Thanks very much for the advice. I trawled through the other answers on the site and it appears others had the same issue. I doubled the available space and the install went like clockwork... which is what one would norma;ly expect from Apple :-)
Maybe Apple should have a ' definitely read me first' notice before a download takes place with CLEAR instructions to have more than the 6GB they indicate ofr the Mountain Lion download

  • Mountain Lion download problems with Lion 10.7.5 (no VirusBarrier issue)

I have a mid-2009 Macbook Pro. From the factory it came with Snow Leopard but has since been upgraded to Lion OS X 10.7.5. I do not have VirusBarrier, I am writing from a recently clean-installed Lion.
I have now been troubleshooting my Mac for several days. When I wrote first, I had an issue with Safari having been damaged and so I wasn't able to reinstall Lion - but after a certain extremely helpful community member I finally succeeded in installing Lion.
But the issues with the App Store still persist. All my Mountain Lion downloads fail, getting the error message "can't verify, might be corrupted" what many here have also been getting. However, most solutions were related to VirusBarrier (which I don't have), or /var/folders errors (Console does not show any var-related errors).
So if it's not a var-related issue, or related to firewalls or virus softwares (I have disabled the Firewall and I have no virus software installed), what could it be?
When the download and install of ML failed last time, Console showed the following messages:
    11/30/12 11:54:44.617 AM com.apple.SecurityServer: Failed to authorize right 'system.install.app-store-software' by client '/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/PackageKit.framework/Versions/A/Resources/in stalld' [235] for authorization created by '/System/Library/CoreServices/Software Update.app' [567]

...and a bit later, upon re-starting the download:

    Problem elimination:
    * I don't think this is a router-related issue: I have downloaded and installed other softwares outside App Store successfully
    * As said, I don't think this has anything to do with Firewall or Virus settings
    * Nor has this anything to do with /var/folders as far as I can tell
    What I've tried so far:
    * Repaired disk permissions several times
    * Rebooted
    * Restarted App Store
    * Following one advise found on the net, I deleted preflight.pfpkg just in case
    * All the time I have made sure my OS has the most recent Software Updates installed (most of them downloaded successfully, while with Safari and OS 10.7.5. I had to try several times before they were downloaded succesfully)
I just reinstalled my OS X Lion, only to use it to jump on to Mountain Lion - so I am pending my migration until ML is installed. I would like to fix this soon, since I'd like to get the migration done and my real work started. I would really appreciate your help.
I'm not very adept at using Console or Terminal to troubleshoot, so if someone could guide me through the problem identification, that would be great. Unless someone already knows exactly what's going wrong and can show me a working solution - that'd save my day!
    Thanks!

In cases like this, if you have an Apple store near by, they will most likely install the OS free of charge for you, if you can't bring your Apple ID along to prove you've paid for it.
Would that work out for you?

  • Mountain Lion and Time Machine

Hi everyone. I own a Late 2008 Aluminum Macbook. I has Lion installed and up to date on it, and it runs like crap (slow boot ups, frequently long loads, random hangs). I feel it does because I upgraded Leopard to Snow Leopard, and then upgraded to Lion. So I figured, I would do a clean install of ML to get myself a fresh start. MY questions are as follows.
    1. Should I in fact go to ML or would a fresh install of Lion be better for performance?
    2. Since I have 4 years of stuff on this computer, id like to keep my apps and settings, If I do a Lion Time Machine backup, can I then load my apps and settings to ML after I do a clean install?
    3. How will this process affect my Boot Camp install of Windows 7?
    4. Could I upgrade, then do a Time Machine Backup, dro a fresh install, and then import the backup?
Thanks for the help everyone! I'm pretty new to this fresh install business but I think im hoping to make this thing work better.

    1. I would not upgrade until you resolve whatever problems exist with your Lion installation.
    2. Upgrading OS X generally always retains settings, does not affect third-party applications, and does not affect your data and files.
    3. If there are no problems with your hard drive and you have a Recovery HD partition in place then your Boot Camp partition should be unaffected.
    4. You can always use a Time Machine backup to migrate your files to a newly installed OS X system. This is usually done via the Setup Assistant or the Migration Assistant.
    My suggestion is:
How to Install Lion/Mountain Lion Successfully - You must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6-10.6.8 or Lion instaalled
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.3.) if DW cannot fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall Snow Leopard.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the backup volume. Source means the internal startup volume.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade to Lion/Mountain Lion:
Purchase the Lion/Mountain Lion Installer from the Mac App Store. The download should start quickly. Lion is nearly 4 GBs so a fast internet connection is essential. Download time could run upwards of 4 hours depending upon network conditions and server demands at the time.
The installer will run automatically after the download is completed. Click on the Install button to begin the upgrade.
    Follow instructions for installation.
I suggest that after the Mountain Lion installer downloads and launches that you Quit the installer. Make a copy of the Mountain Lion installer and put it in the Downloads folder for safe keeping. Then do this:
    Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
Alternatively, download Lion DiskMaker and follow the instructions for making a bootable Mountain Lion flash drive installer.

  • After Mountain Lion download, FaceTime is not working anymore. Any ideas?

After Mountain Lion download, FaceTime is not working anymore. Any ideas?

I have reinstalled mountain Lion again . This time, Facetime works when somebody calls me, and I can do calls from my Mac again. But the problem was still that I was not able to call my iPad, what I was able to do with Lion (I had one Apple-ID and two call adresses). The solution was this time to generate a second Apple-ID from the Facetime in my Mac (this doesn't affect your main Apple-ID, it's only used for Facetime). Now, it works!  ;-)

  • Mountain Lion download getting stuck at 79MB w/ no internet connectivity issues

I just purchased Mountain Lion via the App Store but everytime I try to download it, the download gets stuck around 79.4MB and the download time just gets longer and longer without the download actually pausing. Pausing and resuming have the same problem, the file size just goes up to 80+MB before dropping back down to 79.4MB again. I have tried canceling, reopening the App store and re-downloading several times already without success. Please help! I went through Mountain Lion download problems in the forum but I can't find a solution. I'm downloading onto an iMac on a broadband Wifi personal home network and can surf the internet without problems and as quickly as usual. For reference, my connectivity speed at this time is usually enough to download a 300MB file in 15 mins to half an hour.

  • Mountain lion download is very slow and in-between it hangs of and starts from beginning. Is there a solution i have already purchased it can i download a torrent and authorize it

Mountain lion download is very slow and in-between it hangs of and starts from beginning. Is there a solution I have already purchased it can I download a torrent and authorize it. Somebody pl. Help

Exactly. Some of us don't understand the situation in India. This is a country with sickest internet speeds. The internet segment is dominated by fraudulant companies. There is no consistency that is why most of the data transfer here is through Pen drives and torrent websites. We have never seen a good downlooad speed here. And on the top of inconsistency lies the Mac book Air without a built in RJ45 port.
If i have to do it in an internet cafe it will cost me more time and money than to purchase a Mac book air itself. Apple should start giving us software loaded flash drives at least at premium.

  • After installing Mountain Lion, my Time Machine won't back up ... says the sparsebundle is in use

After installing Mountain Lion, my Time Machine won't back up ... says the sparsebundle is in use

Standard problem in ML.. apple do not seem to want to recognise.
Reboot the TC .. if that fails restart the whole network in correct order.. modem.. router/TC... clients.. with 2min gap.
There are other suggestions like changing the password.. all they do is the same as reboot.
Read C12.. most quoted Q in pondini website history. This is asked 10 times a day.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
Here is another way to get a useful utility in ML.. rather than toyland version.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • Mountain Lion download fails

My Macbook Air is on version 10.7.5 and I have 2GB of space. I have tried downloading Mountain Lion 3 times now, and it says that it failed every time. Why is this happening? How can I download Mountain Lion? Do I not have enough space?

You have way too little space.  It's strongly recommended that a minimum of 10 GB free space be maintained for optimal system and application performance.  The full Lion install package is 3.77 GB in size.  You'll need to off load enough files to get to the 10 GB free space and then try again.
If you continue adding files to your MBA and get down in the MB range it can come to a standstill, lockup and/or refuse to boot.  Not a place where you want to be.

  • How can I downgrade my Os x Maverick to Os x mountain lion without time machine

downgrade os x maverick to os x mountain lion without time machine back up and disc

To downgrade you have to have a copy of the Mountain Lion installer, download from the Mac App Store but be sure to go to System Preferences > App Store first and uncheck boxes that will automatically install the download.
You will have to erase the hard drive and then install from a saved copy of the installer, saved to a flash drive for instance.
This is going to be a time consuming exercise, so is there a specific reason for wanting to downgrade?

  • Need a Mountain Lion download link!

Had to start from original install disks on mid 2009 MBP when Mavericks upgrade failed miserably. Reinstalled up to Snow Leopard. My previous ML purchase was nowhere to be found (not in App Store). Spent $20 to repurchase and now Apple is sending it to my shipping address in a few days? I need a Mountain Lion download link! Time machine is formatted to ML. I'm overseas and spent a whole day downloading Mavericks - afraid to do that again. I'll stick with ML if I can just download it again.

  • HT203421 Mountain Lion download has messed up my calendar. One calendar is missing on my MAc but not on my ipad or iPhone

Mountain Lion download has messed up my calendar. One calendar is missing on my Mac but not on my ipad or iPhone

OKAY FOLKS, I found the answer.  I figured the only explination could be with my iCloud Account.  I tried EVERYTHING, read every discussion on this topic.  It WASN'T b/c I had an old Mobile Me account.  It WASN'T b/c I didn't have the sttings right.  I rebooted, erased data, EVERYTHING.  The only solution was to create a NEW iCloud account - I chose a new address through Apple (me.com).  Even though I already have a me.com email address and a different Apple ID I figured starting fresh was the only way.  Sadly, I lost all of my calendar data (when I tried to import my old calendar data from a backup it was associated with the old iCloud account and could not be edited) but my contacts were saved.  I just re-entered my calendar information... figured this would be less time consuming than trying to reboot and research the issue 10 more hours!
Here are the steps I used:
1- iCloud was OFF on my iPhone to start
2- Export your iCal and iContacts data from your Mac to a backup (you WILL lose your data)
3- On iPhone went to Settings, iCloud and went through the proper steps to set up a new iCloud account with a NEW email address (me.com)
4- On iMac under System Preferences I deleted my OLD iCloud account (it will prompt you stating you will lose your data or you can merge/save).  The only way I could get it to work was to accept the warning it was going to delete everything
5- Set up a NEW iCloud account on my Mac with the NEW me.com account I set up on my iPhone.  Somehow my Contacts were kept in tact, uploaded to iCloud and to my iPhone.  Had issues with my iCal data, but I entered all the information manually.
Everything is syncing great!  Haven't set this up yet on my iPad but will do that next.  I'm hopeful!!

  • How many machines can I install on with one Mountain Lion download?

I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but I have both an iMac and a MacBook Pro.  Do I have to buy two Mountain Lion downloads - one for each, or can I somehow download twice after paying once?
    Judy

Actually, having made the same claim a couple of days ago and being proven completely wrong, I have a certain responsibility to correct you by mentioning that there is no limit to how many machines ML can be installed on, as long as you own or control those machines.
    See section 2B(i): http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/OSX108.pdf
