OS X Server Intel ??

Any idea when OS X Server for Intel will be available?
I have lots of clients interested to buy Macs for network and services server, but I am not crazy to tell them to buy a PPC Mac today!!
And some of them need a small server that will use a single Mac Mini.
However... today I need to use OS X for Intel, compile UNIX applications and install.

No announcement on OS X Server (Intel) has been made, but to hazard a guess I'd say it would be tied in with the release of an upgrade to the XServe line. Now that the Intel Woodcrest and Conroe chipsets have been released, the ball is in their court. Something may come out of the WWDC keynote in a couple of weeks.
Apple doesn't really market OS X Server for use on any of its workstations (e.g. Mac mini), so the delay is understandable from their perspective. However, you may be able to accomplish most of what you need just with the base OS X install as a small workgroup server - AFP/SMB file services, Apache web hosting, and network gateway support (via Internet Sharing) are all available in the workstation version, to at least a limited degree.
What OS X Server features in particular do you need to run on an Intel Mac?

  • Mac OS X Server (Intel) non existent?

I ordered a Mac Pro a few weeks ago - today I learned that there's another delay. We planned on using the thing as a server for a PC lab. As it looks, all that's holding up the shippment is OS X Server - looks to me as though the software isn't available at all.
Has anyone gotten his Mac Pro with a server license?
If OS X server really isn't ready - why don't they just let the customers know? In our case, the beginning of the semester is getting closer and closer and I'm getting really worried here. I'll probably have to go with a Linux server if the Mac Pro doesn't ship by next week

Mac os X server on intel does exist but i dare think it is NOT yet ready for limelight ... i just tried to test out to transfer stuff and system from an MBP to a stock Mac Pro .... no go at all the system hangs on me (meaning there are differences in between the Core Duo install and the Xeon one making cross booting impossible at the time i type this ( you cannot install on a MacBookPro a 10.4.x client and install your stuff then clone it up as a target drive to your brand spanking MacPro) .
... Mac os X server is as far as my guesses go still in the development cycle and as you may well know from reading the 10.4.7 server forum there are yet a load of pitfalls and gaps in this version of mac os X server. However the community keeps trying to figure some of them out.
As far as my Mac Pro CTO is concerned i have also been bumped way far into the shipdate and started to work things out on a stock machine whose video card does not even support a 30 inch screen (running at 1280x800 on a 30inch .. how worse can it get ??? ) ...
At the present time if you would need a server deployment yesterday a PPC machine would do great , if on the other hand you want the latest hardware and software build there does not seem to be easy ways since 16GB ram configuration got bumped to september 20th at the earliest time Euro side, that high end video card seem to create problems (Nvidia !!!) .
And last but not least that some of the operating system dont allow much at all in terms of cross or upgrading ... as with all new Apple Hardware stabilization takes time and loads of corrections.
If you need a linux solution that would be ready to deploy last year ,i would suggest you look for ubuntu builds there seems to be good things there , i have however NO idea of how the things behave on a Mac Pro at this time since i am just in the very first steps with the stock machine at hand that performs lamely because of a total lack of ram (1GB is such a bad Joke) and sports a video card my 5 year old Wintel would consider a joke for any 3D design.

  • Remote Server Admin not working from outside of network for 1 server

Our company recently changed ISPs and I had to change our two 10.4 server's IP addresses. We have a mail server (intel xserve) and a file/web server (quicksilver g4). Both servers have two network cards in them. The problem is two-fold:
1- I can successfully manage the Xserve machine locally on our network and from my home. However, I can only manage the Quicksilver g4 server locally. Any kind of external access is not even acknowledged.
2- I'm not sure if I missed any steps when changing IP addresses for these server-based computers. Also, I'm not sure if I correctly set our dns names to the correct IP address.
For some background, this is the exact IP update process I used for each server:
Quicksilver G4 (file/web server) - Installed network card #2 and configured it with the new Public IP in the "System Preferences/Network" panel. In Server Admin I set our website to use the new public IP address. (network card #2 has no firewall device in between it and the internet.)
Then, I configured the default network card #1 to a static, yet private IP address that's behind our DLink firewall device with the rest of our network.
Intel Xserve (e-mail server) - Network card #1 was the only one setup before our network change. It had a static, public IP address. When we changed ISPs, I configured network card #2 to the new static, public IP address supplied to us by the new ISP in the "System Preferences/Network" panel. This new IP address is where all email traffic currently gets pointed to. (All mail is successfully sent and delivered.) Until our former ISP gets shutdown, I still have network card #1 configured to the older static public IP address. After the old ISP is shut off, I plan on changing network card #1 to a static, private address.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

What should I check in AD?  I am by no means an expert with AD.
Yes, I am using the same client OS.
I am talking about RDP over the internet, like from home to the office.  We have a static IP assigned to the router from ISP.  A static internal IP assigned to the server on the LAN.  And the router port forwards 3389 to the assigned IP.
It was working fine before we reinstalled Server 2012.  These are the steps I took when reinstalling:
    1. format drive and install OS
    2. rename the server
    3. install SQL server
    4. Install TFS and SharePoint
    5. Add Active Directory role and promote to Domain Controller
    6. Add domain users
    7. Enable remote access on the server and add users to remote access list

  • Printing problems on Server 2008R2 - Server 2012R2

    Hi,
We have troubles with Firefox and printing pages.
First i want to say i have already tried all this steps:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-printing-problems-firefox
    Let me explain my problem:
In a TerminalServer Session i want to print a website from firefox.
Sending the print job in Firefox works without error reports, but then the printer "Data" lamp is blinking and the printer Says proccessing.
First i thought the printer has been broken but then i tried this on 6 other printers in our company.
    Printers: HP, Sharp, Brother, Develop.
Every Printer has the same problem. No one could print anything anymore. I had to turn off the printers to get them working again.
Resetting the about:config -> print_printers was not working, after this the printer was printing one Job then the problem was there again.
I also have deleted the profile in AppData, but this has not resolved the problem.
So can you please tell me what the problem is?

    Hi,
The Dump File has abaout 290mb, what should i do with that file?
The Machines are running on 2 different Hyper-V 2012R2 Hosts,(1 HP Server and 1 Supermicro Server, Intel Xeon 2620V2) the latest Integration Services Drivers on the guest machines are up to date.
    This is the printing Problem:
Firefox sends the Webpage to the Printer. After a short time the printing Job is cleared from the list of actual Jobs.
The Printer Says now he got a Job an says "Processing...", well.. this happens by every printer in our Company.
Only turning off the Printer and on again makes the Printer working again to print anything from other programs.
At the moment where someone sends a print Job from Firefox (Problem exists only on TerminalServers 2008, 2008R2, 2012, 2012R2.) to any Printer, the Printer must be restarted to work again.
    Printing from Server 2003R2 works.

  • SQL Server Windows NT - 64 Bit in Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

    Hi,
We have started migrating our SQL Server 2005 version and Operating System 2003 to SQL Server 2012 and operating system 2012 R2 Standard.
Before we restore the production database, we had created an empty database and tables. We ran couple of packages which were migrated to SSIS 2012 version from SSIS 2005 and those were working fine and we saw good performance compare to production server.
Recently we have taken 2005 SQL Server database backup and restored on 2012 version. Since then we are facing performance issues on 2012 server. Below is the configuration of 2012 server
    Intel(R) Xenon(R) CPU E5-2650 v2 @2.60 GHZ 2.60 GHZ (2 processors), RAM - 32 GM and 64-Bit Operating System.
We are using this server only for data loading from SSIS packages. We have set that this server to use MAX memory is 25 GB RAM. We have checked the memory usage of the server and seen SQL Server Windows NT - 64 bit process is taking total memory allotted
and also taking 100% CPU utilization.
    Old Server Configuration is
    Intel(R) Xenon(TM) MP CPU 3.66 GHZ, RAM - 8 GB and 32-Bit Operating System
Could you please let us know what was causing for the high memory utilization on our migration server and make the server for better performance?
Attached the image of memory utilization.

    Hello,
I would start by setting maxdop (max degree of parallelism) properly:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlsakthi/p/maxdop-calculator-sqlserver.aspx
    Rebuilding indexes and statistics too.
    Hope this helps.

  • SGA_TARGET SIZE 3GB in 10g Release 2 server on windows 2003 E Server?

    hi,
As suggested earlier , please go through following notes as it will help you understand the concepts clearly
Note:342080.1. This note talks in detail on how to use more than 4GB RAM on Windows.
Note:225349.1 Implementing Address Windowing Extensions (AWE) or VLM on Windows Platforms
You can not set SGA_TARGET greater then 2.7 G on windows 32 bit machine. Yes , you can have SGA greater then 3 Gb but by using AWE which requires to unset SGA_TARGET and use db_block_buffers instead of db_cache_size.

  • Database standby configuration using Intel and Risk processors

    Hi
We are planning to configure a standby database, but we want to use a DELL 2950 server with processors Intel. Our primary database version is Oracle RAC 10gR2 10.2.0.3 64 bits (the standby server has the same oracle version) with two nodes using IBM P550 boxes with processors P6 (RISK) server. Both databases (primary and standby databases) have Linux Red Hat 4 – 64 Bits. But I don’t know if is possible to make this configuration, could you tell me about it.
    Thanks

Thanks a lot for your help.
I’ll start with the configuration. Our client decided to use that server (Intel proccesor) as standby server, he knows the possible performance degradation

  • 1 10.6 MacMini Server + 78 10.5 XServe G5s

    Hello
I have 78 Dual 2.0GHZ G5 Xserves which will be running OS X Server 10.5.7
    I have a 6TB XServe RAID
I also have a brand new Apple MacMini Server (Intel) running OS X Server 10.6.x
I am hoping to take content produced in Final Cut Studio 3 (running on Intel MacBook Pros / Mac Pros) and be able to utilise the suite of older XServes as QMaster nodes. I have read there can be issues mixing intel and ppc units, but was hoping that the MacMini Server could be the controller which then segments jobs between the G5s.
Ideally, I would love for one of the XServe G5 units to be able to be the QMaster Controller.
Any advice or caveats of this approach would be greatly appreciated!

And With ben's comment... Versions of Quicktime, Versions of Compressor, and Versions of Qmaster, must all be the same... And on that note I don't believe the latests support PPC (G5) ...
Best of my knowledge, using the G5's for encoding isn't an option if you're trying to go latest versions of things.

  • QTSS/Adobe Media Server and Hardware Optimization

    HI all,
I am trying to make an informed choice between deploying either QTSS (free and on Mac) or Adobe Media Server (about $20,000 and on Linux). In our application we will have about 700 simultaneous connections to our service. About 400 of these users will be viewing one of four live video feeds (from presenters at an expo). The remaining users will hold one-to one video chats through our site. We have direct fiber bandwidth of 100megs and our video streams are held to 320x240 at 15fps. I have extensive Mac experience and currently use XServe for our other web service. I have three main questions.
    1) Does anyone have suggestions/experience on the use of QTSS instead of Adobe Media Server in this size application?
    2) If QTSS is used, how many servers and what configurations would you recommend for balancing this size workload?
    3) What load balancing hardware would be appropriate for this project if multiple servers are needed?
I really appreciate any help that might be offered. Thanks

The new auth plugin still doesn't work against Wirecast/FM 1.0 agents. The only way I was able to block these agents was through the main.asc file you put in your application. On the function application.onConnect insert this
    if( (p_client.agent.search("Wirecast")!=-1) || (p_client.agent.search("FM 1")!=-1) )
            trace (p_client.agent + " FM 1.0/Wirecast agent detected ...rejecting connection from "+p_client.ip);
            return false;
How do you require WireCast agents to be forced to enter a password?
Where/how do you put this action script, does anyone have any examples?

OK - some more info: new message tells me that the connection timed out - how can this be when the other macs on 10.5 are fine?

  • Flash crashes PXE-Server

    Hello!
We use RedHat-PXE-Server Intel PXE daemon, PXE-2.0 Beta-1
(build 001). When we startet using PXE for setup new machines, we
use dhcp-relay to diffrent machines (DHCP-Server and DHCP-Proxy ie.
PXE-Server) At least 5 times a day some machines send out a
dhcp-packet for searching an fms server and this packet crashes the
pxe-server, because i think this packet is malformed. The
DHCP-Server has no problem with this packet, but the pxe-server.
This problem is seen on flash 8 and above. The contents of this
packets can be viewd with tcpdump or ethereal/wireshark and it
    says:
    Adobe Flash Proxy Auto-Discovery
    +ktag=fpadreq;timestamp=28649419;zone=0;uri=rtmp://213.200.107.231:80/ondemand?_fcs_vhost= cp31165.edgefcs.net
How can i prevent the Flashplayer from creating those
packets? We do not use any Edge or FMS or what the hell else.

Jay is correct - Flash Media Encoding Server is a companion product to Flash Media Server that will encode/transcode files to Flash friendly formats for delivery via Flash Media Server or other forms of delivery.  It is not meant for live capture and encode - simply for preparing VOD files for delivery.   For more about encoding for Flash and the various Adobe and products in this space for both Live and VOD - you may want to read an article I wrote on our developer center.

  • Yast installation problem on Oracle Enterprise Linux Rel 5 Upd 2

    Hi,
I installed Oracle Enterprise Linux Rel 5 Upd 2 on a new server (Intel 64 bit) with the downloads from oracle
    (Enterprise-R5-U2-Server-x86_64-disc1.iso till Enterprise-R5-U2-Server-x86_64-disc6.iso).
Then I wanted to install Yast for administering my machine and downloaded yast_el5_x86_64.tar, again from Oracle. Running the Yast install routine it required the perl-Digest-SHA package. I downloaded that from Oracle ULN and installed it.
Now, running the Yast install routine again, I get a bunch of warnings and errors about failed dependencies and NOKEY's.
Here I copied a part of it:

  • Remote rejected error with git

I'm trying to get a git public repository installed on server and can't seem to push an update.
I have my server local user with ssh access and file transfers seem to go fine. I have git 1.6.0.4 installed on both development iMac PPC (10.5.5) and server Intel (10.5.5). I included git-shell path in /etc/shells and /etc/shells.personal.
The public repository was deposited on an external drive with scp and everything looks good. Permissions to the files are in place. Following git installation to /usr/local, I added /usr/local/libexec/git-core to the $PATH variable.
I even chmoded the hooks files for execution.
However, when I make a change on the development side and then commit, followed by a push to the server side I get
    "Compressing 3 objects. Done
    Writing 5 objects. Done
    Output:
    Counting objects: 9, done.
    Total 5 (delta 3), reused 3 (delta 2)
    fatal: exec unpack-objects failed.
error: unpack failed: unpacker exited with error code
    To server:/Volumes/dir.git
! [remote rejected] master -> master (n/a (unpacker error))
error: failed to push some refs to 'server:/Volumes/dir.git'"
All my google efforts produced linux type solutions. I did add a report back hook for update but I don't see any response.
Console secure log indicates the ssh publickey is accepted and file transfer seems to go through.
My guess is that git-unpack-objects is not called.
I tried git gc and git fsck to cleanup any residual files and received no errors.
On initial transfer of the public repository and subsequent push I received an "Everything is up to date". It's the push following a new commit that hangs.
Any advice from someone running git on server?
    TIA,
    Harry

I went back to a package install of git-1.5.4.5 on my ppc iMac and git-1.6.0.4 on Leopard server. Still not much luck.
After re-examining permissions and setting paths, I finally got a push to work using Paul Johnston's approach at
    http://marc.info/?l=git&m=122101378608279&w=2
    # Fix it with symlinks in /usr/bin
    server:~ $ cd /usr/bin/
    server:/usr/bin $ sudo ln -s /usr/local/git/bin/git* .
I don't understand why I need the symlink is needed unless the ssh connection doesn't allow execution from a path location other than /usr/bin or /usr/sbin.
Once the symlink was installed for each of the git directory components then the push executed fine. I did use the +master:master to get a non fast-forward.
Not sure if that is still required but the connection worked.
Hope this helps someone in addition to me.

  • How bad is it to have 4 network mounts for home folders?

I am the tech curriculum guy at a middle school and also manage the servers. I am not an expert at all. Learn enough to make it work efficiently. We got a new server (intel). I am in the process of migrating all the users, groups, home folders and data etc. Had some problems so I called Apple, in my discussion with the tech support there (3-4 hours solving problems) one of the techs questioned my setup. Here is what I used to do:
Server one has all the users in workgroup manager. The home folders for the 6th, 7th and 8th graders are on two separate drive bays on server one. Each grade level folder is a network mount. I then have the faculty home folders on a server two. There is also a shared folder called "Stuff" which mounts for all users and has clipart, movies etc. It is basically a read only mount. The faculty home folders are network mounts of their home folders.
I service between 400 and 500 students a day in the lab, it is quite busy, with anywhere from 60 to 90 users logged on at one time. My thinking last year was that if I could spread out the home folders on different drives, the students wouldn't all be hitting the same drive for saves, data etc. So that one drive wouldn't be spinning its brains out to keep everyone going. That is why I have the 4 network mounts for the home folders. One for each grade level (6,7,8) and the faculty.
My new server has three drives, two of them for home folders. The drives are 750 gb each. He (apple tech) suggested I create a folder in each drive, set it as the network mount and within that folder put two sets of home folders. So, then I would only have two network mounts, but retain my four sets of home folders that would be within the network mounts.
I guess my question is, which is better, to have the 4 network mounts with separate home folder locations on 2 different servers, or consolidate the home folders into 2 network mounts on one server.
He said that the more network mounts, the longer it takes to get computers started up.
Any expert advice here would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, hope I explained this well enough.

I don't think the logins take too long, we may wait 30 seconds or so for the students to login. We have had problems when 60 kids leave and 60 more come in, some login and after the username and password are entered, the login begins then locks. The Apple tech guy thought that could be aggravated by the 4 network mounts. I just sort of thought that with students and teachers accessing 4 different hard drives, that it wouldn't tax one drive as much. I agree that a longer login is a small price to pay for faster working speeds.
