Os9 not recognize 2nd Hard drive

Hi there,
I work under OS9 and put a second Hard dive in it
On startup I dont see it in the main screen,
Can anyone tell me whats wrong or can tell me how OS9 will recognize the hard drive,
I formatted it as OS9 extended
regards
John

Hi, Musicman40 -
Try connecting the Master drive to the end connector of the ATA cable, and the Slave drive to the middle connector of that cable. Although this should not be necessary, it sometimes works better.
Isn'there a way to copy the systemfile of os9 to the other Hd on startup??
There is no system file as such (there is a file named System, but by itself it is not usable for anything); perhaps you mean the System Folder? OS 9's System Folder can be copied to another volume via drag-and-drop and still retain its functionality.
I don't know of a way to cause that copying to occur automatically at startup. In all probability doing that to a drive which is not visible to OS 9 won't change anything - it will still be not visible.
There is a restriction applicable to your model for drives 8GB or larger, as described in this Apple KBase article -
Article #25249 - Gray or White Screen After Hard Drive Upgrade
That restriction applies to using such a drive as a boot volume; in order to do so, it must be partitioned such that the first partition is slightly less than 8GB, and all OS's for that drive then placed in that partition.
Although that restriction should apply only when using the drive as a boot drive, it would not hurt to test your situation by partitioning it to see if that makes a difference. Be sure to install OS 9 drivers.

    Hi,
Hold down the Windows Key and press R.  Into the Run Box type compmgmt.msc and hit enter.  Click Disk Management in the left pane and let the drives load up.
Does the 2nd HDD show here?

  • System Profiler will not recognize installed hard drive if drive is in use by VMWare

System Information will not recognize installed Hard Drive (Boot Camp) when in use by VMWare.
I work in IT for a School District and I am creating a Script that system information about the computer. I am testing this on a Mac Pro with two internal hard drives. One drive is Mac OS 10.8 and the other drive is a Boot Camp Drive that is used by VMWare Fusion.
When I run System Information via the GUI or system_profiler via Terminal, both drives show up just fine. However, if I launch VMWare Fusion and run Windows from my Boot Camp drive, then run System Information via the GUI or system_profiler via Terminal, the Boot Camp Drive is no longer listed as an installed drive.
    Example:
In the Terminal, I enter the following command.
    system_profiler SPStorageDataType
    Then it returns this information.
    Storage:
        Lion Client:

The Boot Camp Drive is no longer listed.
I assume this is due to the the fact that the drive is "In Use" however is seems odd since the Mac drive is also in use and it appears without problem. I assume there is no "fix" for this, I was just wondering if someone may have an explaination why?
Also, I do realize that I can query the various interface types like system_profiler SPSerialATADataType to get all the properly installed phycial drives, but then I would have to query all possible interface types, isolate only devices containing Volumes, then consoldate the information to just the information that I need. I was hoping for a cleaner query.

    Thank you for your response.
VMWare may be the cause, but the actual issue I am having is with Apple's System Information. I anticipated resistance from VMWare if I went to them with a question about an Apple software issue (even though VMWare software is part of the equation). I was trying to avoid the inevitable finger pointing game. I thought I would try with Apple Forums first since the issues presents itself within the Apple Software. However, you are correct that VMWare may have an explanation on why Fusion might be interfering with System Information. I will check with them next.
To answer your question. Yes, In most cases I do use Fusion to run Windows side-by-side with the Mac OS. However, that is not always the case. There are a few reasons why I have it setup using a Dual Boot configuration.
One, in some cases, due to the intense programs I occasionally run (graphic applications), I prefer to simply boot straight into Windows via Boot Camp so I may allocate all hardware resources to Windows. Additionally, some graphic applications like to have direct access to hardware and the extra layer of the VM environment can cause problems when an application is trying to directly access specific hardware like a graphics card.
Second, I often use either side, both Mac and PC, for testing. There is an advantage to not having to rely on the Mac OS to run Windows. If, for whatever reason, my Mac becomes unstable due to testing, I can still jump right into Windows to do work if necessary.
Third, I love the Mac OS, but I work in a PC centric organization. If there is a "problem" with my system, it is too easy for other system admins to say, "it's because it's a Mac". Having the definitive separation of the OS's allows me to prove that the Mac OS is not a factor.

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.

  • Windows XP re-installation does not recognize any hard drive - help

    Hi,
    I have X60s Model: 17044JU
    I have original XP installed.
My computer is very slow and I am trying to reinstall XP from my CD (and format HD so I clean everything).
When Windows installations blue screen shows up and loads drivers etc then it tells me that it does not recognize any hard drive.
I thought I may need SCSI or RAID drivers but since I don't have floppy I can not load them.
Any help how to install new XP would be appreciated.
    Thank you

    Hi
I changed BIOS setup from AHCI to Compatibility and indeed it worked.
However there is easier way to reload new system on thinkpad.
I didn't know that but you can press ThinkVantage button when you start your laptop and IBM utilities start up.
Then there is an option to reload the system to be in original state as shipped from the factory. It loads or drivers and initial programs. It also formats your hard drive.
    I found it pretty convenient.

  • Will not recognize internal hard drive

I have a strange problem with a 2009 MacBookPro.  It started acting "strange" for the user over the past few months.  By "strange" I mean it would freeze, or fail to boot, or sometimes even restart without any reason.  Now, it gets even stranger.  Tried the standard things,  RAM reseat, replace, check for loose connectors etc.  It would fail to boot when the hard drive was connected internally.  Then it would give a kernal panic and fail to even recognize a hard drive as being installed.  Did a PRam reset, SMC reset and even the power off/control key to try to reset the open firmware.  No sucess with anything.  This is a suystem with an internal battery.
Yet, when using this exact same hard drive on an external USB drive connection, it would boot fine.  Next tried it in Terminal mode to boot up another MBP.  Failed to boot.  When the 2nd MBP was booted from its internal drive and the suspect machine was plugged in as a Firewire (Terminal mode on "strange" computer) an External Firewire Drive appeared on the desktop, then a few seconds later, an identical copy of the first Ext FW drive appeared.  This went on with evenbtually six copies of the one single Terminal booted hard drive appearing on the desktop of the second computer.  None of the six drives would open or even allow any indiccation of what they contained.
Tried to partition the hard drive when it was put back into the internal slot but it would not unmount and failed to partition.  The same thinmg happened when trying to erase it.  Connected the hard drive via USB to a Windows 7 machine and used it to erase both the Recovery and Main partitions from the ard drive.  Both were erased but the EFI partition could not be erased or cleaned.  Put this same hard drive, as an external USB, into a very old XP machine and there the EFI partition was removed when a "Clean" command was sent via command line.
I then took the, now totally erased hard drive, and put it back into the computer as an internal drive and booted the computer from a 10.8 USB stick so I could partition the now empty hard drive.  The drive was not even recognized as being present.  Did the same thing, but using the USB external connection for that same hard drive.  It partitioned and then formatted with 10.8.1 (what was on the USB stick).  After the OS was installed, the computer would boot using this newly created OS when connected as an external USB drive.  Put the drive back in as the internal drive.  Got a Kernal Panic.  Forced shutdown and retried.  Noi kernal Panic but drive was not even recognized.  Pulled the drive from internal and put it back into the external USB and tried booting.  System would not recognize the drive as even being present.
I then erased and cleaned the drive in the XP machine again and then, using the USB connection on the second computer reinstalled 10.8 from the USB.  When I tried the now newly created software again, the same thing happened as listed above. 2nd machine booted fine on the drive as a USB, "Strange" machine booted fine using the drive as an external USB, Kernal Panicked then would not be recognized in the "Strange" machine.
It appears that when the drive is connected internally. it not only does not have the OS software recognized but will rewrite something in the drive that makes it impossible to be recognized by any Apple.  My first thought was that the EFI partition was corrupted somehow so that was why I tried cleaning the EFI partition along with the other two partitions.  But even with a new EFI and other partitions, the drive was not useable once it was used to try to boot as an internal drive in the suspect computer.
Now here I am dropping into speculation mode.  My guess is that something in the very basic ROM (Pram?) that recognizes a hard drive is in the internal slot and tries to get to the EFI instead fails and in the process it screws up the EFI (or maybe even an address table?) in the hard drive.  If it recognizes that there is no internal hard drive, it will happily boot from either a USB stick, a USB connected external hard drive or a Firewire/Terminal mode computer connected to it.
Sounds like a motherboard problem but I am wondering if it is possible to "flash" the very basic ROM that is at the start of the process back to factory default or maybe just replace the chip if it is the same one used as part of the Firmware password protection system.
Anyone have any other ideas or thoughts about possible solutions or at least a way to definitely identify what the problem's cause?

Answer has been found.  The internal drive SATA cable was replaced and the system is now working correctly.

  • IMac 400dv will not recognize new hard drive installed

    Hi,
I had been having trouble with my iMac 400dv's hard drive. I had posted the problems I was having and had gotten some very nice feedback. The final decision was to install a new hard drive and battery.
I purchased a refurbished 40GB Maxtor to replace my old 20GB. Installation was no problem except that my iMac will not recognize the new drive. If I reinstall the old one, it recognizes it right away, so I know it has been installed correctly.
I took the new hard drive back to the store and the tech said that it wasn't set on the "Master" position. He set it and tested the drive and said that it was fine. I reinstalled and get the same result, no drive can be sellected to install the software. No matter where I set the pin, I get the same result. I called the phone help line (MicroCenter) and the new tech told me that the drive was too big for my mac, which makes no sense to me since they suggested I buy a 100GB in the 1st place.
I have 1GB of memory, my installation disk if for 8.6 and I will bring it up to 9.2 if I can get it running again.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks,
    Lucy

    Lucy Rust...
In my opinion no Macintosh user should attempt to install a refurbished HD under any condition. Especially any HD that is to be bootable as they are no longer reliable for the Mac.
Master setting is a must for the HD and never tinker with an optical setting. Well, if you could mess with the optical setting, expect to do some micro-surgery.
You should be good for a HD up to a capacity of 120GB. The threshold is somewhere around 137GB but you will not find such odd capacity on the market.
I think the rest has been covered.

But I can see the 2nd HDD using "System Informaton" /"System Summary" / "Component".
Drivers I'd loaded since clean installation are:

    - Intel Management Engine Interface 6.0.0.1184

  • LR 4 wont recognize 2nd hard drive in the source during import??

I run 2 hard drives in my PC. One drive is for programs only. The second and larger is for photos/music. When I go to import the source pane ont he left will not recognize the B: drive, Only the C: drive and it will even recognize my M:  drive with is my external. Im not sure what to do at this point to add the B: drive to the souce. Thank you

Sometimes it helps if you put one "dummy" picture on a drive via Win Explorer. So, try this first and see if your drive shows up.
    If this doesn't help:
Letter B is not a good choice for a drive on a PC. This is because of ol-old times when drive letters A and B were reserved for the 6.25" disk (A) and floppy drive (B).
That's why the first drive in today's PCs is still named (lettered) C.
And, I don't know maybe Lr does not recognize drive letters A and B. So rename your drive B to drive D.
You do this in Windows Control Panel >System and Security >Administrative Tools >Computer managaement >Disk Management. In the lower window where it shows your drives, highlight the drive in question then go >Action >All Tasks >Change Drive Letter and Path.
For more info open <Help> in your Control Panel and type <drive letter> into the search box.

Just be careful, the usual "if it doesn't fit, find a bigger hammer" doesn't apply to this model laptop.
Also, there is a part available to adjust the frustration level, I don't happen to have the FRU number available, but I do have a photo and I'm sure you can find a local shop to provide it. Any experienced vendor should be able to match up a similar item from this photo.
It comes in many varieties, this model has a handy extention to aid in installation so you can easily do it with one hand. Others may require two hands to safely install. Use care when installing, one slip can destroy your laptop. Acute abuse can lead to severe embarassing situations and cronic abuse can have impact on your health, so use wisely and always get a spare to share with a friend. • My macbook does not recognize my hard drive

I bought a new hard drive and have gotten a new OS disk but now it shows the folder and blinking question mark every time i turn it on.
What do i need to do next.?

If you insert the OS disk (is it one for this model MacBook or a generic retail OS install disk, or something else?) and boot the computer while holding the C key down on your keyboard, will it boot to the install disk?
If this happens, go into the Utilities and look for Disk Utility. Does DU recognize the new hard drive? What format is the hard drive initialized to?
If not initialized using Mac OS Extended - Journaled format, you should go to the Erase tab and set it to that format and erase the drive. This will correct the format.
Once this has been done, quit Disk Utility and try to run the installer.

If that doesn't work, install OS X and then follow the prompts to transfer your data from a backup. If that too doesn't work, set up an account and then restore your data in the time-travel interface.

Last night I have daisychained one exteranl hard drive with my new xternal that has a copy of all my music on it. I changed the folder to my new hard drive the other day and it was working fine. Well, last night I was working on updating some music and I didn't realize that my iBook G4 laptop wasn't plugged in so the screen went dark. I panic a bit and power downed my two hard drives without dismounting them properly. When I realized it was just the power cord I plugged it back in and I thought everything was fine. Now this morning when I try to run off of only my new xternal almost all of my library is showing that it can't be found. Now, when I plugged in an old external and daisychained it with the new one it works fine. What do I need to do so that it recognizes only the new hard drive with everything on it. I tried changing the folder in the advanced tab and it still comes up unrecognized. Please help me I have tons of gigs coming up soon and I use my itunes as a reference tool.
