OS-X won't restart after iTunes upgrade

Installed the upgrade of iTunes and QT7 last night and now on re boot my system freezes while in the "loading OSX" screen (reminiscent of Windows blue screen of death >:O), and I have to hold to power button to shutdown the system.
Haven't seen anyone else experiencing this issue yet with the iTunes upgrade.....suggestions?

Grant,
Initially this didn't work (at least not by itself).
Disk repair came back with no errors, with repair permissions reporting several. Upon re-booting, the system froze at the same spot and had to be hard booted to get out of its' locked state.
I had read other threads about people not being able to re-boot after upgrading iTunes, if they had USB peripherals attached. I figured WTH, and disconnected everything but Mouse and Keyboard and did another re-boot and "Whalla!".
I have yet to try it again with all my "stuff" connected to the iMac, so it still is unclear if the disk utilities took care of the problem, or if it was unplugging some of the devices connected. I'll test that this weekend when I have time to trouble shoot the system if it crashes again.
Thanks for your assistance!

  • Intel Mini starts fine, but won't *Restart* after serious upgrades

Experienced Mac user, but stumped with this one:
Picked up a fairly cheap Intel Mini Core Duo to use as a HTPC.
Upgraded the CPU to a T7400 Core 2 Duo, removed the internal SATA drive and added an external 1TB SATA drive in a NewerTech V3 Stacker case as the primary drive for the machine. Installed Leopard, which went fine. Machine has 2GB RAM and boots up just fine. *All is good, except that the machine won't Restart. Starts just fine. Shuts down just fine. But it won't restart.*
I've attempted to zap the PRAM using the old Command-Option-P-R, but all I get is one chime; it won't cycle through multiple times. I've tried resetting the PMU (using the remove cables/wait/insert power cable while pressing power button/press power button again method, but there is no change in the restart behavior. So I'm stumped and could use some suggestions for other things to try.
Anyone on here done any similar upgrades and/or seen similar behavior? Did I forget to reconnect a wire somewhere? If I crack the case again, is there a manual reset I can perform on the PMU? BTW, the behavior is the same regardless of whether the HDD is connected.
    TIA,

Thanks, tried that (and tried it with the CMOS battery removed), and it didn't solve the problem. I'm stumped. I've tried resetting the SMC, which also had no effect on the problem. If I try to zap the PRAM using the traditional four key chord, it will shutdown (with power light still on) but won't reboot. Same if I choose Restart form the Apple menu: it gets the job half done, but won't reboot. So it seems to be a very specific failure: something in the Restart sequence is hanging up, while the Start and Shutdown sequences work fine.
    A puzzler...

  • IPhone won't sync after iTunes Upgrade

I was prompted to upgrade to iTunes v8.1, which I did over the weekend. When trying to install it I get this error message:
“The software you are installing for this hardware:
    DVD/CD-ROM drives
Has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP … “
The install will then carry-on. When go into iTunes I get this error message:
“The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for reporting and burning CD and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes.”
(I had installed other CD burning software, but had deleted it before trying the upgrade). It will let me into iTunes, but when I plug my iphone in, it will charge it, but won’t sync. When I plug the phone in, my laptop does open a box asking me which camera software I want to use.
I’ve tried re-installing iTunes several times (including deleting ‘Apple Mobile Device’), but it hasn't made a difference. My laptop is Windows XP

Wasted hours on this. Solved it in the end & thought the solution might be useful for others. There were 2 problems:
    1. The Gear software drivers were missing / incorrect. Had to re-install them. That didn't work straight away so I then had to edit a registry setting.
    2. The iPhone still was only appearing as an imaging device, not under USB Controllers in Device Manager. I eventually found out that I had to reinstall the drivers. Couldn't find them at first. Finally found them in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
This all happened when I upgraded to iTunes v8.1.

  • G5 Xserver won't restart after security upgrade

I recently installed a security upgrade on my server. Stupid me, I didn't back up the server (no problems before, right?). Rebooted the server, and now it won't boot up. Here's what I've tried...
    1. Starting in Firewire Disk Mode - won't work, I have an a Apple Raid card installed.
    2. Tried restarting from Install cds.
OK, here's another problem. My server is headless. So I go to the local CompUSA and buy an ATI Radeon 7000 - cheap PCI video card, should work with my Mac, right? Nope.
Then I head to Fry's and purchase an ATI Radeo 9250. I know they make a Mac model (9200), so this should work, right? Arggghhh, nope. Guess I'll have to buy the Mac Edition. But I thought I'd try the discussion boards one more time...
Even so, I reviewed the "Headless Installation" instructions, but it doesn't show up as having the install disk inserted.
    3. Tried connecting my MacBook Pro via firewire and try to Apple Desktop Remote In - no luck.
    4. Try to SSH in - says Host is Down.
Now, this server isn't really mission-critical, so losing everything doesn't overly bother me, but I really want to save this if I can. In the past, I've found I've learned a lot when these things happen.
    G5 XServe   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Brent,
It might not be the security update that hosed your server, but instead might have been the Apple Hardware RAID card. I troubleshot a difficult-to-find bug on our Xserve G5 when it was being tested prior to deployment, and the problem turned out to be the Apple Hardware RAID card. Turns out, there is a bug in the firmware whereby the Apple Hardware RAID sometimes disconnects from the drives during graceful power down (but not on a restart) before it has finished fully flushing the write caches. LSI Logic fixed this bug in subsequent firmware that only works on their Windows version of the card (the Apple Hardware RAID card is a rebranded LSI Logic megaraid card); Apple split their code off the LSI code tree prior to this fix, and hasn't updated their version of the firmware that was created for the Xserve version of the card.
Causes mystery garbage blocks from space. Only workaround that I know is to turn off the write caches for all LUNs on the Apple Hardware RAID card.
I turned in a RADAR report (RADAR Problem ID 4350243) back in November 2005, and I keep following up every four or so months, no progress, and I never get any feedback from Apple except a report that the bug is still open. I don't expect this bug to ever be fixed because the Xserve G5 is EOL, as is the Apple Hardware RAID card.
So, if you happened to shut your server down rather than restart, you could have some garbage somewhere on your disks because of this bug.
    Good luck.

  • TS1453 after itunes upgraded to latest 11.0.2.26 apple tv (1st gen)does not show up anywhere in itunes

After Itunes upgraded to latest version 11.0.2.26 Apple TV (1st gen) does not show up anywhere in Itunes

I have the same problem. It was working fine up until the last update for iTunes 11.0.2
    Here's the details:
I have an Apple TV - first Gen and up until a couple of weeks ago, was regularly playing sync'd iTunes music and videos through it on a daily basis.
I see other devicess showing up in the "Devices" list in the left panel of iTunes (such as iPad, iPhone, etc.)
AppleTV used to be there consistently, then disappeared upon update to 11.0.2
Apple TV also does not show up in the devices tab under the Preferences window.
I have tried multiple suggestions on the support forum but none have worked.
Apple TV is able to access the network, is on the same network as the iMac with iTunes library connected. Both are connected to network via ethernet cable (not wifi). Both are able to access the internet (apple tv plays movie prieviews and gets updates). Using the Terminal app, I am able to ping the apple TV's IP number from the iMac and get a successful return.
    Both have latest software downloads.
I have tried cold-booting the apple TV, resetting the router, and verified in the router device list that both imac and appleTV are listed as active, un-blocked connections.
I don't intend to buy an Apple TV 2nd gen or later (since I bought this one and it's not working now due to software update, what guarantee that a later model won't generate the same problem later.
One last wrinkle, I have a 2 year old and a 5 year old who are jonesing hard for their "dance party" fix.
Have you ever wronged a two year old?
    It is NOT pretty.
Help me Apple-wan-kenobi...I can't take the screaming!

  • Mac won't restart after updating to OS X Mountain Lion

Mac won't restart after updating to OS X Mountain Lion. Please help?

Like what happens?  Is it just spinning?
If you've waited sufficiently long (say 10 minutes) you could just hit the power button which will do the trick.  A little more gentle would be to open a terminal window (if you can) and type 'sudo reboot' (without the quotes) and enter your password when it asks.  That will do it too.

  • Mac mini won't boot after RAM upgrade.

Tried installing new RAM in my Mac Mini, 512MB stock to 2GB of Crucial. Followed the directions to a T, grounded myself the whole time.
    Things I've tried so far:
    1. Resetting the PRAM, no luck.
    2. Holding option at start-up, shows no icon.
    3. Holding shift, no luck.
    4. Holding X, nothing.
How do I get it to accept a CD if it won't boot?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You clearly have a problem, but you don't describe exactly what that is other than that your mini won't boot after the upgrade. What happens when it starts up? Does it attempt to start and hang up on the grey or blue screens, or does it start beeping at you almost immediately after you try and start it up, and also flash the power light?
If the former, then you may have dislodged a connector while working inside the system, in which case opening it up and checking that everything is firmly connected would be the first thing to do. If the latter, then the beeping/light flashing is the system telling you it has failed the power-on self test and the pattern of beeps/lights indicates why. In your case likely the system can't find workable memory. In that instance, opening the system and ensuring that the RAM is firmly and fully seated would be a good step, and if the mini continues to fail, then replacing the new RAM with the original to test that the system will then start.
It is not likely that anything had damaged your MacOS install in the process of upgrading, thus normally no reason to need to boot to CD as a result of a RAM issue.

  • ITunes search function suddenly won't work, pending iTunes upgrade.

I have an old (2002) 16-bit PC, which won't support an iTunes upgrade. I've tried to upgrade (from 7.1) before, but it crashed the machine (and I lost ALL my music), so I've stayed with 7.1 and until now everything -- including the iTunes store and the search function -- has worked just fine.  But suddenly, when I go to the iTunes store to buy new music, it presents an "Upgrade to iTunes 10" screen, and the search function won't work at all.  I'm locked out until I upgrade, but I can't upgrade.  Help?

Your QT may work fine but is it the most current v7.1.3? This is not to say that this will resolve your problem. You might try to d/l the 10.4.6 combo update and reinstall the upgrade to the system. That might resolve the problem.
I would wait until the new year and then upgrade to iLife07. No sense in buying 06 if 07 is around the corner.
You can downgrade to an earlier version of an app. To downgrade iTunes you would need to remove the receipt from HD>Library>Receipts>iTunesX.pkg. You will also need the .dmg of the version you want to reinstall. Old iTune versions are avalable at http://www.oldapps.com/downloadiTunesmac.php
You can get old iPhoto at http://www.oldapps.com/iPhoto.php - instructions here http://www.oldapps.com/forum/showthread.php?p=545
To downgrade your OS you will need to reload the original OS from the system disks that you have then upgrade to the level that you want.
    As always b/u before proceeding.

  • IMessages won't open after Mavericks upgrade

iMessages won't open after I upgraded to Mavericks. I keep getting prompted to "enter the keychain password," but I never created a keychain. I never used it before the upgrade, and I skipped the step during the upgrade because I did not want to use keychain and it was an option to skip it during set up.

    HI,
The OS X Mac have been using Keychains for a long time.
In the Applications/Utilities folder open Keychain Access.
This should show you at least two keychains.
The Login one for your Mac User account and the System one.
Generally speaking the Keychain keeps the passwords used by various apps and it needs to be Open.
In most cases the Login password for the Mac Account user is also the password that opens the Keychian when the computer is started up.
As each Mac User Account owns it's own Keychain there can be issues when you drag an account from one computer to another rather than using Migration Assistant.
i.e. you might Own it on one computer but not on another.
In the Finder > Go Menu hold down the ALT key and select the Library that appears.
In the library navigate to Keychains.
Click to highlight the Login one.
Now use the CMD and i keys together (Get Info)
At the Bottom unlock the padlock
Highlight the name that has (me) next to it (it should be your Shortname).
Once you have highlighted this use the cogwheel item at the bottom.
This should be greyed out but saying "Make you (Me) the Owner."
You should also have Read and Write permissions like in the Pic.
