OS X Tip - Two Click's from EXIF data...

I tried the Tip shown below...and for me, it doesn't work as advertised...I only see the 'last saved' information...no EXIF data...I have another program I use to give me a complete list of the data...but why doesn't it work for me???
You’re Two Clicks from a Photo’s EXIF Data
When you take a photo with a digital camera, the camera embeds info directly into the file, including the make and model of camera, the exposure, shutter speed, and a host of other info (called eXiF data). That info is usually viewed within an application like Photoshop or iPhoto, but now you can view it right from the Finder.
Just click on the photo’s icon, then press Command-i to bring up the info dialog. When it appears, click on the right-facing triangle beside the words “More info” and the basic eXiF data will appear.
1.42 Mini 80 gb   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1gb BT/AP - 250gb FW - 320gb usb2

This is normal behaviour when saving to drives that are not HFS formatted.
See: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106510
They are called "double apple" files, and contain resource fork and metadata relating to the file. For instance photoshop thumbnails or custom icons are stored in the "doulbe apple" part.

  • Create view link between two view objects (from programmatic data source)

    Hi Experts,
Can we create a link between two view objects (they are created from programmatic datasource ; not from either entity or sql query). If yes how to create the link; ( i mean the like attributes?)
I would also like to drag and drop that in my page so that i can see as top master form and the below child table. Assume in my program i will be only have one master object and many child objects.
    Any hits or idea pls.
    -t

Easiest way to do this is to add additional transient attributes to your master view object, and then include those additional transient attributes in the list of source attributes for your view link. This way, you can get BC4J to automatically refer to their values with no additional code on your part.

I have to populate the Date Created IPTC field, and sometimes make mistakes because of the (illogical) US order of MM/DD/YYYY.

  • Two clicks required to get results from Search Input box on toolbar.

    I'm running version 8.02.208.
I'm new at Webhelp and was hoping somebody might be able to give me some pointers.
If I open my published webhelp on the Internet and try to search using the Search Input box on the toolbar the first time, two clicks are required in order to get search results.
This problem only appears the first time, all other searches from the Search Input box on the toolbar work properly with only one click required.
In addition, the Search tool opened from the Search button always works fine first and every time, but I did see the extra space that I've read about.
This is what I don't understand...the problem I mentioned with the 2 clicks required on the toolbar, never happens when I Generate and View the results. Meaning that I am looking at the output but have not published it yet. It works fine first and every time.
Why would the problem show up one way and not the other? Does anyone know what could be different?
I just keep hoping that there is something that I can do to get rid of the problem. I keep getting Problem Reports opened and assigned to me and complaints from customer service from customers. They think the search isn't working and I keep having to explain.....arghhhh!
    Thanks!
    Deb

    Hi Sheryl and Peter,
I have also tried the options as you have suggested without success. Everything works fine when the WebHelp is published to a local or network drive but when it is published to the server the issue occurs.
I would point out too, that I find that the problem with the space only occurs on the intial attempt to search using the Search Box. Any subsequent attempts without closing the browser appear to work fine.

    1. What's the difference between private mode in Safari which i have to turn on every time again when opening safari.
It's a two click activity which i would love to be able to set in the preference as default. It's tyering when have to do it everyday a few times. (Yes, i'm one of many who have the "i like safari but since the update crash everyday a few times" syndrome...

    2. and the "tell websites not to track me" under Safari - Preference - Privacy.

That box should prevent websites using trackers to log your movements on the Web to benefit advertisers. I have no idea if it does.
Safari can keep your browsing history private. When you turn on private browsing, Safari doesn’t remember the pages you visit, your search history, or your AutoFill information, so your partner cannot see where you have been, but you must also remember to also turn off acceptance of cookies.
In all other respects Private Browsing is not as private as you might think:
    http://www.switchingtomac.com/tutorials/how-to-make-safaris-private-browsing-fea ture-actually-private/
    http://www.insanely-great.com/news.php?id=9054
and then Apple's own advice from here: http://www.apple.com/pro/tips/privacy_safari.html
"Note that the Private Browsing option does not prevent Safari from collecting cookies (the preference files automatically generated by many websites). The Reset Safari option clears all cookies. If you want to delete only certain ones, choose Preferences from the Safari menu, click the Security tab, and then click Show Cookies. You can select and delete individual cookies from the list that appears. Careful, though — if you’re a frequent web user, this list can be very, very long."
which is itself incomplete, the relevant part being 'If you want to delete only certain ones.
To that end it is useful to have Safari Cookies installed, which is the only cookie manager available for Safari:
    http://sweetpproductions.com/safaricookies/
which automatically deletes all cookies not marked as 'favourites' when closing Safari. It does the same for Flash Cookies, but they are subject for themselves:
    From this website:
    http://machacks.tv/2009/01/27/flushapp-flash-cookie-removal-tool-for-os-x/
For those who do not know about Flash cookies, more properly referred to as Local Shared Objects (LSO), they operate in a similar way to regular browser cookies but are stored outside the purview of your browser, meaning you cannot delete them from within your browser, whether Safari, Firefox, Opera or any other. Typically they are issued from sites or 3rd party sites that contain Adobe Flash content. Since virtually all internet advertising is  delivered in Flash, Google/Doudleclick and all other internet advertising companies are sure to be tracking your browsing behavior with Flash cookies. These companies can see you traverse the Internet as you come upon the plethora of sites that contain their embedded advertising. Check out the Wikipedia entry here.
In Mac OS X they are stored in the following location:
    /User’s Home Folder/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/#SharedObjects
The settings for the Flash cookies are stored in:
    /User’s Home Folder/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/macromedia.com/support/flashplayer/sys
In OS X Local Shared Objects, or Flash Cookies, are appended with a .sol suffix. Flush deletes all the Flash cookies (.sol) and their settings.
Flush can be downloaded from that page.
If you want to retain certain Flash cookies but not others, the excellent add-on for Safari called SafariCookies now includes a setting for automatically deleting flash cookies you don't want to retain, when Safari is shut down, in the same as it deals with ordinary cookies:
    http://www.sweetpproductions.com/safaricookies/index.htm
which not only does that but much more equally useful stuff!
This article covers the issue in more depth:
    http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2009/08/you-deleted-your-cookies-think-again/
Flash cookies are also known as 'Zombie Cookies' and are used by a number of firms, including Hulu, MTV, and Myspace. Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at the internet security firm Sophos, told BBC News that the source of the trouble was Adobe Flash itself, which he called "one of the weirdest programs on the planet".
"I think it's highly unlikely that these large companies have abused Flash cookies - which are different from browser cookies - with malicious intent," he said.
"I think it's much more likely that the vast majority of users are simply oblivious to the bizarre way in which Adobe allows them to configure the software."

  • Clicking noise from hard disk

    Hello forum,
one more hard disk noise problem. My new MPB arrived two days ago and I immediately noticed a clicking noise that is presumably emitted by the hard disk. I've got the basic 250GB model, so it's unrelated to the 500GB noise. The sound occurs quite regularly every 20sec or so, but only when the disk is inactive. The system doesn't freeze. The noise appears regardless whether the disk power saving feature is enabled or not. Here is an amplified version of the sound without the normal background noise (fan, hard disk):
    http://www.filefactory.com/file/ah25f1h/n/ClickingNoise_wav
I've learned that clicking noises are a certain sign of hard disk failure. So should I return it immediately and ask for a replacement?

It sounds like you've got two clicking noises happening back to back, correct? I have the new 250GB drive as well (5400 RPM) and I'm hearing a periodic click similar to the second one in your clip.
I can hear only the second click, too. Only if I mute the background noise and amplify my recording, I hear the first one. Could you perhaps take a record of the sound that your MBP makes so that we can compare the sounds?
Haven't noticed any other problems with the drive, though. Is yours a Fujitsu? Mine is, and according to their web site, "if the drive is idle it will automatically move the heads periodically to prevent lubricant migration." I'm wondering if that's what the noise is.
Interesting. Mine is a Fujitsu, too, and perhaps the two noises come from the disk head starting and parking.
Actually, it sounds a lot like the 500GB noise, except without the beep. I've seen very few, if any, issues with the 250GB drive, but I'm holding out hope that a fix may come along at some point.
I agree. Currently the sound doesn't seem to be harmful, but one never knows.

  • Photoshop not seeing lens model in exif data from A3 export

Hi, I am trying to use the lens correction features in CS5 but the lens type can't be read in the exif data of an image I've exported from A3. It sees the focal length and body type. The lens type is listed in the Metadata Inspector in A3. I took the image into iPhoto and checked "extended photo info" and the lens type isn't there either. This happens with at least 2 lenses. One prime and one zoom. Any ideas?

    Hi again
Having played with metadata a bit more, it is possible to include EXIF data for the lens size etc.. eg...EF300mm f2.8L IS USM But it doesn't append the manufacturer's name, eg I use Canon, yet 'Canon' is not appended to the Lens data like it is to the camera name..
In the library Inspector click > Metadata > where it says 'General' click the down arrow, then click > Edit > from the window that appears click > EXIF > from the drop down list click > Lens (scroll down a bit)
The lens you used will now be appended to your data.
I have not tried exporting this to Photoshop so maybe you could post back if its possible to export this data to PS or not.
Maybe someone has information on this and can chip in here with advice....
    Hope this is helpful....... Gerry....
PS to all reading this, I also noticed while playing around with this ( I have not delved into metadata too much since Ap2) that all my personal details like mobile number, address, email etc are all appended by default, I imagine my address book info has been used here.
A useful feature indeed while selling photo's, or if you intend it to be there..... but not so good if you are not aware it's there in the first place.....!
Just a shared thought to whom it may concern....... Gerry.

  • EXIF data dropped when editing in Photoshop Elements 6.0 from iPhoto 8.0?

I've seen various posts about EXIF data issues, mostly about geo info. My question is:
Does iPhoto not include the EXIF data when you have it set to edit your photos in Photoshop Elements 6.0? The reason I ask is because I can easily see the EXIF data in iPhoto but when I choose to view the file info in PSE, it's not there - or at least in the detail that it was in iPhoto (i.e. camera make/model, aperture, ISO setting, shutter speed, etc.).
Anyone else notice this? What's going on here? Is this an issue with iPhoto 8.0?
Thanks for any insight and input.
    Best regards,
    Jason

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
I believe is you use PSE this way and then export out of iPhoto as Terence suggested you'll get the metadata.

  • From Bridge To PS To Export - EXIF Data Lost

    Hi all,
I'm wondering what happens to my EXIF data when I import a Canon RAW file via ACR from Bridge to PS. When I export the file as a JPG and then right-click the jpg properties, none of the camera data is recorded. Perhaps there is a tick-box I've just not ticked?
Also, if I add keywords in Bridge, should they carry through the export process? I'm interested to know if it's possible to auto complete the keyword field in flickr when uploading an image.
    CS5 with W7 and Canon 5Dii RAW.
    Thanks in advance.

Can you be a little more explicit about the exact steps you're taking?
I just opened an image from Bridge into Photoshop by right-clicking a CR2 file, choosing Open In Camera Raw, then hitting the [Open] button in the Camera Raw dialog.  Then I did File - Save As - JPEG, and all the camera metadata was retained (per Explorer's Properties, Details tab).
When you say "export", exactly how are you saving the file?  With File - Save For Web & Devices, there's a Metadata field that allows you to specify how little or how much to keep.

  • Clicking noise from back-ups

Since replacing my G5 with a new mac mini I hear frequent clicking noises from the APC Back-UPS that I have it plugged into. The only obvious difference is that the mini has an ungrounded two-prong plug while the G5 had a grounded three-prong plug. The clicking noise consists of two clicks in succession, the second one slightly lower in pitch. This occurs at random intervals but also in response to anything that I'm doing on the computer such as opening or closing an application, resizing a window, visiting or exiting a website, etc. Occassionally it will happen when the computer is asleep in which case I will hear the fan running briefly in the mini although the monitor doesn't wake up. When this happens I will often see the internet activity monitor light flashing on my dsl modem. I don't know if these noises are a sign that something isn't working properly or just an annoyance. In either case I would welcome suggestions on how to stop it as well as any ideas as to what might be causing it. The APC unit provides battery back-up power in the case of a power outage and surge protection. I submitted my question to APC support but got no response. I also talked to someone at AppleCare and he had no idea what was causing this and wasn't even sure if he knew what I was asking about. However lots of people use back-ups units so someone out there must have experienced this phenomena besides me.

I checked that box but wasn't around the sleeping computer long enough to tell if it made a difference. I plugged in a lamp with a dimmer and turned it up and down with no effect. Then I had an idea. I'm going to wait a couple of days before marking this as definitely solved, but here's what happened:
The UPS has three outlets marked "controlled by master." Anything plugged into these gets it's power turned off when the computer is sleeping. I had long ago moved the peripherals to the other outlets because I didn't like having my computer and monitor wake up whenever I turned on the printer just to use the copy function. Near the power button on the UPS is another smaller button with a graphic symbol. If you hold this down for a few seconds it turns off the "master enable" function. After I did this the clicking stopped.
This still leaves some unanswered (though no longer important) questions: Why was this an issue with the mini but not with the G5? Why was I getting clicking noises in response to doing things on the computer even with the usb connection to the UPS disconnected? Why was I also getting them even when the computer was asleep? One possible factor is the usb hub. The old one was on a pci card, while the new one is external with a power cord connected to the UPS. Another factor may be the ungrounded power plug on the mini vs. the grounded one on the G5. At any rate it looks like the problem is solved, at least for now.

  • Loosing everything on a RAID, is it possible in two clicks?

Okay, I TOTALLY screwed up! I hope, beyond hope, someone on here has some magical solution to a total lapse of good judgement on my part. Man, I did the stupidest thing I could manage, I think.
I thought I'd run an erase of my free space on my boot drive, for whatever reason. I have a boot drive, and then four drives connected in a basic striped Raid set (four slices) as my media drive.
I after while I decided to stop the erase operation, as it was taking a long time and the temp file was not letting me carry on with my normal work as it had of course filled my boot drive by this time. I selected cancel (or whatever it says) to stop it, and got the little spinning beach ball. Several minutes later, the ball was still spinning, and so out of impatience I decided to 'Force Quit" the Disk Utility. I think I've tried to do this erase function before and got just as impatient and either force quit it, or the same result occurred maybe my normally let it shut down early.
What happened was it didn't get rid of the temp file and it still showed I had zero space on my boot drive. Having something similar happen, in some fashion, before, I was trying to think how I could now get rid of this temp file. I tried searching for it, but couldn't really find it or know where to look. So I was thinking I'd try to start the erase function again in case it recognized the old temp file as I started the operated and hopefully would delete it.
Here is where I screwed up, totally. Because my drive names are somewhat similar, and because I was a little mentally tired at the time, I inadvertently selected one of my raid slices instead of my boot drive. And in two clicks erased it. I didn't erase the free space, I erased the drive. Or I guess I just reset the table information at the beginning of the drive (I'm hoping this may give me some sort of way out of this mess).
So, in summery, I have three of the four RAID slice images like they were, and the (virtual) raid image is still there (not mountable now), but I have one slice that I erased, or reset as a normal Mac Extended Journaled drive/image.
My problem is that I am a pro photographer (and do some video work) and I had a bunch of things I haven't backed up yet on the media drive and can't replace. I was actually planning on backing them up soon, but what help is planning at this point. I can't tell you how dumb I feel, or i guess numb is a better word.
I noticed a recover file in the trash called "EFTFile1.sparseimage" I'm not sure if that is related, or related to the process of the first erasing process. It is 201.74 GB used. My RAID is made up of 4 X 279.3 drives which was about 1 TB. It was nearly full, so you can imagine how much stuff I had on there. I wanted to back it up, but since I don't have a drive of that size elsewhere I was going to have to be selective about that, which is why I hadn't done it yet. I was trying to pare it down first. My boot drive is 465 GB, and still reads zero space available.
What do you all suggest? Did I just loose tons, and tons of work, some of which I can't recreate again in two clicks? Should I start drinking?
Any help would be VERY APPRECIATED.
    Thanks, Craig

Ok, I understand you. Using the show and hide method to dispatch events on the [Component 2], but how can I "reset" for example a comcoBox dataprovider already loaded with data?
    Puting on another way:
I have a [products_grid_component] and a [product_details_component]...to go from de grid to the details I wanna use an effect like I explain on my 1st post. I have a comboBox located in the [product_details_compoent] with several options fot that product_id  that i'm showing the details.
What happen is, for example, the comboBox's dataprovider is loaded with [Value1][Value2][Value3] and [Value 4] for the product_id=22 (example), when i call the [products_details_component] for the 1st time, I open the comboBox and all the data is displayed correctely with 4 options ([Value1][Value2][Value3] and [Value 4]). Then i go back to [products_grig_component] (both components slides right showing the [products_grid_component] and hidding the [product_details_component]) when i go to [product_details_component] to view the product_id=30, the comboBox behaves like this: imaging that the dataprovides contains [Value 15][Value 16][Value 17][Value 18] and [value 19]...now is the funny part...the comboBox index 0 is [Value 15] but when i open it i can see a space for 4 optnios, a scroolBar and it is still loaded with [Value1][Value2][Value3] and [Value 4] but if i select [Value2] what is going to be displayed is [Value16] and i after i had selected an option, the comboBox shows the optnios correctly..It looks like the comboBox dataprovider is not refreshed.
I already tryed to refresh() the dataprovider, empty the dataPRovider and loaded again with data, etc....but is def something i'm not doing right.
How can i turn around this??

  • Lens data from Exif

This is a question that was raised in the Lightroom Forum, but I think it might fit better in here. In Lightroom there is an option to sort images with respect to lens used, a very neat function, but when using raw files from Minolta (.mrw) or DNG's converted from these, no lens data is provided. The only information in there is "Unknown lens". Can this be fixed?

    Dana Gartenlaub wrote:

It may work this way with Pentax PEF files but unfortunately doesn't with Minolta MRW or Sony ARW files. Of course, Minolta AF (and now Sony Alpha) lenses do report their identities to the camera, and the camera does write this info into the EXIF data but it ends up as an obscure lens ID in the Minolta (or Sony) Maker Notes where most 3rd-party software (including Adobe's) cannot (or would not) access it.
    Eric DeSilva wrote:

This is not true! Adobe XMP won't read the Maker Notes sections but it does preserve them. When I convert an MRW file to DNG (with Adobe DNG Converter) and then create a TIFF or JPEG file from the DNG (with Camera Raw) then the Minolta Maker Notes will still be present in the final TIFF or JPEG file (and of course in the DNG file, too).

Sigma lenses don't have Minolta/Sony lens IDs but just random numbers. Kindly ignore what Sigma lenses do. And please don't bother which lens 'was really used.' Just provide us with the lens ID found in the EXIF Minolta/Sony Maker Notes data. Please!
By the way, is there a way to access the Minolta Maker Note LensID tag (or any tag) in the EXIF data through the JavaScript API? If not then please add one!
Currently, I enter the names of the Minolta/Sony lenses manually into the metadata. I customized my File Info Panel 'Camera Data 1' so I can enter the data there in a fairly comfortable way. This is not too hard to do because usually I am using no more than two or three different lenses per assignment usually. This way, the lens names go into the exif/1.0/aux tag named 'Lens.' Unfortunatey, due to a bug in Bridge or in XMP, raw files and DNG files won't accept changes in this and a few more tags; only TIFF and JPEG files will. Instead, the change will get stored in Bridge's cache only. So I wrote a Bridge script to manipulate the XMP sidecar files' contents directly, to 'burn' the changes from the volatile cache permanently into the disk files' metadata.
All this would become *much* easier when 1) we had access to the lens ID in the Minolta (or Sony) Maker Notes and 2) someone would eventually care about fixing that $#!+ metadata bug in Bridge (or XMP) which was already there in Bridge 1.0 and still is around in Bridge 2.1.

For this you create a form with input fields for the values you are searching for, put them on hte page in a way you like and in the end by hitting on a button (e.g. called Search) map all inputfields to parameters of a service method you defined in your application module or VO. This service method then executes a view criteria returning all matches in the default iterator (just as if you had used af:query.
