OSB backup

Hi Guru's
We having OSB 10.4 on Solaris 10 with SL 24 TL Auto loader ( Tapes doesn't having Bar-code ), while firing file system backup (Sol 10 is the client OS) , it is hanging . and i have logged in to TL console then it shows loading and unloading. while OSB catalog backup is getting fired on the associated media family . please guide me where the problem lies and guide me to solve
Best Regards
ASA

HI Rich
i found that OSB is not able to Label the media because , it is nor able to create the associate files under /usr/local/oracle/backup/admin/state/family/<media_family>,
so as a work around we have created the flies manually and fire the backup. but i am wondering that why OSB is not able to update those files automatically, i have tried after a service re-start but no luck, any one can guide ?
Best Regards
ASA

  • OSB-Backup speed has to be increased.

When we performing database backup on OSB, Its taking 16 mins for 5MB Database.
Please advice me how to increase the speed of backup in OSB.
    Thanks in advance,

Just feel the TC.. if it is dead cold (ie same termperature as ambient) after a few hours.. then the power supply has actually failed.. normally they don't come back on again but the delta brand supply has strange symptoms cf the standard flextronics which are far more common.
If the TC still feels a little warm.. definitely above ambient.. then the board has shut down.
    What model is yours?
There is a logic fault in gen 3 boards. I am working at tracing the problem.. but as time goes on the problem becomes more serious until the board power cycles every couple of minutes.
Let me suggest if it is still under warranty or you have AppleCare, get it replaced. The issue will only get worse. If there is anything you want, recover it now whilst it still works and get a replacement. But keep powering the old one to diagnose the problem.
If you can come up with any more info.. logs etc it could help me figure out the issue.

  • OSB Backup performance

    People,
I am setting up an Oracle Secure Backup (10.1.0.3) on Linux. The media server is equipped with an IBM LTO3 tape drive. The backup and restore functionality work fine, however the performance is poor. Backing up 1.5Gb of redo logs takes over 40 minutes.
From the Secure backup GUI I am noting that the rman job is marked as "Introduction time" xx and "Earliest exec time" is 10 minutes past xx. This is the same for all database jobs (datafile/controlfile/archivelog). From were can I reduce the 10 minutes to 10 seconds in the attempt to improve the performance.
    Thanks
    Kenneth

    Mike,
Thanks for the feedback I will try changing the settings as they are currently default and will keep you updated.
    $ obtool

  • Doubt regarding dump based OSB backup

    Hi All,
Whenever I do a dump based backup, I can see the files are not backed up sequentially in fact they are backed up across volumes as parts.
For example let's say I have a volume of size 100G and then a dataset(containing directories and files) 150G and when I backup this dataset it will occupy two volumes. So when I check the files or directories location in the volumes, parts of files/directories are present in both the volumes.

Is there a way that I can make sure that the volumes are filled sequentially?
    -Srikanth

To try to put this more clearly:
A given version of exp can read its, and any older, version of database, but writes its output in its version format. It can work with its, and older, versions of the database, but not newer ones.
A given version of imp can read its, and any older, version of export file format. It can work with its, and older, versions of the database, but not newer ones.
(I think there is some limit to how far back this compatibility goes, but this has been true for me whenever I've tried it).
Thus to move data from 9.2.0 to 9.0.2, you would want to export using the 9.0.2 export utility and import using the 9.0.2 utility. To move from 9.0.2, you could export using either version of exp, but you'd want to import using 9.2.0.

  • OSB Unused block compression and Undo backup compression

    Dear all.
I know that osb backup software is faster than other vendor software especially oracle database backup area.
There are two special method (Unused block compression and Undo backup compression)
But, normally in case of comparable product using same RMAN API(Veritas/Legato etc...), they only backup used block and skip unused block, right?
I'm confused, what is different from used block only backup and unused block compression.
Please explain detail about unused block compression and Undo backup compression.
    Sorry about my poor knowledge.
    Thanks.

This is explained in detail in the OSB technical white paper:

  • How to distribute RMAN backup among tape volumes in OSB

    Hi Guys,
I would like to ask some information about OSB. I have finally set up our Oracle Secure Backup 10.3.0.3.0 and initial OSB backup to tape is good using our test environment.
Now, our production servers has the following details:
    Serv01
    - Oracle Database 11.1.0.7
    - Windows Server 2003 R2
    - Current RMAN backup to disk full (level 0) is at 2TB.
    Serv02
    - this is our media server for OSB and we manage from here all other servers that we would like OSB to be implemented.
    -Windows Server 2003 R2
    - We have IBM tape library here with four drives
    - Our tape volumes are 480GB each (compressed) we about 50 of them.
-Each tape volume has barcodes and our library has barcode reader
How can I group certain tapes (as a media family?) and use them for our level 0 backup. As you know, one tape cannot hold our level 0 backup so we need at least 5 tape volumes to hold our level 0 backup. Is there a step by step process of doing this? Or does anyone know how to do this?
Thanks and I would really appreciate your thoughts about this.

Yes, media families (like tape pools) are used to group backups on tape. Using a database backup storage selector, you set-up media policy so OSB will automatically select appropriate storage when for the backup per your settings. You may want to refer to this white paper which discusses media management:

  • How to temporarily suspend backups for a host?

We are running production OSB backups for a site with approximately 50 filesystems,
consisting of full, incremental, quarterly archive, and on-demand archive backups.
    Our installation consists of
    o administration master - obtool version 10.4.0.2.0 (64-bit OEL 5.8)
    o media servers - obtool version 10.4.0.2 (64-bit OEL 5.8)
o SL8500 library - managed by ACSLS 8.1 with admin server attach point
    Problem:
We recently lost a ZFS storage appliance storage pool due to pool corruption.
All backed-up filesystems were restored to another host pending a rebuild of
    the corrupted ZFSSA.
Currently all backups are fail because they cannot communicate with the down
host. We want to suspend all attempts to back up the corrupted host pending
the rebuild. We have tried taking the host out of service via 'chhost -O'
but the scheduler launches backups that hang indefinitely with a session
    status of 'awaiting resource availability'.
Is there any way to suspend backups of a host temporarily without having to
remove it from all the schedules it's in? Seems there should be but I've
been unable to find this in the docs.
    Appreciate any help.
    Thanks,

You can just comment it out of the dataset using a #
Then when you're ready to put it back, just uncomment it again.

  • OSB Catalog Sizing & Other Catalog Questions

I'm new to OSB, so was trying to find any sizing information on how much disk capacity I need to consider for the OSB catalog on my Admin/Media server.
    Obviously typical metrics like:
    ■ The number of files being backed up
    ■ The frequency and the retention period of the backups
has a direct influence on the size and growth of the catalog, but are there any formulas which can be used to estimate required capacity, based on these (or other) metrics?
Does the catalog ever get compressed (or even deduplicated) on disk during it's lifetime?
Also, are catalog backups written to tape in the same way that normal OSB backups are? And what happens if the size of the catalog exceeds a single piece of media?

    Thanks Rich,
so for the largest client you talk about, once its backup has completed and the catalog is being updated, it now needs 24 GB of space for OSB to update the host's own catalog file?
Of the 5TB of data, do you have an idea roughly how many files that might include?
Going back to my original sizing question, if I look at Veritas NetBackup Backup Planning and Performance Tuning Guide, for example, there are two methods described there that assist in sizing the amound of space needed for the NetBackup catalog (pages 28 - 31). Both methods use as their basis a 3180 bytes catalog size for each file retained. Do you know of a similar figure?
To your point about hosting the catalog on fast disks, are there any recommendations as to particular IO characteristics for them? For example, would hosting the catalog on an NFS share be a good idea (if it was provided on a 10 GbE connection, for example)? Or would internal disks or even LUNs from FC-SAN attached arrays be better?

  • How to install and configure oracle secure backup(osb-10.4.0.3.0_linux.x64) in linux

    Hello,
We are planning to install and configure Oracle Secure Backup Version 10.4 in Linux server. I had searched documents and i have not find any relevant steps to install and configure in OEL 6.2.
Can anyone please suggest me how to install and configure OSB.
    Regards,
    Anil

    Hi
Installing OSB on Oracle Linux is just the same as installing on any other supported linux and is described in Installation and Configuration guide. Just stick with the directories and procedure described in install guide and you should be fine.
For media server choose a physical host due to performance considerations. I think it is mentioned in docs somewhere.

When im performing DB backup, my DB backup job should not get failed if my node1 fails. What is the best practice to achieve this?

    Hi,
Each Host that participates in an OSB administrative domain must also have some pre-configured way to resolve a host name to an IP address.Use DNS, NIS etc to do this.
Specify cluster IP in OSB, so that OSB always looks for Cluster IP only instead of physical IPs of each node.
    Explanation :
If it is 2-Node OR 4-Node, when Cluster software installed in these nodes we have to configure Cluster IP so that when one node fails Cluster IP will automatically move to the another node.
This cluster IP we have to specify whether it is RMAN backup or Application JDBC connection. Failing to second node/another Node is the job of Cluster IP. So wherever we install cluster configuration we have to specify in all the failover places specify CLUSTER IP.
    Hope it helps..
    Thanks

  • OSB installation on Oracle Database Appliance (ODA) for filesystem backup

There does not appear to be any special documentation for installing the OSB client on an ODA.  However, the following errors occur on all of our ODAs when attempting to install the OSB client:
    [root@oda000 backup]# pwd
    /usr/local/oracle/backup
    [root@oda000 backup]# which uncompress
    /usr/bin/uncompress
    [root@oda000 backup]# /opt/osb/osb-10.4.0.2.0_linux.x64_cdrom120606/setup
Welcome to Oracle's setup program for Oracle Secure Backup. This
program loads Oracle Secure Backup software from the CD-ROM to a
    filesystem directory of your choosing.
This CD-ROM contains Oracle Secure Backup version 10.4.0.2.0_LINUX64.
Please wait a moment while I learn about this host... done.

Loading linux86_64 administrative server, media server, client...unzip: cannot find or open /usr/tmp/OB531, /usr/tmp/OB531.zip or /usr/tmp/OB531.ZIP.

    (made from /opt/osb/osb-10.4.0.2.0_linux.x64_cdrom120606/linux86_64/gserver.tz)
This is probably due to the uncompress utility being unavailable.
Make sure uncompress is available and then re-run setup.
    [root@oda000 backup]# which uncompress
    /usr/bin/uncompress
    [root@oda000 backup]# ls -lah /usr/bin/uncompress
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 14 Feb 22 17:33 /usr/bin/uncompress -> /usr/bin/unzip
Note that the symlink of uncompress to unzip is directly from the OSB installation documentation. None of those files exist in /usr/tmp, but there is a similarly named .Z file there.  However the file name changes, so it cannot just be renamed or manually uncompressed.  I also tried extracting from the mentioned "gserver.tz" file, to no avail.
Please advise as to how to complete OSB client installation on an ODA.

There is a white paper on using ODA and OSB:
