  • File Sharing with Airport and 2 MacBook Pros

I'm stumped on file sharing. When I turn file sharing on in MacBook Pro #1 preferences and type in the afp address on MacBook Pro #2, I see several folders with a red check next to them. When I click on them it says I don't have permission. Is there a way, using the afp address of MacBook Pro #1, to log onto using MacBook Pro #2 and view the contents and files of the MacBook Pro #1 hard drive? I've tried everything, but I'm sure I'm missing something simple!
    Thanks,
    Chris

Under "Shared" in the navigation pane on the left of your Finder window, click on the computer you're trying to access.
Now on the gray bar right above the folders, it should say "Connected as:" (see picture)
Who does it say you are connected as?

  • File sharing with iMAC and OS 9.1 Power PC back-to-back not working

Here's the setup. Any ideas on why it's not working?
Internet ports connected with crossover cable.
OS 9.1: File sharing ON, Program linking OFF, Document file selected for sharing
OS 10.4.8: Personal file sharing ON, Built in Ethernet both computers, GO connect to server-Power PC IP address entered.
Response after a timeout: "Connection failed. Check server name or IP address".
17 iMAC Intel core duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Still not working. Here’s what I tried.
OS 9.1: Configured TCP/IP in Control Panel for connection via Ethernet slot. Noted IP address from last DHCP connection. Turned on File Sharing in Control Panel. Selected file for sharing. In Chooser clicked Appleshare icon and Server IP Address button. (Note: Appletalk button active). Entered iMAC IP address in Server Address screen and clicked Connect.
    No connection made.
Then opened Appletalk in Control Panel and noted it is connected via same Ethernet slot as TCP/IP. Therefore returned to Chooser, clicked Appleshare icon and clicked Appletalk inactive button. Upon turning File Sharing on in Control Panel, get warning message, “Appletalk must be turned on to use file sharing.”
As before, iMAC connect to OS 9.1 didn’t work either.
Artnum=302784 indicates Appletalk cannot be used, TCP/IP must. Apparently there is no way to disable Appletalk in OS 9.1 maching when file sharing.
It appears I’ve hit a dead end in trying to get operational file sharing between OS 10.8.4 and OS 9.1 machines.
    Thanks for your help, BDAqua

  • File Sharing with XP and Vista

Hi, I have an WRT54G wireless G router. I have a windows XP computer and a Windows Vista laptop that I would like to enable file sharing on. I am having a lot of problems doing so. Can someone please give me instructions on how to do so? Thanks, Alex

I have the exact same problem, XP desktop connected to WRT54G (wired) and a Vista laptop connect wirelessly.  Every thing works in that the internet connections of both machines work.  I cannot, however, see the two machines in the network neighborhood of the XP desktop.
Before I installed the WRT54G, I had both machines connected to a wired router I previously used.  Networking and file sharing worked fine in this configuration.  Its only when I went to the WRT54G that I lost it.
I'm sure this is a simple fix, but I can't fix it!

  • File sharing with PC and Diskaid: don't see files on iphone

i downloaded FileApp and Diskaid,  But, the files don't transfer to my phone,Help!

Those programs don't install to your phone.  They install to your computer so you can manage files on your iphone using your PC.
Run the program, connect phone to PC using sync / dock cable and the phone should appear in the programs window on your PC so you can then move files on to and off of your phone.
Be very careful that you don't delete or damage system files.  You will end up having to restore your phone when it stops working if you do.

There is not "fix" to be provided, Apple made a decision to not include the file sharing profile.
You are welcome to provide feedback, but after six years, I would not hold your breath.

  • File sharing with multiple users on one Mac

I have two Macs, both of which ca seen each other across the network. My question regards file sharing with multiple users on the same computer. When file sharing, are the files from all users available across the network, or just those of the user presently logged in? The issue is that I am trying to access files from a user who isn't currently logged in, but another user on that computer is. I need to get into that person's documents, but I don't see a way to navigate to their documents folder.

Right, I got that. But the computer is in constant use by User A, while I need access to User B's files. I could need access at anytime, and it would be a pain to make User A log off and log in as User B everytime. I was just wondering if there is anyway to access User B's files in this situation, without logging User B in.

  • File sharing with PC

    Hi,
I'm new to the Mac experience and I'm trying to set-up file sharing with my MacBook and PC and I can't figure it out. I've tried entering the PC's IP address through the Finder - Connect to Server, but I can't get it working.
I would appreciate any suggestions you have to offer! Thanks.

  • File sharing with accounts

I currently have my TC configured for file sharing with a disk password. Lately, however, I find that I have a need to be able to restrict read/write access to certain folders and files based on the user. But, when I select File Sharing "With Accounts" from the drop down I get a warning message stating "Setting up user accounts will make any files already on AirPort disks inaccessible." Seems like a pretty vague warning considering the possible outcome!
Does this mean I will lose access to all existing files already on the TC disk permanently, or just until I configure the accounts with access?
    Thanks for any insight.
    - Don

Is the file sharing the same between the TC and the AirPort Extreme 802.11n (Gigabit Ethernet) with a USB2 connected disk?
My experience is that the network share of the shared disk is different, but no files get lost. One can move between the security mechanisms without losing data. YMMV.
Here are my findings in detail: I was using the shared disk "With a Disk Password". When connecting from a Mac, a single share called like the partition of the disk would automatically mount. On that disk I put some folders "Music" and "Videos" directly in the root of the mounted share. The same volume also had a backup copy of my Mac mini, that I did when it was still locally connected (USB2 directly to the mini) rather than via Disk sharing. From that time there is still a "Users" folders there. One important folder is called "Shared". All folders and their files are accessible.
    "Volumename" (share)
    - Music
    - Photos
    - Videos
    - Shared
    - Users
When I changed from "With a disk password" to "With accounts", I also get the warning about "...will make any files already on AirPort disks inaccessible".
After the change, I have no access to "Music", "Photos" or "Videos" anymore.
However, there is still the share called "Volumename", but now it points to the sub folder "Shared" !!!!
When connecting from either Windows or Mac I see two shares. One called "Volumename" and the other matching the user name. I think the user share actually points to /users/username.
When switching back to "With a disk password", all is like it was before - no files are lost, the "Music", "Photos" and "Videos" folders stay there, and so does all their content.
I will now try to move them into the "Shared" folder, so that the share content after switching to Secure Shared Disk "With Accounts" will look the same as the content looked until now.

  • File Sharing with Firewall

I have 3 computers in my home that I would like to set up a home network. I have a couple of questions I am hoping a Mac friend can help me answer.
    1. If we are all logged on to my airport (that is password protected) would that function as my network
    2. I have my firewall enabled on each computer. Each computer is running 10.3.9. If I enable file sharing for iTunes and so that I can share documents and pictures, do I open up my firewall to the outside world so that others can penetrate. Or is my firewall still active and only those computers on my home network can file share.
    Thanks for your help.

Are you behind a router with a good firewall? If yes, there is no reason to use the Sno firewall. I only use it when on a public network--where I won't be doing any file sharing anyway.

  • File Sharing with AirPort or Ethernet - Both connected, what happens?

Here's the scenario. Two Macs are connected using AirPort to the local wireless network, with an AirPort Extreme Base Station as the router. The two Macs are also connected directly, to each other, using an Ethernet cable.
One Mac is set up to do +File Sharing+ (to be the file server). On the (other) "client" Mac, I want to connect to the "file server" Mac using the direct Ethernet connection (because it is much faster than even 802.11n wireless). For all other networking, including Internet access, I want both Macs to use the AirPort connection. Use Ethernet connection only for file sharing between the two Macs.
*Is there some way to force file sharing to use the Ethernet connection* (not AirPort), when both are available and connected?
I don't want to be too long-winded about what I have tried, but here is want I have observed. If I go to System Preferences Network pane and +Set Service Order+ (under the gear icon) so that AirPort appears first, both Internet access and file sharing use AirPort. If I set it so that Ethernet appears first in the sidebar, file sharing uses Ethernet and Internet access does not work (unless I also enable +Internet Sharing+ on file server Mac). If I switch the service order back to AirPort being first, Internet access goes back to using AirPort, but if I leave the file sharing over Ethernet connected, it continues to work over Ethernet (sometimes); it does not seem consistent. Sometimes it cuts off. Other times, the Internet access over AirPort become problematic.
Secondary question - *Is there some place I can look to see which connection is being used* at a particular moment, for file sharing?
The way I checked was by transferring a large folder and noting the estimated transfer time. A few hours is from AirPort being used; 20-30 minutes is Ethernet being used.
If it matters, the +file server+ Mac is a Power Mac G5 with Leopard and the client Mac is a Mac mini with Snow Leopard. I can make it happen, but the process is convoluted and it does not seem to work reliably or consistently, with either the file sharing or Internet access connection becoming inaccessible until I restart. I am willing to accept +UNIX command line magic+ as a solution; it just has to be a method that works consistently, and is understandable.

I don't understand what you just wrote. There is no category or forum in Apple Discussions that is generally about networking. There is a +Getting Online and Networking+ forum under Snow Leopard, and I suppose I could have posted it there. But if you have advice related to this topic question, I thinks it's OK for you to post a response in this topic, in this forum and category. If you don't know, that's fine. I don't know either. That's why I'm asking.
And this question is hardly +Networking 101+.

  • File Sharing with Lion 10.9.1

We have two iMacs and cannot create shared folders with full permissions between them. Both have of us administration privileges with the other, file sharing is on and both operators are selected as well as a special group with both our names in it. For example, any folder I create on the other computer does not allow the other user to make changes without my going to that computer and changing the permissions using a Get Info window. I have tried the use of SMB sharing only as some have suggested without success. What can we do to solve this problem?

Connect to the server as the user who owns the sharepoint.

  • Wired (Ethernet) Mac Mini file sharing with wireless Windows 7 PC

    Hi Guys,
I'm new to the Mac experience having just bought a Mac Mini so be gentle please. I have the Mini connected to my router & internet the via Cat5 Ethernet cable. I also have a Dell Notebook running Windows 7 connecting wirelessly to that router. How do I get these 2 power-houses of the home computer industry to share files?

Well with 10.6 and windows file sharing follow these steps:
    1. First in windows 7 go to Control Panel. Then in the File sharing panel don't do a Home Group because this is for Windows 7 networks ONLY!. Use the Advanced file sharing to share files.
    2. While still on Windows 7 go to Control Panel-System and get the workgroup name or change it to you want. Also while still in 7 click on the start button in the search box type: cmd . The command line will come up and on the first line type: ipconfig /all . Then write down the Windows 7 IP address (you will need to know this info).
    3. Now in 10.6.x open System Preferences->Network pane, Advanced button. In the drop-down click on the WINS tab and put in the name of the Workgroup name and at the bottom of the pane hit the + button and add the IP address of the Windows 7 machine.
    4. Now click on OS X desktop and click on the Go menu name. In the drop-down select "Connect to Server" . When the panel opens up put in your Windows 7 IP address and connect. The keyboard shortcut for the Connect to Server is the Command key+k. Then log in the Windows 7 with the Windows 7 username and password.
    Any questions?
One more thing: read the how to File Sharing: Snow Leopard And Windows 7.
