OS X Server 10.3: Can't enable printer sharing

We are trying to share a printer connected to a OS X Server, but there is no entry for "Printer Sharing" under System preferences > Sharing.
I thought perhaps it was because the printer service wasn't started. When I go to server admin and select print service and click starts ervice, nothing happens and nothing is entered in the log. Other services (e.g. FTP) start and stop fine.

I refer to 10.4 here but may be just as applicable to 10.3... Much of the vanilla OSX setups are still available in Server but Apple have just chosen not to make them available. You can access the vanilla settings by 'fooling' the server (on startup) into thinking it is juat a plain OSX System. I have done this successfully for USB printer sharing...
cd /System/Library/CoreServices
sudo mv ServerVersion.plist oldServerVersion.plist
Restart and you will be presented with the 'std' OS X login screen. USB printer sharing is now available. Configure this as required and then reinstate the oldServerVersion.plist and restart to return to server.
The shared usb printer will continue to function.
Needless to say, this is a bit of a 'hack' and I do not know if there are any side-effects. However, I have used it successfully myself and it runs fine even in conjunction with the server printer sharing.

Can't enable Internet Sharing on my phone

I have a Nokia Lumia 920 and every time I try to enable Internet Sharing I get the message: "internet sharing isn't currently available". I tried several things for a week now and I can't seem to find a solution. It's really frustrating.
Here's what I have done:
Took the SIM card off the phone and placed it on an Android phone. Enabled HotSpot and tested it with NO problems. This means my carrier supports tethering or sharing internet connections
Back on the Lumia 920 I tried lots of things, specially the trick explained in this forum, which is creating a new APN in the "access point" section, activating it, rebooting, and then re-activating the old APN. Didn't work.
I have also searched for an APN inside the CELLULAR section (in order to delete it), but I found only the Active network and no APNs over there
I have deleted all APNs inside the "access point" section, rebooted, and found the phone can still connect and navigate the internet even when there are NO APNs created at all! In this particular scenario I tried to enable Internet Sharing and nothing.
Please any hint or lead will be greatly appreciated. It's very frustrating.

McClausky, if your Wi-Fi is enabled and your are not in flight-mode: Please, give us the name of your network operator and that 7-letter code on the label on your phone (product-code). Perhaps it is the combination of both which creates this trouble. Are you connected to another Wi-Fi while starting the Internet sharing feature?

Cant join windows domain, cant enable printer sharing

I have been trying all day to add my new imac (leopard) to my office win2k3 server network.
I suspect the network cant find the printer connected to my iMac because the iMac is not truly logged on to the windows server. I can see all the computers connected to the network in finder just fine, so I know there is connectivity.
Does Mac OSX have a network login screen to join a work group?

Hi,
Could you please share the IP Address of the server ?
Make sure the server is set to Static IP Address. With one NIC card enabled. DNS IP should be pointing to the server IP itself.
On Client machine assign an IP address and make sure the DNS is set to Servers IP Address.
Once that is done , Try to ping the server.
Also ping connect from the client machine , Connect should show servers ip address.

Can't find printer shared on Windows machine

I don't know how to connect my MacBook Pro to a printer shared by a Windows machine on my network. I have the Windows path to the printer but I don't know how to get Leopard to see the printer. (I tried the Windows tab in the Print and Fax control panel.) Can someone please tell me what is going on?

Okay, some things you need to confirm for me.
What is the workgroup name of the computer sharing the printer?
What is the ip address and subnet mask of the computer sharing the printer?
What is your Mac's ip address and subnet mask?
If your Mac and the PC have the same subnet (usually the first three numbers of the ip address) and the workgroup name is the same, then you should be able to see the share. If not, there is a manual method of connecting to a Windows share.
What you need to do is customise the add printer browser. After selecting to add a printer, control-click next to the More Printers icon to see a menu. Choose Customize Toolbar. Move the Advanced icon to the toolbar. Now click the Advanced icon to see a new menu. Change the top menu to Windows Printing. In the field after smb://, you can enter the computer name or ip address of the sharing computer, followed by a / then the printer share name. For example,
smb://192.168.40.12/Canon
Note that sometimes you have to also use account information in the queue name, especially when the guest account is disabled. In these cases, the queue name would be entered as follows;
smb://username:password@computer_name/printer_sharename
Once you enter the queue name you can then select the printer model. For some models of printers, you cannot use the driver supplied by the vendor. So you have to look at using CUPS based drivers such as those provided by Gutenprint.

Can't Enable File Sharing for Guest Users on Time Capsule

Hey all,
My roommate has a time capsule that is capable of using a guest network, which my other roommate and I use to connect to the Internet. I have a Mac Mini, Mac Pro, iPhone, iPad, all of which cannot currently communicate with each other due to being on the "guest network."
I have seen instructions for enabling the "allow guest users to communicate with each other" option, but have loaded the roommate's Airport Utility and it does not have that option. He's running OS X 10.7 and has Airport Utility 6.1. There are options to configure the guest network, but nothing about enabling sharing between computers on the guest network.

AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion

Updated to 5.0.1 and now can't enable home sharing on 4S

I just updated the OS yesterday and now I'm unable to on turn home sharing on my 4S. It worked fine prior to the update. I've checked all the network settings. Works fine from my computer to my apple TV, just can get it to activate on my phone? Any suggestions?

Perhaps quit and relaunch iTunes. Also, I've noticed many times even on iOS 4 versions, that if you're playing music that is not from the iTunes or Remote App, you need to load the Music program firs and play something from that to get the Airplay icon to appear. Once it appears, it's available for all the other apps.

The HP Smart Web Printing compatible with Internet Explorer 6,7 and 8.
The HP Smart Print compatible with internet Explorer 6,7,8 and 9.
HP does not provide any web printing solution for firefox.

Enabling Wireless Sharing

On normal versions of OS X I can share my ethernet connection through my wifi card, but on OS X Server 10.4.9, the only thing under the sharing preference pane is "Services" and it seems like many of the other buttons are just missing. How can I enable wireless sharing on Mac OS X server?

You could try this trick to temporarily enable default OS X prefs...
In terminal...
cd /System/Library/CoreServices
sudo mv ServerVersion.plist oldServerVersion.plist
Restart and you will be presented with the 'std' OS X login screen.
Reinstate the oldServerVersion.plist and restart to return to server.
I've used this trick to share a USB printer off the server (not available in server prefs). Obviously the prefs panel disappears again once restarted as server but, in the case of USB printer sharing, the shared printer continued to function. I have no idea if it will work with wireless sharing - it is also done 'at your own risk'

Hi All,
How can i enable printer properites button during printing, users want to change the print format and print options like potrait or landscape which can be selected form print window properties button.
The change must not reflect the global users , only independent users who wants change in formats.
I have tried giving the new string value in regedit in windows under SAPLPD -> in client system propertychange allowed =1, still same result.

Why can't I print wirelessly?

I have an HP 3180 All-in-One printer. It has been working perfectly when plugged directly into my MacBook. But when I plug it into the USB port on my Belkin wireless router, nothing will print. I know it must have something to do with settings, but I don't know where to start. I enabled printer sharing and file sharing in my system preferences, but no go.
Even with the printer directly plugged into the MacBook, my other laptops (one MacBook w/Leopard and two PC's running XP Pro) can't print unless I bring them over, unplug the USB and plug them directly into my other laptops.
I'd love for my son to be able to print out his homework from another room, but I must be missing something. What the heck am I doing wrong?

You've got two issues going at once. Setup in Print & fax, plus, driver.
HP's driver is written to support direct USB only. You need a third-party CUPS driver to do network printing. Install the 3-part hpijs driver set:

Printer Sharing is for when you have a printer connected to your Mac and you want it shared to another computer - not for this situation.
As a guess, try adding the printer in Print & Fax using +, IP printer > HP jetdirect protocol. If that doesn't work, tell me the Belkin model so I can read the manual.

Can't turn off printer sharing in 10.4.7

I came in this morning to check on my lab computers and noticed a ton of duplicate printers on my network. I narrowed it down to a single computer, but I can't seem to turn off Printer Sharing in System Preferences. The only thing I changed recently was upgrade/install the latest version of CUPS.
Any suggestions on how I can turn off Printer Sharing? Is there a command line cmd to turn it off?

Just to make sure you didn't overlook the obvious (we all do it more often than we care to admit). Can you toggle the other services in the Sharing pane? Perhaps you just need to click on the padlock and authenticate before you can make changes.
Second thing to try. Make sure System Preferences is not open. Look in the user's Home folder/Library/Caches. Find a cache item com.apple.preferencepanes.cache. Delete this item. Log the user out and log back in. Now open System Preferences and see if you can make the changes.
Third thing to try. Here are the items that get changed in the /etc/cups/cupds.conf file when you turn Printer Sharing OFF---

All these changes are taken from a modification of the default cupsd.conf as supplied with the version of CUPS Apple supplies with Tiger. The cupsd.conf that comes with version 1.2.x is most likely different. You will have to do some comparison and interpretation.

EDIT: Don't forget to recycle the cupsd whenever you make a change to the configuration file.

If you're using a fully-capable web browser, why would you need a gateway? Just hit the webmail url, and you're done.
If you would rather use a "fat" client, Messaging is fully capable of responding to any client that talks IMAP or POP. No gateway needed.

Can't enable developper mode on Nokia N9: server d...

I'm trying to enable developper mode for the first time on my Nokia N9 and I get the following message:
Download failed
Can't complete the download.
Connection to the application provider was lost.
Try again later.
I don't know if the problem is on my side or on Nokia server side. Can someone tell me if they are able to download the developper mode additional applications from Nokia at the moment?

Have you seen this (attachments). There are some files missing...
I talked to my Nokia service center, they told me that I'm not supposed to use the developer mode??? Is that just an excuse because they can't handle the problem? I have nobody to ask and trust here.
