OS X Tiger and WPA Encryption

Good morning all
I've evently taken the plunge and secured my home wireless network (iMac G5 20" plus two Wintel laptops... yes... I know!)
I went the route of WPA encryption with a 63 digit password. The laptops have handled the change perfectly, successfully storing the pass key and logging in automatically to the network automatically each time. My Mac, however, seems to be having two small issues:
1. I have to login to the connection manually after each startup (not a major hassle as I usually keep the Mac on all the time)
2. (and this adds a hassle factor into 1...) - I have to manually enter my WPA password each time, even though the 'remember pass key in keychain' option is selected. Therefore I have to keep the key stored unencrypted eleswhere in the Mac.
Connection works perfectly with no issues once connected.
Equipment:
Router - Belkin F5D7633UK4A
Mac adapter - Airport Extreme card (built-in)
System - 10.4.4 (updated to 10.4.5 this moring with no issues but the problem above still remains)
Connection - 1Mb ADSL
Anyone able to offer any guidance? Many thanks in advance
Philip

Phillip:- I don't have an answer for you but others might. Can you supply some more information? The fact that the two Windows machines can connect suggests that the router is taking your configs correctly into it's wireless transceiver so one would conclude it is the iMac and or it's card.
Just where are you being asked to login each time? Some ISPs require such but the password asked for is the password they match with the username to satisfy themselves you have an account with them. They don't ask for the WPA passphrase, as that is the requirement of the wireless front end of the 'router', which it needs to be sure you(in fact the machine with the client card) aren't your nextdoor neighbour piggybacking on you phoneline connection which of course is through the router which is addressed by the transceiver. I have been trying to get an HP printer to work wirelessly and that has involved entering my 62 character phrase many times. Not easy. Could I suggest that you ensure that the client card, the airport extreme card, is correctly configured, in effect re configure it. Maybe reset the lot, router and clients. I found a way to read in clear the passphrase living in my wireless gateway I don't know if you could do the same with the Belkin. It is possible that the devices that work have a passphrase that is very close to but not identical with that you have on the client. In effect that you spelt it wrongly but consistently on router and laptops yet rightly but inconsistently on the Mac. However that thesis should mean a failure to send/receive traffic as the 'pool' of characters provided by the passphrase would be different though that would evidence itself only on a statistical basis over a period of time.

  • PLEASE HELP! Problems with Cisco WLAN and WPA encryption

I checked the threads and didn't see this posted.  I have a Cisco WLAN card in my T42_2373_C88.  It's a very unfortunate thing that this wireless LAN card/wireless config. utitlity doesn't support WPA encryption.  I'm not entirely sure that it's the problem with the WLAN card, and the reason for this is that I initially set up a network through the Windows config. utility bypassing the IBM utility (which I can no longer do).  I wasn't actually able to connect to my local network until I completely removed the profile for my home network in the access connections, only then was I able to connect (WPA-PSK (TKIP)).  I saw some drivers available for my make and model on the lenovo.com driver site.  I downloaded the drivers and went through device manager specifying the folder where the drivers were located and the drivers were not recognized by windows as valid drivers.  Unless specifically told otherwise, I don't want to manually override and load these drivers.  This is a business machine, and this specific wireless function is VERY critical.
    Thanks

try using URLConnection instead of HTTPConnection.

  • Airport (not extreme) and WPA encryption with G4 Titanium.

I just purchased the Linksys WRT150N router and basically it works great-with 3/4 of my Macs. However, my 'old' G4 TI 550 with an airport card refuses to work with the WPA Personal security. It either says this network does not support this encryption, or there was an error joining the network. I've updated to OS 10.4.10.
Apple says that this card should work fine with WPA. I've seen talk of "Airport" software, but in the OSX app folder I only have Airport Admin and Airport set up-(there is an app called Airport in the OS 9 folder--and this Arpt card was first installed under sys 9). My software updater doesn't show any recent Airport upgrades so I don't know where I am with that. The TI works fine with the router w/out any security ;-( so that's what I'm doing currently.
    Ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

Checked the WPA2 idea--definitely using WPA (not 2) Personal. Actually it won't connect thru WEP either.
(Here's another factoid about this machine... its ethernet port got fried in a lightning storm years ago-which actually forced the purchase of the airport card rather than buying a new motherboard)
    What else?
    thanks

Problem connecting wirelessly from iMac to NETGEAR router, get invalid password message with WPA and WPA-2 encryption in place but if I remove them, so no security, can connect without a problem. Help!!

Thank you for your suggestion but I have already had a couple of phone sessions with NETGEAR support and they don't see any problems with the router settings etc. They referred me to Apple support, who helped me discover that it is possible to communicate with the router but only if I turn off the encryption/security software, which I don't want to do. The frustrating thing is that I can connect wirelessly from a laptop running Windows 7 and two Anroid smart phones, with WPA-2 in place, without a problem. Do you have any other ideas?

  • PB 10.4.4 + Dlink 624 (wireless) don't like WPA encryption

    Hi all,
my PB and my wife's iBook both cannot lock on to the airport signal from our DLink 624 WITH WPA encryption.
everything runs smoothly with the safety features disabled, but just gives me a "couldn't log on to the .... network" message and has no signal bars in the menu bar monitor as soon as I turn it back on.
this is something that worked fine on both machines before we upgraded to Tiger (the problem has been there since 10.4.1), DLink (of course..) says it's something to do with X..
    any ideas ?
thanks, for your help, let me know if you need more info on my settings, etc,
    Benny

Yes I read that the first time. I just don't follow your logic. Why could it not be a problem of authentication on the laptop? If the router is spending time repeating things for my laptop, and the compliance is not valid in the laptop, is that not an airport issue?
Also, as I stated before, how is it that others are having the same problms with other different routers?

  • Coexistance WEP and WPA

I try to configure 2 ssid's for 1131 autonomous AP. One SSID with open authentication and WEP encryption and the other SSID using WPA. The "WEP-SSID" is in guest-mode. So i can see the "WEP-SSID" in the list of available W-Lans on a notebook but WPA protected and not WEP protected. An other issue is the unability to get a IP address from a DHCP server for wireless stations using the "WEP-SSID"-network. Any ideas for these behavior ?

Make sure the DHCP server is in the same subnet as wireless client. If it is in the different subnet, ensure that reachability is there between these devices. Send me the debug ip dhcp enable command and send me the debug output.

  • How to share internet by wifi using wpa encryption or mac adress filtering ?

Hello, (and sorry for my English)
How can I share internet (from ethernet) to wifi, with a minimum of security : wpa encryption, mac adress filtering or hidden ssid ?
    Thanks,
    Vicx

If I understand your question, Internet Sharing doesn't support WPA, only WEP, which is essentially worthless.

  • Atheors 5005 Wlan card unable to connect to WPA encrypted AP

Thought I'd post this in anew thread too..
I'm having trouble connecting to a wpa encrypted access point using my girlfriends Satelite pro L20/ Winxp
Windows XP will only let me choose either 'disabled' or 'WEP' in the 'association' tab of the adavnced section of Wireless connection properties.
I've downloaded the atheros 5005g drivers (v 4.0.0.14001) and although I can find the access point, and set up the encryption as WPA and enter the correct passphrase,
the device will not connect to my access point.
I've managed to get connected with my macbook pro and my toshiba tecra m9 14c in a matter of seconds...
Anyone have a clue what i can do to get this working?!

    Hey THANK YOU JABA!
That Hotfix finally did the job. But how many hoops do Microsoft want you to jump through to get the download? (rhetorical question)
First of all I tried to download the .exe to my mac, then copy it to the Satellite Pro and run it.
That didn't work coz the Microsoft validator didn't recognize macosx as theirs.
Then tried it with a hard wired router to the Satellite Pro but the MS validator failed on that - it seemed to think that the OS wasn't legit!
So in frustration, I made up a validation key of "buy amac" which caused the Microsoft website to install some activex software which then generated a key for me to copy and paste to the download site, which then let me download the kb893357 hotfix, which I then had to run and then restart the machine.
All of a sudden the Satellite Pro can see that ours and many of our neighbours access points have both WPA and WPA2 encryption AND after some fiddling about with the advanced tab of the wireless network connection properties, we get an IP address from the router and a secure wireless route to the outside world..WEYHEY!!!
9 hours of my time and a pointless shopping trip to change a Windows machine from WEP to WPA..
On the mac? Nearly 9 seconds... coz I spelt the passcode wrong first time!
I'll post another thread about the toshiba/ windows/ smartdiary problem in a suitable category and prey that you monitor that part of the forum too Jaba!
    Thanks again!

  • Is two networks with different WEP/WPA encryptions possible?

Hello I have the wireless wrh54g in my desktop pc using the WPA encryption and I have a laptop which can only accept WEP. How can I add another network in the Preferred Networks with the WEP encryption to accommodate my laptop? Please advise. Thanks. Menk

The wireless security settings only apply to wireless links to the router, i.e. wireless computers or other wireless devices. Through these wireless links those devices connect to the LAN and through the router to the internet.
The wired ports on the router connect to the same LAN. Wired computers connect through the LAN and the router to the internet. There are no specific security settings for those wired ports. However has physical access to the router and those ports has access to the LAN. The wireless security settings have nothing to do with the wired ports. For instance, you could connect a wired network printer to one of the ports. You can also connect a desktop with a ethernet card to one of the ports. The desktop and a laptop connected wireless to the router can use the network printer. Both can also access the internet through the router.

  • Palm Wi-Fi card and WPA

Hello all,  I run WPA encryption on my home LAN, and cannot get my Tungsten E2 to connect, My question is: Is there any firmware updates for the Palm Wi-Fi card or palm software that will enable WPA support for my E2.  Also WEP is not an option.
    Thanks

As far as I know Palm's Wifi card when used in a PalmOS device does not support WPA.
There was an update quite a while ago to add WPA capability to TX (which has built-in WiFi) but that's where it stops.

  • WPA Encryption on a MAC

I am trying to configure my mother's wireless Linksys network with WPA encryption on a Mac OS X laptop.  Now I have done this in Windows and it is a pretty simple process; however I cannot seem to locate where on the MAC OS I am supposed to enter the key generated by the web server on the Linksys router.  There is no "airport base station", I guess because I am not using the Mac brand router.  So I can't go there to configure the settings. I have looked in applications-->utilities and cannot find anything in there that helps me.
Can someone give me a hint of what to do here?

It would be better to call macintosh for the concern. Ask assistance from them on how to look for the wireless networks on mac pc.Look for your wireless network ,connect to it and type the network key.For mac pc,usually you have to type first the $ sign before the network key.If it won't work, then just type network  key

  • Network Unsecured after switching to WPA Encryption

I switched by network from WEP to WPA encryption to make it more secure. (My router cannot do the WPA2 encryption.) After doing that, my network now shows up as unsecured. I don't need to enter a password. What did I do wrong? Do I have to go back to WEP?
    Solved!

If that's a Verizon FiOS router, and it's so old it doesn't do WPA2, then you should take advantage of their free upgrade.

In general if you clicked the button for wpa then it should have taken you to a screen where you were able to enter a new key.
    Did it do that?

  • 7920 - Firmware Version that support WEP, LEAP and WPA

    Hi Guys,
My Customer have the CallManager version 4.1.3. He have the IP Phone 7920 and need use WEP, LEAP and WPA. Anybody tell me if version cmterm_7920.4.0-03-02 support this protocolos?
    Thank You,
    Wilson

LEAP uses WEP 40 or 128 bit encryption
    WPA (or WPA-PSK) uses TKIP
You can only define one encryption type per radio interface so that is why both won't work simultaneously...
With multiple vlans setup, you can now assign encryption on a per vlan/ssid basis.

  • WEP vs. WPA encryption

Today I received a wifi card for my Tungsten E2.  I downloaded and installed the drivers and it works great - with an unsecured network.  My home network is set up with WPA encryption and I can't find anywhere that it is supported.  The only option I have for encryption is WEP.  Do I need to change my encryption settings to WEP in order to connect to my home network?  I disabled the security on the router to test the connection and it worked - so I am sure I'll be able to connect to a free wifi hotspot.  Thanks in advance for the help!

Although this appears to be an old thread I can add something to the fray for anyone else finding this in a search.  I would suggest you go get a book called The Book of Wireless by John Ross.  Everything you could possibly want to know about setting up and using wireless networks is in here.  I would suggest you use the TOC and Index to find what you want as it is about 300 pages in length.  After perusing this book I was easily able to setup a fairly secure network using my Palm TlX WiFi capability.

  • Can I run Tiger and Leopard on the same computer

    Hi folks.
I've been meaning to install Leopard for ages but have never got round to it (I bought the retail box when it first came out). I have upgraded my RAM to 2GB and my hard drive to 320GB with no problems.
My upgraded hard drive has been partitioned into 2 equal parts of 160GB. These appear on desktop as Mackintosh HD1 and HD2. HD1 is the disk with all my files, music, OS etc and HD2 is empty
I have 2 bootable clones of my present system - one is on a 160GB external and the other is the original 80GB HD that I replaced.
My question is this - can I install Leopard on to my 160GB external HD, then clone it on to the empty HD2. If I do this would I be able to run both Tiger and Leopard on the same Macbook?
Is there any problems with this plan? Would I be able to transfer between the 2 OS and how do I install Leopard on the external drive. Is it just a case of inserting the Leopard DVD and choose the external drive as the target?
    As usual thanks in advance

    # Original Tiger in the internal HD, New Leopard in the external HD.
    # New Leopard in the internal, Legacy cloned Tiger in the external.
    # Split internal, one partition with Tiger, another with Leopard.
Leopard is backwardly compatible with older Macs, just make sure yours fulfills the minimum system requirements, both use the same filesystem format, so each can see the other. You can't run both at the same time, unless you purchase the server version of Leopard and run it virtualized. 99.9% of Firewire external HD's are bootable, some USB's are bootable but have to test first. You can choose which system to boot from by pressing the Option key at boot time, before the chime. Just make sure the external HDD is plugged in and turned on if that's where you want to boot from.
When I migrated my PBG4 from Panther to Tiger, got an external FW HDD, cloned Panther onto it, upgraded using Archive and Install, cleaned up, customized and tested it. When I was satisfied all was ok, cloned the original Panther onto another partition of the external HDD, wiped and tested for failure the internal HDD, then cloned the known good and tested Tiger into it. Only thing that died along the way was my old and ancient Photoshop v2.x, that refused to run on Tiger.
