for your input.
ppaisan.

Welcome!
First, we are only end-users like you so can speak to what Apple has done, but not what they will do in the future.
That said, historically, Apple have allowed a free update if you buy a new or refurb computer within a certain number of days before a major OS release. Can't remember the exact number but 30 days sticks in my mind. Normally you will see a banner or other announcements on the Apple Store web site when this goes into effect, so checking the Store is a good way to tell. If there is an Apple retail store in your area, they may already know how it will be handled.
If you need the computer now, get it anyway. The last three major upgrades has been only about US$20 instead of the $129 that was in effect for so long.
Enjoy!

why i don't install mac os x maverick for macbook pro retina later 2013?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The Late 2013 MacBook Pro already comes with OS X Mavericks. However, if you try to download OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store, you will get a message telling you that your MacBook Pro is not compatible, when it is.
This is caused because the Late 2013 MacBook Pro is running a special OS X Mavericks version which is different than the version available in the Mac App Store. This makes that you get an error message when you try to download OS X Mavericks even when you are using it.
Instead of downloading OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store, you can still download OS X Mavericks to reinstall OS X through OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 You will be able to download OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store when your MacBook Pro uses the same version as all other Macs

I see a mention of Google Chrome and VirtualBox in your log. Stop using those and see if the situation changes? From what we know so far, the problem is a software one (Apple's fault), not a hardware problem. Mountain Lion is supposed to fix the issue, which should be out in about a week. So you could wait til then, upgrade to ML, and see if its still crashing or not.

can i make a dmg file right after download? its really really long when using recovery and my ml from the regular macbook pro is not compatible with the retina and im not sure why it works well with other macs except for this one.  thanks so much. having a headache now on how to make it work.
As you can only get OS X from Internet Recovery, you can't get the OS X Mountain Lion stored on the HDD and make a bootable volume with it. Also, you can't install the OS X version you have on your other Mac because the hardware of this MacBook Pro with Retina display isn't compatible with that OS X version.
In your case, reinstall OS X and see what happens. If you can't reinstall OS X, take the computer to an Apple Store because you can't do anything with that MacBook Pro now

  • Adobe Reader Update for MacBook Pro with Retina Display

I recently purchased the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display and noticed when I downloaded Adobe Reader that it had not yet been updated to support the new Retina Display. If I remember correctly, it was announced that Adobe Photshop has been updated to support the new display. Will there also be an update for Reader any time soon?

    Hi,
Reader and Acrobat XI will support Retina display for both the user interface and document rendering with the September update.
For now, the UI is Retina capable but the document content is still rendered at a lower resolution.
    Few more weeks to go
    Best,

  • What exactly does the AppleCare cover for MacBook Pro with Retina Display?

I purchased the extended protection plan for my MacBook Pro with Retina Display 15" and my question is what exactly does it cover in what kind of situations (i.e. viruses, damaged ports, damaged charger, etc.)? I want to be able to take full advantage of the protection plan since it was a pretty big whole in my wallet.

AppleCare covers all the problems you have with your MacBook Pro with Retina display and the peripherals which came with it (your charger) if you have a hardware problem that you didn't cause. For example, after 2 or 3 years and 1000 charges, OS X says that your battery has to be replaced: in this case, you have to pay for the battery, because batteries have got a lifetime, and Unibody Macs batteries have got an average lifetime of about 1000 charges.
However, if the RAM gets damaged and you haven't done anything to cause it, you will get your computer repaired or replaced for free. AppleCare in a MacBook Pro with Retina display is very important, because near all the parts are soldered into the logic board and repairs are expensive

  • Custom Case for Macbook Pro 15 Retina

I have been looking for a place where I can create a custom hard physical case for a 15 inch macbook pro with retina display.  In my searchings I have only found custom skins and decals.  Does anybody know where I can create a custom plastic (or something like that) case for a macbook pro.  I DO NOT WANT TO GET A SKIN OR DECAL, BUT AN ACTUAL CASE.

Hi  Macsaregreat I found a company that does them the link is http://www.mrnutcase.com/en-GB/personalised-macbook-cover/ it is an actual hard plastic case for the top and bottom, I love mine came really quick as well.

  • Reliable, Affordable Printer for Macbook Pro w/ Retina??

I apologize ahead of time if this is being posted in the wrong place, but i'm looking for advice on getting a good printer for my Macbook Pro w/ Retina. I currently have an old Dell 1320c and although it setup fine and prints correctly the toner is now printing in gray and the lack of proper driver support makes troubleshooting the printer very difficult. In light of my recent printer troubles I decided to come here for some printer suggestions. As far as price range, I would like to spend no more than $150 for a new printer but if jumping up to $200 or something close greatly improves the quality, i'm open to more suggestions. This printer would only be used by myself at home and strictly for school assignments like word documents, powerpoints w/ pictures, etc. nothing too intense. I would not be printing actual photos and I don't think I need the speed of a laser printer to be honest. I would like a printer with GOOD support, meaning I can easily replace cartridges and not have to worry about replacing my printer for at least 2 years. Dell cartridges were pretty expensive and a lot of people had the same gray output problem that I experienced before the printer even reached 1000 prints. Regardless, this baby lasted me a good 4-5 years before giving me real trouble so I'm hoping a decent printer won't be hard to find.
My main concern is compatibility! I want a printer that is fully compatible with my macbook pro and allows me to utilize their menu services, easily access printer menus, check ink, etc. After that I just want something reliable and consistent with good product support. I will be using the printer every week during school to print notes and assignments, but not photographs and no need for a scanner. I'm not sure what other information to include but I hope I covered enough to give you guys an idea of what im looking for. Ive had trouble with DELL products in general so maybe just a different brand suggestion would be helpful but thanks ahead of time!
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I don't mind wireless vs. usb as long as theres not much price difference. Also it might be worth noting that the macbook I have has no CD drive so I would want a printer that I can set up without a CD drive, thanks!

I don't have a specific recommendation, but if at all possible you should choose an AirPrint-enabled printer from the (possibly incomplete) list in the linked support article. It will need no software or configuration, and will work with iOS devices.

  • Apple care protection plan for macbook pro with retina display

hi!!! i recently purchased macbook pro with retina display. Im curious about the apple care protection plan to extend the warranty of my macbook. I would just like to ask if the apple care protection plan includes battery replacement w/in  the next 2 yrs?

it is like car insurance. You purchase it hoping to never need it. But thank your lucky stars for having it after the sheet metal goes CRUNCH!
BTW, AC needs to be activated while the base warranty is in effect. This means you can wait till the last month or so and avoid having to plonk all the cash up front.

  • Do apple protection plan for macbook pro cover retina or is it just macbook pro

does apple care for macbook pro 15"/17" also cover til macbook with retina or not??

Covers all Mac models. Just be sure to order the correct AC item for YOUR specific model. Price is contingent on the model covered.
Edit: it appears that the AC 15" MBP package covers the regulars and the Retinas as well for that size. To be on the safe side, pick the Retina option from the list:

  • Speck See-Thru case for MacBook Pro with Retina Display 15 inch

Hi, I recently purchased the Speck See-Thru case for the MacBook Pro Retina. The case seems to fit very snugly and requires some degree of force to remove. The top half of the case proves to be more difficult than the bottom half. Is it normal that it takes some force to pop off the tabs of the case? I am probably over worrying but just want to make sure. Thanks

I have a Speck see-thru for mine and yes, they fit quite snugly. Probably to prevent a "rattling" feeling that would feel even worse. As time goes by and you inevitably have to take it off every so often to clean underneath, the snugness goes away.
Yes, in spite your best efforts, dust somehow finds its way in there and gathers in the corners which soon becomes unbearable and off it has to come. Guess that's the downside of transparency.   Maybe next time I'll get an opaque black model....

  • Resolution scaling for MacBook Pro (non-retina)

I see that the MacBook Pro Retina has a nifty resolution scaling feature that can make the fonts/icons look bigger while maintaining the display's native resolution.
Does the non-Retina MBP have the same ability? I would really like to be able to scale by 125% (fonts/icons appear 125% bigger) while keeping native resolution of 1440x900.

Sorry, but I don't think it's possible.  The Retina display does let you choose a couple options that are higher resolution than half, but as far as I can tell those appear blurry just like selecting that smaller resolution does for you, and all it really does is make the OS treat it like that's the resolution.  At best you'd only get a few things taht would look any better than just straight up setting your resolution to 1280x800.  I looked around a lot and wasn't able to find anything.
@pcpu  Sorry, but that wasn't what he was asking.  On the Retina MacBook you have 4 or 5 scale options, a few of them make it so you don't have the full resolution possible, but it's bigger than 1/2 the display resolution anyway, and I guess it might display UI elements that are vector in the actual full resolution, but most things look blurry from what I've heard.  He was asking if it was possible to do that same thing on his display, which I looked into, and I was unable to find any way to make the computer do the same thing on a non-retina display.  Telling him about how retina works isn't what he wanted, he wanted the UI bigger, and the UI is entirely vector or some such at this point so it would have looked just fine bigger if he could scale.
