OSX 10.4 to snowleopard

I have a MacBook 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with OS 10.4 on which I want to install SL. Obviously I must first install 10.5. However, I thought I had an installation disc for 10.5, but it is for a newer type laptop and doesn't work on mine.
Is there any way to get 10.6 installed?

What it says is "Snow Leopard is an upgrade for Leopard users and requires a Mac with an Intel processor." Both those things are true, but the first is not exclusive -- if it was, then the box set would also only be for Leopard users, & it clearly is not. The Apple pages offer you a deal on the box set, but it is just that -- an offer that itself is described simply as the best way to upgrade, & not just for Tiger users.
in short, it is product promotion, which should not be confused with legally binding licensing requirements. You will find those in the Hardware & Software Product Agreements links.
In particular, refer to the Mac OS X (Snow Leopard) link & to section 2 of that document. The $29 product comes with the Single Use License, which you can verify as I did or by calling Apple. Note that the other products in the box set have their own end user licensing agreements & for them you are bound by their terms.
Also note that if you get the $9.95 'up-to-date' disc or the "CPU Drop-in DVD" supplied free with some Macs you are getting a Leopard Upgrade License & the terms of section 2c of the Snow Leopard EULA apply to you. These are not retail products & are 'bound' to the specific Mac that qualifies you to receive these discs.
I know from experience that the moderators will remove any post that suggests breaking the EULA or misinterpret them. If this post remains, you can consider it more evidence that what I say is true.

  • Camera RAW plug in needed.

I have PSE6 installed on my MacBook Pro - OSX 10.6.8 (SnowLeopard) - and I now have a Fujifilm HS20 EXR, but I cannot use the RAW mode as PSE6 doesn't recognise my RAW files.
Where can I get a Camera RAW plug-in update that will allow me to carry on using the RAW facility on my new camera ?

To use your raw images in PSE6 you would need to download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download click here DNG Converter 7.3
Mac download click here DNG Converter 7.3
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

What matters is the version of iPhoto you have on the different machines. Can you tell us what they are, and what exact error message you get.

I want to install my original SnowLeopard (from the installation disc) to a partition I created in the now upgraded Mavericks OSX, How can I install it on the new partition?

    That's easy.
    2 methods:
    1. Change the Startup Disk in System Preferences, then restart:
    2. Hold down the "Option" key while starting or restarting the Mac. Then chosse the partition that you want to startup from.
The 1st mehtod is the quickest, because you don't have the additional step of choosing the drive. Plus, whatever you have selected in System Preferences becomes the default startup drive.

Hi - I have an older MacBook Pro (osx 10.4.11. Can I upgrade it so it will run snowleopard?

    All MBPs up to and including the 2011 models can run Snow Leopard.  You will have to purchase a disk from the Apple online store;
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    Ciao.

  • Where can I find a retail copy of MAC OSX Snowleopard, that has all the drivers, for both desktop and Laptops?

Where can I find a retail copy of MAC OSX Snowleopard, that has all the drivers, for both desktop and Laptops?

No. 10.6.3 was the last retail release of Snow Leopard. Download the 10.6.8 Combo updater and put it on a flash drive to make it easier to install the largest part of the update.
Also, don't push the same disk image of SL to your Macs unless they are exactly the same model as it was originally installed on. The wrong hardware drivers will otherwise be in use.

  • Illustrator CS4 SDK on Apple OSX 10.6 Snowleopard and Xcode 3.2 howto

I can't compile any of the samplecode from the current illustrator CS4 SDK
ai_cs4_sdk_mac_367 on an Apple Mac with OSX 10.6 snow leopard (SL) and Xcode 3.2
    (see some errormessages at end)
    The documentation mentions Xcode 2.4.1.
Is it possible at all to use this SDK 367 with snowleopard and Xcode 3.2 ?
If not, then how do you plug-in writers update your illustrator plug-ins for working on Snowleopard ?
    thx, j.
some of the errors I get while compiling the 'Tutorial' samplecode for "10.6|Debug|i386" are :
../../illustratorapi/illustrator/AIRaster.h:221: error: conflicting declaration 'typedef long unsigned int uint32'
    /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.6.sdk/System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Headers/cssmco nfig.h:69: error: 'uint32' has a previous declaration as 'typedef uint32_t uint32'
    AIPlatformFileDlgOpts::AIPlatformFileDlgOpts()
../../illustratorapi/illustrator/AIUser.h:381: error: extra qualification 'AIPlatformFileDlgOpts::' on member 'AIPlatformFileDlgOpts'
    /Applications/ai_cs4_sdk_mac_367/Adobe Illustrator CS4 SDK/samplecode/Tutorial/Resources/Tutorial.r:20:0 SysError 0 during open of "TutorialID.h".

thanks mrwren, for your confirmation that you could compile the
samples from ai_cs4_sdk_mac_367. I searched further and found e.g. the following fixes:
    sample: Tutorial
    1. AIRaster.h
    below #define BRAVO_TYPES:
    //typedef unsigned long uint32;//loj outcommented
    2. AIUser.h
    /*AIPlatformFileDlgOpts:: loj commented out*/ AIPlatformFileDlgOpts()
    : fCount(0), fFilters(NULL)
    3. TutorialID.h
add the file Tutorial.h to the Groups&Files section of the Tutorial.xcodeproj window
by dragging it from the finder into this Groups&Files section
(The right click > "Add > Existing Files … " did not let me do this (file was gray although rwx-access))
    I compiled for "10.6 | release | i386" and the resulting plug-in Tutorial.aip
did load well into AI CS4 14.0.0 and worked OK.
    sample: Annotator:
    changed project settings
-Architectures > Base SDK : "/Developers/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk" changed to "Mac OSX 10.6"
(I installed snowleopard without the optional 10.4 support)
-Deployment > Mac OSX target : 10.4 changed to "Mac OSX 10.6"

  • Time Capsule 1TB Will this unit still be compatible with Lion OSX ,As I have not switched yet until other programs I have installed on my mac are up to speed

I have had my eye on one of these for quite some time in the past and up until just very recently have puchased a 1TB Time Capsule at rather quite a reasonable price or so I had thought compared to what they had been priced at originally in the past which I had thought to be a bit over the top as is with most of apple's products or should I more say marketing tactic's,
Anyway I was just wanting to know in general is this unit already so to speak on it's way out or becoming obsolete in comparison to the 2TB's and 3TBs Time Capsules ,
Not the implicating the obvious being storage in differences but more so the compatibility issue side of things,
In short will this unit still work with OSX Lion for example, or is it only limited to Leopard and Snowleopard,
The place I had purchased this unit from are more or less in the dark themselves and although more than helpful are more a musical instrument outlet than a computer store as the decision was my choice alone in which I need not to be convinced,
Although I have purchased this item I am yet to recieve as this unit was the one of the last in the country and is to be shipped in from out of town,
But has given me time to think of such in the process during as this unit is no longer advertised amongst it bigger companions,
I use my mac or mac's mainly for composing music with such software as Pro Tools 8 soon to be 9 and also Live 8 Studio as I don't plan to plan to change over to Lion OSX until these programs are up to speed and speaking the same language,

    Yes, it's compatible with Lion.

    Hi Old Toad,
thanks again for the quick reply!
    Alright, I did the following:
    - I used the user account "guest" and logged into it. Then I opend iPhoto there and worked with it for a while: No problems (although I did´nt work with it for hours, but not one crash!)
That means obviously that the problem is based in my "admin" account somwhere and not a system problem...
    - I downloaded Etrecheck and I did let it run over my system. I posted the result down below...
    - I do not know how to reinstall iPhoto (and only iPhoto) Is there a function "reinstall" or are there downloadable versions? Thanks in advance for clearing that up for me...
    - I don´t think I have thrid party RAM installed: Two times 4GB in the unibody MacBook Pro...
And of course thank you for your continuing help on this matter!
    All the best
    piloTon

  • How to install OSX 10.7 on a reformatted HD Macbook Pro 13?

Is there any way of installing OSX 10.7 or 10.8 on a reformatted hard drive of a macbook pro 13 inch late 2009 that originally came with Leopard (OSX 10.5). I have just bought a macbook pro i5 and once all the data was transferred to the newer macbook I reformatted the hard drive of the old MBP in the xpectation that I could simply reinstall Lion. The recovery disc starts up ok, but curiously the installer points to mountain lion only and I keep getting a dialogue box informing me that my apple Id has not previously bought Lion (not Mountainlion, Lion). For starters that is untrue, I bought Lion on the app store to upgrade from Snowleopard to Lion on the original macbook and that shows up in the previous purchases screen in the App store application. Annoyingly this whole process does not allow me to re-purchase Lion on the old macbook pro and I am also now unable to restore the system from Timemachine as this now appears to be associated with the newer machine. And yes, you guessed it, I no longer have the original installation CDs, not realizing that I would still need these after upgrading the operating system (twice).
Attempts to start up from the only disc that I do have (snowleopard) results in hopeful crunching of the optical drive followed by a grey screen descending across the monitor followed by the message that I must restart the computer and then this process starts again, so getting nowhere and frustration mounting.
I am now left with a machine that is clinically dead with otherwise perfectly functioning hardware
I would be most grateful for any advice.
    Thanks

Purchase the white Snow Leopard 10.6.3 disks Apple sells on their online store.
Follow these directions, you need to zero erase the ENTIRE drive of the older Mac. (important!)
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
If you don't, the 10.8 RecoveryHD partition will remain and the 10.6 install disk can't repair the 10.8 drive later if there is a issue. There likely also will be a problem installing Lion, as the Recovery HD will be 10.8.
If you install Lion, it will create it's own Recovery HD for it.
Once your up, Software Update until 10.6.8, then you can log into AppStore and install Lion if you have already purchased it, or call Apple and special order it, because AppStore goes to 10.8 from 10.6.8 supposedly now.
You then can reinstall iLife from the 10.5 disks by running the installer or using Paficist from Charlessoft.
Just to let you know, you cannot sell the machine with 10.7 or 10.8 on it because the next owner needs your AppleID to reinstall or update the OS. 10.7 or 10.8.
So if your selling it, just install 10.6.3 and press the power button down, it will reboot to the Welcome Video for the next owner.

  • Kernel_task running above 500% CPU load on my Macbook Pro running OSX 10.9.4

I recently upgrade my Macbook Pro to OSX 9.0.4 and the system is running sluggishly slow, Activity Monitor showing kernel_task always running above 500% CPU load, system fan always running loud at startup but laptop is not overheating.  Below is the EtreCheck report, hoping if anyone can help me fix this issue, much appreciate it.  Btw, I have done the SMC reset, but nothing has helped.

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
    ☞ high ambient temperature
    ☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board. If it happens only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That may be normal on some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

    Hi, you need 10.6.8 first...
First you need to research all the problems people are having with the higher OSX versions, & make sure you have a bootable clone of what you have just in case.
then you must get 10.6, install it & update to 10.6.8 so you have the App Store to buy & download the huge 10.8 Installer.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

If one owns an early Intel Mac say 2009 and want to have OSX Lion and or Snow Leopard on a partitioned HD.My setup is typical I use my Bundled DVD and clean format HD ,intall Snow Leopard ,update all and then go to App store download Lion and then you chose your set up .
Most would upgrade to lion by installing on top of snow leapard.
I chose to install lion alone on a partition.
Today I was talking to Apple about an issue with accessing repair and disk permissions on an encrypted volume in Lion recovery Disk Utilities usually greyed out because one must turn off File Vault then go to Lion Recovery Disk Utilities by Start up ,press options the 2 partitioned volumes 1 Lion 2 Snow Leopard 3rd volume  Lion recovery Disk Utilities.
,If File Vault is on it will not be there but when one selects volume 1 Lion and Command and R  Lion recovery Disk Utilities appears but Lion Volumeo Recovery Disk Utilities will be greyed out you go tho unmount and it will prompt you for a Lion Password.
While doing this and repairing I encounted a Storage can not be repaired Error in red, Apple told me that  Lion Recovery Disk Utilities related issues are not supported if one has Snow Leoopard and Lion on a partitoned HD.
So one must upgrade on top of SnowLeaopard or use the Snow Leopard Bundled DVD to erase the volume 2 SnowLeopard ,then all will be well !
So what happens with Mountain Lion when using Snow Leopard Macs ?
Again Disclaimer : I am not an expert and my experience with Computers is trial and catastrophic errors.

    Doesn't slow anything.
But what does that have to do with this 2 year old thread?

  • Upgrade to osx snow leopard from 10.4.11

I have heard that upgrading from 10.4.11 to snow leopard can be done, without the purchasing the useless 'box set', but my question is if i upgrade my os will i lose or keep all my programs, applications, documents and- most important- my music ??? also could someone please confirm that all i need to upgrade is the £25 osx snow leopard disk from apple ... cheers now ryan.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Ryan.
Yes, you are correct about the the £25 upgrade DVD.
No, you should not lose anything. But a good backup is always recommended, I prefer SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.
EDIT: If you want to check compatibility of your apps...
