OS X Updates: how necessary is it to do?

My reason for asking this: I found in the past, that doing this removes songs from my iTunes that were not purchased (that I extracted from some of my youtube uploads).
So, when I get the pop-up "OS X Updates Available", what is the purpose, and is it crucial to do it for the 'health' of my MBAir?

Yes you should to be current with security.
They should not unless you have issue with the disk drive's directory.
Also why you should have one or two backups. I go for TimeMachine of course, and a full image of the system and any other disk volumes using Carbon Copy Cloner so I have everything, bootable backup and even offline backed up.

Double tap the home button. Slide the preview window upward. You can do 2 at a time.
It's rarely useful or necessary to do this. Very few apps actually "run in the background" (such as audio streaming and navigation apps). The vast majority are frozen and consume no resources. The iOS manages memory for you to optimize running apps.

It seems Apple is having some issues at their end. There have been hundreds of posts on the forum with the same problem.

It seems that every time I start up the IPad the banner over ITunes shows 8 or more in the banner. I have completly signed off of the ipad and it still comes up. Any suggestions? It seems to have coincided with IOS 7 being released, I have not downloaded IOS 7 to my IPad or my Iphone at this time.

I"m not sure exactly what to do because once I got mine sorted out I can't exactly replicate it to test it, but it's like somehow your ID gets messed up.
I tried to download an app, then Apple thought that I'd never bought anything from my device so went through the whole 'give your secret questions' thing and ended up having to call apple to get them to reset.
Long story short, the inability to update has something to do with the App Store not recognizing your device, even though part of it does recognize your device (which is why you get the little badges)
You could try downloading a free app and see if you can verify your ID. Or you can poke around in here

and see if you can manage your account and see if that helps.

The iphone will sync itunes content with one computer at a time. If you sync to another it will erase the current content from the iphone and repalce with content from the new computer.

There is no need to ever sleep a desktop Mac. I set my desktops Macs to never sleep the computer, sleep the monitor after 10-20 minutes & put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible. I do sleep my laptops by closing the lid, never through the Apple menu. I have had problems since at least OS 8 with Macs not waking from sleep, being "comatose," & needing to hold down the power button to shut the Mac off then restart. The laptops rarely exhibit this behavior. I wouldn't set the monitor to never sleep, though. It won't hurt anything, but the monitor, even a flat-panel, uses more energy than any component.

This is normal under iOS 7. The App Store app shows all apps you have updated and are displayed in an "updated" list. The apps will drop off of the list in a few weeks or so. If they show as being updated, then they have in fact been updated. They will remain in the "updated" list until they are dropped off after a time.

As you know, the business and programming community has

The iphone is designed to be synced to your computer regularly. Your contacts will be in whatever program ( outlook, address book, etc) that you have been synxing. Sync them back.
If you have failed to sync them, then they are likely gone. You can try restoring from backup.
