Yosemite upgrade slowing down my Macbook
Hi - I recently upgraded to Yosemite OS X and it has slowed down my Macbook (2011 model, 2Gb RAM). Everything runs painfully slow - booting up, opening any applications, opening Chrome, Thunderbird - EVERYTHING. Its been suggested I add RAM but not being a techie Mac user i havent a clue how to do that and not really sure i want to throw more RAM at an old-ish machine. I read on the forum about EtreCheck and am hoping this report may help me get some answers?
Thanks

After upgrading to Yosemite, If i plug in my Zte MF 820 LTE modem into my Macbook Pro USB socket or a Thunderbolt USB Ethernet converter/ into my Notebook, it slow down dramatically the system, unusable, need to reboot and unplug the USB moderm or Thunderbolt interface. So it does work only without any plug in device..!?

Upgrade to Yosemite Slowed down computer substantially
Hi All,
I recently upgraded my MBP (mid-2009) to Yosemite. I noticed that people have been using EtreCheck to determine what is the root cause of these Yosemite upgrade slowdowns. My issue is that I am having difficulty interpreting the output file. Any help and recommendations would be appreciated.
Here is the file:
Problem description:
After upgrading my MacBook Pro 2009 to Yosemite from Mavericks, everything has slowed down substantially, including loading of pages in Safari.

Hello, I have iMAC 7,1, 20 inch,
4gigs of ram,
Intel C2D
ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB
HDD 320gig's
iMAC is perfectly runing OS Mavericks (10.9.5), with no lag, and no sluggish working, Multitasking is AWESOME (i have PC, with 8gigs of RAM, GeForce GTX570, etc etc), but i must say this MAC is running way better a way way, faster and I am Loving it!!! I am using it for making music, and video editing, i am Using Final Cut Pro x, Ableton 9, Logic Pro x, and bunch of other apps and it is working perfectly, and i am so shocked how machine old like this can do that stuff better than any PC i had, and not to mention that I use more time on iMAC than on PC, i use Windows PC just for occasional gaming, but that is like 10% of time, so i use my MAC in 90% of time.
So, enough of my iMAC. I am wondering if I update it to Yosemite, will my iMac slow down, and not continue to work like on Mavericks? Will it become sluggish and unresponsive? Will it affect reliability and stability which have on Mavericks? And will update delete my personal data (tons of Logic, Ableton and Garage band projects, and tons of Final Cut Pro projects), Applications (because I have some apps which is hard to find these days)...
I know bunch of you guys would tell me to backup my data, but i don't have External hard drive (they are pretty expensive in my Country), I have some friend who could borrow me External HDD, but they have their data on it, and they mostly use windows.. I did not use Time Machine yet, but i think probably it would format HDD on Macs partitions, so, i will do it on my own guys (don't judge me about that guys please)..
So if someone could answer me that, i will really appreciate that.
Thank you, and best Regards!!

I recommend you upgrade your RAM to at least 8 GB for good performance with the apps you're using. Also keep a minimum of 25-30 GB of free space on your boot drive for optimal system and application performance.
The maximum RAM a 7.1 iMac can address is 6GB, the OP can keep one of the 2GB DIMMs and then add a matching 4GB DIMM. If the OP decides to do this, please only purchase from Crucial or OWC at www.MacSales.com.
However as described on a 8 year old iMac, I'd stay with Mavericks and then when considering upgrading upgrade to a more up-to-date Mac. -
External monitor slowing down my MacBook pro
I recently hooked up a brand new external Acer G205HV monitor to my 15" MacBook Pro (4gb RAM) using the mini display port to DVI adapter from Apple. I have an GeForce 9400M graphics card with 256mb ram. Whenever I have the monitor plugged in it slows down my computer tremendously. When I do not use the monitor, my laptop is back to being lightening fast.
Expose` and the dashboard lag a ton, and basically the internet craps out. I can barely load websites and streaming video has become virtually impossible. I have tried running with the laptop open and in clam mode. Same result. At first I thought I had a virus, which would be very very rare, but after using the laptop without the monitor I realized that the monitor was slowing me down.
The max resolution that I am running the monitor at is 1600x900 @60Hz. The DVI adapter is supposed to support a much higher resolution than this. Is my graphics card the issue? Any help is appreciated. thanks!I have the same problem with a spring 2008 MacBook (4,1) with 4 GB RAM running 10.5.8. Using a DVI external monitor, the wireless speed drops by at least half and usually more. This is the case whether using a Samsung 2443 BW at home or a Dell at work. I've tried different DVI cables, changing channels from 11 to 1, no difference.
Took it to the local Apple store where they had only a VGA monitor to test with and, strangely, the wireless was unaffected. It was a small ACER monitor, a 15-inch or so, not wide-screen. Have had no other opportunities to try a VGA monitor, as I don't have a mini-DVI to VGA adapter.
But I wonder if there's something there?

Random internet slowing down on MacBook Pro with Retina Display
Hi there!
I have a 15" Macbook Pro With Retina Display, 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel Iris Pro 1024 MB, OS X 10.9.2 (13C64). late 2013
for some reason since the last system upadate, my internet on my Macbook has been slowing down at random times during operation, sometimes I am using facetime and browsing Safari, facetime continues operating normally but everything else relted to the interent would show me that there is no internet connection "Basically i cannot use anything related to the internet unless i turn off and on the wirless adapter. and its not just while using Facetime and safari but Safari alone aswell "one second am using the internet no problem playing video on youtube and checking facebook and all the sudddent it stops loading and tells me that there is no internet connected though the wireless indicator shows otherwise.
I have really fast internet and am the only one using it, i have comcast Blast Plus "57 MB/S download speeds".

Mountain lion update slowed down my macbook pro
hey guys,
I just updated to mountain lion
however, after the installation, my macbook pro has been noticably slow.
slow booting, slow when operating installed programs, chrome/safari got slowed down as well.
Also it freezes for couple of seconds and i was wondering why.
If any of u r experiencing same problems or know how to fix it please kindly let me know!
Thank you!Have tried everything possible, repairing permissions etc to no avail.
You haven't tried everything possible or you would have a solution. If you tried the most extreme possible solution (erasing the hard drive, then reinstalling the system and nothing else) and still had the same problems, you would have discovered that you almost certainly have a hardware problem. For some solutions that you haven't tried yet, I'll refer you to the same two links I referred sylee48 to.
As for that article, that's an extremely unprofessional piece of writing. They publish - as if they were fact - the conclusions of untrained, non-technical users who do not have the necessary expertise to make such conclusions. And they concluded that these were bugs that Apple should be working on.
In fact, this may be one of the smoothest upgrades I've seen in a while. (Boy-oh-boy, you should have seen the screaming here for the Snow Leopard and Lion upgrades! It's positively peaceful in this forum compared to that.) -
Will 6,000 songs slow down my macbook 2.2ghz?
Hi
I've searched for an answer for this with no luck yet.
My macbook is 4 months old, it's a 2.2ghz and has OSX 10.5.2.
I haven't installed my itunes library from my old computer yet: it has about 6,000 songs.
I like how fast this macbook is and I don't want it to slow down just because of songs. Will my macbook still run as fast with the library installed?
Thanks in advance!
DKWill my macbook still run as fast with the library installed?
Yes.
The only time the songs will slow it down is if the hard drive is full (as in very little space left) but it won't because they are songs. It will be because the OS does not have room to work on the HD. -
OS X Lion - will it slow down my Macbook Air?
Does anyone know if the new OS X Lion will slow down the perfromance of my Macbook Air which has the following specifications:
2GB, 1,86 GHZ
or is it better to stick with the OS X 10.6.8?
I read today that Lion is having an impact on machines which have processors less than 2GHZ and are only equipped with 2GB
Thank you.I did an inplace upgrade on my Gen1 13" 80GB IDE MBA model.
Whilst it was always an overheater of playing anything flash or full screen video I find the performance has not changed since my upgrade.
I am a light user.
Internet/cloud documents/messenger & remote desktop/VPN
The boot time was always poor for my MBA, but that said, how often do we reboot them
Ever since day one, I've never been able to run imovie/CS3 as it would throttle my MBA, but Lion installed fine, even when my HDD was 90% full. -
Yosemite slowing down macbook air performance
Ever since upgrading to yosemite, my 2011 macbook air 11' has been very noticeably sluggish compared to how it was with mavericks. At first i thought it might be from some conflicts from the previous OS, so I did a completely fresh install with yosemite, but it's still dragging and sluggish, especially with any kind of graphics intensive process. I know the air isn't supposed to be a marvel at graphics performance, but I never had these performance issues with mavericks.
Is yosemite just too resource heavy for my macbook air? I wonder if I'd just be better off going back to mavericks. However, if there's some kind of settings I need to adjust, I'd be happy to experiment. I've already tried the 'reduce transparency' trick, but it didn't do much (not that I noticed anyways).Gatekeeper is described here: OS X: About Gatekeeper - Apple Support. It is only one defense to protect you from inadvertently installing malware, and an effective defense does not rely upon only one method.
... I can use software that isn't officially "identified" by apple, even though it is trusted.
Apple's philosophy is such that a Mac user with Admin privileges always has control over what he or she installs. As I wrote Gatekeeper will serve to protect you against inadvertently installing malware, including the adware that is affecting your Mac. Adware does not get installed on its own - it requires your explicit permission, which you provided by supplying your Admin name and password. When that dialog appears, it should be expected, not a surprise, and its implications should be clearly understood. By providing your credentials OS X concludes you know what you're doing and the reason you're doing it. Determining the "trusted" aspect of software thereby falls to you.
In your case, by choosing the "anywhere" option you effectively circumvented this basic OS X security feature.
The problem with adware is that it relies upon deception to convince you that it's legitimate software offered for some beneficial purpose, when in fact all it will do is interfere with your normal activity and possibly crash your Mac.
Is there anything I can do to possibly identify which apps may be slowing my system down?
Yes, although you installed quite a number of them. For troubleshooting, read below the line that follows the end of this post.
An EtreCheck report generated on a Mac as it ships from Apple will show no entries under Kernel Extensions, Launch Agents, User Launch Agents, Safari Extensions, 3rd Party Preference Panes, etc. Everything that appears under those headings is there because you installed them. As I wrote it's a user's responsibility to understand the specific benefits they are intended to convey, the effects they will have, and the means of uninstalling them should they result in unacceptable performance - which was your original complaint.
It's also possible that the slowdowns are not caused by software, but given the extent to which your system has been modified, hardware failure is less likely than incompatible or poorly implemented software.
... anything that isn't officially "identified" by apple is adware?
Although OS X incorporates specific prohibitions against installing common malware, they can hardly attempt to classify specific user-installed modifications as adware. The only certain way to do that would be to prevent user-installed system modifications altogether, in the same manner as they do with iOS (iPads and iPhones).
Adware's appearance changes approximately every day. Their pathetic developers are desperate to change its appearance in an effort to continue their deceptive tactics, and a simple change of a file name precludes a reliable automated means of intercepting it. That's the reason it's incumbent upon Mac users to educate themselves about its appearance so that they are not so easily gulled into installing some junk. Gatekeeper merely helps you understand that's what you'd be doing.
Back up your Mac if you have not already done so. To learn how to to that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.
If your Mac is momentarily unresponsive, consider the following.
Launch the Console app - it is in your Utilities folder. You can find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.
If the log list column on the left is not already displayed, show the log list by selecting Show Log List from Console's View menu. Select Show Toolbar if it is not already shown.
Locate system.log in the list and select it. Many date and time-stamped entries will appear, hundreds of them, and you must find the entries relevant to your Mac's problem.
To do that click the Clear Display button in the Toolbar. All previously displayed log entries will be disappear.
Next: Perform whatever actions cause the Mac to exhibit the slow behavior. If the problem is caused by errors logged by the system, the Console window will show them being recorded in system.log.
One or more of them, along with their time stamps, may reveal the reason for the problem you describe.
Copy and paste those log entries in a reply. If hundreds of the same repetitive messages appear, please edit them before posting. There should be no need for more than a few log entries.
Most of the entries will be cryptic but will contain information you might consider personal such as your Mac's name. If you do not want that information to appear, delete or obscure it when posting your reply. Leave enough information so that the entries can be deciphered. -
I have a Macbook Pro (Late 2011) that is currently running OS Lion 10.7.5. I was just wondering if updating to OS Mountain Lion would slow it down in terms of performance, or if it will have any other bugs on my MacBook?
PS. When updating to a different OS, do I have to back up my files to like a hard drive or something? When updating to a different OS, do I have to back up my files to like a hard drive or something?
A back up is a precaution that you should always have, not just when installing an update to the OS. Its purpose is no different from the seat belt you wear when you drive. Use it all the time, and hope it will never be really necessary. -
Will putting 6gb of music do anything to slow down my macbook pro?
i just got a macbook pro 13 inch i5 and i want to put all my music on it so i wont lose it when i sync my ipod and i have 6gb of music so will that slow my computer down at all or do anything to it? please help
No it won't slow your computer, unless you are getting very low on hard drive space. In you case with a new computer it shouldn't be an issue.
