OS X10.4.11 update, Safari won't connect to secure (HTTPS) URLs

Didn't find any discussion of this particular symptom of the update, so thought I'd ask.
Installed 10.4.11 update over the weekend, which contained Safari v3.0.4. After the (uneventful) install and reboot, I'm unable to connect to any secure (HTTPS) URL. Browser seems to work on non-secure connections (HTTP). My FIREFOX browser on the same machine still works.
Haven't experienced any crashing or other OS issues, only the "Can't make a secure connection" with Safari (so far).
Suggestions would be appreciated.

Did you recently install the latest Security upgrade, but did not "repair permissions" on the restart? If so, that's your answer. I have found it essential to "Repair permissions" before and after any Apple system update, or Security update. Otherwise oddities may appear in the operating system.
Also, sometimes reapplying the Combo Update specific to your current version of OS X remedies these types of problems. Here too, it's important to "repair permissions" etc.

  • Safari won't connect to internet

Hi, Safari on Ipad will not connect to my wi-fi.  My wi-fi works fine with Galaxy phone and Gateway computer.   I noticed that next to the wi-fi name there is a little swirly thing that keeps spinning like it is trying to update. I have rebooted Ipad several times and also my wi-fi.  Help!

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Safari won't connect to the internet?

    Hi all
Safari won't connect to the internet. My Itunes store works fine, and i can update my software without any problems.
    Anyone have a sollution?
    Thanks!

I open Safari => Top sites open ==> i click on a site ==> Safari says " Safari can't open the page "http://www.youtube.com/" because Safari can't connect to the server "www.youtube.com".
This message is not a popup, its a text in the Safari page like "no internet" or something.

  • IPad 3 IOS6.0.1 update, WiFi won't connect

I have an iPad 3 and my WiFi was working well with IOS6, until the 6.0.1 update.
Now under the settings it says it is connected to my WiFi (puts the network name in) but it actually isn't. When you look it is still attempting to connect. If you try to open up Safari or an App it says that you are not connected to the Internet. I forgot the network added it again still cannot connect. 6.0.1 bricked my WiFi.
Is there a way to restore back to IOS6? Or does anyone know a fix? I reset the network settings, probably going to do a hard reset soon.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

  • How do I use a different browser then safari?  I have several sites safari won't connect to.

How do I use a different browser then safari?  I have several sites safari won't connect to.

I can connect to Bank of America's site just fine. Can you connect to the site or is it that you can't perform certain functions on the website? Do you know that there is a Bank of America App available?
Bank of America for iPad for iPad on the iTunes App Store

  • Safari won't connect to certain webpages

    Welp,
on my G5, in the past few weeks, Safari won't connect with only certain internet pages, like ebay, qvc, and my school webpage. Called Apple help and the man said there was a third party thingie in the way. Dumped preferences, then re-installed the harddrive (with archives) and still the same problem. Type the address, wait more than a minute, then the Safari cannot connect page comes up. I've sent about nine of these to report bugs but have heard nothing back. I'm computer illiterate and will appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks
    G5 Mac OS X (10.4.6)

First off, this is the eMac group. Your system info says "G5". So are you in the correct group (all eMacs are G4 machines).
Have you tried those same pages with other browsers? FireFox and Camino are two that are popular and free downloads. So first thing to do is try those out as well and see how the pages come up. If they come up in Firefox or Camino, then I would agree that your problem is with Safari.
If, however, they don't come up there, then your problem is elsewhere. Likely places to check are Firewall setting in software or in any router you might be using. I have found certain "secure" or other log in type sites sometimes have troubles with certain Firewall settings on my DSL router. You may have the same issue and are looking in the wrong place for your solution.

  • Safari won't connect without signing on to AOL

I’m having a problem with Safari not working. I have had my imac G5 for a couple of weeks now and It’s been working great until yesterday. I use safari and AOL with a router. Safari is my default browser. Everything was working fine except now Safari won’t connect unless I’m logged into AOL. If I’m in AOL Safari works fine only slower than normal. If I log out of AOL, Safari quits working. Anyone have any suggestions?
Not sure what happened. Everything else seems to be working fine.
    Thanks,
    randy

Just as suddenly as Safari stopped working, it started again. The only thing I did differently was sign in to the main administrator and started Safari from there. Maybe I needed to do that after I repaired permissions and reset the modem. anyhow, it's working ... for now.
    Thanks

  • Safari won't connect to internet; Firefox will ???

Safari won't connect to internet; Firefox will???
Wierdest thing. For some reason Safari won't browse or connect to the internet anymore. When I open Safari the default address is in URL bar, but with highlighted (words only) in blue and it just sits there all day. I can't connect to any web site on the net.
However, if I open Firefox all is fine and my Mail is all fine also.
I've repaired permissions a few times and even trashed the preferences for Safari, restarted computer etc, but it still refuses to actually display anything. I get a blank white page, then after about 2 minutes it simply says "Safari can't open the page. Because the server stopped responding".
As I said, no problem with Firefox.
    Any ideas.

I thank you for getting me into the right ball-park otherwise I would not have spotted it.
You're welcome. Glad I could help.
Please consider marking this post "helpful" next to my name ((you'll need to log-on to the forum).

  • After update, Safari won't open

After installing the recent updates from Apple, Safari won't open.
Do I need to re-install from disc?
If so, how can I just install Safari? (The instruction manual suggests that i would have to re-install OS X and all applications).
    Thanks

    Hi Kat (and Cat ),
    Give these steps a try:
    1. Move the current Safari application from the Applications folder to your Desktop
    2. Insert your Leopard installation DVD into the machine
    3. Reinstall Safari using the custom install method [described here|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1442] (the article refers to 10.4 but I believe it still works in 10.5)
    4. Download the [10.5.4 combo update|http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1054comboupdate.html] to your computer
    5. Run Disk Utility and [repair disk permissions|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/du h17.html] on your startup disk
    6. Rerun the 10.5.4 update on your machine to reapply the update
As with all system installations, please make sure you have backed up any essential documents just in case something bad happens.
If the new Safari in the Applications folder now works, feel free to delete the copy you made on your Desktop earlier on.

  • Why would Safari try to insert an s, as in https, into the facebook log in.  Safari won't open the secure page. Advice?

Why would Safari try to insert an s, as in https, into the facebook log-in page.  "Safari can't connect to this secure page."  I've checked preferences and cannot find a reason for this change to the regular facebook address. Safari 5.0.5 on MacbookAir.  I can't even download the updated software.

If you leave your session idle for a while, the site might log you out due to inactivity, but... I wouldn't trust that, either.
Usually your bank will have a link, menu, or some other way to log out. Certainly that is the best thing if you can do it. Sometimes if a site is not fully compatible with Firefox its style rules will result in a jumbled layout. You can disable all the style rules and view the site in a plainer layout to see whether you can spot the missing link. To do that:
tap the Alt key > View menu > Page Style > No Style
(The tab will remain unstyled going forward. You can use the same menu to reapply the page's style sheets later.)
Also, if you want to break the connection between Firefox and your banking session, you can clear your cookies for the bank site. This won't necessarily have any effect on your banking session ''on the server'' but should make it impossible for someone to use your Firefox to do anything in that session. To clear cookies for the current site, you can use the Page Info dialog. Here are 3 ways to open it:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * click the padlock on the address bar > More Information > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
Then reload the page and the site should behave as though you are not logged in.

  • Safari won't load/can't find url or url invalid

I'm having issues with Safari either unable to load a page, saying url is invalid or ? in boxes where pics are supposed to be. It's the worst for pages on Apple.com and Facebook.  Below are the errors/warnings system log and I apologize but I'm not sure what any of this means other than it's an error.  Also, I've put in a case with Apple Support unfortunately, my cell coverage at home ***** & every time Apple Support tries to reach me my phone drops the call.  So any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.   I know it's a lot to read, sorry.

Try Safari in another user account. Same problem there, log back into your admin account, launch Disk Utility. Verify the startup disk. If it needs repairing, help here for Using Disk Utility to Verify and Repair Disks
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • Safari Won't Connect To Specific Network. Firefox Will!

I have a specific issue with Safari (and Mail.app) on a specific network I try to connect to.
The network is one offered on a train service, and pre-Lion I've been able to connect to it just fine.
All of a sudden my MBP and MBA are able to connect to the network - but if I try and start Safari it just bounces away in the dock.
On the rare occasion that Safari starts it won't connect to any webpages. Mail.app also refuses to work in the same way.
If I use Firefox - I can use the internet as normal (although I still have issues with Mail.app).
The bigger issue occurs when I am off the train and trying to use my laptop on other networks - Safari and Mail continue to refuse to work, even though the laptop tells me I'm connected. I have to restart the entire machine.
I've deleted networks from the SysPrefs, reordered them, tried a Google DNS etc etc. I've Googled the issue like crazy, and even contacted the train operator! - and so far come up with nothing.
Any help would be much apprecieted.

Do you have anti virus software installed or any apps like Little Snitch?
Try deleting the cache associated with Safari.
    Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
Move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac, try Safari.
~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.
For LIon:   To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library
