OS X v.10.4.11 incredibly sluggish, crashing often after recent upgrades.

About two months ago I upgraded my +15" Powerbook G4+'s stock-RAM from the factory issue 500-something KB card by swapping it out for *2GB of Kingston DDR2 SD RAM*. It was a quick, by the book swap. And almost immediately the computer was faster, less bogged down for usable memory, and could handle multiple applications with greater ease.
BUT after a week or so I began getting this crash message (link is safe, just a screencap of error message): *http://i40.tinypic.com/sq175j.jpg*. +The computer would freeze and demand to be manually shut down and restarted+. Once it was turned back on, the computer would display a "Report Error Message" saying that OS X had unexpectedly crashed.
My computer went out of warranty back in December, so I'm trying to troubleshoot this on my own. I'm not sure if the crashing is increasing in frequency or not, it certainly doesn't follow any recognizable pattern as far as when it crashes (as far as how many programs I'm running or how many processes I'm operating with). Usually I'm only using 30% of RAM, but the computer sounds likes it's working at 85-95%, getting incredibly hot and beginning to slow - then crashing.
I've considered moving all of my files to my external HD and reinstalling OS X 4.11, I've also considered saving some $ and upgrading to 10.5.6 (Leopard). If anyone has any experience with this issue or something like it, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi Northwarda, and a warm welcome to the forums!
First question, how much free space do you have on your Hard Drive?
Second, Boot off your Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.
Thirdly...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Worst update ever - my computer loads slowly, is incredibly sluggish, and totally unusable.

TThis has to be the worst update ever. My Mac (if it loads...50% success), boots slowly, is incredibly sluggish, and completely unusable.

Don't shout. Yes, we will be seeing an update soon. Version X.1 is always released just a few weeks after the initial release. Apple tries to repair the most disruptive bugs in that first update, and does more finetuning in the second, which usually is released about two or three months after the initial release. That's the usual routine.
On some Mac's people seem to have performance issues like yours. I understand your not happy, but I suggest you'll be patient some more and update when 10.1 or 10.2 comes out. When it does run smooth on your machine, you'll find out it's the best upgrade (it's an upgrade, not an update) since many years.
Do as Canyonlight wrote in the fourth entry of this topic. Just use you backup and go back to Mavericks and wait it out. Nothing wrong with that. Upgrading is not a necessity but a choice.

  • Extremely Sluggish mac, especially after 10.9.2 upgrade Any reasons?

    Hi!
A few months ago I got a mid 2012 Mbp with the following config:
    2.5Ghz i5/ 500gb /4gb (2x2) @1600Mhz
It was always a slow performer. Finder would hang and take ages for the "right click" menu to open, open programs would be sluggish and even after just three or four tabs running on chrome and no other app open, it would take forever to scroll, as the program would simply hang. I was waiting for the update and when 10.9.2 came, it made the problem even worse. On a fresh startup with no additional apps running, about 3 gb of my 4 gb ram are simply gone. Even if I load a bunch of  simple apps like Messages or Notes, it quickly escalates to 3.99Gb and the machine hangs constantly.
Does the OS itself really take up 3GB? If so... (and it seems that way) Dafuq was Apple thinking? I am really regretting spending so much to get a mac only to find out 75% of the memory is being consumed by the God damned OS itself.
I digress.Anyhow, a friend suggested that this model of mac benefits from getting an SSD. Should I get an SSD, or upgrade RAM or both, to get some immediate relief? Or is there a way to get back some of my RAM and better performance?

I would take a look at your Etrecheck report first and see if there are some things there that can be remedied before you go investing in more RAM and/or a SSD.

  • Ipad is sluggish after iOS8 upgrade

MMy ipad2 is very slow, sluggish and choppy after the latest iOS update.  It is almost unusable.  What can I do?

Apple wants you to upgrade your hardware. My iPad3 is doing the same thing. Planned obsolescence, since iPad sales are down and because a well maintained iPad will last seven years. The product is just too well built, so let's artistically choke out the old machines with a new IOS update.

  • Mac Mail is sluggish after Yosemite upgrade, does anyone know why or what to do?

Hi, I recently upgraded to Yosemite and have hated my mac mail ever since. I have noticed that my mac mail is extremely sluggish and I have had to re-start my mac multiple times.
It seems that everything else is working like usual, and I have read some similar forums and have tried re-indexing and re-building my mail boxes, but so far nothing has changed.
    Any thoughts?

You restart your Mac because Mail is sluggish, not for any other reason? And is it still sluggish after the restart?

  • Flash Cs6 incredibly sluggish save time, & unable to save document as

I am using Flash CS6, animating on ones with the brush tool.  my timeline is 100 frames long, there arent keyframes on every frame, but there are a lot of them.  my .fla file is 79mb.
there is only one thing in my library - a 15 second .wav audio file...
Saving the .fla file takes about 2 1/2 minutes!
after the 2 1/2 minutes I get flashed the "cannot save document as...   please try saving with a different name or on a different volume".
contrary to the error message the file does in fact save perfectly fine - in that volume with that name.
what is the deal with the save time being so outrageously long? the program is equally sluggish with copying and pasting keyframes - though thats less of an issue than the save time.
please help me, i can send you the flash file if your willing to look at it.
ps: I tried opening the file in cs5.5 - the save time was slightly faster, but not by much.

    Sujai, here’s what I found:
    1.       The student’s project is 58 mbytes in size. This is mostly because she used the flame deco tool to create a frame-by-frame animation of a rocket.
    2.       At school students have networked folders. The network is 1 gbit, and the server is in the same building.
    3.       It took 3 minutes and 40 seconds to save her project. At the end of the Save operation, we got the error message that it didn’t save properly (And, if we have auto-save on, this happens every 10 minutes). . However, the file was properly saved, and could be opened.
So, it appears that Flash has problems saving files of this size, at least in our network. This surprises me, because 50 mbytes is not that big.
I was able to get around this problem by having the student change her flame animation to a movie clip, and Tween the flames. It doesn’t have quite as cool a look as the frame-by-frame, but it’s more efficient (and only 6mbytes in size).
    Thoughts? JR

  • Reading List incredibly sluggish

Hi a few weeks ago i was able to add things no problem to reading list and whatever was added would sync no problem with both my 27" Imac upstairs and my Iphone 4S.
Then for no reason that i can discover one night i went to add something to reading list on my MacBookPro and the reading list took almost 15 seconds to appear!
i added the item and clicked the glasses expecting it to disappear but nothing happened,so i naturally clicked again but the whole screen "hitched"slightly to the left and a bit further when i did it again??
This was really difficult to recover from and i tried everything including a restart ,checking/verifying disks etc  but the phenomenon continues!
After a while i literally gave up using reading list  BUT what happened next was equally weird!
On my home LAN network i went on my Imac upstairs and it too was doing the exact sme thing!
Is reading list controlled by the cloud and has anyone else had or is having anything like this going on as well,i am really not happy that this is happening on my Macs, this is so unusual ,please any help or advice would be welcomed.

I am unable to open a reading list item when i am not connected to the internet
You need an internet connection in order to access pages saved in your Reading List in Safari.
"Reading List doesn’t store articles for offline viewing—when accessing a saved article in the Reading List, your computer must be connected to the Internet."

  • 27" iMac very sluggish after recent software/firmware update

I bought my 27" iMac (2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB RAM) maybe 6-7 months ago...and it has had NO problems. Even after updating to Lion. Smooth.
But after the most recent graphics firmware update (Feb 29) and software update (late Feb/ealry March 2012...can't remember exact date)...now my iMac is so sluggish! Running more than one application really makes my iMac run slow. And I'm not talking about Photoshop...I'm talking about Firefox, Safari, Mail, iTunes. Basic ones. Especially bad when I play video...very choppy.
Any clue what's going on? I ran Disk Utilitiy (all good, repaired permissions), Clean My Mac, CCleaner...all say good and healthy. So I am at a loss.
Any help would be greatly be appreciated. I'm still under warranty...but I don't think I need to bring it in do I?
    Thanks!

  • Ibooks search function slow & sluggish after ios8 upgrade

With a large collection of digital books, I have always loved the ipad and ibooks for the simple fact that the search function was by far superior to those offered by other tablet competitors. I upgraded last night, and have immediately found that the search function is now sluggish and lags as i type (was not this way with ios7). I own an ipad air, and I have compared ibooks on my friends ipad gen 3 who is still on ios7 and hers is faster than mine!
What has changed to justify the sluggish feel and speed to what was once a very light and speedy app???

I experience this, too. I wonder whether the iBooks library search now extends to one's iCloud collection, slowing the process If that's it, there should be a configuration option to turn off the "feature."

  • ThinkPad Edge E545 - Sluggish & Crashes Daily

    Hi there,
I thought I'd see if I could get help here before opening a repair ticket. I'm experiencing general sluggishness as well as daily freezups and browser crashes with this brand new laptop purchased in November of 2014. Whenever I run either Chrome or Internet Explorer, the names and x's (to close tabs) in the browser tabs suddenly disappear on a daily basis at random times. I have to either reboot or use Task Manager to close the browser and start again when this happens. I also get random freezes, where the entire computer (including the mouse cursor) stops responding, then it starts responding again after 20-30 seconds. Chrome in particular has a curious issue when launched: instead of the normal Chrome window appearing, a very generic, basic, and blank window appears at first, which after three seconds is filled in with the normal Chrome features. On no other computer I own or use does Chrome behave this way, it usually just launches normally from the start.
I bought this laptop with Windows 7 preinstalled rather than 8. The only programs I installed are Avast, AOL 9.7, CCleaner, and MalwareBytes (the free version that does not actively run), and I only removed whatever antivirus came preinstalled (was it McAfee?). I also updated Java, Adobe Reader, and Flash. The problems persisted even after I completely uninstalled Avast. I've run virus scans with both Avast and MalwareBytes and found 0 infections. Uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome, even after cleaning the registry and manually removing leftover files and folders in the AppData and ProgramData folders in between uninstall and reinstall, does not accomplish anything. Booting in Safe Mode seems to alleviate the curious Chrome load issue (it opens with the normal titlebar and buttons, without a blank startup window).
Any ideas what's wrong? Any known issues with the Windows 7 drivers perhaps? Or the included Lenovo software? Thanks.
    Peace,
    Brian

    Hi there,
I thought I'd see if I could get help here before opening a repair ticket.

  • Sluggish iPhone performance after iTunes Match

My iPhone is sluggish and I think it happened after enabling iTunes Match.  I notice the sluggishness mainly in the Music app.  If I'm playing something and the iPhone goes to sleep, when I wake it takes maybe 10 seconds before it will let me unlock the slider.  The Music app takes awhile to load, and it always goes out to the Internet on launch.  If I play a tune then turn the phone sideways to view coverflow it takes at least several seconds.  I don't remember the phone behaving this way before iTunes Match.  It's an iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1.1.  Any ideas?

My Camaro will recognize the iPhone still, but sits indexing for well over 45 minutes. I have yet to be able to play anything attached via the iPhone to USB connector. Bluetooth streaming does work, however the bluetooth on my 4s keeps cutting out (always has). So bluetooth really isn't an option.
My work around for the indexing issue was to create a playlist on my computer that was a reasonable size (500 songs for me), then download everything on my iPhone, then turn iMatch off. That keeps the files local to the iPhone, and indexing is only around 5 minutes. Otherwise the Camaro's computer needs to index the 8000+ songs I have on the cloud, even if they're not physically on the iPhone.
It would be nice if Apple would have an xml index already built that the GM computer systems could access, since they are supposed to be native to each other.

  • My Mac book pro mid 2010 is incredibly slow! Even after refurbishing.

My Mac book runs very sluggishly, I have replaced the hard drive, 1TB 5400, doubled the ram, 8GB and performed a fresh install of snow leopard and I'm still getting the beach ball all the time. The boot time is well over a minute. Any ideas would be really appreciated.

  • System sluggish and unresponsive after 10.6.7 update

I have a 2009 model MacBook Pro and ran the update earlier today with no issues, though when it booted back up the system was very slow to boot and ended up hanging before the dock would load. After hard restarting and trying to bring the system up again, a similar thing happened once applications started to run. It's almost as if the CPU and Memory aren't functioning properly. I'm not really sure what to do. I tried to open Time Machine to attempt to restore to a prior version, but the system won't even allow me to do that.
Can I revert to a prior version or is there a way to reinstall 10.6.7 without brining up that GUI? I need help.

I restored a Time Machine backup that still had 10.6.6 from yesterday, though when it tried to restart after restoring, OS X would hang on the gray screen. I hard restarted and then tried to boot into Safe Mode to the same result. I then booted to the Snow Leopard DVD and ran Disk Utility and verified the disk to find that everything is fine. I then repaired the permissions. After it ran it's course, I attempted to boot into Safe Mode again and was greeted to a hanging gray screen. Just like before the spinning wheel just keeps going and going, but this time the progress bar fills to about 25% and then disappears all together. I'm left with nothing but the Apple and a spinning wheel with no real hope of it completing. Hopefully my early morning Genius Bar appointment can help me.
