  • Undebuggable crash launching from Cortana (or - how can I attach the debugger to my about-to-crash phone app?)

    Hello,
    I integrated voice activation for my WP8.1 universal app, however it doesn't appear to be possible to debug the case when starting the app afresh via Cortana with speech terms.
    There are three main speech startup cases I've played with:
    1) App is suspended - can be seen in multitasking list by holding down back button, go to Cortana "myapp do something" - reactivates the app, calls App.OnActivated.  Works fine.
    2) App has been terminated - not in the multitasking list.  Go to Cortana "start myapp" - starts the app like it was launched from the app list, calls App.OnLaunched but not
    OnActivated.  Works fine.
    3) App has been terminated - not in the multitasking list.  Go to Cortana "myapp do something" - starts the app, comes through to App.OnActivate but the app hangs for a few seconds on
    the splash screen and crashes (device and emulator).
    I want to catch the 3) case in the debugger, but cannot find a way to attach the debugger to my running package in the time window between activation and crashing.  I think something is happening
    deep in xaml land, but it's become impossible to instrument.  I'm actually at the point now where it doesn't do anything in the OnActivate handler at all... no page navigation happens in the app but it still crashes.
    I have a debug dump showing what appears to be a divide-by-zero exception but I can't seem to debug it in VS2013 as it complains about skipping loading symbols for NGen'd exe and "The exception
    thread has exited or the dump contains invalid thread information".
    I cannot seem to find any information on how to effectively debug this scenario - it seems an important one for Cortana integration.
    Basic repro:
    In VS2013, create a new universal Hub app and editing the Windows Phone project:
    Add Microphone capability in app manifest
    Change the Display Name in the app manifest to something sayable.
    Add in the most trivial speech activation capability using the VoiceCommandManager in App.OnLaunched with a very basic speech file.
    Run once from the debugger to ensure everything is set up ok and voice command file is installed.
    Kill from the debugger to make sure the app is terminated.
    Hold down phone/emulator search button.
    Say the phrase to start your app (in my case "CortanaCrashTest test something").
    Cortana recognises the phrase and says it's going to start your app... app starts...
    Sits on app splash screen, hang and crash.
    Here are my code modifications:
    Right at the top of App.OnLaunched:
    #if WINDOWS_PHONE_APP
    var storageFile = await Windows.Storage.StorageFile.GetFileFromApplicationUriAsync(new Uri("ms-appx:///Speech.xml"));
    await Windows.Media.SpeechRecognition.VoiceCommandManager.InstallCommandSetsFromStorageFileAsync(storageFile);
    #endif
    Speech.xml (added to project as content):
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
    <VoiceCommands xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/voicecommands/1.1">
    <CommandSet xml:lang="en-us" Name="test">
    <Example>test stuff</Example>
    <Command Name="test">
    <Example>test stuff</Example>
    <ListenFor>test {*}</ListenFor>
    <Feedback>test...</Feedback>
    <Navigate/>
    </Command>
    </CommandSet>
    </VoiceCommands>
    Thanks,
    Will.

    Hello,
    I had the same problem and solved it.
    This issue occurred because OnLaunched method is not called when the App is activated.
    You have to copy some code from OnLaunched method in order to correct your problem.
    OnActivated method must start with this code to correct your issue :
    protected override void OnActivated(IActivatedEventArgs args)
    Frame rootFrame = Window.Current.Content as Frame;
    if (rootFrame == null)
    rootFrame = new Frame();
    rootFrame.CacheSize = 1;
    Window.Current.Content = rootFrame;
    rootFrame.Navigate(typeof(YourMainPage));
    Window.Current.Activate();
    // Your code here

  • Phone app is crashing after upgrading to iOS 6 on 4S

    After upgrading my iPhone 4S to iOS 6.0.1 I'm having real problems to use the phone app.
    It takes about 2 minutes to load the app, when it can load, sometimes it crashes then I have to re-open it.
    I've already tried to unlink my FB account and installing iOS 6.0.1 again.
    Any ideas?

    Just to add:
    HAd the Same issue as Bruno, IOS 6.1.2.
    When you said replacing the call log helped, that gave me the major clue to solving it a little easier.
    I didn't care if I lost my call log history - and so will you if you do it, but it's much simpler:
    I found the location of the call history file, and just deleted it straight from my Iphone.
    Restarted the device, and it worked like new. Thx Bruno for the tip.
    Been putting it off for 6 months now....
    This is where you'll find the file:
    /private/var/wireless/Library/CallHistory/call_history.db
    EDIT: actually, Don't do it. can't save any call history now.... brrr!!! at least I can use it. But my friend had the same issue, deleted his, and his history is working so I don't know...I'll edit with more details when I have some

  • After upgrading to iOS 5 the actual phone app keeps crashing

    Updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 5 yesterday. Everything seems to work fine, it seems, except the actual phone app.
    When I click it to make a call it immediately crashes and goes back to the home screen.
    I was able to make a call by calling out of the address book but the screen was blank. At the top I got the green bar saying "Touch to return to call" and when I clicked on it I'd see the regular phone stuff you'd expect to see for a split second before the screen went back to black with the green bar at the top.
    I was unable to end the call without turning the phone off.
    I can receive calls and everything works fine until I answer the call. I'm able to talk with no problems but I get the same problem described above when actually looking at the phone.
    I have tried turning the phone off and also hard resets but nothing works.
    Anybody know what's wrong or how to fix?
    Thanks,
    d.

    Clearing all the apps out of the multitask tray followed by a hard reset appears to have solved the problem.

  • Since upgrading my phone to 6.0.1, I'm using way too much data. I believe it's the podcast app that's not loading shows while I'm connected to wifi. I have the 3g turned off for podcasts??? also after a phone call or an alert it starts playing a podcast?

    I've also had the same issues, after upgrading to IOS 6.0, the apps in my iPhone 4 were crashing and the battery life run out very fast.
    The only solution worked for me was to remove all mail accounts (Exchange/Gmail) from my iPhone (in settings) and then add them back.
    The crashing were stopped! also the battery was back to normal.
    I found the solution by first looking at the crash logs (in IOS 6). you can find them at Settings -> General -> About (at the bottom of the About menu you will find the option that opens the logs).
    There i saw many logs about Low Memory crash. 99% of the logs were pointed that the largest process (use the most memory) during the crashes is "dataaccessd".
    I search in the web and found that this process is a deamon process that reponsible the Mail accounts (like Exchange/Gmail) and contancts list.
    I've installed the app "System Status - activity monitor" which shows important system info like CPU usage, Memory usage and running processes.
    Before apply my solution (deleting the mail accounts) i saw that the CPU usage was very high which consume the battery very fast. Also i saw that the memory (RAM) was run out.. which probably what cause the crashing..
    After deleting the mail accounts (at Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars) i check again with the System Status app, and saw that the memory and CPU were back to normal.
    Adding the mail accounts back, still everything work ok
    Hope this solution will help you too,
    Enjoy!

    Since upgrading my phone to the iOS7, I can no longer download music or apps on neither my iphone or through itunes on my computer.  On my phone, it won't let me accept the terms & conditions.  On my computer, an error message keeps flashing up: 'Error (-50)'.  Please help?...

    Sounds like the device is in recovery mode. You will need to restore the phone. See this support document for instructions. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

  • My AppStore won't let me upgrade or download apps. I already reset my phone in all the ways possible and it didn't fix the problem. Help

    I tried resetting my phone and also deleted all the content but I still can't upgrade or install apps. Does anyone know how I can fix it?

    Did you check in Settings>iTunes & App Store and log out of your Apple ID and then log back in again? If that does not help, and you say that you have deleted all content (which I'm not sure exactly what you mean there), then I suggest you contact iTunes support to see if there is a problem with your account. http://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html

  • My phone app freezes and message app crashes. I tried restarting multiple times and the problem persists. Everytime i go to the phone app and press on a contact to call it just freezes up and does nothing. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

    My phone app freezes and when i press on contact either it freezes or does nothing. Anyone know how to fix this problem? Also messaging app crashes. ANOTHER NEW PROBLEM: I can't receive calls either.

    Try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose any data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches.
    If this does not help, setting it up as new device would be the next step:
    How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups

  • Dding favorite contacts in phone app causes it to crash in iOS 4.1

    Hey guys I had this problem in ios4.1 and I am running on an iphone 4.
    Go to your phone app,Then go to your favorites tab,Then tap the add button,Then go to the search feature in your contacts tab and search for any contact,after that click the contact and try to add them to your favorites list. Does your phone app crash as soon as you try to add a contact to the favorites?
    Now you must search for the contact and not scroll through.
    It happends to contacts that just have one piece of info. Like a solo phone number or a solo email address. If selects contacts with multiple pieces of info just fine.

    Yup it only happens when you search for a contact through the favorites tab for a contact with a single entry.
    Contacted apple and they said I'd have to go to the store to check it out or have a $599 hold on my account while they send a new one.
    Its not too troublesome since there is a workaround. So here's hoping the next update might fix it. I don't know if a hardware problem cause I think 4.0.2 worked fine.
    If more people could take a minute to try it we can confirm if its a hardware or software issue.
    Thanks!
    Steps just incase people want to try it
    1) Open the Phone app
    2) Go to the favorites tab
    3) Add a contact from the favorites tab
    4) Search for a contact with a *single number entry* by using the search function
    5) Let us know if it crashes back to the home screen!

    My Mavericks upgrade crashed my hard drive and I had to reinstall Mountain Lion.  Now I cannot get any of the apps that I purchased to download.  The icons on the launchpad just say "waiting" no matter what I try.  My app store ID is fine.  What do I do?

    Are you now using a different username from the one you used prior to migrating? If so that is the reason for the problem. You might, then, give this a try:
    To fix Home folder permissions
    Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder.  At the command line prompt enter or paste the following command line:
    sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
    Press RETURN.  You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed.

  • Since the last major upgrade my phone keeps crashing. What is going on?

    Since the last major Android / EE upgrade, my phone is a mess! Various functions keep crashing, including the touchscreen functionality, the EE support function and sometimes it just crashes completely and has to be restarted. It's a pain.  What is happening about this? JC

    From time to time Android releases a new version of their firmware. These can be either by a minor update or a major update.
    It is always advised after a major update you perform a factory restore of the phone.
    This will get rid of any left over residue files that the update has created. This left over files can hit your phones performance. Drain your battery and can cause issues.
    Click here for a guide how to factory restore your phone.
    You will find it should help with most of your issues.
    If you are still having issues you may find it is an issue with the firmware itself.

  • Native Phone app crashes

    HI,
    My son's iPhone 4S has developed on odd problem in that every time he starts the native "Phone" app, it displays an almost blank screen, then disappears after a few seconds. The app still appears to be running when you tap the Home button twice, but you can't switch to the Phone app itself.
    I've tried:
    deleting the last few apps he installed in case they'd locked or changed something
    a full reboot/power down
    logging in and out of iTunes (and the iCloud for what that was worth)
    downloading a free app (to try the reauthorize idea several websites mention)
    restoring the iPhone backup from iTunes
    A factory reset and restore
    Nothing worked.
    I had a trawl through the "Diagnostics and Usage Data" within the Privacy settings, and the Phone apps appears to crash with the same error, but I've no idea what the crash report is telling me, or how to get some meaningful information from it as I'm not a developer...
    Do any of you good folk have any ideas as to what I could try next?
    Thanks,
    John

    That worked a treat! Thanks for your help!
    The only casualties were my son's SMS messages (I'm guessing there must've been some from his girlfriend he wanted to keep), but he's happier that his phone is now working properly. (And so am I .)
    Again, many, many thanks for taking the time to reply, and helping get the phone working again. Much appreciated.
    Regards,
    John

    No. Apps can be downloaded again, or synced to your phone after the upgrade. If by "upgrade" you mean "buy a new phone" then see this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109
