OS X won't install to hard drive after downloading

I may be having hard drive problems and may need a new drive but I wanted to try everything before that. I could not boot up this morning.  Just the grey scene and spinning wheel. I called tech support and was instructed to go through a disk repair and repair permissions. The disk repair itself took almost 5 hours. During the scheduled call back with tech support, I was instructed to download and install Mountain Lion, which took about 4 hours. This is where I'm having problems.....the Install OS X screen keeps showing "installing OS X on the disk "Macintosh HD". Time remaining 34 minutes. The barbershop sign shows no movement and the time remaining stays on 34 minutes. Is this indicative of a failed hard drive in need of replacement?

Hello
I have this powerbook g4 running Ubuntu Linux (or it was). Now I wanted to try the OS X so I checked if the firmware had to be updated (on apple.com), and if the current OS X would install on my powerbook. It seemed all was good to go..
But when I try to boot the install cd/dvd it loads the apple logo and the flashlooking 'loading-circle' just to make me feel like success , THEN it either crashed with a distorted apple logo or gives me this 'Corrupt-folder/Kernel panic' logo.
I tried almost everything to fix it, I've read half the internet info on this topic - all with no luck!
Remember I'm new to mac so I might have overlooked something, somewhere..
Can anyone please help me out - I want to have a look at the OS X

  • Mountain Lion Won't Install on hard drive

I am trying to install Mountain Lion on top of Lion on my startup/main sys hard drive.  It says it can't install becuase the drive is not formatted as Mac OS extended with Journaling, use disk utility to turn on journaling or reformat the drive.  When I go to Disk Utility, that option is not available, it is greyed out?  I don't want to reformat the drive and loose everything?  What can I do?

Did you select the partition (indented, under the main line for the drive)?
The sample is on an external, but should be the same on your internal.  If not, please either post a screenshot of yours, or note what's different.
I don't want to reformat the drive and loose everything?  What can I do?
Does that mean you don't have backups?   If not, that's risky.  Hard drives fail, things go wrong, people delete things in error.

  • K8M Neo-V won't boot from hard drive after BIOS flash

But it boots just fine from CD or floppy.
I bought the combo (MB, AMD64 processor, 1G memory) to replace a
motherboard which had died in a previously working system.  At the
same time I replaced the power supply and the video card. When I first
fired it up, it brought up the boot manager from the previous incarnation
of the system, which had been an Athlon-XP.
I never actually let it reboot, since I wanted to redo the OS optimized
for the AMD64 (and the new video card.)  I flashed the motherboard to the
most current version of the BIOS (AMI version 3.5), booted from CD and
installed the OS.  Once I got to the point of being able to boot from the
new system, I removed the CD and proceeded to reboot.
It displayed all the possible boot devices (note that the floppy and CD
    were empty):
Searching for Boot Record from floppy..not found
Searching for Boot Record from CD/DVD..not found
Searching for Boot Record from IDE-0..not found
No matter what I did, I couldn't get the system to boot from the hard
drive.  I reflashed the BIOS back to 3.2, still didn't work.  Since then I
have installed four different operating systems:  Win2k, WinXP, Gentoo
Linux and Debian Linux.  All boot from CD, install perfectly until you get
to the part where the system has to boot on its own, and then nothing.
Has anyone seen this?  Is it possible that there is a problem with how
I've set the BIOS up?  Or a hardware conflict with something else?  Or
    just a bad MB?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Steve

Notihng special in the BIOS drive setup.  Everything is auto-detected and I've pretty much left those settings alone.  At the time of the first flash I probably *did* have SMART enabled.  Once I started having trouble I turned that off, and have never turned it back on.
Boot order has been changed multiple times.  Right now it is floppy -> cd -> ide-0.  I've turned the network boot option off and on again (not that there's a boot server handy...)  I've tried hitting F11 to choose my boot device and specifically selected the HD.  Hasn't made any difference.
I generally turn virus protection off the moment I get a new motherboard.  I'm pretty sure it came disbaled by default, if not I'm sure I disabled it.  Even had it been on, though, any boot block corruption would have to be permanent damage to act like it has, since four subsequent OS installs should have overwritten the boot block four times over.
It might be worth my time to drop a different HD in the primary master slot and see if it can boot from that.  I'll be real unhappy if I've toasted a perfectly good drive.

  • ITunes won't install software on iPhone after downloading, iPhone out of action. Help!

    Hi all,
I recently went to upgrade my iPhone 5 with the iOS8 software through iTunes. Everything was going fine until iTunes prompted me with the following error message:
'Software Update Failed – Error Occurred Downloading,’ ‘Server Could not be Contacted’
I have now attempted to restore my phone several times, as iTunes had removed the previous software through the updating process. However, whenever iTunes has finished downloading the software to perform an install...nothing happens. My phone simply remains with this screen:
    Any ideas???
    - Sam

    try uninstalling and re-installing itunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
or try diff computer first to see if that works
    - also if you have a windows computer, you can try to go into edit- preferences- devices and click "reset sync history" then press ok and try again
    good luck

  • I recently lost my hard drive; after downloading iTunes on my new computer can I download the CD's that are on my iPod to the computer?

Can you transfer the albums from the iPod to iTunes on the computer while sync the two without loosing what is loaded on the iPod?

Content purchased from iTunes can be redownloaded.
Content acquired from other sources will need to be reloaded from those sources, iDevices are NOT backup devices.
The simplest solution, restore all the media from the backup of the old computer.

You don't want to install the software that came with the drive, you don't need it and it will be problematic. Connect the new drive, open Disk Utility, select the new drive and partition it using the GUID partition scheme, then format it as Mac OS extended journaled and it will be easy to use with your Mac.

This is a directory issue that Disk Utility cannot fix. Although it manifests itself as a software issue sometimes it may be hardware based. See DiskUtility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing avolume http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1901?viewlocale=en_US". You can try using a utility like TechTool Pro, Drive Genius or Disk Warrior to repair and replace the directory. Another option would be to use the Archive and Install feature to reinstall. If the problem returns after correction you may have a failing or failed HDD.

install OS X 10.4.2 on the hard drive, I do not see the disk. What is the problem?

    Thanks for the help
I started on the installation CD OS X 10.4.2, I used Disk Utility
to partition the disk according to the document that you have proposed. unfortunately
I have not succeeded. When I partition the disk, even if I called it Macintosh HD, it
does not keep the name and it shows disk0s3 instead. I did an erase on disk.
When I mount the disk it tells me that I must repair. When I tried to repair, I got
    the following message:
    Volume check failed
The underflying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error.
    I also had a message:
    Invalid b-tree node size.
Note: The disc is new, but it has already been formatted on a computer Imac 27 inch 2011 OS X Lion.
I used a USB 2.0 to SATA cable to adjust the formatting.
What to do to fix it?

  • Need Detailed instructions to install new hard drive & upgrade from Vista Home to Win7 Enterprise

    Hi folks,
    I have this laptop machine:
    Lenovo 3000 G530 4446-23U Laptop Computer - Intel Pentium Dual-Core T3400, 2GB DDR2, 160GB HDD, DVDRW, 15.4" WXGA, Vista Home Basic
I need to install another hard drive and I also want to upgrade to Win7 Enterprise Edition while doing the rebuild.
I am very nervous about doing this as I upgraded a W530 from Win7 basic to Win7 Enterprise and ran into all kinds of drive issues.  And I thought that would be about as straightforward as you could get, but it a far cry from that.
I do not want to have to go through that again - I still don't have everything working on it.
Can someone please tell me the precise steps to take to do this upgrade and how to ensure that I obtain ALL the drivers for EVERYTHING on the laptop and how to ensure that all those drivers are correct and exactly how to install them.
If there are other issues associated with upgrading from Vista Home to Win7 Enterprise, please advise of those and the solutions.
    Thanks very much.....
    Gus

    hi gmercanti,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Community.
The easiest way to upgrade Vista to Windows 7 is to run the Windows 7 Installer inside WIndows. Follow this guide for instructions. After upgrading, you will need to install the Windows 7 Drivers for Lenovo G530 4446 via http://support.lenovo.com.
    Spoiler (Highlight to read)
Let me know if you get any errors.
    Cheers

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We're users here and do not speak for "Apple Inc."
Power on the computer and insert the DVD immediately.
Hold down the 'C' key to boot from the Snow Leopard DVD.

After selecting the appropriate language, if necessary, select Utilities, and Disk Utility.
You'll likely need to partition and format the new drive before it's recognized.

Installed new hard drive and windows 7 at the same time. Left old hard drives in computer, installed firefox however I have no idea in which file the old bookmarks are located. I still have the old files for firefox in the old drives.

Your "Firefox personal data", like bookmarks, are stored in your Profile folder in Firefox. See this support article about how to recover that data from that old hard drive and transfer it your your new Profile.

  • Just installed new hard drive in mac book pro 15", when trying to boot OSX from original disk I still get a folder with a question mark in it. How can I reinstall the OS?

Can't seem to get my mac book to boot from the CD after installing new hard drive.
I keep holding down "c" while restarting the machine with the disk in but it just keeps ejecting the disk and giving me a folder with a question mark.

If your on 10.5 with a Intel Mac, I think Apple has jinxed the firmware so you can't boot from the 10.5 disk anymore.
So far several people, myself included, can't boot from a 10.5 OS X disk on a Intel Mac.
Your going to have to buy a 10.6.3 Snow Leopard retail disk, it's wayyy better than 10.5 anyway, faster and most stable even better than Lion. Have to buy iLife though as it doesn't come on the 10.6.3 retail disks, only free with grey disks.

    Hi,
You need two cables, one is a sata cable:
    http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/30305659/706331346/StarTech-com-6in-SATA-to-Right-Angle-SATA-Serial-AT...
This cable is only for data and connects the hdd to the SATA connector on the motherboard.
The other cable is for power:
    http://www.itpartsdirect.com/startech-15-24cm-4-pin-molex-to-sata-power-cable-adaptor.html
This connects the hdd to the PSU.
You can also buy a combo cable like this:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00064GBT4/?tag=hydra0b-21&hvadid=9550951989&ref=asc_df_B00064GBT4
All you have to do now is to connect the hdd and that's it. Make sure that the primary drive with the operating system is connected to the primary SATA connector (I think there are numbers 1, 2, 3..)

  • How to move files after installing new hard drive

I am considering the installation of a new 80 or 100 GB hard drive. I purchased the new iLife 06 program but I do not have enough space to install on my present 60 GB unit. I only have 3 GB available. I've read all the posts involving the possible brands, downloaded the instructions how to swap out the units. My question is how to backup and install my files and applications so I may reinstall onto the new drive. Can I just copy my hard drive volume onto my external Lacie storage unit and then drag the volume back to the new hard drive after booting off my OS disk? Any advice on how to move my apps and files? Do I need to purchase cloning software?

The easiest way is buy an external firewire enclosure and put your new drive in it. Then format your new drive. then use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy your internal drive onto your new drive. Then install your new drive and put your old one in the enclosure. You are now in business with an external backup on your old drive.
