OSS makes very high-pitched sound when turned on

I recently replaced ALSA with OSSv4 on my Arch install. The sound quality is much clearer, but when I start OSS it makes an extremely loud high-pitched sound.
I have determined that the sound is coming from input-mix, and I have temporarily solved the problem by checking "input-mix-mute" in ossxmix, but sometimes the mixer settings do not get applied when I boot, and I am forced to shut down my laptop to stop the sound. Do you have any idea why input-mix would be outputting this noise? I would really like to get rid of this problem.

Quick update - I brought my iMac to an Apple Store, and they identified the logic board as a probable culprit, suggesting a complete swap of the logic board for a cost of >1000 chf (700 USD) - so for now, I haven't fixed it but bought a electrical socket that I can turn off, which (sort of) fixes the problem.
Unfortunately 2 weeks later the screen decided to give up working, flickering and then pitch-black. Numerous phone calls and store visits later the ony option I'm given is again to replace the logic board. As the unit is over 2 years old and I did not purchase AppleCare, that leaves me between an expensive fit or buying a new one...

Very high pitch sound on new Quad

Just got my Quad yesterday
Everything is good, except that it has a very high pitch sound that is very annoying and it hurts my ears in the long run.
I disconnected the HD and superdrive to see if I could locate the source, but it is still there.
I thought about pulling the gpu (6600 256MB), but I don't know if the Quad will start up without a gpu.
I thought the 6600 was supposed to be with a fan, but all I see is black cooling ribs.
Any others with this sound ?
Its not a fan noise, and not a pump noise. It is like a 'electronic' whine.

I have sensitive hearing and noticed something similar when I got my 2.5GHz liquid-cooled G5. It was a constant sound and believe it was coming from the cooling pump. Does your sound ever vary? Try running System Load and see if you can get it to vary.

My G5 Dual 2.5GHz freezes with a very high pitch sound from inside the comp. It happens occasionally after a few days of everything running smoothly. Someone can help ?

Although it sounds to me like you have tried most of the troubleshooting steps, this document is a good overall reference to address this particular problem: Power Mac G5: What to do if you see black, white, or no video at start up
Have you tried another monitor and/or double-checked your cable and its connections? If everything else is working as expected that would certainly be a major suspect.

It is nice to hear your opinion but I think it is not so objective. I have the same notebook model since 8 months and my AC adapter does not produce high pitched sound. It runs as expected. For me it sounds like defective AC adapter and I hope you will get one for free (warranty).
If Toshiba sell thousands of Satellite A210 can you imagine they do such mistake? I do not believe this? Every company has quality control and such mistakes are extremely rare and maybe it can happen by individual products.
I really do not understand that ASP can say something like this. Strange people!

A very high pitched sound @ startup

Hello and thanks in advance for any leads.
I had a very strange thing happen. At startup there appeared a VERY loud and high pitched sound just at the time menus began appearing on top of the desktop. At first I thought it was the smoke alarm! it was so loud. There has been no new updates or software installed (that I know of...).
It has happened a few times since, and the only common thing I've noticed is that it does this after I've moved my laptop while it's on. Say from the desk to the reading chair in my office (distance of 5ft maybe). If I shut it down at that point and restart later it would do it. I cannot repeat this issue, it's just that the few times it has happened that is the only commonalty.
Is my motherboard, HD, or sound card about to go?

That's what I was thinking as well, that it is a Hardware issue. I have replaced the sound card on the Pismo about a year or so back, (though, I don't know why it would start acting up now)?
To answer your question, it is a continuous piercing sound (very loud, almost unbearable)!

High pitch squeal when turning up volume and an echo sound

I have never gotten good audio from my computer......any time I want to watch or hear something I have to turn it up to about 35 before I hear anything and then a deafening high pitch squeal happens that makes it impossible to listen to anything.....if I plug in my headphones there is so much feed back with a horrible echo sound that I cant stand to listen for long.....I want to know if there is anything I can do to get decent sound from this laptop. tia

If you are running Windows 7 or lower you can run MS Fix It to help with this issue. If you are running Windows 8 or 8.1 you have a built in troubleshooter,
Press the Windows key +C to open charms
Type troubleshoot audio and follow the on screen prompts.
You can run the HP Support Assistant to aid with resolving issues and updating drivers. If this has not helped, please provide the information requested.

Mac Mini makes high-pitched sound when light images displayed on monitor

I have a Mac Mini 1.5Ghz G4 with 80GB/combo drive.
Occasionally, it will start to emit a high-pitched whine. The whine doesn't seem to be emitting from the built-in speaker. It comes intermittently. It stops as soon as I start shutting down the Macintosh, although if I wait it has stopped on it's own after a few minutes.
Here's the weird part.
I have some control over the volume of the pitch when it is occurring by changing the amount of "bright" objects on display on the screen. I have a dark desktop image in the background. When the high-pitched whine started, I was using Safari looking at a web page with a white background. When I hid Safari, the volume of the sound dropped to be almost unhearable. I switched to OmniOutliner where I had a single window open that was about half the size of the Safari window I hid. It too had a white background. The high-pitched whine returned at about half the volume it was at when the Safari web page was opened. I hid OmniOutliner, and it dropped down again. Resizing the windows led to a corresponding change in the volume of the whine.
I would take it in to a Mac Genuis, except the high-pitched whine starts when it wants to.
I've already googled the problem and all I can find is an instance of a video card in a PowerMac G5 emitting a high-pitched whine.
If anyone can illuminate some ideas on the fix or at least the cause of this issue, it would be much appreciated.

If you search around you will find this is a common complaint, not of the mini, but of PowerBooks, iBooks and other PC notebook computers. The reason that people report this issue so frequently with notebook computers is because they are so, otherwise, quiet and that makes it easy to hear such sounds. I guess you can put the mini in the category of quiet computers.
What you hear is likely the result of a phenomenon known as magnetostriction. You are hearing magnetic cores, as found in chokes and transformers inside the mini, vibrate at their operating frequency, which can vary according to changing circuit loads, which is why it can be come-and-go and also change in pitch.
Below is a wikipedia link on magnetostriction if you care to learn more. It's nothing to worry about but it can be annoying. Makes you feel like you are sharing your room with a mosquito.

G246HL high pitched sound

Hello all! I just bought 2x G246HL monitors and they are both up and running lovely, except that one of them is making a very high pitched sound when displaying the PCs output (it doesn't make this noise if it is just showing the Acer and Energy Star logos). I have tried adjusting brightness settings as that helped with my old monitor, and changed cables and inputs to see if that was the problem, but I'm not having any luck so far.I know that sound can often be capacitors, but I'm hoping there's a simple solution that one of you guys might know of, as this noise is quite irritating. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi Acer-Justin, thanks very much for your advice! I was all set to do just that when I received a suggestion to turn the brightness on the monitor's built-in menu up to max (and adjust brightness settings in OS to compensate) and this got rid of the sound immediately!

High Pitch sound after inserting MAC OS x DVD on superdrive

When inserted the Mac OS x DVD to install Windows Drivers in bootCamp the drive started to make a high pitch sound (loud) while rotating on high speed. Is this normal?
I've tested with a DVD-R disk and didn't noticed any noise, but the disk rotates at a lower revolution in this case.
What Do you think about this? Should I return it?

Then 10.4.0 Server won't install. There will be drivers missing.
If your supplied restore disks are bad, then you need to get those replaced.
Simply don't use the Mighty Mouse during the install, there's no need.
When installing a stock 10.4 server overtop a system that comes with a newer OS, even if it's just 10.4.1, Apple has a very specific set of procedures you must follow

The target-mode hint won't work for installing Mac OS X client (vs. Server) because your powerbook is a G4 and the Mini is Intel-based.
And there is no Universal Mac OS X client installer yet.
If your Server install is the 10.4.7 Universal Binary version, then it should be new enough to install onto your Powerbook, although it is not supported hardware. In which case you might be able to use the Target-mode tip suggested. It may or may not work.
Probably the only legal way for you to do this is to uninstall OS X Server from your mini first. You'll have to check with Apple on that one.
At the very least, if you are only using it on one machine then in spirit if not in letter, you might be fine.

High pitch screech when LAN is transfering data over network

I found this strange. But whenever data (large amounts) is sent through my puter over the network, the LAN chip or whatever makes a high pitch sound. What is with this?

Firewall enabled and for example opening a torrent with more than 100 peers made the northbridge screech and crashed the network after five minutes. Disabling the firewall helped a bit, removed the screeching atleast, but it's still lagging behind my old AT7-MAX2(VIA KT400) onboard LAN in 'performance'.

When I access Wealth Engine X My computer makes a high pitch whining sound. Why ?

When I log in to this website My computer makes a high pitch whining sound.
I also have this problem when surfing on Auto Surf Pro; and recently, while the auto surf was running, My computer shut off its
power, and I had to run the repair diagnostic to get it to start again.
I also have this problem with Empower Network with regard to the videos on there; and some of the videos "get" an "unable to load plugin" message when I try to open them.

Sounds like the drive although I suppose it could be fans if something is wrong with them. when my fans go into high performance mode they do not make this kind of noise. Are you also noticing more vibration when this occurs to the left of the trackpad where the hard drive is? About the only thing you can do is take it into the Apple store and have them look at it.

Brightness control up/down makes high pitched sound in Win 7 !

Anyone notice a high pitched sound coming from the rear right side of the mac book pro 15" 2008 model? This sound seems to only affect Win 7 and not Snow Leopard though I have noticed a slight change in the sound rhythms from the notebook in leopard when you press the brightness controls though its barely noticible.
So anyone install Win 7 and notice this sound? Sounds like the sound you hear in an airplane, kind of like a dog whistle like sound. I took it to the apple store and they couldn't do anything until Apple officially supports Win 7,

i got this on my macbook pro 17 snow leopard...after 50% brightness, the I hear that but from the left speaker not from the right. Also, the sounds seems to be stronger at 80% and at full brightness, the sound fades away..

When on "Maximum Performace" CPU makes a high pitched noise.

When my T61 is set to Max Performance it makes a high pitched noise. But on the rest of the profiles there is absoutly no noise... Any ideas on the problem?

Freeze plus high pitch sound during win7 start up

Hi,
I have a problem with my new W520.
During win7 start up, my computer often freezes, and when it does so, a high pitch sound sets in.
After turning off the computer and trying again a couple of times (often 4-5) it suddenly works again.
I think it is a temperature problem that makes the computer mess up during start up when it is not warm enough.
I took the computer with me on a small vacation to south east Asia where the temperature is generally higher than here in Denmark, and during my vacation I had no problems at all.
Is there anyone who can help me with suggestions to what the problem might be?

Does it freeze and shutdown or just freeze?
Can you try booting without the AC adapter attached?
