OS X Mavericks keychain trouble

I have installed OS X mavericks on my 4 yr old imac. I keep getting asked to enter passwords for different applications to use my local keychain. I never set up any passwords for these applications and I have tried all passwords I use but they are rejected. I now have tried to perform the keychain first Aid. But my iMac was bought second hand and it is showing the previous owners name. My gutt feeling is that it wants his password and that is the problem. Is there a way I can delete him ?

Reset the NVRAM.
If that doesn't work, see below.

  • Mail & Mavericks & Keychain Access

    Hello,
After updating to Mavericks (from Mountain Lion), I noticed that there's a new keychain called "local items" inside Keychain Access App.
so I have a couple of questions regarding this and my usage of Mail:
    1) from what I read in this forum, "local items" is the keychain created by Mavericks, it should sync to the login keychain (which is usually, and certainly in my case, the default keychain, meaning it is in bold face on the left hand side of the Keychain Access window). And as far as I understand, if you have icloud enabled, this keychain would be called "icloud keychain", if not, it will remain the name "local items", is this correct? I do not want to have anything to do with icloud, so I don't have any icloud keychain. When I log into the my account on the mac both the login and the "local items" keychain are unlocked (I guess this makes sense if they are supposed to be synced. So basically this is my understanding of this "local items" keychain, please correct/inform me if this understanding is not correct.
    2) now, I noticed that the passwords that I typed in for my e-mail accounts (set up in Apple's Mail) are saved inside this "local items" keychain. So everything seems to be fine. However, I noticed that the passwords saved inside this "local items" keychain cannot be edited in the "access control" panel (this is accessed by double clicking the password item and click on the "access control" tab.) This is odd because all the other items in the "login" keychain can be edited in this way.
    3) so my main goal is to ask Mail to NOT remember my password (I know this is not the prefer setting for most users, but I prefer to have it this way). In Leopard, Mail had a little checkbox where you set up your account that asks the application to NOT remember the password. This is really handy because it prompts me to re-enter the password whenever I restart the application, which is exactly what I want it to behave. But since upgrading to Mountain Lion (I'm not sure how it is in Snow Leopard or Lion, as I jumped from Leopard straight to Mountain Lion, and now to Mavericks), this box has disappearred. I found a work around online. Before Mavericks, the mail account passwords are saved (if I remember correctly) in the login keychain, the work around works by saving (i.e. dragging) all your email  passwords into a separate/new keychain (let's call it Keychain A) which has a different password than your login keychain (which, by definition, is unlocked upon login). So I set this up and Mail automatically knows to prompt me to enter the password for Keychain A in order to access my e-mail account passwords. This doesn't behave exactly like unchecking "remember the password" box in Leopard, but it comes close. and I was happy with this work around. However, now having upgraded to MAvericks, Mail insisted on using "local items" as keychain, and keeps asking me the passwords for my e-mail accounts (NOT the  local item keychain password, since my local item keychain IS synced up with Login keychain, therefore they are both unlocked upon me logging in) so that it can store them. The thing is I do NOT want the e-mail passwords to be stored inside "local items" keychain (because I don't want account access to equal e-mail access (for reasons I do not want to get into, but I feel like this is not too much to ask and was possible before so why not now?).
Could someone please help me out with this?  I've called Apple, and they were quite annoyed with me because the person I talked to keeps saying that I'm not using keychain for the way it is suppoed to be used, but my question then, is, if I canot get applications to use special keychains I set up, what's the use of the function "add new keychain" inside keychain access?  (in fact, the phone supporter basically keep saying "I don't know" to my questions and finally offered me to talk to a senior advisor, at that point I had to leave (and after 1hour on the phone I was quite fed up anyway). so I thought I should turn to the forum.....
    so a recap/summary:
my login and local items keychain sync up fine
but I don't want Mail to store my e-mail passwords in the local items keychain
I want to make Mail use another keychain (i.e. a keychain I set up myself), can we possible to this?
or another other work around that will make Mail to prompt me to enter passwords when I fire up the application (not constantly, but just when I restarting the application, OR after the computer wakes up)
    I'd appreciate any pointers!
    thank you very much!
    sakura

I have the same concerns.  I'm frustrated that the Mail app doesn't currently allow you to use a separate keychain for the passwords.  After many years with Keychain I am being tempted to look to a third party.  Or perhaps it's time to look for a third party mail app?  This is a security issue since email is the primary way that a password change is verified with other accounts.

  • Wifi passwords missing from Mavericks keychain

In OS X 10.8 and previous, all my wifi passwords were stored in my keychain, and were viewable in keychain access.
Following my upgrade of the OS to Mavericks, I now can't locate or view any wifi (AirPort) network passwords that were previously saved in my OS keychain.
I DON'T have iCloud keychain activated, and never had.
Please can someone help me out with this issue?
Thank you in advance for any assistance that you're able to provide!

I had the same issue just now, but I found the solution.
You need to select a different keychain in the top left of the window.
normally "login" is selected, and I found the wifi passwords in "Local Items".
    hope that helps others.

  • Mavericks Keychain keeps asking to unlock "Local Items" after install

Today I Updated my iMac from Mountain Lion to Mavericks.
After Installing the first boot went smooth but the mac after booting asked me to reboot again.
On the second Restart when the login window appeared also apeared a Password input window asking me to enter the password for several "LOCAL ITEMS" in the keychain but when I type my administrator password it won't work.
I hit the ESC key and the window appears several times asking for different password for several items that need access to "Local Items" in the keychain.
I tried opening the KeyChain and running the KeyChain firstaid but it didn't work.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Your login.keychain password is out of sync with the new iCloud keychain and needs to be re-sync'd.
The new iCloud keychain is either called "Local items" if you don't have syncing enabled or "iCloud" if you enabled iCloud keychain sync.
    Open 'Keychain Access' Application
Select the 'login' keychain from the keychains list
Click the lock at the top to lock the login keychain
Click the lock again to unlock the login keychain
After entering your login keychain password you should be presented with a dialog:
Clicking the reset button will re-sync your login.keychain password with the iCloud keychain password.
If everything from the above fails for whatever reason the last resort you can do the following:
    Open terminal
    cd ~/Library/Keychains
    ls
When you 'ls' here you will see a folder that contains a bunch of random number liks so:
94ED610F-DD96-4ECF-A2BC-7D2F8651A464  (this number is unique on each system)
    rm -rf 94ED610F-DD96-4ECF-A2BC-7D2F8651A464
    Reboot
<when you log back in everything should be back to normal>

  • Mavericks bugs, trouble with computer

I installed Mavericks two days ago and since than my computer is living his own life. My mouse is all over the place clicking on things.
I can't use my computer after downloading this new software, never had trouble with Mac but this is really annoying.
Now I want to delete Mavericks but I just found out there's only one way to make a back-up and re-install everything.
Others have the same problem? Is there going to be an new update to get this problem fixed?
    Cheers, Marja

There are several possible causes for this issue. Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried until it's resolved. Some may not apply in your case.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article, and also this one, if applicable. A damaged or defective AC adapter could be the cause, even if it's the right kind.
    2. Press down all four corners of the trackpad at once and release. If there's any effect, it's likely to be temporary, and in that case the unit must be serviced or replaced.
    3. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and delete all pointing devices other than the trackpad, if applicable. Disconnect any USB pointing devices. By a "pointing device," I mean a peripheral that moves the cursor, such as a trackpad, mouse, trackball, or graphics tablet. A plain keyboard is not a pointing device.
    4. Start up in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you restart as usual, stop here and post your results. Do the same if you can't start in safe mode. If there was no difference in safe mode, go on to the next step.
    5. Reset the System Management Controller.
    6. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    7. A swollen battery in a portable computer can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
    8. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    9. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    10. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    11. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

Does anyone kbnow how to have Keychain use passwords in my iOS device (iPad)?  I find my self writing down passowrds now which completely defeats the concept behind Keychain and iCloud, right?  Thanks for any help.

  • Now running Snow Leopard; will it update to Mavericks without trouble?

Update a mid-2011 iMac to Mavericks ok?

As Apple haven't announced anything about the upgrade path it's difficult to say. However, from the information they have made avaiilable and noting the Mac you have, I think it's a fair bet your machine will have no problems running it.

  • Safari 3.2:  keychain trouble

I updated to Safari 3.2, and now when I try to access a passcoded website for which my username and password are stored in my Keychain, I get this message: "Safari has been updated. Do you want to allow the new version to access the same keychain items (such as passwords) as the previous version?" When I click "Change All", it spins for three minutes or more and then doesn't fill in my password on that site. Plus, this is happening each time I try to get on a passcoded website. Help!

After many actions that were unsuccessful, I went to the Mac OSX Software link in the apple menu (top left) and redownloaded, then reinstalled Safari 3.2.1 from the apple website.
When I then restarted (which I was prompted to do after the reinstall), opened Safari, and went to the passcode-asking websites, I got the same message saying that Safari had been updated, etc. (see original question), and I clicked "Change All." This went much more quickly than before (10 seconds v. 4 minutes) and then all seemed to be fixed--each password-asking website had my username and password already entered in automatically and there was no new "Safari has been updated, etc." pop-up, as had been the case before. The only snag: when I directed Safari here to write this, I got that same message again. With trepidation, I clicked "change all" again and after about 60-90 seconds, the pop-up disappeared and my username and password had been entered (which hadn't been happening prior to the redownloading). I rechecked my visits to password-asking sites, and there was still no funny pop-up and my password stuff had been automatically entered from Keychain. So, fingers crossed, it seems to be fixed.

  • Does Mavericks cause trouble with iDVD?

Why since I upgraded to Mavericks, some software doesn't work anymore? Such as iDVD, Adobe After effects, FCP sometimes shows an error message in a red background that didn't do before...

iDVD 7.1.2 works as advertised with Mavericks for me.  What version are you using and what happens when you try to launch it?

  • Creating multiple users - keychain troubles

I have decided to create seperate user accounts for each of my kids (2). I am the administrator. In both of the kids user accounts, I get repeated dialogue boxes asking for a keychaing password. One example I just got in my sons account reads: "Safari wants to use keychains login". I type in his password and am told it is invalid. I type in mine (as the admin) and am told it is invalid. This happens not only in Safari. It also occurs in my daughters account - but not mine. Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks in advance....Karen

    Hi,
I'm sorry for posting picture, and thanks for the reply.
The script I used was on the picture I posted yesterday, in any case I'll just type it here
    Import-Module -Name ActiveDirectory
    Import-Csv -Path "C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop\users.csv" | ForEach {New-ADUser
    -GivenName="$_.First_Name"
    -SurName="$_.Last_Name"
    -UserPrincipalName=("$_.User_name"+"@jesyang.local")
    -AccountPassword=(ConvertTo-SecureString -AsPlainTect "P@ssw0rd" -Force)
    -ChangePasswordAtLogon=$true
    -Enabled=$true}
    Result:
Powershell is asking me to supply a value for parameter.
Now I got my script working. Instead typing the codes on vertical manner, I just type all throughout like this (though i made little changes on the script):
    Import-csv "C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop\users.csv" | ForEach-Object {New-ADUser -Name $_.Name-GivenName $_.First_Name -Surname $_.Last_name -UserPrincipalName ($_.User_Name + "@jesyang.local") -SamAccountName $_.SamAccount-AccountPassword
    (ConvertTo-SecureString -AsPlainText "P@ssw0rd!!" -Force) -ChangePasswordAtLogon $true -Enabled $true -Path "CN=Users,DC=jesyang,DC=local"}
Is writing powershell script should be continuous?

Please read the above responses very carefully.

  • Keychain trouble

    Hi all
I recently had a problem with my Keychain password chainging back to my Admin Password on it's own from the Password I had set. This was easy to sort, I simply changed the PW back to what I wanted within Keychain Access.
However this afternoon I was prompted to enter my PW to access a web site and it wouldn't accept it. So I tried my admin PW hoping that the same as before had happened. It hadn't, it ended up after many troubleshooting attempts that I couldn't gain access my Keychain at all. I had to reset my Keychain and start all over, hundreds of passwords lost.
Just as a precaution I have left my Keychain PW the same as my Admin PW for the moment! I am however paranoid that the same will happen again.
Can anyone throw any light on what may have happened here?
    Thanks in advance. Derek.

After many actions that were unsuccessful, I went to the Mac OSX Software link in the apple menu (top left) and redownloaded, then reinstalled Safari 3.2.1 from the apple website.

  • Clean install mavericks and migrate time machine

I have been having lots of trouble with my MacBookPro, 17", late 2009. Seems like it takes forever to boot or to launch apps. I have reinstalled th OS several times and done a full restore from TimeMachine twice. I still see the beachball for hours each day. I am now trying to do a full backup to Time Machine with the System excluded so that if I do a clean install of the OS, I won't recorrupt the system when I migrate the backup. My question relates to some posts I have read that say Mavericks has trouble migrating TimeMachine. Any advice would be appreciated.

I did exactly this on my mid-2009 15" MacBook Pro, only I have the boot SSD in the optical disk bay and left the HDD in the disk bay. What you want to avoid is having only one copy of your data, be it on the old HDD or as a Time Machine or other backup; although the risks are small, they are not zero.
Since I had multiple backups, I wiped and formatted my HDD, and did a clean install of 10.9 onto the SSD and then used Migration Assistant to move everything I wanted to it. I then created the folders and links on the HDD and put the files I wanted there, mainly large media files which are read sequentially and would not benefit as much from an SSD.

  • Keychain won't save. Driving me insane.

For months the keychain would not save one password out of three email accounts with the same provider, all the same password. Finally I got some advice at the .Mac sync forum to Reset the Keychain from Preferences. That worked as it basically started over. But now there is an Amazon Seller password that won't save. I say "Yes" each time to save but it still asks each time.
When I try to go to .Mac to change the sync'ing of Keychain I get an error saying the keychain can't be saved showing the error # -2147415734. Anyone know what that is?
    Keychain troubles yes?

I followed your advice and we will see. When I opened that one item in the keychain list and checked the box to 'show password' the error dialogue came up saying 'access to that item restricted'. Any idea why that would be?

  • Keychain can't communicate with icloud

I am having an issue with my imac getting keychain turned on for icloud.
Keychain appears to function normally on my iPad and iPhone4S - They are saving passwords in safari, etc.
I recently had an issue where I had to use my AppleID to reset my administrator password, and after that keychain ceased to function on my imac.
I followed the steps to set aside the old 'login' keychain, and created a new one one named Notharcus, which I have written down relevant password information for.  Then I went forward and used my computer normally and all seemed well until I went to some favored websites and noticed that passwords weren't saving.  I then did a little research and ended up setting up the screensaver/sleep mode password in order to autofill even when websites do not want autofill.  This step didn't work either, so I went into System Preferences, and opened up iCloud and noticed that Keychain was unchecked! However, when I attempted to check the box, it prompted me for my AppleID and then immediately popped up an error.
The spinning 'busy' icon next to keychain continued until I closed the window.
When this happened, I then did some searching on the forums and I found
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4644 - iCloud Keychain Trouble shooting - did not have an answer for me that I could find, although I tried several options that sounded close.
https://discussions.apple.com/message/23509286#23509286 was a thread that gave me hope of a simple fix, and the only thread i could find with my same error message.  The fix did not work however.

    Hi
I had the same problem and the linked solution involving restarting an AirPort didn't work for me either.
But, I did fix my problem.
Try running Keychain Access > Repair Keychain
It gave me this  weird Local Access keychain prompt.  I followed these instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5362
Then when I reset, I was able to reenable iCloud Keychain.
    Hope this helps,
