OS X wont start just grey screen

I was on my mom's computer(same model and OS as mine) setting up her new ipod. I was prompted to update the ipod software and did so. I believe the update was successful but afterwards the computer froze, and i tried to force quit itunes. This did not work so i held down the power button and turned the computer off. Then i turned it back on and it only comes to the grey screen with the apple logo. I have tried the following in this order:
-reset PRAM
-boot in Safe mode(holding shift key)
-insert install disk and repair permissions
none have produced any results.
thanks in advance

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.

  • Brand new OS X Mountain Lion starts in grey screen login window doesn't know me verify passwords all jacked up says to get external hard drive recovery so I have to spend more moneyon my brand new computer or can I fix and safe boot

brand new OS X Mountain Lion  Bought in November 2012 starts in grey screen login window doesn't know me, went to utility dIsk ,verify passwords all jacked up, I Engaged repair passwords then press verified Macintosh HD it said Macintosh HD is OK but repair disk button was still lit up and wanted me to make a recovery disk external hard drive and such, please tell me I can fix in safe boot..

The repair button is always clickable when you are on your Recovery partition, it's nothing to worry about.  Do this instead.
Then start in single user mode (Command-S)
Type fsck -fy to check your disk first (it wont let you start working on a disk until you have checked it)
Then type mount -uw / (dont forget the slash) to mount your Macintosh HDD
Then type passwd username with username being the username of your admin account
It will make you type the new password twice afterwards. From then you can boot into OSX as normal and use that account to fix the rest of your passwords.

  • New Mac froze overnight. Tried to power up just grey screen spinning.

New 21.5 iMac froze over night. Now just grey screen spinning wheel. No safe mode. Able to boot up in recovery disc once. Fixed permissions ? Restarted to no resolve. Tried again but mouse not working past mouse start up click freeze...  Have also looked and found a problem boot cache control : unable to open..
Any ideas any one this Mac is 3 weeks old

    I'd return it myself, but...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • My G5 won't start beyond grey screen

    Hi Folks,
My G5 won't start beyond grey screen with the logo on it. The fans simply get louder and louder.
It acts as our server and the raid drive on it had been having privileges problems. One person on another forum suggested I run Disc Utility to repair permissions. I did so, there were a couple of minor permissions fixed. After that, the Mac would not re-boot.
I got the DVD door open and ran Disk Warrior on the drive, the files and the hardware. It claimed to repair a few minor issues and there were no problems with the hardware. It still wouldn't boot, so I reset the SMU. ?Still no start, so I reset the PRAM. Still the same.
    Any ideas?
G5, OSX 10.5.6, 6 GB ram, approximately 100 GB free on system drive, over 800 GB free on RAID.

I'm having the same problem though I'm running 10.4.11. After getting to about the point you are at did an "Archive and Install" but after about a day of working fine, it had a kernal panic and I couldn't boot past the gray screen again. I took it to my local Apple Store and they ran 2 hours of diagnostics w/o finding anything wrong. They told me to do an "Erase and Install." That is where I am at now because I can't get the machine to boot from my 10.3.5 Install CD--it hangs at the black screen when I try to boot from the CD by holding down "C" at boot. This is the original system software that came with the machine at purchase.
There are many posts out there about bad RAM causing these kinds of problems. You might want to search around for those posts.
Good luck and I'm going to watch this thread hoping that someone will have a suggestion that will help me too.

  • MacBook Pro failing to start up after fairly recent 10.8.4 update. Just grey screen with Apple logo displayed and then hangs.

After having to do a forced shut down (holding down power button) due to freezing I cannot again progress past the grey screen with the apple logo. The spinning cog comes on at first then disappears leaving just the apple logo (in case that is sognificant).
I have tried to find a solution through the support pages but have unfortunately been unsuccessful in my endeavours so do apologise I have overlooked the obvious and would really appreciate some help. I've just started the second year of my Uni and the timing couldn't be worse.
    I have tried the following:
    1) held down option and started in "recovery 10.8.4" from which I used disk utility to "repair disk", which at first needed some repairs and then I ran it again for the second time to confirm it had a clean bill of health.
    2) I then ran "repair disk permissions" and repeated a second time to confirm it was all working well (however one error remained "warning: SUID file "system/library/CoreS... has been modified and will not be repaired" but have read that this should not be a big problem) After which I tried to start up again and it hung with the apple logo on the grey screen.
    3) tried resetting the PRAM by holding down cmd+option+P+R before powering up, but it only chimes once and then restarts the mac, then chimes once and repeats the process again in and endless cycle.
    4) I then tried 1 and 2 again and then tried to reinstall OSX 10.8.4 from the recovery mode, but this came up with the message "could not find installation information for this machine".
    5) I tried starting up in safe mode by holding down shift after the chime at startup but safe mode did not start after leaving it 3 hours.
    6) I tried starting in verbose mode with cmd+V but after running the script it reverts back to the grey screen.
I hope I have explained it in enough detail and appreciate any direction or thoughts as to it being salvageable and what to try next.
    Many thanks

    Eric
Thank you for taking the time to post those links to informative articles.
In relation to the first article entitled "Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck"
I can confirm that i was not able to start in safe mode but was able to boot up in recovery mode and run disk utility. The only one i hadn't tried is fsck.  Please correct me if I am wrong, but if from what I understand by the article, this is to be used if I could not run disk utility, with which I have been able to do and to repair both the disk and permissions. But again, if I've missed the obvious from that article please correct me.
Te second article entitled "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" identifies troubleshooting that should be carried out in safe mode. However I am unfortunately unable to start in safe mode and have not been able to progress past the apple logo since this problem started.
Thank you for both links and for taking the time to share. If though I have missed something more significant in this regard I would appreciate your feedback.
    Many thanks

Just tried to upgrade to SnowLeopard with newly purchased software disc. iLife failed to download and when I tried to restart the computer, it will not do so--just get a grey screen with the lines going around and around. Any ideas about how to get it to start?

  • Imac G4 wont boot past grey screen desperatly want to fix it!!!!

    Hi there,
    Please can someone help.....
I got a Imac G4 at the weekend for a bargin, but it wont boot up.  When i turn it on it makes the noise and comes up with a grey screen with the apple logo and the loading circle.  It doesnt go past this screen and after about 15 mins turns itself off.
Any ideas how i can get this running again (havent tried anything yet to be honest as im not sure what to do).  I love these machines as i just think they are querky and would love to get it working again to use as my home pc (as even though its old it will still probably be quicker than my old microsoft laptop)
    Thanks!

Did you try a PRAM reset?

    >I can't get the disk drive to open either
If  the optical drive tray cannot be opened, what happens if you hold down the mouse button during startup?
As a brody indicated, a faulty hard drive cannot be ruled out. Instructions for removing this drive can be found in the ifixit.com guides as well.
If you can gain access to the optical drive, the best way forward would be to use an appropriate Mac OS X system CD in an attempt to start from that disc (holding down the C key).
If it is not possible to locate a correct system CD right now, another way could possibly be to try to boot from an Ubuntu CD for PowerPC instead (once again, holding down the C key) just to see whether the computer is capable of booting at all.

  • Macbook won't start past grey screen/apple; won't start OS disc

I know this issue has probably been talked about a million times, but I still can't seem to find a working answer... and what better to make my first post than this problem?
Anyway, I was streaming a movie online on my 13 inch black Macbook (OS: Leopard; Bought: 2007), when I suddenly had to leave... so I closed my computer and left.  A while later when I came back, the computer was off.  I tried to turn it on, but it only got to the grey screen with the Apple and spinning wheel, which I've let sit for upwards of an hour before giving up.  Anyway, I reset the PRAM, and of course even tried to start from the OS disc (Leaopard Disc, original OS dvd that came with it, and even a Snow Leopard disc), but the disc never loads.  I have rebooted while pressing Option, and the disc shows up but when I click on the arrow it just goes back to the grey screen/apple logo/spinning wheel for a while before I get frustrated and turn it off.
Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions or can help me out I would be eternally grateful.  I don't want to have to take it to the Apple store (I'm a pretty broke college student), and I have backups of everything on my HD so reinstalling the OS is no issue to me.  I'm just willing to do whatever I can to get it working.  Thank you, and again sorry for probably repeating what millions have before me.

  • TS2570 macbook air : start with grey screen... help !!!

I have a new macbook air (3 months old) and all the sudden when I start it I have a grey screen with a question mark. The relevant Apple support page doesn't take into consideration the fact that you can't put an install disk into a macbook air. Help !

    Thank you for your answer.
Unfortunately, I had already tried this online recovery (it also works if you boot holding the option) but the utility program didn't offer me the possibility to repair (when I selected the disk, this option wasn't available. In fact, I couldn't choose any option at all for my disk).
I had just done the last system update proposed by Apple today. I never had any problem with a mac before and I am really in trouble in my work because of that. How can I try to save the most important files I was working on ? I am in Brazil so there is no Apple store available near my house.
I also have external hard disk, an imac and a macbook but I don't know if I can use any of them for that...

  • Start-up grey screen lock and waking issues

Hello, I've been having several problems with my iMac G5 that seemed to all start at the same time just in this last week:
1/ Trouble starting computer - during start up the usual tone is heard, then a grey screen appears and the start up process stops. I am forced to restart and try again. After several attempts the computer makes it to the grey apple logo and it finally starts up. The computer works perfectly once it is finally on all of the way - except for the following sleep thing . . .
2/ computer won't start up again after sleeping - EITHER screen remains black and fan noise is heard, OR screen image comes back but then distorts slightly, a dark gray washes over it, and a restart notice appears (also distorted).
I have tried the follwing techniques to fix the problems:
    - Disc Utility check: everything fine
    - Hardware Test from disk: everything fine
    - Re-set PRAM
    - Tried starting holding down Option Key - had to shut down after endless wait
    - Looked for new firmware - what I found didn't help
    - Removed new Software - no change
    - Tested with various peripherals disconnected - no dice
I have NOT tried Safe Boot - safe mode would turn off many of the functions I use most.
I'm not sure what else I can do. I am, of course, aware of the "Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues" but as I live in Japan, outside Tokyo, it is going to be a long haul to get my computer in to be looked at.
Could this be fixed any other way by me? Or does this sound like a classic "G5 power/video issue" and I should just bite it and take it in?
Many thanks for your time in replying,

Hi Corrie, welcome to Discussions. Unfortunately I think you hit the nail right on the head. I would find a way to get this done with extension program because paying to fix it maybe cost inhibitive. (could you ship it to a friend or relative in the USA and have them take it in)???
For the sleep/wake issue you can try resetting the SMU, read the link below and it will show you how. Good luck Bob

  • Start-up Grey Screen Shows Apple Sign, Prohibited Sign (Mostly), Folder w/Question Mark

    Ok, I need help!
When I start my mac up it automatically goes to a grey screen and shows a rapidly flashing apple sign, prohibited sign, and every couple of seconds a folder sign with a question mark.
I just deleted alot of stuff off of my computer and I think I probably deleted something that I shouldn't have, which is probably causing this problem.
I have the operating system of the snow leopard X, but I dont have any type of utility discs to the mac to reinstall the program if thats what I even need to do? I am not sure?
I have checked the drive already and it shows that I have one. Machintosh with an arrow sign point up.  When you click the sign it goes back to the grey screen again.
And I did the command, option, p, and r thing to reset the pram and nvram, and again it just takes me to the grey screen again.
I dont know what to do...please help me. I just need the computer to work again. I dont really care about any of the files on the computer!

Thsi usually means it can't start from the volume, You will need the install disk to try to run the disk utilities to repair the disk if possible, or reinstall the OSX.
If you do not have the install disks(s) that came with the machine you may be able to get them from Apple for a small fee.Try calling Customer Support
    800-767-2275
It may also have a hardware failure.
You can bring in to the Apple store and they will diagnose it for free and give your options.

  • Zen 8gb showing just grey screen

I'm extremely annoyed, this happened about a few months ago..before i'd be able to use it by putting it on hold for a bit then setting it back and the screen would show up..now it's just stuck on the grey screen.
I've tried everything..resetting firmware, using the settings menu in it to reset everything and format to clear the entire player..it worked for a few days then it started doing the same thing again.. I was gonna try and reset it but now it's just stuck on the grey and no matter what I do I can't get it to show anything else.
    Help would be appreciated.

However, you likely have a hardware problem since it started after dropping the iPod.  If the toubleshooting does not solve the peroblem then make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
