OS X Tiger freezes.

For the last several days, my OS X has been freezing with different programs. It locks up and I have to manually restart. It is becoming a pain. Any ideas on what I can do?
Thank you.

Start with some basics as mentioned here:

  • Tiger freezes when screensaver runs or any time during the work

    Hello everyone!
After I've connected LaCie external hard-drive, Tiger freezes every time screensaver runs. Sometimes it happens at any point during the work without any reason. I can move the mouse (when screensaver is on, though, after I moved the mouse the screen would go blank). LaCie works great and I don't think the problem is in it.
Also, right before this started I'd installed the Mac OS X 10.4.6 update. May be that is the reason. I don't know. I did what is in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=487116
In particular, I re-installed Mac OS X 10.4.6 combo update - it won't work. I've done permissions repairment, disk repairment, etc. Disk didn't require any repairments.
I tried disconnecting LaCie it won't help as well. What else might be done before I re-install Mac OS X itself (which I really don't want to do).

Since you've restarted and hard reset, the next step is to restore it.  Make sure you have it backed up via iTunes and then setup as new.

  • Tiger freezing on shutdown/USB issue?

    Hi,
I am running Tiger 10.4.6 on an iMac g3 4000mhz with 640mb ram. Suddenly, the iMac freezes on shutdown though the mouse pointer is on screen and can be moved. The only way to get the machine back on is to switch the unit off.
Another problem which could be linked is that my LaCie external USB drive does not mount on startup. When I run System Profile of disk utility, it takes and age to find it, and sees the drive (even though it's not mounted) and then does mount the volume.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be with this?
    Thanks,
    James

    Hi jameseyre1 and everyone!
I do have the similar problem, and no solution yet. After I've connected LaCie external hard-drive, Tiger freezes every time screensaver runs. Sometimes it happens at any point during the work without any reason. I can move the mouse just like you do (not when screensaver is on, though)
LaCie mounted perfectly and works just great and it might be a coincedence. Anyway, maybe these two problems are related - we will be greatful for any thoughts. Thanx.

  • After upgrading to Tiger, freeze after waking from sleep on PM G4

My experience with Tiger in the past week as not been great. The reason I upgraded was to get iSync 2.1, so that my Moto E815 phone could be sync'd with my OSX AddresBook and iCal. This wasn't possible with the latest version of Panther.
So, I upgraded to Tiger 10.4.3, and now my G4 freezes immediately after waking from sleep. After pressing the 'return' key to wake the computer, the G4 sends a signal to wake the monitor, but on top of the screen saver is a black text box which states there was a problem I must press (and hold) the power button to restart the Mac. It's written in four languages.
When I installed Tiger, I used the 'archive' option.
My computer is a bit of a FrankenMac: Originally a G4/350 with AGP, upgraded with a Sonnet 1GHz G4 processor card, 1.12GB RAM, a 160GB HDD, an nVidia GeForce3 64MB AGP video card, Samsung DVD/CR-RW drive (Patchburn3) and a Belkin PCI card with 2 additional Firewire ports and 3 additional USB 2.0 ports. When I performed the upgrade, I had the keyboard and mouse plugged into the case USB 1.1 ports, a Logitech Notebook Pro USB camera plugged into the other case USB 1.1 port, and a D-Link BT120 USB->BT adapter plugged into one of the three USB 2.0 ports on the Belkin PCI card.
When I check the Console logs after the rebooting, I see a kernal panic in the panic.log. Apple has received this a number of times from me in the past week as I keep sending them 'talkback' logs after the fact.
I also see an error in the system.log which may reveal what is going on:

I suspect the problem where the USB devices are started, because I had that Bluetooth adapter plugged in at the time of the upgrade. I'm speaking of the lines in the log which start with 'USBF'. The keyboard and mouse are useless when the black screen shows up after waking from sleep.
I've tried some of the suggestions I've found for the iBook 'wake from sleep' postings on macfixit.com and here - resetting NVRAM and removing a few of the .plist files. This didn't seem to help.
I would greatly appreciate help in resolving this issue. I've been a Mac owner since the original Macintosh (it's still in my house) and am frustrated that this is the first problem I've encountered.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks. In fact I had bought a new keyboard and mouse (Macally) and sure enough, if I unplug it before it reboots, the CD drive door stays closed and I can boot from a CD! I did not try any of the other stuff. Is there any way to get it to stop this? Why does a USB peripheral cause the CD to eject anyway? Would love to know!

  • G4/400 Tiger freeze when resizing a window.

    Hello all,
I'm helping a friend move from System 8 to Tiger on his G4/400 "Sawtooth" model. The machine is somewhat usable but it is awfully touchy and the keyboard and mouse freeze seemingly at random. However if I open a Finder window, and resize it, it will happen pretty much every time.
I suspected the video card or driver, and he's willing to upgrade the card, but I haven't yet seen anything on these forums or elsewhere to suggest that a Rage 128 should be a problem. I don't think he had such issues with System 8, but I'm not sure.
I've tried most of the standard checks: hardware test, disk utility, etc. though I need to repeat them with the added RAM out.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks

Did you update the firmware (to Boot ROM version 4.2.8) before installing Tiger? See Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
Did you use a universal install CD or a CD from another Mac model?
OS X is really "picky" about the "quality" of RAM. Many RAM modules that operate OK in classic OS do not operate OK in OS X. How much RAM is installed & does it all show up in the About This Mac/Apple System Profiler when you boot in Tiger? Check with the added RAM out.

  • OSX Tiger Freezing and Quiting on me

    Hello...
My operating system is acting a bit strange. It temporarily is freezing up on me when I minimize a window or enlarge windows. It is also having difficulty with my mighty mouse's scroll button. When I am using AIM and I scroll using the top scroll button, it seems to freeze up AIM and quit it. The main issue I'm having and is concerning me a great deal is that every so often the whole operating system freezes and the computer tower starts up it's fans very loud and a red light comes on inside the case. I have to manually shut down the computer and restart it. When the desktop reappears, it has a window saying that OSX encountered a problem and had to be shut down... or something to that effect. I have suspected that Firefox is the main problem when this happens.... Can another explain these problems to me? Any suggestions on how to fix them? Thank you
G5 Dual Core OSX Tiger   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

What model Mac do you have? Your settings indicate a G-5 Dual Core. There is not such computer. If it is a G-5 I suspect you have an overheating problem. that is the only thing I know of that would cause the red light to come on inside the case.
Have you checked to make sure all the cooling vents are free of dust and debris? HAve you moved the computer recently? Have you changed the air flow to it by adding some new furniture or anything?

  • Tiger Freezing

I've been using my iBook G4 since June, 2004, and never had any problems with the laptop freezing until I upgraded to Tiger OS X 10.4.4.
I have Tiger installed on an external HD. I haven't used Tiger that much yet. The biggest problem I've noticed is with iTunes, which keeps freezing. I can't force quit, and do anything at all, except restart the computer with Apple/Control Power Button.
This has happened many times. When I run OS X 10.3.9, I have no problems with the computer freezing. When applications freeze, I have always been able to Force Quit, then restart the application with no problems.
I've also had problems with Webstractor 1.5.3 and the newest version of Firefox 1.5rc.1, both also causing the laptop to completely freeze.
Has anyone else encountered this same problem? Is there a fix? Thanks.

"...i don't know the real difference between 'zero' and 'erase'?
"Erase" simply deletes the drive directory. "Zero" writes zeros over the entire drive obliterating any information written to the drive.
"...when i tried to install tiger for the second time, i chose the option'erase and install'..."
Try it again but after choosing "Erase and Install, click on the "Options" tab and select the "Write zeros to drive" option.
The advantage is that when you have an install go "weewah", there is a lot of files written to the drive. Sometimes the installer will simply use the "existing" files rather than actually erase them and write new ones. This is why problems can remain, even after repeated re-installs. It's likely that something went wrong with your first install on the brand new drive.
Actually,it would be best, at this point, to launch Disk Utility from the install disk. Use that to delete any existing partitions on your drive (there should only be one). Then, create a new partition and format it using the "Mac OSX Journaled" format. Then proceed with a "fresh" installation.

  • Tiger freezes frequently...

It seems like sometimes when I boot up my computer, it will bring me to the desktop with everything displayed, even the cursor, but it will be locked up occasionally, to where I can't even turn it off with the power button (I have to press reset). Everything is frozen, and I've tried getting responses from both the keyboard and mouse when it freezes, but I usually get nothing. I find that it freezes after a boot, after something copies, or after I plug a flash drive in. It's happened with Panther as well. Could it have something to do with the keyboard and mouse (they're old, I think from an Apple II, or at least that's what my computer says). I've installed updates, etc but still it freezes. Could it also be the hard drive and not the software (the hard drive is pretty old). I doubt it, though, because my experience is that the hard drive either quits and doesn't work at all or works perfectly. This is a fresh install with Tiger, and it did it with my newly installed Panther version as well.
    Help!
    Thanks.

Check to make sure that all 512mB is showing up in "About this mac" if it is less than 512 select "More info" to check which slots are under-reporting.
Also try running "Remember" from here:
    http://www.kelleycomputing.net:16080/rember/
Select ALL / Infinite loops / Quit all applications / Quit Finder.

  • OS X Tiger freezing constantly

I tried installing OS X Tiger on my wife's older G4 last year, even though it only has a 350 MHz processor and about 500 MB of RAM. It was running just a bit slow, but fine, until a few weeks ago. Now it's started freezing up repeatedly, sometimes every few minutes, whenever she's in OS X.
We can't think of anything new or different she may have done or installed.
It doesn't seem to matter what software or task she's running: I've seen it freeze in Word, Outlook, Quark, and the Finder.
The computer boots up in OS 9.2.2 and runs fine from there, no crashes. So I'm not inclined to suspect bad RAM... unless Tiger uses the same RAM in a completely different way that might somehow invoke the crash.
We've repaired permissions and run maintenance scripts repeatedly, but it doesn't seem to fix it.
We created a new User Account, but that also apparently freezes, so it doesn't seem to be a corrupt account.
I haven't yet started attempting all the more time-consuming tests, like disk repair, trying to find corrupt fonts, and so on, since I'm not sure I'm even heading down the right path, and don't want to spend hours going off in the wrong direction.
Any ideas what the next step ought to be to trouble-shoot this? Or any idea what the problem could be from that description?

There's currently about a GB of free space on the startup drive. I could probably free up more if that would help. I don't think that has changed much since we first installed Tiger on it though. There's a second internal drive with a lot more space for virtual RAM and so on.
The drive is getting pretty old. If I could confirm that would fix the problem it would be worth getting a newer, bigger drive rather than buying a whole new computer. (She's not a power user, so the older computer is great, when it's not freezing up!) Is there a way to test if the drive itself is going bad? DU Verify Disk didn't show any problems.
As far as the RAM, I can swap out all of her RAM for the RAM from my other, working G4 temporarily to see if that fixes it.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Safari 3.2.1 (Tiger) Freezes w/OS 10.4.11

I can't seem to find anyone with this issue on the forum, but my safari once launched is fine, but when i try to navigate via bookmarks or typed in links, safari would freeze. I would have to force quit. I have all the latest updates, it work fine before I installed the latest safari (3.2.1). Is anyone else having a similar issue? I have to use Mozilla for the time being.

    Hi,
Does Safari work when launched from another user account on the machine?
If you don't have another account, use System Preferences > Accounts > \[+\] to create one temporarily for testing.
If it works there, we know for sure the problem is isolated to your account and we can concentrate debugging there.

  • Tiger freezes and displays black box to restart

I just did a fresh install of Tiger a week ago on a clean drive. Last weekend I downloaded some ROMs for MacMame. I visited some sites and they had this page where you had to click to proceed to download. I kept doing it and doing it, but never got to the page. Now I'm afraid I downloaded a virus or something with the ROMs messed up my computer as the problem happened after this. I already ran Disk Utility and the drive is repaired. Any ideas on what I can do?

I'm not aware of any virus that'll cause what you're seeing. There are very few, if any, that affect Macs. Since you've just started playing with it, reinstall the OS, make a bootable backup/clone to another HD (use Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, SilverKeeper, etc.), and see if you can repeat the problem. Internal HDs (60-130 GBs are usually available for under $100). I recommend Seagate or Hitachi for reliability.

  • IBook G4 freezing, and nothing much more

I’m hoping for some creative help with a very troubling problem I’m having with my G4 iBook.
Bought in 2004, this 14-inch iBook is running Tiger (though it came with Panther) and has 768 MB of RAM, a 60 gig hard drive, and a 1.07 GHz processor. It has never caused me any problems and I have been able to run an impressive array of programs at the same time with only about a dozen full-scale crashes that I can recall.
About three weeks ago, the computer started to freeze repeatedly, particularly when hooked up to an external monitor or TV. I ran the Disk Utility, both from the computer and off the Mac Os install disk, though no problems were found. The freezing continued and became even more persistent. At that time, programs would become non-responsive, the clock would stop, but the mouse pointer could still be moved. Sometimes, a thin line of zebra stripes would appear at the top of the screen and the mouse pointer would not move. A small, multi-coloured line (about one pixel wide and barely the height of the top menu bar) developed on the screen and has remained since.
Luckily, I use the computer for work and sent it off to our company repairperson, who specializes in Macs. As always seems to be the way, he could find nothing wrong with the computer — it worked fine for him over the three days he tested it. He installed a fresh copy of Tiger, removed Norton Utilities, which often can often cause operating problems, according to him. (He did not remove any other programs.) He did a hardware diagnosis and found no problems. He sent it back to me.
When I got the computer back, at first it worked fine. The only problem was that a blue screen would appear and the computer would become unresponsive when I hooked it up on the fly to an external monitor. (The computer tech suggested I hook up the source before powering the computer on to avoid a crash, though this was unnecessary before).
I moved my preferences from the archived system folder to the new library folder. The freezing then returned. This time, much worse. Without going into detail at this point about the freezing, I can say that the freezing became so bad that I decided to do something drastic — wipe the hard drive and re-install Tiger completely, which I did. (I backed up all my documents and preferences on another hard drive, of course.) This seemed like a good thing to do, seeing as the problem may have been with one or more of my programs. I was getting some corrupted file messages before I wiped the hard drive.
Sadly, even after two reinstalls of Tiger, freezes are persistent. I have also reset the power management unit several times, along with resetting the Parameter RAM. I have also turned off hard disk spin down and the option that puts the computer to sleep (in the Energy Saver control panel) to avoid unnecessary sleeping. No luck — freezes continue.
At this point, the computer has a clean hard drive and fresh copy of Tiger, including all the software updates through the Apple menu. I do have a few basic programs installed, such as Microsoft Office, iPhoto and some small, free downloadable programs. There is about 41 gigs of free hard disk space.
    Here are the freeze patterns:
    - When the computer freezes, the seconds counter on the clock stops, all programs are unresponsive and no force quitting is possible. The pointer can still be moved by the mouse, but that is the only action the computer makes. The only way to reset the computer is to hold down the power button.
    - Typically, if the computer is powered back on within less than five minutes, it boots up past the Apple symbol and spinning dial, then freezes on the blue screen.
    - If I wait for about five minutes or more, the computer will almost always boot up normally.
    - The computer seems particularly susceptible when peripheral devices are attached while running. For instance, it has crashed a few times while the computer was running as soon as — or shortly after — I inserted a USB key, a firewire cable (for a firewire transfer), or unplugged and re-plugged in the power adapter.
    - It has also taken to freezing or crashing when audio or video is played — iTunes, DVD Player (especially) or Quicktime. It doesn’t always freeze or crash, but it more often does than does not. It has crashed a few times when Acquisition — a peer-to-peer file sharing program — was running. I am currently running the Internet through an Airport wireless connection.
    - The computer was freezing consistently today after about 45 minutes operation, even with no programs running. I reset the Power Management Unit, Parameter RAM and disabled sleep and hard disk spin down, and it ran for two hours this evening (with no programs running and no network connected) and did not freeze. I intend to try a longer run overnight to see how it fairs.
Sorry for the long description. I just want to be very thorough with my explanation so potential problem solvers have enough to go on.
Hope you can help! I really appreciate it. I love this computer and am not quite ready (financially) to buy a new one.

This is the major sign of hope so far.
If the computer could run for 3 days and be functional enough to reinstall the OS, the logic board and HD can't be totally FUBAR.
Can your computer guy lend you a different power adapter?
Now, I'm guessing the computer guy didn't plug in peripherals while he was testing, so the problem may be with your ports. There could be a cracked solder joint, or the hot-plugging of your TV connection could have traumatized some electrical component inside the iBook.
You can't count on your OS at this point, because you have done some forced shutdowns. I'd recommend borrowing a new power adapter and seeing if Ubuntu can run your iBook for an extended period without freezing. Probably best not to go heavy on the multimedia test, since that could just as well be an Ubuntu bug.
Running Ubuntu with it's screen saver going for a day will be a pretty good test. Since Ubuntu loads into RAM, your system will get a thorough workout. Don't plug anything else in. I'm trying to reproduce the results that your computer guy got.
There's one other far-fetched possibility that would be good to check: could some of the outlets in your house be improperly wired? You can pick up an inexpensive outlet tester that will check to make sure the hot and neutral wires aren't reversed, and that the ground (earth) is properly grounded. You should check the proper wiring of all outlets that are involved with the computer, namely the TV's outlet, the monitor's outlet, and outlets that power any peripheral.
Again, this is a long shot, but it has been the answer for me in the past.

  • Kernel panic at start up

Tiger freezed while usage, I shut it down and tried to reboot Tiger (10.4.3), but now kernel panic appears every time I start my mac with "... ... hanging here" message log.
I already tried to repair permissions with disk utility in tier installation dvd. According to it there were nothing to repair. Also tried safe boot with no luck.
I don´t have an external hard drive or other mac to help with this problem.
Should I just reinstall tiger? There are some not backupped files in the hard drive, so clean install is not an option. Should I go with the simple install or archive and install?
I´m open to any other suggestions too. I just want my tiger to roar again. I would truly appreciate your help.

    Hi Aleksi_M,
Kernal Panics are very serious usually (But no always) related to a hardware problem. Common cases are logic board problems and RAM problems. I would not recommend re installing Tiger but I would strongly recommend that you take your PowerBook into your Local Apple Store or Phone Apple if that works better for you. Better to be safe than sorry with these things and Apple may be able to save your data.
I also have experienced consistently reoccurring kernal panic problem where I could not get the computer to boot. This was down to the logic board. I took it into an Apple Store and it was repaired in 1 week. (Had the part been in-store they could have done it on the spot)
    Hope this helps

  • My Itunes is frozen please help!

I am trying to import a cd and it got half way thru and and is frozen. I cant even quit the application. what do I do?? Please help.

Your CD is probably damaged so when you get it out,
    check it carefully for scratches.
You can also put your cursor on the Dock's iTunes
icon, hit control (or right click) and see a menu for
iTunes. Force Quit is at the bottom.
I just ran into this issue with damaged CDs and I'm
certain there's got to be a way to tell iTunes to
bail out of attempting to import a file that it
simply cann't read but I'm not finding any help.

I am experiencing the same trouble in here - although the CDs I am trying to import are perfect. Besides, if I try to force-quit iTunes, the whole Tiger freezes. I've seen other posts in this forum and I'm starting to think it has something to do with an iTunes 6.0.5 issue - 'cause other users are having the same kind of trouble.
If it's not that, then it's a hardware trouble.
