OS X Snow Leopard Installation

I currently am using a 5th generation iMac (with isight) with Mac OS X v10.4.11 and just recently purchased the disk to install Snow Leopard onto my machine. I inserted the disk and restarted my computer, selected a language and then an error message popped up, saying that Snow Leopard couldn't be installed because their wasn't enough RAM. My Mac has 512 MB of RAM (What I believed to be 1GB) and Snow Leopard only requires 1GB. If I purchase additional RAM will Snow Leopard be able to install? Or is there a way to install it with my current amount of RAM? Thanks!

Yes, you just need more RAM. However, were I you I would install the maximum amount your model supports which is 4 GBs (however, only 3 GBs will be accessible to the system.)

You need to have the disc in order to create disk image of snow leopard installer disc. What did your machine ship with? If something later than SL, then why? If earlier, then you can buy the SL installer disc and make the disk image.

Snow Leopard installation on Mac Mini has failed

Does anyone know whether Snow Leopard checks what hard disk is installed in order to satisfy installation requirements as I've fitted an SSD Hard Disk Drive in my Macintel Mac Mini and installing Snow Leopard has failed (no longer boots into any Operating System previous nor upgraded. (Mac OS X 10.5.8 previously installed)).

It may not have anything to do with a new drive installation. Snow Leopard has just "bricked" my Intel Mac Mini hard drive - the original one. The first attempt at installation failed, so I tried an erase and instal. It seemed to work - briefly but when I tried to restore apps and settings from a Time Machine back-up it "hung" with only one minute of restoration to go. Now the HD appears to have failed, since it is unable to find any system folder and booting up via the Snow Leopard disc and bringing up the disc utility shows a greyed-out HD drive.
Some people on the MacBook Pro forum report a similar problem with the hard drive after Snow Leopard installation.

Snow Leopard Installation Disk Ejects - won't install

A brand new Snow Leopard Installation disk would not be read in a MacBook Pro 15" so I just thought I'd share my solution.
This installation disk was readable on every Mac that I tried except the one that I wanted to install Snow Leopard onto, which, by the way, could read other CDs and DVDs.
I ran TechTool just to eliminate any problem it may be able to handle.
The solution was to clean the DVD with a little dish soap and water and to blot it dry with a lint-free cloth. Once I was sure that the disk was totally dry I attempted the installation again and it worked.

Hans, will that Pioneer cause problems with this Tiger app? One comment I read on one forum said that non-Apple disk drives have to be disabled to run Tiger, so I wonder if that would solve this problem. I appreciate all the time you've given me to help solve this problem. Like most projects, a lot more is involved that appears at first.

De-authorize Snow Leopard installation

I'm selling my old MacBook Pro, and I have a licensed copy of Snow Leopard on it. I'd like to de-authorize it prior to selling. My Snow Leopard installation CD is a 5-copy (family) version. How do I gain the authorization back? Thanks in advance.

There is no "authorization", per se. Since you have a family pack and hence can't provide a copy of SL to the new owner with the MacBook, you'll want to use the system installation disks that came with the MBP to erase the drive (highly recommended anyway, and I'd suggest going to the Security Options in Disk Utility and choosing the "Zero Out Data" option when you erase the drive) and reinstalling the original OS version.

Snow Leopard Installation problems

What can I do if the Snow Leopard installation isn't completed, returning message " Installer couldn't replace system documents"?
I tried once, and system returned me the message above. So I restarted and tried installation again, but first I formatted the HD with the Mac os x Journaled file system. the I retried, but the installation didn't go to an end, returning the same message.
I'm stucked with a 2009 Macbook Pro. Before I tried installation, suddenly stopped working, booting it with no success, ending with a white wide screen.
Any ideas?

Oh, it was the +File Open+ dialog, not a web browser window, is that correct?
Since you installed Snow Leopard as an upgrade over your existing system, and logged in to your existing user account, you may have had a +Login Item+ (processes that start and run at login) that needs to use "Events.app" (or maybe Events.app itself was the Login Item).
If you log out and log in, that message should pop up again, if it is related to a Login Item.
To see your Login Items, go to System Preferences Accounts pane +Login Items+ tab. The list you see are your Login Items. If you see anything that you no longer need, you should remove it. Look for something that may be related to this "Events.app" process.

Mac OX Snow Leopard installation from DVD failed

I tried to install the new OS Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3 (bought today) on my iMac. But is constantly failed (message: installation failed) and now it's in a loop where I can't get out. Because the only action there is is to try it again. What should I do?

What specific iMac model do you have? Does it meet these requirements?
Snow Leopard General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
1GB of memory
5GB of available disk space
DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
To shut down the computer press and hold in the Power button until the computer shuts off. When you restart the computer you can eject the DVD as follows:
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
4. Press COMMAND-E.
5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
/usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
If you are currently running Leopard and it's still working then do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If all is OK then reboot from your Snow Leopard DVD and try the installation again.
BTW, I encourage you to make a cloned backup of your current working system before trying to upgrade.

• IMPORTANT: As with any upgrade, you need to confirm compatibility of all your applications and drivers with Snow Leopard before you upgrade. Some major items of note:
Snow Leopard only ships with Java 1.6, so any applications built with Java must include support for 1.6 or the application will fail. Applications that currently use Java and are reported not to work include (but are by no means limited to) SPSS, ClamXav and Cyberduck.
Snow Leopard has severely restricted or in many cases eliminated the use of Input Managers, so applications that depended on those will fail. Logitech's mouse drivers appear to fall into this category.
Many applications that are or include menu bar components will fail if they depend on Unsanity's Menu Extra Enabler or the open-source Menu Cracker.

Reports on that site are unofficial but may be useful.
• Snow Leopard no longer includes AppleTalk, so you will no longer be able to use any AppleTalk-only printers or other devices.
• Safari by default will launch in 64-bit mode on those systems that support 64-bit processing (which includes all Macs with Intel Core 2 Duo or Xeon processor). If you have Safari plug-ins that are not working, quit Safari, Get Info on the Safari application, and select "Open in 32-bit mode" and relaunch Safari.
• QuickTime Player X has some ability to trim and convert media, but no longer includes many of the former options available in QuickTime Pro. QuickTime 7 Player is available as an optional installation for those who still need the additional Pro features. If you have QuickTime 7 Pro installed in Leopard and are upgrading, the Snow Leopard installer should install QuickTime 7 Player automatically and preserve your Pro key. Apple has made no mention of a Pro version of QuickTime X.
• The Snow Leopard installer reportedly removes the Script subfolders from /Library/Scripts/, so if you are upgrading Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, before performing the upgrade make a backup of the Address Book Scripts, Basics, Finder Scripts, Info Scripts, Internet Services, and Navigation Scripts subfolders and then copy them back to /Library/Scripts/ after installing the update.

Mac-Windows-Connection failes after Snow Leopard Installation

I am dealing with 4 PCs at home – an IMac, a MacBookPro, a Dell Dimension and a Dell Precision Workstation. Before I installed Snow Leopard I could connect easily from my Macs to my PC via “Connect with Server” and the “sudo pico /etc/hosts” hint to rename my Windows-PC to real names (e.g. Dimension and Precision). After the installation I am prompted in OS X to give my account name and password again! And, of course, I don’t work anymore (wrong user name or password error). Because I put those information in long ago, I am not quite sure if I am putting the wrong Name/Password info in or if something happened during the Snow Leopard installation. I was never quite sure if “Name” meant the name of my Windows account I want to log into, or my Mac user name or a combination of both or the Server /Name thing, e.g. Dimension\Name. Just for info: My Windows-PCs can still connect without a problem to both Macs.
Any help is appreciated what information exactly to put in that **** Name/Password box that appears if I want to connect to a Windows-PC from my Mac. Or what else could have happened during the Snow Leopard installation that cut of the former available ability to connect to my Windows-PC from OS X.

I was able to see the other Windows XP computer and begin to connect. I was then presented with a login screen. I tried using the usual user name and password - no luck. I then formatted the user name as as follows:
user name: computer name\user name
password: as normal
And it worked. Specifically in my case:
user: cwy-pln2152\administrator
password: planning
This is what worked for me your mileage may vary.

Snow Leopard Installer doesn't detect my hard drive?! help!

After my earlier post, where my replacement 320gig hard drive is incorrectly (not GUID) partitioned, I backed everything up, made a time machine copy just to be safe, and set about formatting the entire drive, doing a fresh install, and then updating via one of my back ups etc.
However, when I tried restarting from the CDRom, it just hung on the Apple grey splash screen for about 10 minutes with nothing happening, I restarted and held one 'ALT' the two options were my hard drive and the Snow Leopard install disk - I selected the install disk and after short while I was presented with the installer.
The installer displayed no hard drive, nor did the disk utility within' the installer, I can't think what the problem could be, as, as soon as I ejected the installer cd, I booted straight back into my normal system (which I am writing this on now).
I really am stumped as what to do next, comments, suggestions and observations welcome :-D

I tried that and the both disk's pass the verification, the problem is the installer detecting my hard drive.
When i'm running 10.5 and try to install from the SL Disk it picks up the hard drive (but says it cannot install to this volume, use disk utility etc) - its when I restart and enter the installer via the splash menu, it fails to pick up my hard drive.
I cant see any other way of partitioning my drive to the required GUID, even when I made a seperate 20gig partition, it remains as Mac OSX Journaled on the same drive thats partition scheme is 'Apple Partition Map'.
Bootcamp will not help me either, I thought of creating a seperate partition and installing it to that, then reformatting the rest of the drive from within' SL, but Bootcamp says that it cannot modify the 'startup disk' and says it requires reformatting.
I really am stumped as to what to do next, I can't understand why the installer picks up the hard drive whilst its running, but when its in the installer it doesn't

Trouble with HP Photosmart 2710 after Snow Leopard installation

I recently upgraded my Mac desktop and laptop to Snow Leopard. After installing this on the Mac I was unable to scan so I re-installed HP software. This solved the scanning issue but now I can't print, getting a message saying "Software not fully installed". I re-installed from disk and then tried again as a download but still have same problem.
On the Laptop, (also upgraded to Snow Leopard) I made no changes to the printer installation and I can still print but I can't scan. Help please!

Try removing the printer from the list first, then reinstall the drivers.

Mac Mini core solo 1.5gb snow leopard installation problem.

Before I tried to install snow leopard I was in the middle of using the restore discs and before I was thinking about it I just turned the computer off when it asked for disc 2. Now I cannot do anything with this computer, turning it on goes to the installation menu and It just prompts for the second disc which I do not have. All my menus are disabled such as disc utility and can't start a fresh install. Also when I turn the computer on and hold the alt key down with a usb keyboard I do not get the option of selecting the snow leopard disc when the option of the hard drives come up. It just ejects the discs. Also tried holding down the C key to boot from dvd and no luck. Any way to get around this or another command to try?

Sounds like your optical drive went out. Either get it fixed or use an external USB CD/DVD drive. You might try another disc first to eliminate a problem on your install disc. Sometimes scratches and finger prints on a disc can cause problems.

Snow Leopard Installer does not recognize Hard drive in disk utility.

I first at the suggestion of apple technicians because of other problems erased and partitioned hard drive. Now when I go to reinstall Snow Leopard it does not recognize the Macintosh Hard Drive, not even in disk utility. Any help will be greatly appreciate.

To make sure we understand everything correctly, you are saying that when you start up from the Snow Leopard DVD & run its copy of Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, it shows only the DVD installer disc itself in the list on the left of Disk Utility's window? There is nothing else there?
Also, what are you booted from when you try to make an image of the installer DVD, the DVD itself or something else? Are you using Disk Utility or something else to make the image?
This seems very weird for sure. If you were running from some hard disk copy of the OS, I would suspect that its copy of Disk Utility or some OS support file was corrupted, but if you are doing this from the DVD that is extremely unlikely unless the DVD itself is physically damaged.
Apart from that, pretty much the only thing left is a damaged hard drive or other hardware failure in your Mac.

Snow Leopard Installer Hanging- what to do with a grey screen?

I'm re-installing Snow Leopard on a Mac Pro. Tried re-installing the OS without booting up from the disc, and after about 10 minutes the entire "installing" window disappeared, leaving me in limbo until I forced a reboot from the disc.
I ran Disk Utility and repaired the startup disk. Now I'm trying to install the OS from the DVD, and after the progress bar finished, I have a grey screen with cursor. For 35 minutes and counting.
Time to panic? How do I get out of the grey screen? Does this mean the install has failed?

I called Apple tech support, and they said that the grey screen was likely caused by the system failing to boot up properly after the installation was completed, which meant there was probably no danger from just rebooting (which I think was my only option anyway at that point).
I rebooted, and it looks like the installation took just fine. Thanks for your time.

How can I get Snow Leopard installation from Greece?

Hi all,
I have a Macbook 4.1 13"inch (2008) currently running OS X 10.5. I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard but the problem is that I cannot find anywhere in Greece to buy the installation disk. There is no greek Apple store, the rest of Apple stores do not ship to Greece. I really to need to buy the upgrade but I cannot find a way to accomplish.

If your local dealers no longer have copies, then unless you have a friend or relative in a country that has an Apple Store who could buy a copy for you, you'll need to look for private sellers.
