Os9.2.2 afp problem

Having trouble connecting to a Lacie Ethernet Disk from a Mac running OS 9.2.2.
No other networking issues with this station. Is there a patch or an upgrade to the afp software on OS9.

I am not an Apple employee, just a User like you who reads these forums. I answer many of the questions having to do with OS 9-era Networking and Printing.
I have never heard of such a patch from Apple.
If they are so convinced there is a patch, needed to make their equipment work properly, I am sure that they can provide you with a link to it. Asking for a Mac Specialist or a Supervisor can sometimes remind the first-line responders that they do not get Hazardous Duty Pay to deal with cases that are unusual or difficult. You may need to explain to them that if they cannot be more helpful, their equipment will go back in the box and on its way back to them.

  • AFP Problem take 2

Ok, in a small network we have a xserver hosting all our network services including some AFP shares.
The problem is that, when i log into my superuser and/or any normal network users to administrate the server - it also mounts my primary network share. Should i happen to click that share, the server will hang infdefinitly.
    After it hangs:
-All the network users crash, naturally.
    -Looks like finder hangs too
    -Server responds to PING
-It`s possible to SSH my way into the server when it hangs.
But, i can`t use ARD or physical access because of the spinning beachball of doom caused by the AFP problem.
    How do i solve this?

I am having a similar problem. There seems to be a correlation with the amount of users connected and/or network traffic, and when a user/users is/are attempting a search. My guess is one or more users tries to search, it slows the connection, a few users try to access the server... and then it locks up. I haven't found a solution to the problem yet, but it may be due to my network switches. They are old and cranky and may not be able to handle all the traffic.

  • Deleting from AFP problems

    Hi -
We import our photos leaving them in the current location, which happens to be on AFP volumes. Everything works well except deleting (not removing) images. It errors out & says the file can't be moved to the trash. I tried it accross different servers, including a Windows server running AFP, and always get the same result.
    This is on a Mac.
This does not happen on SMB or NFS volumes.
    Any help/Suggestions appreciated.

    Okay..
The tables are set up the same.. I had some original relationships what I thought may have been the problem. I removed the relationships to no avail.. Unfortunately, I am using MS-Access and don't know much about it, but I don't know what else to check for. I removed the relationships and the table should not have any problems that my java code couldn't handle.. Any ideas on what i should do next?

  • Using afp problem

Hi, I have a problem connecting to my volume from the server. This just happened today after upgrading from Panther to Tiger. I have a applescript with this lines.
    mount volume "afp://username:[email protected]/volume1"
    mount volume "afp://username:[email protected]/volume2"
    mount volume "afp://username:[email protected]/volume3"
    mount volume "afp://username:[email protected]/volume4"
And this script I have it under the system preferences>accounts>Login items. When I start my computer it goes just to first line and gives me an error. "Disk some object wasn't found." So I close this error box then I manually double click on the script and NOW all my volumes get loaded. Does anybody out there now how I can fix this issue?
    Thanks in advanced.
      Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hello jcc31
I don't know how to fix your applescript however you don't need to use a script to mount network volumes at login.
In Tiger you just mount your volumes then add them to your login items, drag and drop works. Then if you add your password to the keychain the first time these volumes are mounted the next time you login to your mac all the volumes are automatically mounted.

    Thanks ... Ken
Lucky you Ken.  Unfurtunately, my NAS is a DS207+.  Any Synology NAS ending in 07 is getting dropped.  There was a recent DSM update that my NAS is not picking up for that reason.  All those of us with -07 units can hope for is a hotfix.  Otherwise, this may come down to either a) upgrading netatalk manually on the NAS (could be somewhat painful) por b) resorting to CIFS or SMB.  I dont think CIFS is too bad but it does seem to get penalized big time with small reads/writes based on the benchmarks I have seen.  AFP is much more efficient, longer time-outs, etc. so I would prefer to stick with it. Specially when that it is native to OSX.
For now, I am switching my scripts over to CIFS until Synology makes a decision... :-(

  • G4 Quicksilver OS9/OSx usb power problem

I have a Quicksilver I just bought, loaded with OS 10.4 and decided to load OS 9.2 on to another hard disk, but am constantly getting this message once OS 9.2 is running "A USB device is using to much power. That USB port will be deactivated". I click OK but it keeps coming back. I am using an Apple Pro Keyboard and roller mouse hooked up to seperate ports. There is a USB pci card added to the computer, but it works fine in OSx. Got any clues?

  • 10.4.6 update authentication problem

As I have read there are several who have had AFP problems after the 10.4.6 update. I was unable to access or start AFP after the update nor am I able to login over remote desktop. I tried removing my sharepoints as per the helpful suggestions but when removing my sharepoint which formerly hosted my user folders it asks me to authenticated to LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 as a domain administrator. I tried this to no avail using the proper name and password (I know becase WGM let me in just fine). I decided to demote to standalone using the dropdown in Server Admin then would remove the share but it is still asking me to authenticate. Luckily this is a test server and only had 3 accounts on it but can someone point me in the right direction?
To recap: AFP will not start or restart, Remote Desktop access gives me an authentication error with working pw, and I cannot remove a sharepoint from a non-existent directory

Turns out it was bad ram causing some of the trouble and trying to fix it only caused more of a mess.

Out of the blue, my Palm stopped hotsyncing with my G3 Mac  (see http://forums.palm.com/t5/Macintosh-HotSync/PALM-V-MAC-OS9-2-2-HOTSYNC-PROBLEM/td-p/273892;jsessioni...) so I am trying to move everything over to my Windows XP Home machine. I downloaded the Palm Desktop V 4.1.4 and purchased a new Keyspan USA-19HS serial to USB adapter for the cradle. I have the Hotsync Manager set to Local USB and the driver said that I was connected to com 4.
I am at a total loss on what to do to get the hotsync to work and I am totally lost without my PDA.

    Hi,
easiest way to verify that your XP CD has SP2 incorporated is to look at the root directory of the CD for a file named 'win51ip.sp2'.
If there, then it is SP2. If not, well...
And there is a way to make yourself a XP CD with SP2 out of your pre-SP2 XP CD by following these instructions http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxpsp2slipstream.asp
But you have to do it on a Windows PC.
Second possibility, the XP CD you have is an upgrade version, which only installs after a check for an older Windows version.
Unfortunately you can't switch CDs during BootCamp Windows installation due to the impossibility to eject the current CD.
Apple strictly says that such upgrade XP CDs don't work with BootCamp.

  • Lion Grafik Problem Mac mini 2010

    Hallo,

  • 10.4.8 AFP a reliable solution?

    Hi,
I followed the discussions of the various AFP problems of Tiger Server while keeping my decision to use it for file service on hold.
Is someone using 10.4.8 and can confirm that the problems were solved by that update (as the release notes promise)?
I need a stable AFP solution and have soon to decide which version to use, Tiger or Panther.
    Thanks in advance.

We upgraded last week from 10.4.6 to 10.4.8 and have noticed a MARKED improvement. Under 10.4.6 we had users getting the beach ball all day, every day. In fact, it's like having a new file server. It is now as fast as our 10.3.9 server.
Since we went right from .6 to .8 it could have been the .7 update that did it, but not sure.

  • Problems saving files

    Hi,
We run a set of PowerMac G5s and iMac G5s off a Xserve all of which are on 10.4.6.
We're experiencing alot of AFP problems as mentioned elxewhere in the forum and I've tried most of the recommended fixes with no luck.
But in the last couple of days we've noticed a certain problem which really affects people who are working on the PowerMacs and saving Quark files down to the server. What happens is it seems they save down their file normally but when someone tries to open it latter it seems to have reverted to a previous version. When I checked the AFP logs I notice they are getting -5006 errors when they try to save. I've also noticed that when I look at the connections pane in Server Admin unlike the iMacs where an IP address is given PowerMac users just have broadcasthost sat in the address field.
I don't know if that is whats causing the problem but it seems like my only clue at the moment. I've set manual ip addresses on the machines to see if that might display the IP address but with no luck. Anyone else experienced this problem and come up with a cure?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Which permissions model are you using? I've had pretty good success with QuarkXPress 6.5 and the Effective Permissions model, which incorporates ACLs. Of course, there are still periodic problems, but that should be fixed soon.
Two things to check for now, though:
    1. Have you seen my ACL Tips posting? I have several suggestions for effectively setting permissions: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1535247
    2. Are you using QuarkXPress 6.5 or 7.0? Quark only supports these two versions with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. Earlier versions of Quark 6.0 or 6.1 require the 6.5 update to be functional for Mac OS X 10.4. Any earlier versions, including Quark 4.x or 5.x which would run in the Classic Environment are simply not supported.

  • Problem Launching Applications

    Greetings everyone.
I’m trying this again, as previous suggestions haven’t worked ...
I’ve got a bit of a problem with my Titanium PowerBook, and,
as always, when I can’t seem to fix it myself, I turn to the
great people of the world for assistance.
    The machine:
    Titanium PB G4, 400MHz, 10 GB HD w/5GB available, 256MB RAM w/VMemory on, running OS9.1.1
    The problem:
When opening some programs, such as PhotoShop or Adaptec Toast (not at the same time), the application will start to open and then immediately quit. No error message or other indication of a problem. Occasionally, a program will open, but immediately upon trying to use it (i.e., opening a photo, creating a
new document, etc.) the program crashes. As this is happening with more than one of my programs, I feel it is a OS problem and not the specific program.
    Examples of memory specifics:
    Photoshop-Suggested Size:16384k; Min. Size: 16384k; Pref Size: 23616k.
    Toast-Suggested Size: 8000k; Min. Size: 8000k; Pref Size: 10220k.
What I have done to try to solve this problem:
I trashed the preferences for both these apps and the Finder and System prefs, rebuilt the desktop, and also increased/decreased the memory for each app. No change.
I ran Disk Doctor and TechTool with no problems found.
I completely deleted all PhotoShop, Toast, or other effected/relevant files and programs from the computer, and re-installed everything via disk. No change.
I re-built the Desktop and zapped the PRAM. No change.
Note: All other apps seem to work fine and as expected. Just these
few apps are giving me the problems. I feel that it is a computer-wide problem that is affecting only a few applications, not an application problem.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks!!
    Bill

If it gets to the point where the only thing left for you to try is a clean install of Mac OS 9 (and the associated headache of reinstalling all the third-party system extensions), try this procedure that I call "the big Preferences folder purge." Only try this if your next option is a clean install.
The following procedure is something I posted in another forum a few years ago. I found the text for that posting in an email, so I'll copy/paste it here, for your consideration.
The procedure is "purging" the preference files in the Preferences folder (the one inside the System Folder). There have been utilities that attempt to selectively "weed out" preference files that are not being used, but I think that's only part of the problem. I suspect that some key preference files can become corrupted or set improperly (either intentionally or by accident). This might lead to some of the instability experienced by users in the classic Mac OS and/or applications.
My old desktop Mac was running fine, but I experienced occasional freezes or "Finder quit unexpectedly" errors (which are almost always unrecoverable). The problem seemed to be getting worse.
Looking through my System Folder, I found I had over one thousand files in my Preferences folder. Many of the files were for programs I tried just once or from old programs I stopped using long ago. Even if this was not a problem, I wanted to get rid of all those unnecessary files. I came up with and used the procedure outlined below to do the "big purge" in a way that was easily reversible, if necessary.
    (1) In the System Folder, find the Preferences folder and COPY it elsewhere, that is, MAKE A DUPLICATE of the entire Preferences folder. If it is on the same volume, be sure you are NOT moving the Preferences folder.
    (2) Record key Control Panel settings, such as for remote access and network configuration, if this info is not already recorded or memorized.
    (3) Back in the System Folder, rename the Preferences folder "Preferences Old" or any appropriate name. Later, if you need to "undo the purge," you can simply rename this folder back to "Preferences."
    (4) Now create a new (empty) folder in the System Folder and name it "Preferences" (make sure that's plural).
    (5) Optional step - If you have any system/application configuration settings that you absolutely do not want to have to replicate -OR- if you do not want to dig up the registration numbers for applications require them, find the relevant preference files in the DUPLICATE folder and copy them back into the NEW Preferences folder. Use your DUPLICATE folder to ensure keeping the "Preferences Old" folder intact, so that you can "undo the damage" if necessary.
    (6) Restart the Mac.
    (7) Fresh preference files related to the Mac OS and Finder should be created automatically. Adjust Control Panel settings as needed.
    (8) Run your frequently used applications. Allow them to create fresh preference files. If some applications need licensing information and you don't want to go find those old registration cards (or emails), find the relevant preference files in the DUPLICATE folder and copy them back into the NEW Preferences folder. Use your DUPLICATE folder to ensure keeping the "Preferences Old" folder intact, so that you can "undo the damage" if necessary.
[As much as possible, allow the OS and applications to create fresh preference files.]
    (9) Run your system to ensure it works properly. If there are problems and you need to revert to the old preference files, just delete the NEW Preferences folder and rename the unchanged "Preferences Old" folder back to "Preferences." Restart.
    (10) If everything is fine (or better), you can eventually delete the "Preferences Old" folder and the DUPLICATE Preferences folder. Or just keep them around until the next time you decide to do a preference file purge.
After purging my Preferences folder, my system has been absolutely stable running Mac OS 9.1. No freezes, no "Finder quit unexpectedly" errors, and fewer application crashes. Additionally, instances when my system appeared to "hang" for a few seconds have disappeared, which may have been caused by the OS rifling through the 1000+ files in my old Preferences folder, looking for a specific file.

  • AFP client "connection failed 32" issue solved

I'm making this post because of the difficulty I had in troubleshooting this AFP error and hope someone will benefit from my finding.
I have a client whose server was responding with "connection failed 32" whenever anyone tried to connect to shares on the attached XRaid. The AFP log indicated entries like this:
    Login admin
    No matching key: admin
After much searching for hints on the forums I couldn't find any solutions. Some postings I read mentioned that the AFP problem was related to SCSI boards on their server. Not having one on our server I went after the nearest such item, namely Firewire. I finally solved the problem by unmounting the bank of 4 Firewire backup drives.
Although I have no idea why the AFP problem is related to the backup drives, it turned out that once I ran Disk Utility to repair the FW drives and remounted them, AFP worked once again. DU found "Directory name locked" on two of the drives and repaired them.

    Hi apta
    No matching key: admin
This seems to indicate a Kerberos key transfer of some sort that has not been recognised or was out of sync. Probably nothing to do with the actual problem which you have fixed. But that is what the log seems to be indicating to me.
    Just a thought thats all
