OS X shortnames and Active Directory

Hi all,
Our organization is implementing directory services for the first time. I was pretty excited to successfully extend my AD schema with apple-specific attributes (as outlined in the well-cited white paper). I'm able to log in to my AD domain with Mac clients and store OS X specific account information in AD, which is mighty skookum.
However, I'm dismayed that the schema extension didn't include extra user shortnames. I was planning on binding our POP3/IMAP servers to the AD. But without shortnames, I have to manage people's e-mail aliases using the postfix aliases file, and users MUST log in with the Windows shortname format (eg: "jsmith") as opposed to the OS X format (eg: "johnsmith").
I find it a little bizarre that there's no way to do this. Can the AD schema not be extended to store a user's OS X shortnames? Do I have to set up a "magic triangle" to achieve this functionality?
Any info appreciated. Thanks!

  • Can't figure out how to change username, shortname and home directory?

    Hello,
Trying to change the username, shortname and home directory on a new Macbook.
I tried the following article to do this:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/132693/2008/03/changeshortusername.html
This is my problem after trying the above article:
I tried this but got stuck when it came to entering my password into terminal. After entering in the sudo command I hit return and saw the password prompt but when I tried to type my password in nothing happened at all as cursor never moved. I hit return again terminal tells me that there is no folder named "new user name" I restarted my Mac and tried it all over again and got the same message. When I go into the original account I see the shortname and home directory are changed but the username is the original one I started with.
How do I make the password cursor move. Have I missed something?
My Macbook if very new and I don't care what I lose on here. Thinking of doing a complete reinstall and updating all over again. Is there a way to fix this?
    Help anyone?

After entering in the sudo command I hit return and saw the password prompt but when I tried to type my password in nothing happened at all as cursor never moved.
    This is intentional.
I hit return again terminal tells me that there is no folder named "new user name" I restarted my Mac and tried it all over again and got the same message.
Enter the actual old and new names into the Terminal instead of 'new user name'.

    Hi James,
We get External DB is not operational. Could you confirm if under External Databases > Unknown User           Policy, and verify you have the AD/ Windows database at the top?
this error means the external server might not correctly configured on ACS external database section.
Another point is to make sure we have remote agent installed on supported windows server.

Also provide the Auth logs from the server running remote agent, e.g.:-

  • Sun java directory server and Active Directory

We are using two different directory servers Sun java directory server and active directory.
My question is how we can have password synchronization between these two directory servers.
I have checked Sun Java[TM] System Identity Synchronization for Windows 1 2004Q3
    http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=41537425
It seems that it's supported platforms is only for solaris and windows , but I have installed my Sun java directory server on linux and obviously it doesn't work for me.
I would be grateful if anyone can suggest a solution to work around this situation.
I have checked identity manager , I would like to know that if I can do this using this product.
    http://www.sun.com/software/products/identity_mgr/specs.jsp
    --regards.
    Sara

Yes RHEL 4 is a supported OS with DSEE 6.0.
Identity Synchronization for Windows is a part of DSEE that allows synchronization of users, passwords and groups between Sun Directory Server and Active Directory bi-directionally without altering the users environments, ie it does not require that users change their current habits.
Identity Manager is a complete identity management solution that is targetting enterprise work flow when it comes to user provisioning and de-provisioning, but also allows to build authentication and password change forms that will provision the passwords to many different systems including Sun Directory Server and Active Directory but also IBM mainframes, legacy applications, databases...
If you are implementing a complete identity management solution, then go with Identity Manager. If you need a lightweight and fast solution for just synchronizing users and passwords between Sun DS and MS AD, Identity Synchronization for Windows should be your choice.

    Ludovic.

  • ### How to make integration between UCCX and Active Directory##

    Hello,
I want to know what is the right procedure to perform a right integration between the UCCX and the Active Directory?
    Waiting Yours Reply,,,,
    Thanks a lot......

    What version?
Assuming a current version (5.0 and higher): there is NO direct integration between CCX and Active Directory. The CCX server must not be joined to a domain.
CCX uses UC Manager End Users for synchronized usernames and passwords. If UC Manager is synchronized with an LDAP source, such as Active Directory, then this will carry forward to CCX. CCX would pass authentication requests to CCX through AXL. UCM would perform the LDAP authentication and inform CCX of the success/failure.

  • Cucm 9.1.2 and Active Directory(Windows Server 2003 Standart Edition SP2)

      Hello!
Can CUCM 9.1.2 support an integration with Active Directory(Windows Server 2003 Standart Edition SP2)? How do I have to write down LDAP Manager Distinguished Name? I can find supporting only Active Directory 2003 in documentations without reference to Operation System.

    Yes, it is possible.
Check this how-to if you have any doubts about the process.

  • Difference between Windows NT domain registry and Active Directory registry

    What are the difference(s) ?

Frank, thanks for your response :)
I want WebSphere Application Server to take advantage of a directory service. There are multiple options available for a directory service.
In my configuration the requirement is to make WebSphere Application server to use Microsoft's Active Directory.
While I was going through (WebSphere) documentation, I see following note.
" With Windows NT domain registry support for Windows 2000 and 2003 domain
controllers, WebSphere Application Server only supports Global groups that are the Security type. It is recommended that you use the Active Directory registry support rather than a Windows NT domain registry if you use Windows 2000 and 2003 domain controllers
because the Active Directory supports all group scopes and types. The Active Directory also supports a nested group that is not support by Windows NT domain registry. The Active Directory is a centralized control registry."
You can find the above note in this link (somewhere after 7th line)
    http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSAW57_7.0.0/com.ibm.websphere.nd.multiplatform.doc/info/ae/ae/csec_localos.html?cp=SSAW57_7.0.0%2F3-11-5-1-0-0
Does it mean that they are recommending to use Active Directory over Windows NT (which is an older approach) with windows server 2000 or windows server 2003 because Active directory is
    advanced ?
I was under the impression that, Active Directory was started with Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Windows NT registry was used till Windows 2000 server.
    After going through above links,
Windows NT registry in an old method. However, it is compatible with Windows Server 2000 and Windows server 2003 but it is recommended to use Active directory with Windows Serve 2003 as it is more advanced. And the same is recommended in WebSphere documentation
(I am aware that support for Windows Server 2000 is over and only extended support is available for Windows Server 2003 however this is to clear doubt). Is my understanding correct ? And does windows server 2000 also support both i.e we can use either Windows
NT registry or Active directory and similarly, Either of them (Windows NT or Active Directory) could be used with Windows Server 2003 ?
And if I got it correct, Is Windows NT and Active Directory, both directory service offering from Microsoft? While NT being an old method and Active Directory being a new/advanced approach ?

  • Local accounts and active directory

I'm reposting this from the Tiger forums. I suspect that is more user-oriented and this question isn't. Apologies if this is the wrong place for it.
I've been working on getting the Macs where I work bound to Active Directory and I'm not clear on how local accounts are (or are not) affected by it.
I bound one of our Macs to AD and tested it out. It let me log in with Windows NT accounts. Cool. It gave me single sign-on access to network shares. Cool.
As a test, I had created a local account that had the same login and password as a network account, but I noticed after signing in, that the account didn't behave like a network account (i.e., no single sign-on access.) So, it appears that if a local account has the same login as a network account, the machine treats it fully as a local account. Sound reasonable.
    But... here's the twist.
Where I work, we have about 15-20 Macs, none have ever been bound to AD, all running with local accounts. (The previous Mac tech didn't know how to do this which is why it's set up that way.) I was hoping that I could change the local accounts to match the network accounts, but obviously that's not going to work. If a local machine account won't behave like a network account, how do I go about setting up the current Macs as AD machines without forcing the users to recreate their whole set up under a whole new login? Is there a way to do it?

    Rick,
OS X always checks local Netinfo directory first and if user is not found in netinfo it will check other directories based on order specified in Directory Access.
Here are the steps to follow to bind you macs to AD and still keep existing user home folders:
    - bound machine to AD
    - rename existing local-user home folder
    - delete existing local-user (since you renamed his home folder no data will be lost)
    - login AD account to cache his AD credential; this will create a new default home folder
    - delete newly created home folder and rename original home folder based on AD shortname
    - change ownership of this home folder to reflect AD account (use chown, see man page on how to use it)

  • 10.4.6 and Active Directory Problem - Volume cannot be found??

I have bound six 10.4.6 to active directory. All went sweet with no problems. I have "force local home folder" off in Directory Access for AD. I can login to the Mac no problem using any user account from AD. If I login with a user the first time all goes well. The desktop icons show and the home directory is that of the users network home folder and can browse it. All good until I log out and login again. I get the desktop icons but the users home directory give the error "The Volume for %username% Cannot be found" when trying to access. I can browse the network to the user home folder without having to authenticate. The server (2003) shows no login errors, all looks fine. I have upgraded one Mac to 10.4.7 but made no differnce.
I have installed "services for Mac and Appletalk" on the server but from what I have been told this shouldn't need to be installed but I did as I was getting no where anyway.
    Any ideas?

Before I comment, I want to define a couple of things. A "Mac home folder" stores a user's files (Documents, Library, etc.). This home folder can be stored locally on the workstation or it can be stored on a server. A "Windows home folder" is defined in a user's Active Directory account and can be used as the Mac home folder or simply as a network user folder for storage.
While the idea of a network-based Mac home folder is nice, it can be clunky simply because the entire user experience is dependent on network speed and/or good file synchronization between your server and workstation. As someone who works in a group supporting about 300 Macs, I suggest enabling local home folders and not using a network-based Mac home folder.
Next, File Services for Macintosh (AFP protocol) built into Windows Server will not support network-based Mac home folders. This is a dead end. You can install a third party product from Group Logic called ExtremeZ-IP, which does support network-based home folders over AFP.
Therefore, what's happening in your network is that the network-based Mac home folders are being mounted via the SMB protocol, which uses Windows style file sharing. SMB in Mac OS X is good for limited use but I wouldn't recommend it for extensive use, which would include network-based Mac home folders.
Here's what I suggest for your AD settings: 1.) Enable local home folders. 2.) Connect via SMB. This will keep your users' Mac home folders local to the machine but if their Windows network home folder is properly defined in their AD account settings then these should automatically mount on the Desktop via SMB at login.
If you can get your Windows home folders to mount automtically on the users' Desktops then you can experiment with synchronization. After logging in, each user can visit Apple menu --> System Preferences... --> Accounts and the synchronization options will be available. A user can synchronize all or part of his local Mac home folder to his mounted Windows home folder.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • DNS and Active Directory error 4000 server 2008

    Hello all,
My network skills aren't very good and I'm facing a dilemma. First off we have two Windows servers on the network. The newest is 2008 Standard (named Vader) and the other is 2000 (dells3). Obviously I'd like to get rid of the 2000, but the people in charge
of my budget haven't given me the option to do so and it's the only back up we have.
Earlier in the week we had lots of problems. One of our nas boxes locked everyone out who was mapped to it and it would only let me log in through the web portal. Two of our Macs our marketing department uses suddenly locked up and wouldn't let them back
in (both were part of the Active Directory). A second nas box won't let certain people map to it and for awhile I had issues logging into Vader itself.
I believe all of these problems are connected to some issues on Vader and possibly in conduction with dells3. In Server Manager under DNS I get error 4000 "The DNS server was unable to open Active Directory.
This DNS server is configured to obtain and use information from the directory for this zone and is unable to load the zone without it.  Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly and reload the zone. The event data is the error code."
Then under Active Directory Domain Services I get error 2042 "It has been too long since this machine last replicated with the named source machine. The time between replications with this source has exceeded
the tombstone lifetime. Replication has been stopped with this source."
Followed by more text I can post if needed.
Under File Services error 1202 "The DFS Replication service failed to contact domain controller  to access configuration information. Replication is stopped. The service will try again during the
next configuration polling cycle, which will occur in 60 minutes. This event can be caused by TCP/IP connectivity, firewall, Active Directory Domain Services, or DNS issues."
And finally if I try to open Active Directory Domains and Trusts "The configuration information describing this enterprise is not available. The server is not operational."
I'm not sure where to start or what to post that might help. Any and all help is appreciated.
Edit: Also I can only add dells3 as the DNS on Vader in the DNS Manager if I try to add Vader to itself I get an error.

It's the other way around.  Overall, I'm advising ripping the 2008 server out of AD and adding it back . Let's look at this as a series of steps:
1.) You do a force demote of the 2008 server because it's tombstoned.  This means the 2008 server is no longer a DC. You are doing a force because it doesn't have the ability to replicate.  If it could replicate, we'd just do a graceful demotion
    and be done with it.
2.) Once the 2008 server is demoted, we go to the 2000 server which holds the only good copy of AD.  From that server we run a metadata cleanup using the ntdsutil utility.  We use that utility to clean out references to the 2008 server which is
    no longer a DC.
3.) Once you have a clean AD, you can then promote the 2008 server back into Active Directory.  Make sure Vader is pointing to Dells3 as its primary DNS server before promoting or you'll run into issues.
    Hopefully that clarifies things.

  • Applre Remote Desktop and Active Directory

    Hi
How does one remote desktop into a Mac that in bound to Microsofts Active Directory ?
It will not accept any username/password if bound, but if unbound it connects first go.
    Suggestions ?

Have you looked into extending the Active Directory schema to support Mac OS X? Given the problems I'm having with AD Mobile Accounts, I don't even want to think about modifying the AD schema yet; and I doubt I'd get approval in the best of circumstances. But it may be useful for what you're trying to do.
See "Best Practices: Integrating Mac OS X with Active Directory" (April 2007) at
    http://images.apple.com/itpro/pdf/ADBest_Practices2.0.pdf
{quote}Extend the AD schema to handle management.
    By adding 38 attributes and 10 classes to the AD schema, your AD system can support all Mac OS X management policies. Just use the normal Mac OS X management tools and target the AD domain.{quote}

  • Mobile Account and Active Directory home folder

We install a XServe server (Mac OS X 10.6.3). We join it to Active Directory for authentification and Open Directory for policy. I read the magic triangle on the web.
I mount a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.6. I join it to AD and after to OD. When I configure an account to be mobile, the home folder configure in AD stop to mount automatically. If the account is not mobile the home folder mount correctly.
Somebody has an idea of waht happen?

Hello, sifeduc, and welcome to the AppleBoards,
This really seems like a Directory Services question and is probably best suited to this board: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1353
That being said are you talking about Portable Home Directories? If so PHDs should be created on the server first and on the client second. If you have a client account you want to sync to the OD you need to delete the client account - *but leave it in place* - create a server account and then use the local account which will then sync to the server. The steps for this are a little more complicated than that but not much.
    Good Luck,

  • Apple Mail Server and Active Directory

Has anyone had any luck in using Active Directory (2003) as the directory service with an Apple Mail Server? We're testing it out, but we're unable to enable mail services for users on teh Mac server.
If anyone has tried this and can offer up some tips, I'd be grateful!
    Dell Latitude D620   Other OS

    Me too!
I also discovered that Mac users who have valid accounts in AD 2003 can't have an email account in WGM enabled for them (WGM acts like its enabling email but then reverts back to "disabled"). I assume the account must be configured in the Active Directory Users and Groups admin tool before it can be enabled in WGM on the OS X email server, but I havent had any luck getting it to work yet.

  • NAC, OOB wireless and Active directory

    Hello.
Here we need to set up Network Access with OOB wireless and authentication via Active Directory. I have followed this guide but still can't get it work.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6128/products_configuration_example09186a0080a138cc.shtml
    In my scenario:
    CAM NAC: 192.168.7.100
    CAS NAC: 192.168.9.9
    WLC 5508: 192.169.9.2
AD and DHCP servers: 192.168.7.2 and 192.168.8.2
    APs and clients range: 192.168.9.0/23
when i Check "Radius Server Overwrite interface" and select NAT state: SNMP NAC on the following images....
I try to navegate and I get the Login default page that I already configured asking me for credentials, I type them but it get stucks there. I have already configured everything showed on the guide posted above. Do I need to do something else that is not explicitly explained in the guide?
    Thanks in advance.

I just tried without "Radius Server Overwrite interface" checked and got the same results. WLAN is mapped with interface managment
AP group is the default one.
    Here are the CAM logs
On the NPS windows server 2008 cant see any log about this connection. Please give me some advices.
    Thanks in advance.
