OS X Yosemite Safari memory usage

Safari's memory usage under Yosemite continues to increase until system stalls due to paging. The memory gets to about 60G before the stall. Also, the process SafariDAVclient exhibits the same behavior. This started after I reinstalled Yosemite. Reinstalled again, no better.
Anyone have a solution?

  • Yosemite & SystemUIServer Memory Usage Keeps Rising!

So with Mavericks, had no issue whatsoever, but Yosemite has created an issue. I have a thunderbolt to HDMI connected up to my tv so I can watch my series and Movies etc. But now, when I turn the tv on, a new processor starts - SystemUIServer - and it starts eating up memory that doesn't even exist - I'm talking about like 56G memory and it carries on climbing. I've forced it to stop but with the External display still on, it starts up again. I haven't found a solution for this anywhere and want to know if anyone knows how to fix it. I even made a video in case you don't understand what I mean - http://youtu.be/Bnf-DqBES3c

I was having this issue as well with my Mid 2014 Retina MacBook Pro, Yosemite 10.10, and thunderbolt to VGA adapter. No problems with a thunderbolt monitor, USB-connected monitor, or HDMI-connected monitor.
Just tried again with 10.10.1 and it seems to be working fine now.

Hi, i recently noticed that my MacBoo Pro was with low performance after some hours of use.
I'm a heavy user, so I try to monitor what might be causing it. What i note was:
    After restart (or fresh start), my computer was ok;
    I use applications like adobe Lightroom and VMWare Fusion;
Then I star feeling like Safari was too slow to open pages - I thought it was the internet link first, but even local webpages are slow. I notice that when a click to close a tab, it take almost 2 sec to do it. The same when click to open any link on that page.
I start the activity monitor, but my proc usage are low. Then, I notice the (weird) memory usage:
Take a look at "memory used". I closed all applications before take this screenshot. i've trying to identify what is consuming this memory, but.. no success.
Anyone has any idea what can might be causing it?
    My HW information:
    all my apps are updated.

Memory usage was normal when you took that screenshot.
When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • Flash player memory usage Safari 5.1.7;  OS X 10.7.4

I've heard quite a bit about the relationship between Apple and Flash but since getting my laptop I've noticed that the two aren't getting along. While browsing the web (±4 tabs, 2 with music playing on youtube) I realised that my brand spanking new MBP was freezing up on me. I checked the activity monitor and noticed that I only had 18mb of RAM free, after checking the processes I found flash player was the culprit.
It was using a whopping 900+mb of RAM which is almost a fourth of the available memory. I closed the rest of my applications and freed up another 300mb but within about 5 minutes flash player had eaten up all of that as well. I'm not sure if this is considered a memory leak but I am pretty sure that this is not normal.
Any suggestions? My friend who uses Firefox also said he was facing the same problem, so I don't know if switching browser will help.
    - Camel

I am having difficulty reproducing my trader desktop result using the blazeds sample application.  So either I was mistaken, or perhaps I have a newer version than what I tested with originally.
I can reproduce the issue with our Flex application on the latest release of the flash player.  Using chrome and 11.3.300.262 there is a noted increase in memory utilization of between 50-100MB/hour.  This is a real time messaging dashboard application that constantly updates prices displayed in charts and tickers using Adobe messaging.
On 11.2.2.144 on the same installation of chrome this application reaches an initial memory utilization and then stays at or close to that memory level indefinitely - though memory usage will increase slightly as more and more data points are added to the charts displayed - nothing like 50-100MB/hour.
I would need to give your people access to our application as it's not publicly accessible.  So again, please contact me - flashbug at vanderberg.fastmail.fm to arrange those details.

  • Internet Explorer - Memory Usage

    Hi,
I have developed a VC model and deployed it in the portal. When i execute the model in internet explorer 7 or 6, the memory usage keeps building up and does not drop even after getting all the data. I have got couple of popup iviews in the model which when executed increases the memory usage further more and eventually internet explorer stops responding.
Currently the only way to clear the memory is to close the Internet explorer window. Is there any other way to flush out the memory after the data has been retrieved from the back-end.
    Regards,
    Ravi.

    Hi Ravi,
I googled in and found few links which can be helpful to you.
http://cybernetnews.com/browser-comparison-internet-explorer-firefox-chrome-safari-opera/ - which is all abut the memory tests which were conducted for various browsers including ie regarding the usage of memory.
    http://www.bigresource.com/PHP-Flush-clearing-buffer-3rXPLSop.html
http://www.wimpyplayer.com/docs/howto/clear_cache.html - which tells about the way to flush out the browser memory for better usage.

  • "Installer" high memory usage

Hey Guys, I been having problems with my mac. I'm running 10.8.5 on my 2008 Power mac tower and recently I have been having problems with my mac
going real slow. I opened Activity Monitor and Noticed something called "Installer" and it was using 90% of my memory and the only thing I can do is quit the process. Does anyone know why this is happening?

I ran EtreCheck and i'll post my results. I will add more ram after I fix the problem, and adding an SSD is a good option. I thought about it but
I was holding off because I was thinking of buying a new computer. I will try to keep my sysstem drive clean in the future. After Linc Davis posted about the Trojan i'm planning of doing that. I have a cloned mac drive, I updated the other day using SuperDuper.

  • Please make the memory usage built-up a top priority to problemsolve.

Hi, Firefox is my favorite browser on OSX) , but the memory usage is really getting annoying. It's been 2 yrs and I have to restart Firefox every couple of hours to keep the memory usage in check. If i don't do that
I think this is a serious issue with your browser. None of the other browsers (Safari, Chrome)I use have this problem, however they're not that user-friendly in my opinion.
Like I said it has been 2 yrs and the forums are filled with this topic, without any real solutions, are there actually people on this problem? It's a pretty big problem, and honestly I don't understand why there's no correspondence from Firefox, that they acknowledge the problem and they're working on it or something.
Before those 2 yrs, never a hitch. The problem must've been introduced since FF21 or 22, not sure.
I'm experiencing exactly the same as "Cyberpawz":
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/958108?page=6
I'm a avid Firefox user and just want the voices of the users experiencing this problem to be heard. And ofcourse the problem to be resolved.
    Thanks for listening!

The memory issues will be real problems, just look at the viewing stats on the thread you linked to
    '' 104 replies, 94 have this problem, 7788 views ''
The easy problems will have been identified and fixed. The difficult or least common ones need users able to help troubleshoot and most just want to complain not file bugs, (Please note such bugs will likely only be followed up if it is a Firefox bug or a problem with a single popular addon).
If you follow the advice from ''Cor-el'' and try with a new profile with all plugins disabled you should find the problem goes away.

  • Why is my memory usage quickly reaching my max RAM, even after a reboot?

Okay so, I have a macbook with 8GB of RAM and just recently I noticed some issues while playing my gambit of online games.  Naturally I closed them out and checked my activity monitor and noticed that my RAM usage was at 7.99GB.  I figured restarting would fix this issue and for a moment it seemed to.  However my memory usage quickly climbed back up to very nearly 8GB.
Now I am not one to fret over high RAM usage but in this case my entire computer is running slowly and most of my 'heavier' applications are refusing to launch at all.  My network is also seems to be choked, it was never fast but when I open a program that uses the internet I get maybe 5KB/s, laughable really.
It seems like within a few minutes of using my laptop the memory climbs rapidly then I'm right back in the same mess in about 4 minutes.  This seems like some memory leak issue, but the odd thing is none of the processes look to be memory hungry.  All the processes in the activity monitor account for about 1.7GB of RAM yet the memory usage is already back to 7.97GB and I am just running FireFox and Safari at the moment.
Any help or input would be greatly appreciated!

  • Safari memory leak

does anyone have any idea if this will EVER be resolved. If I leave my safari open it gradually eats up all my ram!
Its been happening for tooooo long.
    I expect more from Apple.

    Hi Laura
Yes, the memory leak is a definite problem that people in the open-source community along with Apple are attempting to resolve. To some extent, the same problem occurs with Firefox. Best remedy at the moment is to "quit Safari", then restart, which resets the memory requirement to a more manageable level.
I have noticed certain web sites tick up the memory usage, called "World Leaks". Some of these are Java driven sites, others Flash driven. Even some of Apple's web site pages seem to contribute. The web is evolving rapidly. It's quite a can of worms to contain, monitor and coordinate.
Hope that helps clarify this issue.

  • Safari Memory Leak (especially with Google Reader)

Safari starts gobbling up memory with use, never releasing it. I have turned off extensions, moved all internet plugins to disabled directory, restarted, etc. but nothing helps. Right now its sitting at 1.5GB real memory usage.
One quick way for me to replicate this issue is to go through a few hundred google reader items. It never releases memory even when I close that google reader tab. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

    Hi
If a new account is the same, you've done it all; bar a fresh install, unless you're quite certain everything's as standard...

  • Withdraw permission allowing you to monitor memory usage

I now often have to either force quit, reboot and have started having kernel "panics" since I agreed to allow Firefox monitor CPU usage. I am still running OS X 10.6.8 on my Mac's. I have had no problems with anything since installing that OS X.
However, from time to time with the latest install of Firefox 7.0.1 I find that the program and/or my computer "locks" up and appears unresponsive. I left Firefox active and resident on my computer last night and again everything will non-responsive. I opened activity monitor and noticed that Firefox was consuming 283 MB of real memory (at present 298.6 MB) and I have this an an other tab for the Seattle Times open. I withdraw my permission to allow Firefox to monitor my memory usage and need to know how to remove the cookie or what ever governs that)

Come on Firefox! Since your upgrades starting with FF4, Firefox has been acting like garage. It locks up constantly and I find myself having to use FF3.6.23 just to get my work done.
The most frustrating thing is we never hear from you. We don't know if you hear us, if you're working on it, or if you just plain don't care! I've been reacquainting myself with Safari and Google Chrome just in case I get so fed up I can't take it any more.
I believe you're monitoring mine also.
I'm on a March 2007 Mac Book Pro using OSX 10.6.8

  • Is SL giving maximum priority on memory usage to disk cache???

Pretty much every time I need to work with large files - be it video files, archiving or unarchiving large files, or working with VMWare images - the system quickly runs out of memory and starts swapping profusely. The swap file grows to 2-4 gigabytes pretty quickly, the system becomes unresponsive etc...
I have the latest MacBook Pro 2009 with 4G of RAM, and right after system reboot it shows about 2.8G of free memory, and 0 in swap.
Then I start VMWare, for example, which only uses about 500-600 megabytes of RAM. After some time working with it, the amount of free memory in Mac OS X steadily decreases, and then it starts swapping, and the swap keeps growing... The system becomes slower and slower, but yet, Activity Monitor is still showing that VMWare is using about 500-600 megabytes of memory. At the same time it shows about 2 gigabytes of Active memory, and about 1G of inactive memory, and about 800 megabytes of "wired" memory...
Where the **** did all the memory go??? Did system use it all for disk cache, trying to keep all disk images that VMWare is working with, in it at the expense of physical RAM available to other processes? If it is so - that's VERY silly, and while it may give an appearance of "snappiness" with small amount of simple applications that don't do much, it becomes a MAJOR problem for applications that work with large files - iMovie, VMWare, any other media processing application, cause Mac OS X to start swapping and beachballing, and become unresponsive after certain time of work, while the swap file keeps growing, yet the amount of memory used by those applications shown by Activity Monitor staying around 100-500 megabytes.
I've been working with JES Deinterlacer the other day - trying to convert a 1080i/30fps video into a 720p/60fps one. The file was about 23 gigabytes in size. Besides that I've only had Mail and Safari open. Before I started the deinterlacing process, there was about 1.5G of free memory. After it started, the amount has been going down steadily, until the system started swapping and become unusable after awhile. The deinterlacing process also slowed down significantly (my guess is - again - the system tried to give memory needed by JES Deinterlacer to the disk cache for the file it's been processing). There's no point in caching that file at all - there's 0 chances the application will ever need to jump back to the parts of the file it's already processed! Or to read any parts of the new file it's created!
What's other people's experience working with large files in Snow Leopard? Any Final Cut users? Or iMovie? Does your system exhibit the same behavior? Have you tried monitoring memory usage while you work with any of the applications that work with large files?

Having exactly the same issue. However, I cannot even get VMware to start. It gives me a "could not open paging file" message and never opens. I have also had strange random crashes recently where it seems to run out of memory and then the force quick dialogue opens and usually Safari, Entourage, or Aperture are frozen or paused. Really getting to be a big issue.
I contacted VMware and they looked at all the logs, had me try one change to an internal VM file, but without success. They now are suggesting that based on the logs, it is an OSX paging issue and that I need to do an archive and install!!! No way do I want to do that after just migrating to this new machine and getting everything set up so well!
Need some alternative ideas. Actually hoping 10.6.2 comes out and solves it!

  • Problem with Firefox and very heavy memory usage

For several releases now, Firefox has been particularly heavy on memory usage. With its most recent version, with a single browser instance and only one tab, Firefox consumes more memory that any other application running on my Windows PC. The memory footprint grows significantly as I open additional tabs, getting to almost 1GB when there are 7 or 8 tabs open. This is as true with no extensions or pluggins, and with the usual set, (firebug, fire cookie, fireshot, XMarks). Right now, with 2 tabs, the memory is at 217,128K and climbing, CPU is between 0.2 and 1.5%.
I have read dozens of threads providing "helpful" suggestions, and tried any that seem reasonable. But like most others who experience Firebug's memory problems, none address the issue.
Firefox is an excellent tool for web developers, and I rely on it heavily, but have now resorted to using Chrome as the default and only open Firefox when I must, in order to test or debug a page.
Is there no hope of resolving this problem? So far, from responses to other similar threads, the response has been to deny any responsibility and blame extensions and/or pluggins. This is not helpful and not accurate. Will Firefox accept ownership for this problem and try to address it properly, or must we continue to suffer for your failings?

55%, it's still 1.6Gb....there shouldn't be a problem scanning something that it says will take up 300Mb, then actually only takes up 70Mb.
And not wrong, it obviously isn't releasing the memory when other applications need it because it doesn't, I have to close PS before it will release it. Yes, it probably is supposed to release it, but it isn't.
Thank you for your answer (even if it did appear to me to be a bit rude/shouty, perhaps something more polite than "Wrong!" next time) but I'm sitting at my computer, and I can see what is using how much memory and when, you can't.

  • Problem with scanning and memory usage

I'm running PS CS3 on Vista Home Premium, 1.86Ghz Intel core 2 processor, and 4GB RAM.
I realise Vista only sees 3.3GB of this RAM, and I know Vista uses about 1GB all the time.
    Question:
While running PS, and only PS, with no files open, I have 2GB of RAM, why will PS not let me scan a file that it says will take up 300Mb?
200Mb is about the limit that it will let me scan, but even then, the actual end product ends up being less than 100Mb. (around 70mb in most cases)I'm using a Dell AIO A920, latest drivers etc, and PS is set to use all avaliable RAM.
Not only will it not let me scan, once a file I've opened has used up "x" amount of RAM, even if I then close that file, "x" amount of RAM will STILL be unavaliable. This means if I scan something, I have to save it, close PS, then open it again before I can scan anything else.
Surely this isn't normal. Or am I being stupid and missing something obvious?
I've also monitored the memory usage during scanning using task manager and various other things, it hardly goes up at all, then shoots up to 70-80% once the 70ishMb file is loaded. Something is up because if that were true, I'd actually only have 1Gb of RAM, and running Vista would be nearly impossible.
It's not a Vista thing either as I had this problem when I had XP. In fact it was worse then, I could hardly scan anything, had to be very low resolution.
Thanks in advance for any help

55%, it's still 1.6Gb....there shouldn't be a problem scanning something that it says will take up 300Mb, then actually only takes up 70Mb.
And not wrong, it obviously isn't releasing the memory when other applications need it because it doesn't, I have to close PS before it will release it. Yes, it probably is supposed to release it, but it isn't.
Thank you for your answer (even if it did appear to me to be a bit rude/shouty, perhaps something more polite than "Wrong!" next time) but I'm sitting at my computer, and I can see what is using how much memory and when, you can't.

  • Problem with JTree and memory usage

I have problem with the JTree when memory usage is over the phisical memory( I have 512MB).
I use JTree to display very large data about structure organization of big company. It is working fine until memory usage is over the phisical memory - then some of nodes are not visible.
I hope somebody has an idea about this problem.
