OS X Mavericks Mail losing contact with outgoing mail server after waking from sleep.
I upgraded my MAcBook Air to OS X Mavericks two days ago. Since then I have had intermittent problems connecting to my outgoing mail server. I get the "Unable to Receive Mail" error message. When I click "Take All Accounts Online," I get an additonal error message stating that connection to the host on the specifided port failed. I am using a different outgoing server for mail and I can continue to send emails.
Putting the computer to sleep seems to trigger the problem. Sometimes restaring the computer resloves the problem, sometimes it does not. Any help would be greatly appriciated as this problems his disrupted my workflow significantly.
Fixed. In case anyone has the same issue, I went to Internet Accounts, unclicked mail, and then re-clicked it. It worked. Disabling it in the mail configuration did not work, but it did in Internet Accounts.

Macbook Retina with Mountain Lion issues after waking from sleep.
Macbook Retina with Mountain Lion has the spinning beach ball of death after waking from sleep a few times. Anyone else seeing this? A fresh boot is very quick, but waking from sleep lags at times. Then after a few times the spinning beachball of death appears and nothing is responsive making me reboot the machine.
I've been suffering from this too, and am currently trying this:
http://www.ewal.net/2012/09/09/slow-wake-for-macbook-pro-retina/
Seems to be tied to this 'Power Nap' feature. I tuned it for 12 hours instead of 24. -
On my new iMac, mail has no sound after waking from sleep. If I select do not wake for network access in general preferences, the problem does not occur. Anyone have an idea on how to fix this? Thanks --
Same here on an older iMac since Lion. Thanks for the uncheck wake for network access tip though, it doesn't do it either in that case, I will leave it that way.

Trackpad unresponsive after waking from sleep with new 17" MacBookPro
We have two 17" MacBookPros and both have this symptom. After waking from sleep or booting, the trackpad is unresponsive. Eventually full control comes back to the trackpad but it takes a while.
Both computers are up to date with all software.
Any thoughts?
Really irritating.Perhaps they are freezing for awhile? Maybe basic repairs are in order.
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.

Losing WiFi connection after waking from sleep
I've iMac 27 in. with recently upgraded OS X Lion to 10.7.4. After this was done the problems strated with connecting to Wi-Fi through my Time Capsule (2TB, 802.11n 4th Gen) after waking from sleep. Everything works fine when iMac is started after shutdown. My internet router is connected through ethernet cable to Time Capsule and iMac is using Wi-Fi connection with Time Capsule.
I've tried to install iMac Wi-Fi update v1.0 but it I cann't do it because my OS X is 10.7.4 and the update installer is stopping the installation after the check of my OS version.
Could anybody help to solve this problem, please?but when the
computer goes to sleep and is then awakened, there
are no wireless networks listed in chooser... like
there are no wireless networks available...
Hi greaser5!
That is definitely NOT typical operation. Yes, your Core Duo iMac must restart after sleep, but It should reconnect to a working network instantaneously (less than a second), although it will probably take longer than that for your iMac to fully restart after sleep and actually be able to use the network.
Delete all prior wireless configurations that you have saved on the "Location:" selector of the Network panel of System Preferences. On the Network>AirPort>AirPort panel also delete all your preferred wireless networks. Click the "Apply Now" button.
Restart your Mac. Turn on AirPort. Use the Network panel's "Assist me..." button and the following blue "Assistant..." button to configure a fresh wireless connection to your working wireless network. This will be fresh and total, just as you did when your iMac was new. There is no need to give your network either a new name or a new password, as the old ones will work just fine in the new configuration, since as you know, the current network is working fine, the iMac simply can no longer connect to it correctly using its current configuration.
I have not been able to test the above on a Core 2 Duo, so do not know first hand if it will make any difference on those iMacs, but that or some similar fiddling should resolve the issue. -
I've got a Thunderbolt Display that I use with my Macbook Air (mid 2012) - usually in clamshell mode.
When I let the computer go to sleep, and then wake it up by clicking the mouse, the monitor turns back on but the colors are washed out and purple looking.
The display goes back to normal when I unplug and replug it to my laptop.
I first noticed this problem after upgrading to Mavericks.
I made a video demonstrating the issue here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19179-MVpWA&feature=youtu.be
Any ideas?
Thanks!
WillSame thing for me too. Late 2012 13" MBP Retina. I have to unplug the Thunderbolt cable and plug it back in.
This has only started for me in the last two days. The first two weeks of Mavericks was ok.
Update: I just got back from a trip. I was using the laptop separate from the Thunderbolt display. I hadn't restarted since I returned and connected the monitor. I've just rebooted, and put the computer to sleep. After resuming from sleep, the display is ok. Maybe try rebooting? I'll update if it continues. -
Mail app frozen after waking from sleep
I have Yosemite 10.10.3 (Public Beta). Every time my Macbook Air wakes from sleep, the mail app is locked up with the spinning beach ball. I have to force quit the app and restart Mail. This has been happening since 10.10 I believe. I have of course restarted my MB many times but the problem continues to consistently occur when waking from sleep. Curious if anyone else has run into this and if they found a fix.
I reinstalled Yosemite and it fixed the problem briefly even after the updates were applied. But now it is back to freezing every time it wakes from sleep. I am now on 10.10.4 and still having the problem.

When I wake up my iMac after sleep, i get a variety of intermittent - but mostly FREQUENT and FRUSTRATING problems including:
Notes app is offline - as stated by a message in the window bar. If I close Notes and reopen, the app appears to be online. However, Notes does NOT update with items I know are on my iPad or in the web iCloud. Furthermore, if I create a new note on my iMac, the new Note does not upload to iCloud. This is IRRITATING!
Pages and Numbers - similar situation. I can edit a Pages or Numbers document on my iMac (stored on the iCloud). But then the Pages doc doesn't ALWAYS get uploaded to the iCloud. Then I end up with conflicted versions of the file in the cloud, my iPad, and the two iMacs I use. Then I get CONFUSED and FRUSTRATED. For example, consider these steps:
Open Pages on my iMac, edit an iCloud file, then save and close file
Pages/File/Open/iCloud - I note in the iCloud file list the edited file has a little 'cloud' icon against its name. From experience this warns me of TROUBLE - namely that the file has NOT yet been uploaded to the iCloud. However, I just checked the new Beta iCloud on the web, and to my surprise, the file edited on my iMac is apparently in the icloud. But now, I edit the iCloud version, and the changes DO NOT appear on my iMac pages version. OK I realise its in Beta version...
So now, I open my iPad, open Pages. I note the iCloud version of my edited document updates to my iPad, as indicated by a blue download line. 'It just works' as Steve Jobs claimed at Apple Developers Conference a couple of years back. Again, the edited version form my iPad is now 'up in the cloud' correctly....
Oh - and now mysteriously the Pages version on my Imac has become synchronised with my iPad/iCloud version! Luck ... but that's about all I can say. It doesn't always happen. I'm LUCKY today.
Meanwhile, the Note I created on my iMac (Item 1 above) has still not yet appeared on my iPad or iCloud... even though I HOPE it would be given that Pages on my iMac, iPad and iCloud are chatting nicely now! The Note says it's in my iCloud - but NOT. Similarly, notes updated or added on my iPad, which appear in iCloud, are NOT on my iMac.
Mail - last but NOT LEAST! and MOST INFURIATING!!! My Gmail, Vodafone NZ and Orcon accounts (in Mail) are all active and receiving after the night's sleep. However, my iCloud mail account has the dreaded offline.
The message on Mail is "There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “ICloud - [email protected]” or try again. The server returned the error: The server “p03-imap.mail.me.com” cannot be contacted on port 993." Despite the message, mail was received this morning at 8:59 am ... some time before I woke-up my computer (a late start this morning).
If I sent an email FROM my .me iCloud account TO my Vodafone account, the message whooshes away, it's in my SENT box. But it doesn't get delivered to my Vodafone account on my iMac Mail, or anywhere else, Despite the message being listed in my 'Sent' mailbox!!!
In contrast, a message sent from my Gmail account to my Vodafone account (in Mail) gets sent and received almost instantly on my iMac and iPad.
All of the above mishaps are extremely frustrating, as I rush off from working on my iMac at home, get to my iMac at work and find documents I have been updating on my home iMac not available correctly on my work iMac ... or even my iPad. I expect these things from Apple to 'just work'. Furthermore, emails I THINK I have sent (as indicated by them appearing in the Sent folder on my home iMac) ... have not actually been despatched.
Frankly, I can no longer rely or recommend the Apple iCloud stuff, so I am converting more and more to relying on DropBox and Google.
These problems only became apparent since I updated to one of the Mountain Lion versions... I can't say when.
Oh - if I shutdown and restart the computer my Mail works OK. Guess what, I don't want to do that each time I want to use Mail!
Technicals:
My iMac is connected by Ethernet cable to my Apple TimeCapsule. The TimeCapsule is connected by Ethernet cable to my Orcon Genius Modem.
Obviously, my internet connection is A-OK, as I am able to use Firefox to make this posting!

Macbook pro with maverick 10.9.2 loses internet connection after waking from sleep
Recently installed maverick 10.9.2 on my macbook pro and have been experiencing lost internet connection (dsl connected via ethernet) after computer wakes from sleep. Any ideas?
Me too!
I am on a MAC Pro desktop and I am having the same issues. I go to system preferences and just click the network icon. Then I close mail and when it opens it now sees the network. This is getting very annnoying. -
Why does Mavericks crash after waking from sleep?
Upgrading to Mavericks has been a catastrophe. Suddenly it appears I have the most unstable computer I have ever owned.
I have a 2010 Mac Book Pro, OSX 10.9.
Every them the computer is woken from sleep, irrespective of the program running the computer has a kernel panic and crashes.
Also, it intermittently now says there is no Wifi hardware installed. Occasionally if I Cmd+Option+P+R it works for a short while and then again crashes.
Is anyone having this combination of issues? All help would be hugely appreciated.Hi. Sorry to cut in, but I believe this is the same problem with the sleep/wake crashing? Brand new MBA, OS X 10.9. Any ideas?
Best regards,
Tuomas

Mail won't connect after waking from sleep
5K display iMac running Yosemite 10.2.2: When I first boot my iMac mail works perfectly as does the rest of my internet connection. I am using Ethernet directly connected to the router, but the same thing will happen if I use the wifi connection. Router is directly connected to the cable modem.
If I put the iMac to sleep and come back the next morning: I will see new messages available in my gmail and other accounts that have loaded during the night. If I hit the "get new messages" button, sometimes it will get the initial group of messages (IMAP) and move them into the POP gmail account, but most of the time mail will just fail to make a connection. The connection doctor will tell me that I'm not connecting to the internet. However, if I go to Safari or any other internet app, I have no trouble connecting.
Then, somewhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours after waking the iMac it magically connects - until the next time I put the iMac to sleep. Quitting and restarting Mail makes no difference. I have already deleted Sophos and anything else that others seemed to suggest would cause a problem. I have no trouble seeing anything in the mbox messages stored on the iMac. I just can't send or receive mail until it comes back to life.
Suggestions are gratefully appreciated.I don't yet have Q2007, waiting for first patch to show up, but I would look for a conflict with other programs or background processes, lack of RAM, or whether you migrated some PPC application or libraries.
I see that Quicken 2006 got an update Sept. 9th.
One of the fixes in the Q2006 R5 patch:
Stability improvements were made to prevent Quicken from quitting unexpectedly when launching with certain internal files corrupted.
I would reinstall Quicken.
Rosetta:
I know it runs PPC, but if someone didn't tell me that PPC apps run under Rosetta, I would not know it was there (it isn't a listed process, and you can't choose whether to use Rosetta or not, like choosing between Preview and Acrobat). Only because under Get Info: Kind: Application (PPC) - and you would have to know that equates to Rosetta.
So you're sure it is working fine in Rosetta... I read 10.4.8 is suppose to improve Rosetta...
The best way to improve Rosetta is to have 2GB RAM.

Issue with battery after waking from sleep ...
Hey Everyone,
I just recently starting having battery power issues when I awake my machine from sleep. If I am working with a full battery ( or almost full ) say 80% and I put my machine to sleep, it goes to sleep (like it should). If I flip the machine over and press the button on the battery to check it's level I get 4 out of 5 green lights. This is all normal. Now for the strange part ... when I wake the machine back up, regardless of how long it has been asleep the battery meter switches to Red and "calculating..." and basically it shows the battery as empty. If I check the green lights on the battery at this point I get only 1 flashing green light. I do not however get the power warning message. If I check the battery levels in System Profiler it shows my full charge as around 1600 mAh ( around 5500 before it goes to sleep ) and remaining capacity at 0 ( around 4420 before sleep ).
Now, if I continue using the machine it doesn't run out of power ( obviously because the battery is still pretty much full although the system and battery itself doesn't think so ). If I wait long enough the "calculating..." status eventually corrects itself and suddenly I have 80% power and everything has returned to normal! However, if the machine goes to sleep before this, it won't wake up and I need to basically plug the machine in ... then it will turn on and switches to "Charging" which only take about 20 minutes to get a full charge seeing how the battery isn't really empty.
I have read all the posts on the battery issues and I have a machine that's only a few weeks old. It did not experience these problems at first. It seems as if they appeared after I ran the firmware upgrade.
Has anyone else experienced this behaviour? I have done a battery calibration with no luck ... I really feel it is a software issue and not hardware from what I can gather. Any ideas?
I should also note that if I put the machine to sleep with a full battery and also with the power adaptor still plugged in ( and green ) ... the machine wakes up just fine. However, if it goes to sleep on battery power then the trouble begins.
Cheers,
Michael.
MacBook Pro - 2GHz Intel Core Duo - 1 GB RAM Mac OS X (10.4.6)Have you reset your PMU? The Apple website has instructions for doing that. It sounds like some power management problem, but beware of your battery bulging, which I'm sure is an actual chemical change. I actually only noticed my battery bulging when I removed my battery to reset the PMU, which didn't help me. Apple replaced my battery promptly... Your problem is different from the usual bulging battery, though, so I would reset the PMU.
I understand why you think it is software/firmware related, but I don't buy it completely... Near as I can tell, the charge indicator LEDs on the battery are technically independent of the computer, they still work if you take the battery out. I had a bulging battery and saw some funny things with the LEDs: the computer would completely shut down and I would get no LED signal, not even one light flashing. If I left the computer alone for a few hours, the LEDs would work again, and I could even turn on the computer and get up to 5 minutes of uptime out of it. Have you checked if your battery bulges?
Another thing you might try is check to see if the firmware update was successful. I read somewhere that there was a risk of the update failing and about a procedure for reverting the firmware. Find out how from Apple, though, some people post instructions on the discussions that are incomplete. -
Problems with wifi network after waking from sleep
I have recently started using a new wifi network and have had some problems connecting to it. When i first tried to connect it gave a message that said "An error occured while trying to join". After some trial and error, I found that I could connect by going to network preferences, clicking "Assist me...", then "Diagnositcs...", clicking the AirPort dot then continue, then clicking on the network name and continue, then it prompts for a password, but there isnt one so i just pushed continue and all of a sudden it connected. I figured it was functional now, but after waking it from sleep mode, the error message popped back up. The only way I know to connect is through that annoying diagnostics path... What is the Problem, is it the computer or the router or the settings on the admin computer? (by the way, I don't know what kind of router it is, but its definantly not an apple airport)
Sorry to drag this back up, but I may have found the source of the problem, I just need the solution. When I first created settings for the network, it automatically "detected" that the security was WPA2 Enterprise, and knowing there was no password, I just pushed join and it saved it that way. When I go through diagnositics as described before, it lists WEP as the encryption. I had a friend with almost the same problem, but in tiger. They were able to fix it by changing the encryption on the login screen that comes up when you click on the network name from the menu bar. But that screen no longer exists in Leopard, it only goes by previous settings. How do I change the encryption in settings, I'm sure it will fix the problem...

Issues with MacBook after waking from sleep
I use my MacBook with an external display, mouse and keyboard most of the time. Frequently, when I unplug and wake my MacBook from sleep, a few odd things will happen:
- Finder (the desktop) will stop working. I usually have to restart it by pressing "Cmd Option Esc."
- The graphical transition for Spaces will not initiate. Changing from one Space to another will be instant. Clicking on the Spaces icon and going back to the desktop fixes this issue.
- The Dock will have a black pixel outline at the top. Again, initiating Spaces from the Dock fixes this issue.
- If iTunes is open, clicking on another view from the source window (i.e., going from Music to Podcasts) will move the window location.
I've experienced these issues before I formatted my machine (I was also running a previous version of 10.5) so I'm going to rule out an OS issue on my end. But I'm thinking it could be software or hardware related - anyone have any similar issues?I've been suffering from this too, and am currently trying this:
http://www.ewal.net/2012/09/09/slow-wake-for-macbook-pro-retina/
Seems to be tied to this 'Power Nap' feature. I tuned it for 12 hours instead of 24. -
My iTunes remote app on my ipad mini will work fine for a while and then it will lose the library. I then have to turn off sharing on the computer and then turn it back on. This will work for a while and then I will have to repeat the process. Help!
I have just found the problem to be windows firewall on my library PC
I can only presume there has been an update to windows firewall or iTunes
all the relevant programs were on the allowed list
I'm now currently running with firewall turned off on my library PC.
I'll update when i have found the rogue setting.
