OS X v Windows XP on 1.66 1GB

Hi, I'm fairly new to a MAC though I used an Amiga 1200 a long while ago which also uses the Motorolla chip...so I feel at home with the OS. I boght my Mini as the cheapest option with an Intel chip so that I could try Bootcamp and start to enjoy the web without loads and loads of protection etc... I opted for 1GB RAM as I read it was essential. So far I've really taken to my Mini but need to clarify issues re hardware performance...
Questions - Does OS X really have to occupy 17GB of my drive? It was this size when I received it. XP 2GB...
Why does software run slower in OS X than in XP? This seems mad for hardware to run slower on its native OS. Resizing and moving Powerpoint presentations with a few slides open (with large pics in them) makes my mini feel like a Pentium II 400mhz - the images move in stages as if the VRAM is exhausted. Is this really due to Rosetta - I've run emulators on a PC that are faster. A dual Core 1.66 with 1GB RAM ought to do better.. Has anyone got a link to a benchmark site that compare MAC XP like for like?
I've run Speed 20 and got a score of 94.7 - is this about right?
Thanks in advance for any replies - if my post should be elsewhere please point me in the right direction. Dont get me wrong I'm sure a dual boot Mac is the answer long term but feel I should get more from the hardware.

I think 17Gb would be about right, but that really isn't just the OS, but also the supplied applications such as iTunes, Quiktime, Garageband, iMovie, Mail, Safari, the test drives for iWork etc. There are also lots (many many, many) foreign language resources and print drivers etc which can actually be deleted to free up space. Applications such as Monoligual can perform that cleanup, though I'd suggest you leave them alone for the time being unless and until you begin to run out of space, though if you do remove them you can always put them back on the system anyway of course!
It's true that MacOS was built for this architecture, but then so was Windows, and performance issues are really more about user perception of the way each is optimized. Or indeed, user perception as a whole. Personally I've always found that all else being equal, Windows tends to have a slightly snappier feel, but I know from lap tests that it's as much in screen redraw and menu reaction than in data handling because that's what MS know will appeal to most users. Apple aren't entirely averse to the same user-oriented issue, but they also know that to make the system as smooth and integrated as it is, considerable effort has to be focussed on that too. As a video editor, I know the MacOS method works best for creative workflow, but as a system admin, I know Windows appeals to those who want the feel of better power. Sadly, I think the days are long gone that that it was really possible to engineer a neat, lean and capable OS that wasn't power hungry to the degree of requiring compromises and trade-offs.
Neo Office is certainly native, and seems very stable in the systems I've used it (I don't actually use an Intel Mac because I need software that isn't native yet, so I stick to PPCs as yet, but I set them up and test them out for users). I've included NeoOffice on 3 or 4 now, and the users like it, and certainly find it much better in performance terms than MS Office 2003 or 2004 edition.
I suspect that a PC virus could indeed reside on the Mac partition, but you could throw on a copy of ClamXav to keep that threat under control. Also open source as you likely know, and quite effective. I use it to mop up infections that AVG misses or fails to clean up - something that seems a tad more prevalent since last week's release of 7.5, which doesn't seem to have been fully stabilized yet!
Where the future of OS X and Windows is concerned, I think the greatest issue isn't so much whether Vista's security features improve sufficiently as much as it is in the fact that in the malware community as a whole, MS is seen as the bad guy in a big way, making the authoring of malware to target it a major activity. When you add the fact that over time, more and more malware is authored not for disruptive purposes but for criminal intent, and it's reasonable to think the targeting of Windows will continue, and if anything intensify with the volume of email, spyware and browser traffic. But there again, the weakest link in any system security is the user - and as ever the worst problems are caused as a result of those who simply don't understand the need for security or the degree of adequacy (or otherwise) of security on their own systems.
I'm not sure if there's a forum to address the XP/Intel Mac converts, but within this community, you could look at http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1165 as a place to start.
I probably missed addressing some of your issues - apologies if so, but shout out and I'm sure loads of people will jump in with their thoughts and suggestions!

  • ESXi6.0 Host, WIndows 7, only boots with 1GB RAM

    Hi gang,
I converted a physical Win7 machine for use on my ESXi 6.0 sever and it created the machine just fine.  I added a second disk to the server and moved the VM files to that disk, removed it from the inventory, and then added it back.  The VM was originally configured to use 4GB RAM.  However, when I power on the machine, the console window stays black and Windows never boots.  With some trial and error, the only way I was able to get the VM to power on and boot was if I changed its settings to only use 1GB RAM.  There is 8GB RAM total in the ESXi host and the other VMs aren't using much, so there is plenty freely available.  However it simply won't boot with more than 1GB configured.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Well I deleted the VM and re-created it, and reloaded Windows and all my software, works fine now.
    Thanks for all the help.

  • U550 - Windows 7 - 0x000000A5 BSOD with 1Gb RAM

A friend of mine asked me to install Windows 7 on her IdeaPad U550. So I did. Everything worked at first. But after installing drivers and some software, I started getting BSODs on widows startup:
The BIOS in this system is not fully ACPI compliant. 0x000000A5 (0x00001000, 0x00000000, 0x55AA55AA, 0xFFFF0091)
I tried reinstalling windows 7, but windows setup fails with the same BSOD message.
Some further experimentation has brought me to the following conclusions:
    1) the laptop works fine with a 1Gb memory module installed.
    2) the laptop doesn't work with more then 1Gb RAM installed (U550's shipped with one 1Gb and one 2Gb modules installed)
    3) the problem isn't in the installed OS (DVD booted windows setup also fails)
    4) both RAM moduls are working properly (tested them on my other laptop)
    5) both RAM slots are working properly (windows starts with 1Gb RAM module in either one of them)
    6) there're no BIOS updates for Lenovo IdeaPad U550.
There IS however some kind of problem with the battery. There's a notification in systray recommending to replace it. Taking the battery out or placing it back in doesn't seem to make any difference in regard to BSODs.
So, my best theory at the time is this: the battery (and/or it's absence)  somehow causes the ACPI-related errors. Now, that sounds kind of stupid to me, and I can't just ask my friend to buy a new battery if I'm not even sure it's gonna fix the problem. That's why I need your help, guys. Any help is appreciated.

Well I deleted the VM and re-created it, and reloaded Windows and all my software, works fine now.
    Thanks for all the help.

  • HP Compaq d530 SFF not recognizing DIMMs. Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit - BIOS version 02.44

    Hello HP community!
I recently received a HP Compaq d530 SFF, from the company, where I had my work experience.
I gladly took their offer and took the PC home, all was going well until I bought myself some new DIMMs, from ebuyer.com.
I new for a fact, the computer needs DDR 333MHz, PC2700 and it had to be in DIMM format, so I went and bought 3x1GB modules. A few days later they arrived and I inserted them into the computer, making sure that two DIMMs were in the blue slots, and the others (I wanted to keep a 256MB module in) in the black slots.
I re-inserted the power cable and tried to boot the PC, it showed me a BIOS message, showing the amount of memory had changed, since the last boot. Once the configuration showed up, it only recognized the 256MB module. I then powered down the computer, to then remove the 256MB module, to see what would happen. I then rebooted the PC and it gave me an error tone (No picture). To which I then (rotatingly) tried each different DIMM, to see if one of them was defect. They all gave me the same error tone. Since then, I have been running Windows Vista Home Premium, with 1GB (4x256MB DIMM).
Does anyone maybe have a suggestion, how to solve this problem?
I have already updated the BIOS version to 02.44 (Latest I could find).
    Thanks in advance!
    Yours sincerely Simon Cahill

Oracle products are not certified, nor supported for Window Home Edition OS.
But I have seen machines running on both.
How are you Installing? from a cd or the files are found under a directory on your system?
If from a directory make sure that when you unzip the zip file all the files are unzipped under their default folder, (usually disk1).
And use a different oracle home.

  • Windows 7 Not recognizing 10.5 Disk

I got thorough the installation of seven in bootcamp, and then it did some updates. Afterwards, i inserted the 10.5 install disk, and nothing happened. I went to look at it, but it said it was empty. Ive tried auto opening, running as admin, nothing works. I know the disk works because just yesterday i reformatted my comp using that same disk.
Is there an alternate way to run the bootcamp installer in 7 without using the disk? Is there a way to get my disk working?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
useally it is MacDrive that prevents the OSX DVD to be seen in Windows, so check if you have it installed (although I doubt it with afresh install).
If you have access to a Windows PC and have an 1GB USB-Memory-Stick, you can insert the OSX DVD in this computer and copy the full content of the Windows-part of the OSX DVD onto the USB-Stick and the use it on your Mac.
    Hope it helps

I have an N85, and my WIFI modem had WPA2 security which when connecting N85 through

    Hi pilotjoe,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having some issues with getting the printer reinstalled back on to your xp computer.
I do have a few steps that we can try in the attempt to resolve this issue.
First off, please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
If you have the printer connected to the computer with a usb cable, please remove the cable from both pc and printer and leave it disconnected until further notice.
The next link that I am going to give you is the All-in-One Software Removal Utility.
Once the removal is complete, please restart the computer so that all the changes take affect.
The next link I have for you is the HP Officejet and PSC Full Feature Software and Driver.  Save this download to the Desktop of the computer so that it creates its own icon.  This will make it easy for us to find once the download is complete.
Double click the new icon and follow the installation instructions.  You will be prompted as to when to connect the usb cable so please do not connect it before hand.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
    Cheers,
Click the “Kudos Thumbs Up" at the bottom of this post to say “Thanks” for helping!
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

  • Computer not responding to ipod

    hello there
i have a 2nd gen ipod, and im having some problems with it. when i put it into the dock, the light flashes orange 3 times. but thats it. it doesnt show up on my computer, doesnt show up in itunes. nothing. it does, however, charge, despite showing no sign of it, and when i remove it it flashes green to show its charged. its fully functioning when i listen to it as well. any ideas? thanks

OK...after having worked flawlessly for almost a year, my Shuffle just yesterday started having this issue. In addition to the symptoms described here, my USB ports appeared to be dead (to the point where just rebooting didn't help). Here's what I've learned so far: not saying I've solved the issue, but...so far, so good.
For starters, I have Windows XP Pro and a 1GB g2 Shuffle. I have the latest iTunes and Shuffle software (8.0.2.20 and 1.0.4 respectively). I leave the shuffle charger plugged into the USB port full time, and just dock or undock the shuffle as required.
In my situation, at least, the key seems to be this:
    1. Dock your shuffle ONLY when iTunes is open.
    2. Undock your shuffle ONLY when iTunes is open (and when it is safe to do so per the status in iTunes and the light on the Shuffle).
    3. DO NOT use the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature provided by Windows.
I've started always using the "eject" feature in iTunes prior to undocking my shuffle (even when it's not required, per the Apple support pages), but I don't know if that's necessary or not.
After two days of pulling my hair out and attempting to restore my USB ports to working order, I've docked and undocked my shuffle multiple times tonight, following the three guidelines above, without any issues (whereas if I failed to follow them, I'd have to restore my USB ports).
Now, as far as the USB ports go...mine were dead. I mean, once the computer didn't recognize my iPod, it also didn't recognize my USB mouse, my CompactFlash card reader, etc. Rebooting didn't help. I found the following article, and it sort of got me back in working order, but I'm not entirely sure what's going on yet, so I can't fully vouch for its effectivity. But feel free to try it out if you're having USB issues. (Note: it's a little "techy", so if you're not comfortable editing your registry or uninstalling devices/drivers, you might want to consider some other...yet to be determined...course of action.)
    http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/612232-solved-all-dead-usb-ports.html
Follow JohnWill's advice - ALL OF IT (e.g., create the restore points, etc.).
I'm not responsible if things go horribly, horribly wrong. 8^)
Anyway, hope this helps. I'll update this response or the thread if I find anything else out.

  • Satellite L30-113 Memory Problem

I have a Satellite L30-113 that is not reporting the correct
    memory size.
The system was supplied with 512Mb and I have installed an additional 1Gb
Stick but for some reason windows is only reporting 896Mb installed, and the Graphics card
is using 128Mb. The BIOS is also reporting that only 896Mb of ram is installed.
When I run system Info for windows it only detects the 1GB module installed
although if i remove one memory module and have either the 512 or 1GB installed
    it works fine.
I have also installed the latest BIOS and this doesn’t seam to
    have had any affect.
Also both memory sticks have been tested in an other laptop so i know they both work.
Are there any issues with mixing memory sizes in these laptops or do the memory
sticks have to be matched sizes?
The OS is Windows XP Pro

I don't agree, because usually L30 supports not only the same modules. One of my friends has 512mb Hynix and 1gb Kingmax in his L30 installed, and has no problem with it. There's a guy in another topic how uses 533mhz and 667mhz modules together, and he also has no problem. So I think you should choose the modules carefully and I recommend the same modules too, but it doesn't mean you couldn't use different modules in L30. Mostly you should care about the manufacturer, for example Kingmax, Kingston, Corsair, Samsung, Hynix could be a good choice. I'm sure there are another good brands too, but as I see usually there are no compatibility problems with these modules.

  • Questions about System Requirements for Adobe Air programs

Earlier today I asked someone who runs Tweetdeck if they knew what the system requirements were for running Tweetdeck on my desktop (Windows)
they gave me a link here: http://www.adobe.com/products/air/systemreqs/
    and I found this:
    Windows
    2.33GHz Intel® Pentium® 4, AMD Athlon® 64 2800+, or faster processor
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home, Professional, or Tablet PC Edition with  Service Pack 3; Windows Server® 2003 or 2008; Windows Vista® Home  Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise (including 64-bit editions)  with Service Pack 2; or Windows 7
    512MB of RAM (1GB recommended)
    Here are my computer statistics:
Operating System: Windows Vista™ Home Basic (6.0, Build 6001) Service Pack 1 (6001.vistasp1_ldr.101014-0432)
               Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
    System Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
System Model: Compaq Presario CQ60 Notebook PC
                   BIOS: PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Release 6.1
              Processor: AMD Athlon Dual-Core QL-65 (2 CPUs), ~2.1GHz
                 Memory: 2814MB RAM
Page File: 1858MB used, 3993MB available
            Windows Dir: C:\Windows
        DirectX Version: DirectX 10
    DX Setup Parameters: Not found
         DxDiag Version: 6.00.6001.18000 32bit Unicode
Will me only having a 2.1GHz processor really affect how my performance is with Adobe Air products/apps in general?

Yes- I've had some lower price pc's using an Adobe AIR app and can tell the difference.
Computers where performance was a huge issue was Compaq CQ56 & Toshiba Satellite C655D
These computers are under 2.0 GHz and the app seems to freeze up on occassion or run slower.
