OS X Panther and TechTool Pro

Can an earlier version of TechTool Pro be used to diagnose and fix issues with a drive with Panther 10.3.9 installed?
I have tried to install TechTool pro version 4.1.1 for Panther on my beige G3 and it will not launch. It "unexpectedly quits".
Also, I have a second drive that won't boot a cloned copy of OS X Panther and I can't use this drive to boot from and use same version of TechTool on that drive to diagnose the primary boot drive.
The idea was to have 2 versions of OS X Panther to be able to fix issues with both internal drives when needed. Can't seem to be able to do this.
The TTP 4 CD won't boot from the beige's internal CD drive, either. I have an additional CD drive connected via a PCI FW card, but I beleive that the beige Macs are not bootable through FW. So, that won't work.
I have an older version 3.X of TTP that does boot from CD and can be used from OS 9 to diagnose an OS X system. I used to use this version to fix issues with OS X 10.2.8 Jaguar. Since I appear to have some limitations, is it advisable to use an older disk repair app to fix a newer OS X system?
I realize that it might not "fix" everything but will it fix what it'll recognized and not do any additional file damage to a newer system?
Bad idea?
I am kinda stuck as I have a perfectly good working version of OS X Panther running on this Mac, but with no way to do any disk maintenance or repairs with the Panther version of TTP.
Any Suggestions?

Boot to OS 9.
Run XpostFacto.
Insert the Panther Install CD.
Boot to the CD (and claim you will install on the cloned drive) -- this will get you running off the Install CD, but do not install. Instead, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu as your first action.
Use Disk Utility to Repair the cloned disk. Run again until it comes clean or gets stuck. Then Repair Permissions once.
Quit Disk Utility and set Startup to OS 9 and Restart.
Run XpostFacto.
Select the cloned drive and choose to boot to it.
If no success, go back to OS 9 and run XPostFacto again. Select the cloned drive. Uninstall everything. Re-install everything (it takes a while this time) choose to boot to that drive.

  • SMART: DiskWarrior disagrees with Apple's Disk Utility and TechTool Pro

DiskWarrior 4 is giving me SMART status warnings for my internal drive, specifically that the temperature is too hot, and may indicate an impending failure. This typically happens when my drive is rather busy, like doing a long backup.
However, both Apple's Disk Utility and TechTool Pro 5 say the drive is fine; Disk Utility says the "S.M.A.R.T. status: verified" and TTP does it's check of the SMART status, with result "Passed."
    Who do I believe?
    Thanks.

That is hot, it sounds like you have a cooling problem!
Most drive manufactures only recommend an operating temperature of 140 F (60 C), here are the Spec's for the 320 GB WD Caviar Blue that I installed in my Early Core Duo just a few months ago as an example: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=299

  • APP and TechTools Pro

I recently purchased AppleCare Protection Plans for my new Mid-2011 iMac and my Mid-2010 MBP. I received the documentation, but neither came with the TechTools Pro CD. Has that been discontinued?

    Go to your iPad.
    Tap Settings
    Tap iTunes & App Store
    Under "AUTOMATIC DOWNLOADS"
Slide the Apps slider to on so it is green
Go back to settings and then press your home button.
Now whenever you download an app using your Apple ID it will appear on your iPad. You can even buy apps from a PC as long as you are using the same Apple ID.

  • IMac i7 and TechTool Pro

I have TechTool Pro 4.5.1 on my iMac i7 (late 2009). I need to update to 4.5.2 or 4.5.3 in order to use TechTool Pro but Micromat says that I cannot bootup on the latest update because they still need Apple's start up files for the iMac i7. What are my options? Also, I have TechTool Deluxe 3.1.3 DVD but cannot get it to boot up.
    Thanks for helping.

I do not own TT Pro, but checked their website and it seems that 5.07 is indeed for Snow Leopard:

You said you got the DW updated - I would simply install that on your internal and then create a bootable clone on an external drive (or, if you have a recent clone, just install it on your external). In any case, it is much easier to restart from your external and then run DW from there on your internal than actually booting from DW. And the result is the same: you do not have to be booted from DW, you just need to be booted from a drive other than the one you want it to work on.
Since I don't have TT Pro, I can't speak for that process, but can't see why it should work the same way (install on a bootable clone and run it from there).
Which brings up the question: you do have a bootable clone?? If not, you should have some sort of backup before running either of those apps just in case.

I have IMac OSX 10.9.4, 4GB,Processor 3.06 with Intell2Duo. I would like to check for Malware. I run a TechTool Pro 6 every month and that comes up great.
When check how much memory I am using, with only Safari open I am using 3.9 and more of her 4.0 memory. She is very. very slow in processing. I had 4000
trash to clean out and it took her over an hour to expel. Also for some reason Safari will not allow me to click on a link, in my G-mail, and let it go to the page.
It has a sign saying a pop-up blocker is on and will not let me do it. I must open the stamp to look at my e-mails and if I have redirected link now I can do it.
I have not changed my preferences so where is this pop-up blocker?
I have looked at preferences on Safari and Google, which I do not understand Google, and do not see where this blocker could be.
Malware is something I want to make sure is not on my computer. Tech Tool Pro 6 is all I know of and it does not detect Malware.
    Help.

  • Techtool Deluxe and MacBook Pro

I see this message on the Apple Techtool download site:
Note: The Mac Pro (Early 2008), MacBook (Early 2008) and MacBook Pro (Early 2008) are not fully compatible with this version of TechTool Deluxe. The MacBook Air is fully compatible with this version of TechTool Deluxe when used with the MacBook Air SuperDrive. Please check back later for a new version of TechTool Deluxe.
Since it is not listed what exactly this means, is it still safe to use??
    Message was edited by: powerbook1701

There is always an extended delay in the updating of TechTools Deluxe for new Macs, powerbook1701. If you have a Mac that it is not shown as compatible DO NOT use TTD on it. In the past this has caused some serious problems. Out of date disk utilities generally can do a lot of harm to directory structures and the like.
You should NEVER use an old version of TTD or TTP or DiskWarrior, or Drive Genius, or even Apple's own Disk Utility, on a new computer unless the manufacturer specifically endorses it for your model and OS version
(An "Early MBP17", like the one that jw2 says he has, is a very different computer to yours. The fact that he has used it with no problems is not relevant to your situation.)

  • How good is Techtool Pro to use and maintain my Mac?

I am considering a package to help diagnose problems as well as keep my Mac in top shape. In general Is Techtool Pro a good solution to this? Thanks for any advice you can give me.

I have had the file recovery feature come in handy on occasion as well as the hardware testing features which I have used often. The ability to create a separate partition from which you can boot the system and run the tools should you have a problem with your primary drive partition can be a life-saver. For all of these functions there are other tools available, but to have them all on one package is handy (and less expensive). In addition, there are times when one tool can't repair a particular problem but another one can.
You can read up on the full features of TechTool, if you're not already familiar with it, here:

  • Diskwarrior or Techtools Pro? Dock/Memory problem

This is actually about three questions in one - apologies. But they seem related. So: I've been having problems with my dock freezing on startup. I've serached these threads, but my dock freeze refuses to be cured by any solutions suggested elsewhere. Similar cause though - the problem began when I upgraded to Tiger from Panther - I'm running 10.4.3.
I've run disk utility, repaired permissions, run Cocktail and all have reported that whatever minor hard drive errors they've found have been repaired.
I've been told that I should invest in a third party disk utility and repair system - Diskwarrior or Techtools Pro 4. But which one? Techtools sounds a bit like the old Nortons Utilities - which I gave up on when I bought this G5 as everyone I spoke to said it was a bad idea to run it.
Finally, as my Dock freezing problem persisted, I ran a hardware test to see if there was anything wrong with anything else. 'Mass storage' passed, 'Logic board' passed, but it seems I have a 'memory error detected'. Do I have dodgy RAM and if so, should I replace it? Is this the cause of my dock problems?
Any advice as to how I should proceed gratefully accepted.

I backed up all my really important data onto DVDs and a few other bits onto my iPod. But I see the wisdom of what you say about an external hard drive not being affected by a sudden power failure - I'll purchase one. Good advice, thank you.
I'm wondering if the dock problem is not something completely separate; perhaps to do with a recent upgrade to Tiger from Panther (although I was careful to follow all the recommended routes for doing this).
Meantime, I'll try removing the offending memory board later today when I have a minute and see what happens. I'll keep you posted!

  • My external HD won't mount anymore on Mac OS, Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro, but appears as "media" on Disk Utility. What do I do?

I have this 1 TB Caviar Black drive from WD, I've installed it on an external HD case and have been using to store large files like HD movies and old archive things. Its file system is Mac OS Journaled.
Last year, all of a sudden, it gave me the following error while trying to plug it in: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"
I was mad and left it for dead while looking for a way to fix it.
Then, again all of a sudden, it started working again, flawlessly and without any problems.
It worked well for at least 5 more months and then BAM... same error again!
I've tried DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, Disk Utility and nothing... The disk won't show up on any of these apps, except on Disk Utility as a "Media" drive with 0 bytes used and unformatted partition.
    What do I do?
Could it be the external HD case?

It could be a problem with enclosure, but it also could be a problem with the drive itself or the drive is possibly corrupted. I would start by contacting WD tech support.
It may be possible to recover files from the drive using file recovery software:
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
Otherwise, unless the drive fixes itself like before you should try repartitioning and reformatting to determine if the drive has failed or is now working properly.

  • TechTool Pro finds a corrupted file

The latest version of TechTool Pro (v. 4.0.6) found a problem with a file and displayed the following message: "Type List Offset is invalid: Prop-Object.bmp." (Spotlight doesn't locate this file.) The file is probably an image according to Apple Care, but because Apple's Disk Utility gives the computer a clean bill of health, Apple Care says I needn't worry about it, and I don't. However the error/warning message is a minor annoyance whenever I run TechTool Pro. Has anyone on this forum had the same result with TechTool Pro? What is this image/file? Where is it? Can it be safely removed and/or rebuilt? Any information will be appreciated. I am using Tiger (v. 10.4.3) without any problems.
    Any information will be appreciated.
    Simm

    Hi, Simmm —
I don't know the answer to your question. But, since it's otherwise gathering moss at the moment . . .
. . . I'll climb way out on the limb with a crazy thought from left field:
Though .bim is decidedly a graphics file suffix, the rest of the message sounds suspiciously like resource fork lingo . . .
Now — would someone who understands this ~better than I please try to rescue me (I mean Sam), please? (Or, I suppose, saw off the limb.)
Either way, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if this were — at "best" — an invisible file. If so, it's quite possibly something you don't want to mess with.
How thoughtful of TTPro 4.0.6 to leave you hanging like this. Have you considered posting a query to Micromat support?
Wish I could be of more help.
    Regards,
    Dean

  • Using techtool pro found problem with "volume structure".  What to do?

Using techtool pro found problem with "volume structure" and this was not fixed by TECHTOOL PRO.  What do you suggest I do?

I would boot from my gray install disk (put the disk in the drive and restart holding down the C key). Then choose Utilities and run Disk Utility and click Repair Disk. As always, be sure you have a back up of your data first.

  • Volume rebuild using TechTool Pro 5 - How long??

We put the OS X 10.5 install dvd in our Macbook with the intent to edit the administrator password and instead triggered what our Macbook thought was some kind of upgrade. We were afraid to cancel it, but about a minute in the "upgrade" ended up failing. We lost our ability to boot to the desktop and so we took it in to the Apple Store where they advised us that the node structure became invalid. They told us to either get Diskwarrior or TechTool Pro. We opted for the latter.
We've been doing a volume rebuild now for the last 27 hours. Is this normal?? We did not have an external drive, but there's no indication that this is required. In further searching, we noticed that it's recommended to have one, but we don't. The program has been sitting at "repairing directory structure" and occasionally the dvd drive spins. There's no progress bar, so we don't know what is going on. Does anyone have experience with this who can shed some light on what's going on??
    Thanks!

  • TechTool Pro – can't create an eDrive

After selecting Source Volume for eDrive and Mac OSX the Create eDrive button remains grey. I'm using TTP version 4.5.1

According to TechTool Help that's bundled with the software:
+The eDrive contains your basic Mac OS X system as well as a copy of TechTool Pro. If you ever have trouble with your normal startup volume, you can simply restart your computer from the eDrive. This will give you immediate access to the tools you need for recovery and repair. It eliminates the need for a bootable CD-ROM/DVD or ancillary hard drive for system volume repair or maintenance. This may be particularly attractive for use on a portable computer. With an eDrive installed you will not need to carry a repair CD/DVD with you on the road.+
I took that to mean you can create an eDrive on the built-in drive.
