OS X Server Primary Domain Controller - Win XP clients can't add printers

Hello all,
I have a Xserve set up as a PDC with Open Directory / File / Print services running. I have set up a test client, a Windows XP box, with a test user, and it authenticates fine, logs in, directories are mapped, life is good
When I browse to the Printers on that server and go to "Connect" on any print queue I get the following:
"A policy is in effect on your computer which prevents you from connecting to this print queue. Please contact your system administrator."
The print queues were set up in Server Admin as IPP / SMB / LPR + Bonjour shares. We don't really care who prints to what printer on our network, so access rights aren't a big deal.
Ultimately I would like a user to login and these printers just be setup automatically via a login script, but I can't even do that until this is sorted out. Any ideas?
Thanks for your time and assistance

...Someday I'll be an expert at this Mac Server + Win Client stuff, just not today

I do not have guest access on, because I want to monitor who is printing, but also have no file shares either - I want to keep separation between file and print servers.
Finally found an (the?) answer.
1. Set up a standard TCP/IP port pointing to the IP address.
2. When the "Additional port info required" message turns up, choose 'Custom'.
3. Set to LPR (and tick 'LPR Byte Counting Enabled" - optional?)
4. Continue...
Strangely, this didn't appear to work will SMB was enabled in the print queue but it did when the queue was LPR only (maybe I just imagined that).
Not the best solution but it works for my situation.

  • 10.5.7 server as primary domain controller

    Setting up a 10.5.7 server -
Server is setup as a open directory master, I want it also to be a primary domain controller (smb).
But when I try to change it from Standalone Server to primary domain controller, using my directory admin user id and password, it just reverts back to standalone server. tried it with smb running and not running.
    Any ideas ?

Having the same issue with Leopard Server 10.5.8.
SMB was previously set up as a "Domain Member" and now I want to make it a "Primary Domain Controller".
After reboot, the Role always reverts back to "Domain Member".
    Any ideas?

  • Sun Directory Server as Primary Domain Controller.

    Hello,
I've recently installed Sun Directory Server, Access Manager, and DSEE Identity Manager, on CentOS 5.2, with success, but my question is:
Can I use this directory as a primary domain controller for my network, I want to know if it is possible to integrate this directory in the same way that Active Directory works, I mean connecting Windows computers to the DC with some kind of connector (because windows won't connect to another directory than AD natively). I know that there are some MSGina replacements, like pgina, but I'm looking for some serious solution, especially for computers running Windows Vista.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
thanks for your answer, but.. there is a way to configure the DSEE to be like a native 2000/2003 Active Directory?, I mean, connecting directly to the DSEE without using Samba, I know that is possible to use that solution, but you lose some functionality.
I've been trying to do some research about the topic, like modifying the bind DNS to act like a AD DNS, and it works at a certain grade, windows xp detects the SVR records but when it tries to connect to the directory it fails giving me an error telling that the DC isn't available. It will be great to make such environment, Windows XP / Vista connected to DSEE without third party software.
Any comment would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Solaris 11 server as Primary Domain Controller

    Hi,
All of our servers run Solaris (currently 10, but looking to upgrade to 11). In each of our offices we have one server configured as a Primary Domain Controller via Samba to provide naming services to our Windoze users. I would like to continue with that arrangement, but I would also like to leverage the built-in SMB/CIFS support.
My question is this: is this an either/or proposition? That is, if I want to run my server as a PDC, does that mean I use the traditional Samba implementation and cannot use the built-in SMB/CIFS services?
I've reviewed the Solaris docs, but I don't see any mention of this topic.
    Thanks,
    Bill

Well, they have an entire manual dedicated to the SMB/CIFS services in S11 ( [Oracle Solaris Administration: SMB and Windows Interoperability|http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23824_01/html/821-1449/index.html] ). In that manual, they go into great detail on how to configure your S11 server as a member of an AD domain or a Windoze workgroup using the built-in SMB/CIFS support (which sounds a lot like the white paper you reference). The PDC technique is a pre-AD concept (WinNT) that Samba 3.x does a nice job of emulating (I've been using it since at least Solaris 9, and maybe even 8?). The Samba docs dedicate an entire chapter to using Samba 3.x as a domain controller ([Chapter 4. Domain Control|http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/samba-pdc.html]).
Yes, AD is LDAP+Kerberos, and that's what making a S11 server a member of the AD domain leverages since the PAM modules that are included with Solaris support both. The problem is that we don't run any Windows Server machines (licensing costs are ridiculous if all you need it for is an AD server). The PDC approach with Samba is a very affordable, flexible alternative to running a WIndows server. The aforementioned chapter in the Samba documentation references AD, and says that the Samba Domain Control feature is not AD (and may never be).
    Thanks for your reply.

  • What is the best practice and Microsoft best recommended procedure of placing "FSMO Roles on Primary Domain Controller (PDC) and Additional Domain Controller (ADC)"??

    Hi,
I have Windows Server 2008 Enterprise  and have
2 Domain Controllers in my Company:
    Primary Domain Controller (PDC)
    Additional Domain Controller (ADC)
My (PDC) was down due to Hardware failure, but somehow I got a chance to get it up and transferred
    (5) FSMO Roles from (PDC) to (ADC).
Now my (PDC) is rectified and UP with same configurations and settings.  (I did not install new OS or Domain Controller in existing PDC Server).
Finally I want it to move back the (FSMO Roles) from
(ADC) to (PDC) to get UP and operational my (PDC) as Primary.
(Before Disaster my PDC had 5 FSMO Roles).
Here I want to know the best practice and Microsoft best recommended procedure for the placement of “FSMO Roles both on (PDC) and (ADC)” ?
In case if Primary (DC) fails then automatically other Additional (DC) should take care without any problem in live environment.
Example like (FSMO Roles Distribution between both Servers) should be……. ???
Primary Domain Controller (PDC) Should contains:????
    Schema Master
    Domain Naming Master
Additional Domain Controller (ADC) Should contains:????
    RID
    PDC Emulator
    Infrastructure Master
Please let me know the best practice and Microsoft best recommended procedure for the placement of “FSMO Roles.
I will be waiting for your valuable comments.
    Regards,
    Muhammad Daud

Here I want to know the best practice
and Microsoft best recommended procedure for the placement of “FSMO Roles both on (PDC) and (ADC)” ?
There is a good article I would like to share with you:http://oreilly.com/pub/a/windows/2004/06/15/fsmo.html
For me, I do not really see a need to have FSMO roles on multiple servers in your case. I would recommend making it simple and have a single DC holding all the FSMO roles.
    In case if
Primary (DC) fails then automatically other Additional (DC) should take care without any problem in live environment.
No. This is not true. Each FSMO role is unique and if a DC fails, FSMO roles will not be automatically transferred.
There is two approaches that can be followed when an FSMO roles holder is down:
If the DC can be recovered quickly then I would recommend taking no action
If the DC will be down for a long time or cannot be recovered then I would recommend that you size FSMO roles and do a metadata cleanup
Attention! For (2) the old FSMO holder should never be up and online again if the FSMO roles were sized. Otherwise, your AD may be facing huge impacts and side effects.

    Hello friedns :
We have a company with about 2000 users , and two windows server 2003 domain controllers , one of them acts as a primary domain controller , and the other acts as secondary domain controller , all the FSMO s are on the primary DC ,we have decided to upgrade all of our servers from windows server 2003 to windows server 2008 , the first step is to upgrade the domain controllers to windows server 2008 , our domain controllers are so sensitive and has to be active 24 hours a day , i have stress upgrading it to windows server 2008 , what is the best solution to upgrade it with no risk ?
( i have an opinion but i am not sure and i dont have any guide about it , i want to install a windows server 2008 and promote it as an additional domain controller to the windows server 2003 DC and the transfer all the FSMOs to it , and then promote the first domain controller !!! is that possible ? if yes , is there any guide about it? )
If there is a guide available for it please let me know . (Specially if there is a tip & trick)
    thank you guys.

    Hi,
This TechNet online article might be helpful for you.
How to Upgrade Domain Controllers to Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee522994(WS.10).aspx
For your convenience, I have list some general steps for your reference.
Since the following operation have potential damage to Active Directory database, it is highly suggested that you'd better perform a full backup of Active Directory (System State) firstly. Also it is better to test the following procedure in a similar lab environment first.
    General Steps:
    =============
    1. Verify the new server's TCP/IP configuration has been pointed to the current DNS server.
    2. Make the new server become a member server of the current Windows Server 2003 domain first.
    3. Upgrade the Windows Server 2003 forest schema to Windows Server 2008 schema with the "adprep /forestprep" command on old server.
Please run the "adprep.exe /forestprep" command from the Windows Server 2008 installation disk on the schema master. To do this, insert the Windows Server 2008 installation disk, and then type the following command:
    Drive:\sources\ADPREP\adprep.exe /forestprep
    4. Upgrade the Windows 2003 domain schema with the "adprep /domainprep" command on old server.
Please run the "adprep.exe /domainprep" command from the Windows Server 2008 installation disk on the infrastructure master. To do this, insert the Windows Server 2008 installation disk, and then type the following command:
    Drive:\sources\ADPREP \adprep.exe /domainprep
    5. Insert Windows Server 2008 Installation Disc in the new server.
    6. Run "dcpromo" on new server to promote it as an additional domain controller in existing Windows 2003 domain, afterwards you may verify the installation of Active Directory.
    Please refer to:
How to Verify an Active Directory Installation in Windows Server 2003
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816106
    7. Verify the new server's TCP/IP configuration has been pointed to current DNS server.
    8. Enable Global Catalog on new server and manually Check Replication Topology and afterwards manually trigger replication (Replicate Now) to synchronize Active Directory database between 2 replicas.
Please note: It will some time to replicate GC between DC, please wait some time with patience.
    9. Disable Global Catalog on the old DC.
    10. Transfer all the FSMO roles from the old DC to the new DC.
    Please refer to:
How to view and transfer FSMO roles in Windows Server 2003
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324801
    11. Verify that the old DNS Server Zone type is Active Directory-Integrated. If not, please refer to:
How To: Convert DNS Primary Server to Active Directory Integrated
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816101
Note: Active Directory Integrated-Zone is available only if DNS server is a domain controller.
    12. Install DNS component on new server and configure it as a new DNS Server (Active Directory Integrated-Zone is preferred). All the DNS configuration should be replicated to the new DNS server with Active Directory Replication.
    13. Make all the clients change TCP/IP configuration to point to new server as DNS.
    14. You may configure TCP/IP on all the clients, or adjust DHCP scope settings to make them use the new DNS server.
Please note: It is a good practice to make the old DC offline for several days and check whether everything works normally with the new server online. If so, you may let the old DC online and run DCPROMO to demote it.
    Hope it helps.

  • Server 2008 Domain Controller won't sync with domain for time

    Hi,
I have a Windows Server 2008 Domain Controller, a physical machine. When I run w32tm /query /status it shows the source as: Local CMOS clock. What ever I seem to try I cannot get it to look at the PDC to sync for time. Using RsOP I can see the correct policy
is in place, pointing to the correct server. I have checked the registry key and the correct server is in there under \HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Paramaters.
I have tried various w32tm commands such as seeting the /manualpeerlist to the correct server, /syncfromflags:DOMHIER. I have also used w32tm /config /update, making sure to restart the w32time service.
But whatever I do I cannot get it to sync from the network, it always shows Local CMOS clock. The time on the server is starting to drift now. When I use w32tm /resync /rediscover I get an error message:  "The computer did not resync because no time
data was available". There is no firewall between the 2 servers blocking port 123.
Any ideas why this is happening?

  • Hardware Requirements for a Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller.

    Hi,
I have a secondary office with 10 users with a domain controller that has reached its end of life.  We like to upgrade the current hardware to serve as a domain controller and potentially as an onsite file server that will sync with head office during
    off peak business hours.
Any recommendations for a low cost yet reliable hardware for the above solution ?

  • Renaming Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller with Exchange Server 2013

Is it possible to rename Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller, as we are using Exchange Server 2013 as a member server on Windows Server 2012 ?
We have some issues with the Domain Name, so want to rename..
Maybe somebody knows the best practices how to do this in best way???
    Thanks.

    Hello,
    You should do the following:
    1. Promote another DC.
    2. Transfer FSMO roles to that server.
    3. Decommission old DC.
    4. Rename it.
    5. Promote it again as DC.

Yes I did see that article, and there are plenty of logs from another device that authenticates via
RADIUS. Requests from our 802.1x wireless network are giving the "the specified domain does not exist" error. I can enter the username asusername,
    username@domain, or domain\username and
    neither method fixes the error.

  • Server 2012 Domain Controller Logging event 2004, with error "crc check"...

Pretty new domain, and domain controller, running server 2012 as a Hyper-V VM.
Getting this error when it reboots.  I have done a chkdsk, thinking maybe the vhdx file is corrupt in some way.  Have also checked the system log for events talking about file corruption.  Nothing.
The disk in question has 10+ GB free, so disk space is not an issue.  I ran dcdiag /q /a & it told me that DFSR has logged events in the last 24 hours, but nothing else.  AD seems to think everything is cool.
Not sure what to look at next...  Thanks for any pointers/help.
The DFS Replication service stopped replication on volume C:. This failure can occur because the disk is full, the disk is failing, or a quota limit has been reached. This can also occur if the DFS Replication service encountered errors while attempting to
stage files for a replicated folder on this volume.

  • Server 2012 Domain Controller / DNS Issue

If you did ipconfig /registerdns, I'm assuming you did ipconfig /flushdns prior to that correct? Just want to make sure...
Once you are sure you did both, go ahead and type in nslookup in the command prompt. What does it display as the current DNS server? Once you type that in, you can type in the IP address of your new DC and see what it resolves to. Please get back to us with those results when possible.

We had a domain controller go down in a multi domain controller environment. We set a new one up and promoted it to the domain. Assigned it all the necessary roles and joined it to the domain. It has been 4 days since we did this and we cannot ping it by host name. We can ping it by IP address. I have forced replication, which allowed me to ping it by host name for a few hours, but then it stopped working. I have tried to change the DNS primary to a different DC, making the host a secondary DNS, that didn't fix it. I am looking for any suggestions on how to fix it. I have done a ipconfig /registerdns , restarted DNS services but still not able to ping host name of DC on a consistent basis.
    Any suggestions ?

  • ACS 4.1 support with Windows Server 2012 Domain controller

I am upgrading my Domain Controller / Active Directory from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012.
In my environment, I am using Cisco ACS 4.1 which is integrated with Windows Server 2003 Active Directory.
Will ACS4.1 will work fine with my new domain controller (Windows server 2012) or I need to upgrade my ACS too?
    Regards,
    Junaid

    Junaid,
ACS 4.x code doesn't even support Windows 2008 R2. Your best bet is to migrate the ACS from 4.x to ACS 5.4 Patch 2 or stay with windows 2003 or 2008 (Non-R2).
ACS 5.4 patch 2 supports Windows 2012 AD.

It does work on a non-domain controller.

  • Pricing for VM running WS 2012 E R2 primarily as domain controller for ~5 clients

    Hi
I am starting a small medical clinic, with only about 6 client PCs.  However, I  would like a domain network structure for security purposes moving forward rather than a workgroup.
I'm looking at either purchasing a modest server (ie HP Proliant ml310) with windows server 2012 essentials r2 and using it locally (total cost ~$1500) or using a Windows Azure virtual machine to run the domain controller over a VPN.  We already use
office 365 e3, so don't really need a local server for email, storage etc. I already have an old synology NAS that could be used for disk images etc that we would lose out on with the hosted server solution.
Can someone verify my calculations for monthly cost estimate I tried using the calculator --1 small VM + 225 GB storage for the OS came to $65/month
Would I be able to run it on the small virtual machine or would I need to go up to medium just for the OS?  If the later is the case it would definitely not be cost effective.
    Thanks for the help
    TM
