OSD Computer Name

I have seen quite a few posts here about setting the computer name by prompting the user and/or using the MDT.  My goal is to do bare-metal, "unknown" builds that assign the computer name to be the serial number from the BIOS.  All our machines are Dell.  I would like to not have to integrate the MDT if possible, but if the MDT is the only way to do it, so be it.
Thanks in advance.

I created the Set Task Sequence Variable step before Apply Windows Settings step... I wouldn't know how to "inject" the %SERIALNUMBER% into the Apply Windows Settings step if I wanted to...

  • Computer Name prompt with Country Code

    Using SCCM 2012 R2..
Currently we have 21 global sites indicated by a two digit country code, for example United States US, United Kingdom, GB, Spain ES  etc.....
We are a Dell shop so we want the serial number as well.
Our end result should look like this. United States Computer
    <CountryCode>-<Serialnumber>
    US-23GHT54 for example.
What is the best way to have a drop down or prompt for country code in computer name field when a tech starts the OSD process??

    Hi
You can have a look at two of my blog post. The first one will show you how to enable Powershell support in your boot images:
    http://www.mimercon.dk/da/easyblog/entry/adding-powershell-support-in-configuration-manager-2012-r2-boot-images
And the second one will guide you through all the step required to implement a Powershell GUI prompting for a Computer Name if the machine is unknown:
    http://www.mimercon.dk/da/easyblog/entry/prompt-for-computer-name-during-configmgr-2012-r2-os-deployment-1
I know that this is not exactly what you want but you would "only" need to create your own Powershell GUI where you can select the country code and append the serial number to get your computer name generated. And then you could just follow the
step in the second post and substitue my Prompt-Computer-Name GUI with your own.
If you know a bit about about Windows Forms and Powershell it is fairly easy to create even though it might be easy for me to say that :)
If you want I could create a basic GUI for you but you would have to be specific in how you would like it to look and I would need all the country codes you need in the drop-down box. You can find my e-mail at my web site.

  • File sharing afp:// address not computer name

Just setting up my new iMac and the file sharing afp:// address does not match the computer's name (Brute Squad), it's pulled in my old PowerBook's name (Alumen). I'm assuming it came from my Apple/iCloud account since that was the only computer I had registered when I set the iMac up. Restarting didn't help. Any ideas?

You can change the computer name in the System Preferences > Sharing pane, change the name at the top.
    Best of luck.

  • How to change the computer name

I need to change the computer name but after this I cannot access to the historical data (printing alarms).
I have already changed the settings in Options->System and restarted the system.
With MAX 3.0 I can see that all the alarm records are stored with the old computer name \\computer name\process\....
How can I do to read the old alarms with the new computer name?
    Thank you
    Michael

    Hi,
When you change the computer name in Options>>System, you are not changing the name of the computer. Rather, you are telling Lookout to log to either a remote or local system. Here are the specifics:
    1. Computer Name: Name you want the traces to appear with (\\computer_name\process\...)
    2. Default Computer: Computer you want to log to. If the name listed here is different than your computer's name (as seen by Windows), then it will attempt to log directly to that remote machine.
    3. Default Path: Directory on either your local or remote machine that you want to log to.
To change the name of your local computer, you will need to do that in Windows. If you have WinXP, you can do this by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting Computer Name.
    Go
    od Luck

Do a google search for environment variables inside windows.
    Here is one website.

  • I bought a new laptop with Windows 7. My computer name in Windows has changed, and now, my Ipad can't find Itunes

I bought a new laptop with Windows 7. My computer name in Windows has changed, and now, my Ipad can't find Itunes, and Itunes can't find my Ipad. [email protected]

Ok, if reinstalling iTunes as suggested above does not resolve the issue of iTunes recognising the iPad then try this -
Firstly, make sure that your device is not hidden (left hand pane). If it just reads device then toggle between SHOW and HIDE.
Secondly, try all the other ports on your computer, even a number of times.
Thirdly, make sure your lead /connections are no faulty.
Fourthly, if you have another computer try plugging your device into it without taking any action, give it a moment, remove it and try it back in your other computer again.
Failing all that, see here - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
And failing all that put the device into Recovery mode. See here and note the paragraph 'If you restore from a different computer.... ' down near the bottom of the page -
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/assistant/itunes/
As for making your new laptop your 'home computer' follow these instructions -
    1. Without connecting your iPad to your computer -
    A) Install iTunes / make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed.
    B) Go to the Store tab and click on "Authorise This Computer".
    C) Go to Edit, click on Preferences [iTunes and Preferences on Macs] and click on Devices. Put a check mark in the box next to "Prevent  iPods/iPhones/iPads from syncing automatically". Click OK and close iTunes.
    2.  Connect your iPad to your computer -
    A) Start iTunes (it will not start automatically because of the action at 1(C) above).
    B) Right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select "Transfer purchases".
    C) When the transfer has completed, right click on your iPad again and select "Backup".
    D) When the backup has completed, left click on your iPad, click on the Apps tab, and put a check mark in the box next to "Sync Apps", and then click on "Apply" (bottom right).
    E) Unless you want to always do a manual sync (as I do), go back to Edit, Preferences [iTunes and Preferences on Macs] and uncheck the box next to "Prevent your iPod.....".
    F) Finally, on your iPad, check that everything is syncing properly. If not, go back to iTunes and check all settings.
NB You should not lose any apps. However, any 'purchased' missing apps can be downloaded again FOC. As with updates, this must be done with the Apple ID under which they were originally 'purchased'.
Also see here as to moving your music to your new computer -

    Hi Lynn,
Thanks for your analyst and reply, I run the command as you suggested and checked accordingly to Task Manager, but seems none of them indicates a firewall or anti-virus.

  • Can you make Sysprep on Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2 Prompt for a Computer Name

    Hi guys,
Our Windows 7 Unattend.xml has always made Sysprep prompt for Computer Name. I'm struggling to achieve that with Windows 8.1 and Svr 2012 R2.
    Firstly: Is it still possible?
    Secondly: If so, How?
    Thanks

OOBE will only hide pages that contain the answers in the XML. So if you want OOBE to prompt for a computer name, make sure your XML does not contain the ComputerName object.

  • Time Machine and computer name change

I just recently reinstalled the operator system after a computer crash when i did so changed the computer name and now when i go into time machine to restore the settings it only shows up as one sparse disc image.
i have found that when i can mount it manually but the files are not usable and when i mount it with time machine the history does not appear.

Go to System Preferences - Sharing and change the computer name there. You can also, optionally, change the name of your hard drive to further clarify the origin of your backups. Click once on the "Macintosh HD" on your desktop, then click its name to allow you to edit it.

  • How to get the computer name in a text box automatically?

    Hi,
I am using flash cs4 (AS3). How can I get the computer name/username in a text box created for grabbing Username from the computer and show it in the username textbox automatically?
    Thanks.

You can't running a SWF on a webpage. Can you imagine if a SWF had access to that OS-level information? It breaches everything Flash, browsers and the web stands for, which is "not being an application", therefore it has absolutely no access to your computer. Especially information like your username.
If you're running a flash projector, that's different. Not that a projector can do that either, but projectors are applications and can be extended by things like MDM Zinc and ScreenTime mProjector. Going that route opens up the constraints on Flash Projectors and lets you tap into things like .dlls. Only via that route are you going to be able to get at such a low level item like the current logged on user.

  • Changing the Computer Name... when it's greyed out in the Sharing Prefs?

    Okay, here's a weird one.
Using Carbon Copy Cloner 3, I recently cloned the hard drive on my iBook G4 (OS X 10.5.4)—it was dying and I needed to swap in a new one. I made the swap, using the cloned version of my old drive, and everything was wonderful.
The new drive is great. The only artifact of the change is that when I see my iBook on a network, instead of the original computer name (let's call it +David's iBook+ for argument's sake), I get +David's iBook_1+. When I go to the Sharing Preferences pane, in the field where I should get my good old iBook's name, I get that _1 tacked on again, and instead of being able to edit it, the name is greyed out!
The hostname is fine. I can edit that. But the computer name refuses to be changed by any of the normal methods. I could probably go into Terminal and edit the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfigurations/preferences.plist file. But I get the feeling that there's something else going on here.
    Any thoughts?
(I'm now wishing I'd just restored using Time Machine. Old habits die hard.)

Thanks! I should have mentioned that I'd already tried that. Several times. There are no other computers with the same name as mine on either my home or office network.
I can click on the "Edit" button and change the name to "David.local" or whatever, and it'll stay that way—but it doesn't show up on the LAN. When I look for the computer over the network—either using Bonjour or the Apple-K command in the Finder—it shows up with its old name. If I try to connect with "David.local" (or whatever), I get an error saying the server can't be found.
Since posting, I've also tried logging in as the root user and changing it there. No dice.
I had to replace the hard drive (the reformatting that caused me to clone the disk in the first place turned out not to solve the problem, which was that the hard drive was failing); for a week I was using an external drive clone as the startup disk for my iMac. It let me change the name there just as it should have. No more +David's iBook_1+. Woohoo!
But when I copied the disk back onto my brand new internal drive... There it was again. Greyed out. Can't get at it.
    Grrrrrr.
Again, it's not a big deal; I want to change the name so that it fits the naming convention at my office. But it's really bugging me! (Obviously.)
I suppose I could reinstall and migrate the accounts and apps over....
