Os x panther

Hello,
Recently I bought an ibook g4 and installed Os x panther on it, to get rid of the previous owner's old files and stuff. I have a few questions.
1. Can it run Microsoft office if so what year(s)?
2. It can't update itunes, its at a really old version of itunes and when I go into itunes it says theres a new version of itunes available for download. So i press update and then it cant find anyway software updates, is it just os x panther because when it used to run os x 10.5.8 leopard it was able to update it. Also if i got Tiger would it update?
3. What would you recomend i get Tiger or Leopard. I dont care which i just want my laptop to be able to use word, and update itunes so I can use it. Also if both would work for those things than I would like the cheaper 1 which is Tiger.

Without knowing the actual model you have your questions are not fully answerable.
You may be able to run Office 2004 or earlier as they would be the PPC versions. However, I don't know where you could get it as they are all obsolete.
I can't tell you what you can upgrade OS X to because some models can run only Panther while others can run Tiger and/or Leopard. We need to know your exact model identifier which you can find by opening system profiler in the Utilities folder. The ID is displayed on the right.

IMac G3 Panther, Why do I have three hard drives on my desk top and how do I combine them into one?

Trying to get an old iMac up to be enough for my four year old to go on the internet. Upgraded to panther and put an airport card in. Now problems;
1. It can connect to my airport express, but not if I have the password enabled, then it won't, even if I put the password in.
2. There are 3 hard drives showing on the desk top, with the space divided between them.
3. I've been trying to download an old version of flash, but it never finishes and says it can't write the file or something like that. I kind of think it has to do with the file being to large and since the hard drive is divided, it won't fit.

Your old iMac can only connect to a WEP network, and yours is probably WPA. As far as the partitions are concerned, if you don't need any any of the data on it, use your Panther disc and erase and fomat it as one partition.

Panther to Leopard or Tiger for G5 Imac

Hello,
I am in the process of trying to back up my computer. I bought an external drive that has software that is compatible with OS X10.4.8+. I have panther which is X10.3.x and cannot use the software to back up my data. If I do not upgrade my operating system what is the best plan and how do I back up the data I have on my computer? I am considering upgrading to Tiger because it was the last operating system designed just for the G5 chip. Leopard scares me because I have not read anything about it that is positive with an older non Intel chip imac. Anyone have good experiences with Leopard and their G5 imac? Time machine on Leopard is interesting to me and would be the main reason to update but if the whole operating system does not work well with the G5 imac then I have not improved my computer.

Use SuperDuper! to make an exact bootable clone of your system to your external firewire drive. That way, if anything goes wrong, and it shouldn't, you will have everything saved.
A hint, when you have installed Leopard, use the [10.5.6 combo updater|http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1056co mboupdate.html] to get yourself up-to-date.

Photoshop CS2 upgrade Panther to Tiger - Help please!

Hi All,
I am doing a favour for my Aunt tomorrow and upgrading her G5 from Panther to Tiger.
She uses it mainly for Photoshop.
Is there anything i need to be wary of? I looked at the adobe web site and it seems to work on both systems, but do i need to download an update?
Any advice, greatfully received!

hello
my ibook has been erratic recently.
and now iTunes, activity monitor, grab, installer, disk utility... etc.
do not launch (cannot open app because xxx is damaged or incomplete).
i've tried fixing permissions, prebinding, emptying cache.
i've copied installer and disk utility from installation disk, so now they work.
i've tried to restore software using the cd, but when it comes to selecting the hard drive,
it's got a red ! and says: (null)
i've tried to start computer from installation cd, however i can't seem to get past grey apple.
(i'm guessing maybe some broken system files restricting it from working,
as i can read the disk properly when i've booted from internal)
as a last resort, i've backed everything up to firewire external (bootable).
i plan to: boot via external
wipe clean internal to extended journaled
put installation disk in computer
shutdown and remove internal
start computer via pressing c
install system files
is this feasible??

My understanding of what you are trying to do is to:
1. Reformat and erase internal HDD.
2. Reinstall from install disk.
3. Restore from backup.
If I am correct, here is how you might proceed:
Formatting, Partitioning Zeroing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
Select language
Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note: One partition is normally preferable for an internal HDD.)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
Select Erase tab
Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
Optional: Select on Security Options button (Tiger) Options button (Panther & earlier).
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
Click OK.
Click Erase button
Quit Disk Utility.
Open installer and begin installation process.
Installation Process
Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Optional: Check box to install X11 (Tiger) BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
Proceed with installation.
After installation computer will restart for setup.
After setup, reboot computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Connect to Internet.
Download and install 10.3.9 Combo Update.
Computer will restart after updates.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.

Upgrade an iMac G3 to Panther or Tiger?

Hello -
I'm upgrading my parents iMac DV G3/400 (firewire, DVD drive). I have ordered 512MB memory stick to augment the iMac's original 64MB.
I'm going to install OS X, but I'm not sure if Tiger or Panther will be a better choice. I have access to a license for both systems, and I just want to make the right choice so that the computer will be as easy to use as possible.
Do you feel I'd be better off running Tiger or Panther on this machine?
Also, do you think 576MB of RAM is sufficient to run OS X Tiger or Panther on this iMac?

I have been running Panther on my iMac G3 400mHz 384 mb since Nov. 2003 and have been quite happy with the performance. It is able to run iPhoto 2 and Photoshop Elements 2.0 very well although they are a bit slow. I won't likely upgrade the OS any further on this machine as it would not be cost effective and the performance would suffer. This is still a capable workhorse for us for mainly WP, Quicken, web surfing etc.
I am just getting into digital photography and was amazed that it immediately recognized my camera in iPhoto when I connected it. I didn't even have to load the software that came with the camera. My advice is the same as the others, go for Panther.

Wont let me install tiger on panther on the hard drive

I recently obtained a 14" 800mhz ibook g3 with 256 mb of ram from a friend. The reason that they gave it to me in the first place becuase the hard drive crashed and they never bothered fix it. When I got I turned it on, the drive spun up then the computer shut down. I inserted a tiger install cd from my imac g5 and booted from the disk. When the installer ran it told me that tiger could not be installed on this disk. I went to disk utility and tried to repair the disk and it failed every time, erased it, partitioned it, tried everything. I finally convinced my self that the hd was shot. So I went out and bought a 60gb notebook hard drive and installed it myself. Once installed I booted from the tiger cd and ran the installer. It told me that the software was not able to be installed on this computer. I dont know why is said that it the computer seems to meet the specs of tiger. Well I also tried to install panther, when I ran the installer and got to the drive selection screen there was my new hard drive but there was a red stop sign with an exclimation mark on the bottom right and corner of the drive icon. Becuase of this it would not let me continue. I ran disk utility and repaired and everything. I am stumped. Please help me. I am also not sure what version of osx is on there because the owner does not know.

Edit... Today I when ibook beeped three times when I started it up. After reading some of the apple docs, I learning how thought that it had something do to with the ram. I took it out and then placed it back in. Ran the installer and panther is currently installing!

Are you sure you have the hard drive set as master? There are jumper settings for the hard drive that may not be set correctly.

How do I totally remove the 'ghost' of mountain lion from my ibook G4? I erased and restored to panther then Snow Leopard but ML still causing problems

I am not very tech savvy but work from home and have used Macs for about 18 years, so know the basics. Have had iBook G4 for almost 5 years, it came with Panther Discs and later added Snow Leopard. Never had even the slightest issue until about 2 months ago. Kept getting "browser no longer supported" on websites and eventually could no longer edit my own Jimdo website or publish on YUDU, so downloaded Mountain Lion and installed it on my iBook.
Straight away it was much slower to start up, wasn't that keen generally, but used it for 6 weeks hoping I would get used to it. At that point my older Mac Mini (also running on Snow Leopard) died and as I wanted to continue using my printer and scanner (neither had drivers to work with Mountain Lion) I went to Time machine and restored my iBook to the day before I installed Mountain Lion.
iBook was better immediately and started faster again, everything fine for about 3 weeks and then last wednesday my iBook would not come back on. The grey start up window showed the apple and whirly wheel for between 5 to 10 minutes, then just a blank blue screen. I could move the cursor but that was it. Tried to start up again many times, eventually the grey apple was taking up to 15 minutes before the blue screen. Refused to go beyond that blank blue screen when holding down C and starting up from either Panther or Snow Leopard discs or from Disk warrior disc. Disc Warrior and Utilities said nothing was wrong with the hard drive but always showed the HD icon with a yellow exclamation sign over it.
Because of work pressure, after 48 hours with no improvement, I wound up buying a new iMac, so can work but still would love to have my iBook back, plus use of my Printer and scanner again. Last night finally managed to Panther reinstalled after erasing 4 times and many failed attempts at install. Everything seemingly fine but Snow Leopard first reinstall failed so erased once more. Second time SL installed but gave a warning in red saying something to the effect that as I am installing an older OS over a newer one, there will be issues. This leads me to believe that somehow, despite Time Machines and now 5 separate Hard Drive erasures through utilities, Mountain Lion is STILL on there? How on earth can I get rid of it and return just to Snow leopard. Any help really welcomed as I am at the end of my tether but don't want to give up on my old faithful (until now) iBook

First, that cannot be an iBook G4 as that machine cannot run Snow Leopard let alone Mountain Lion. To run Snow Leopard it has to be an Intel processor, not a G4. What does it show as the Model Identifier in About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Model Identifier?
Second, if you have erased the hard drive there should not be remnants of any prior content. Even though Disk Warrior is saying nothing is wrong with the hard drive, it sounds as though there are problems. You may want to consider simply replacing the hard drive so there are no questions about faults. A good source is OWC, http://www.macsales.com where they also have on-line videos showing how to do the replacement.
Third, you could also try again to restart using the Snow Leopard DVD/CD and use Disk Utility on that install disk to erase again, and do it a couple times, then try to install. If it continues to refuse, then it sounds as though there is a fault with the hard drive.

HT1444 Have Mac OS v. 10.5.8 and Need i tunes for new iPad. My i tunes says I need quick time 7.5.5. I've searched but don't find it for my Mac which is Panther. Any help will be appreciated.

Can't copy file with # in name to Panther server

I have this problem with any file that has a "#" in its name, which is fairly common on Mac OS X , I think (the result of certain programs truncating the name)
For example, from a computer running Panther, I can copy the file "list all movies in path copy#12345.app" up to any share on the server.
From a computer running Tiger, I can copy the same file up to any share except one that's named "Backup2". When I try to copy up to that, I get the message "The operation is not permitted because you do not have sufficient priveleges for some of the items". I've checked and re-checked, all the permissions are fine.
It's almost like "Backup2" is acting like a a samba share and restricting the name. "Backup2" has exactly the same settings as the other shares, but it's the only share with a number in it's name.
The Tiger clients are running 10.4.3, the server is a G5 xserve running 10.3.9 server, with an xraid. The shares are on the xraid.
Any thoughts on why this would happen?

Apple "support" has so far done nothing to help me resolve this, after telling me that they were escalating it to a higher level of support.
My theory is this: One of my XRAID controllers died. When Apple's on-site service came to replace it, they didn't properly seat the new one, which resulted in my losing the right hand array. After reseating it, I had to re-initialize the right hand (lower controller) array and restore my data. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that the replacement controller had an older firmware rev. I upated it later, but my belief is that I will need to re-initialize it for this problem to go away. I haven't been able to do that yet, because it will take me around 3 days to restore 1.3 TB of data.

IPhoto problem after upgrading to Leopard from Panther

I successfully (more or less) upgraded my 867 MHz G4 to Leopard from Panther earlier in the week. Now I find that every time I try to open iPhoto I get the message 'The application iPhoto quit unexpectedly.'
I have repaired permissions, restarted the computer and run Software Update- all to no avail. Any suggestions from anyone?

Leopard and panther open directory server hate each other

So I got Leopard the first day but didn't install it till a week later 'coz I was working on a Final Cut project. When I was ready to install I saw all these problems people are having and decided to backup all my user files before I do it which I've never done before (what can you say, I trust Apple engineers!) Anyway, after an upgrade install I found that my PowerMac Dual 2.7GHz G5 with 3.5GB of RAM was slow, very slow, crawling slow. Every button I pressed, every app I tried to open, every response seemed it'd take at least 5 mins and Activity Monitor showed that those apps I was trying to interact with were not responding but if I was patient enough to wait, most of them would eventually come around.
After a whole night searching the Apple forum and googling, I couldn't find any solution. So I decided to wipe the hard disk clean and do a clean installation. Amazingly everything worked just as they should and installation only took like 15 mins or so. After I finished installing all my usual apps back into my PowerMac I was, again, busy working on another Final Cut project. And finally that project was concluded so I can look at my new Leopard installation and see if I've missed anything after the clean installation. I found out that I forgot to add my office LDAP server information into the Directory Access and I went ahead and added it.
I was distracted by something else after I added the LDAP info and an hour or so later when I restart my PowerMac, it started to act weird and crawling slow again, just like when I first did the upgrade installation. I totally forgot what I did to make it slow and I was super worry. After like 2 hours of ghost hunting in my PowerMac, I decided to let it sleep for the night and try to figure it out in the morning. On my way home I finally remembered what I did to make it slow! It's the LDAP info!!!! That's the only system related thing I added since before I did the last Final Cut project.
I searched the Apple forum again last night to see if anyone has the same or related problem but I couldn't find anything close. I came to work this morning and decided to test my finding. The PowerMac was still super slow and I figured if it's directory access related, then if I unplug the network cable, my Mac should be smart enough to understand that there is no point in searching for a directory and simply gives up. I unplug the cable and my Mac is up and running smoothly again. I opened the Directory Access app and delete the LDAP entry, restart the Mac, plug the network cable back in and everything is fine now!
I believe the problem is more on my Panther (10.3.9) server (ok fine! we are cheap, we didn't think a Tiger server was worth it! was I wrong!) than on the Leopard itself and that's why I couldn't find anything related on the forum. Is the Panther server LDAP module faulty to begin with that caused the problem? I don't know. I just know that Leopard does not play well with Panther's Open Directory service.

I've convinced myself that all the problems which I'm experiencing with failures to mount, disappearing CD/DVD drives are nothing to do with Windows XP because all my problems are occurring under Windows 2000 (on different computers). Looks like Apple have taken a leaf out of Microsoft's rule book (put the product out in the market before it's ready and let the punters do all the hard work finding and fixing the bugs).

Is there any way to set a stealth mode on the ports in Panther

The built-in firewall in Tiger provides a 'Stealth Mode' setting that makes the ports nonresponsive to external attempts to connect. The Panther firewall doesn't have this capability. Does anyone know of a way to enable this on a Panther machine (specifically 10.3.5 & 10.3.6) - even if it involves installing a utility application is ok.

What's a good way to search in Leopard when I'm used to Panther's CMD-F?

I need advice on how to search for files now that I'm using Leopard (instead of Panther) - it's beginning to wear my nerves thin. It was so incredibly easy to search under Panther but under Leopard I find it takes a lot more effort and gives inferior results. I've only had Leopard a few months and I must be missing something obvious.
In Panther I could type CMD-F and it would open up a separate window where I could put in my search criteria and it would search and present the results in a separate window, sorted in list view. It would let me by default, set up my search criteria, e.g. filename, and always search by file name in designated place(s).
In Panther if I wanted to search for an item in the active Finder window I could type in the search box in the upper right corner and after I found what I wanted I could click the x and it would go back to being the normal Finder window.
Not so in Leopard.
Now in Leopard, if I hit CMD-F it takes whatever window I was working in and turns it into some kind of search dialog. No thanks! If I wanted to search in that Window I would have.
The problem is that there is apparently no keyboard command to undo this unwanted behavior - I have to take my hands off the keyboard and use the trackpad to click the browser back arrow to get my window back, then I have to open a new window for this search dialog to operate in.
Next up in unwanted behavior, this search dialog never remembers that 100% of the time I am searching on the file name, and that I never ever ever want to search the "contents". So each time I do the search, I have to again take my hands off the keyboard and click "File Name", and then once again, I have to switch from icons to list view every single time since looking at an Icon with an abbreviated "File Name..." (without all the metadata about the file that one should be able to see in list view) is not as helpful as looking at the list view.
To make matters worse though, in list view, there's a totally useless column called "Last opened" and there doesn't seem to be any way to change these columns to something useful, such as last modified or created date.
What do I need to do to make my searches simple and efficient?

I have a clamshell last upgraded to Panther-I "lost" ,disk need reload

I have a graphite that I was about to put Tiger on. A pal tweaked it to accept my OSX10.4 already.
A bad break up included the X taking all my original install disks to various systems and programs...even mac (he is anti mac...so you can guess why he took them out of my cd file case).
As luck would have it , I had a serious system failure due to hi house temp (was in in AZ and my fusebox was out. The poor fish boiled. It was still 107 in the office when I came home).
It is physically recovered with the swollen battery replaced. I can get it running to a point but it needs to have an OS reinstalled.
Least has interactive screens instead of white screen of death or sad mac.
The problem...I had been up all night finishing teh sounbdtrack to a 60 minute animated feature in progress. Months of work...
not to mention children's photos. I save to an external once a day before bed. But I was out during the heat wave (having 2 broken teeth pulled- was a while)
How am I going to be able to install and archive? I have a disc with 10.1 that was part of my other ibook and it has the liscence to both machines written on the cover. But you have to archive with disk of last OS used to save the data in order to retrieve any salvageable data...right? Do I have to buy Panther all over again and not on sale (last disk was part of a 79 dollar upgrade)?!
I don't know many Macophiles personal to borrow the disc from long enough. The Mac store in Mesa AZ didnt even have a full disk for panther. They were able to look around with a boot copy, but not open any major files or mirror save the drive without a full OS.
I finally have the money to do so.... but I want to be sure before buying Panther new in the box. I know the data could be corrupted but if I can save half of it.....
that is months of work and of my children's lives.
A retrieval agency would have to install an os ... so I have just as much chance to get the data. Or at least get the data where a retrival team could reach it.

I'd ask the store in Mesa to copy the animation and your photos onto an external drive and then burn them to a CD for your safe keeping, as they seemed able to access your data when you were there last.
As secondhand Panther or Tiger OS's are expensive you could first try to boot in Safemode to see if that fixes any directory problems.
Starting up in Safe Mode
If heat has caused the problem then no software new or used is going fix failed hardware components so don't rush into new disks before you know your hardware is OK.
It would be better to first run the Apple Hardware test CD if you have it, to see if your disk and logic board are OK. Running the extended test is preferred.
If you don't have a copy, maybe the store has one they could loan you, or you could possible burn your own from this Apple download site, depending on your model.
Your early model clamshell graphite may fit the very first one for the iBook, but I am not sure which iBook you have exactly.

I am getting an error while trying to intall Panther

G4 lost it's HD so I decided to simply get a new one install it and take the bad one out. It turns out that the original HD had been replaced by a SCSI Cheetah drive that no longer worked. Easy enough took the SCSI HD out the SCSI controller card out and replaced the HD with an ATA drive with more capacity. Drive partitions normal, no problem, but when I try to install OS X 10.3.0 (Panther) on it, I keep getting an error. So I play around with the dip switches and change it from "Cable Select" mode to "Master", still get the error. So I take the dip switch out completely still get the error. What is going on? My take it maybe a bad RAM chip that is not allowing the install to proceed.

Did you update the G4's firmware to 4.2.8 (Boot ROM version in Apple System Profiler).

You need OS 9 to install the firmware. Before you upgrade the firmware, suggest you download/run DIMM First Aid - Check & recover disabled (missing) RAM from Apple's latest
