OSX 10.4 won't boot-HELP!

Installed 10.4 family pack on G4/400 Sawtooth running 10.3.9 perfectly. Would not boot after install restarted. Gray screen, spinner, and "Ban The..." symbol (Circle and bar} replace Apple logo. Was able to restart via button. Upgraded to 10.4.5 etc. and operated normally last night.
This morning, again will not boot, cannot restart, gray screen, spinner, and circle/bar.
Any ideas? Second drive does have OS 9.2 for running Clssic apps.
G$ Mac OS X (10.4.5)

The first thing you should do is get an external firewire hard drive that is empty and run Prosoft Data Rescue on the internal drive to recover as much information as possible. Next after that you could try an Archive and Install, or get Alsoft Disk Warrior 3.0.3 to see if it can fix your problem. Note when Archive and Installing an older operating system over a newer one, do not open any applications until you have brought the operating system back to the version it was at with the combo updaters. I've made a link to all the combo updaters here:

  • Mac Mini, OSX Leopard Server: Won't Boot

I have a Mac Mini Server that 's been stable and connected to my home network wirelessly.
But the signal strength has been so-so.
So I added an Airport Express Modem in my system and installed the adminstrative CD that came with it.
The Mini saw everything and set up the Airport Express fine and it worked great...for about 3 minutes.
I was checking  the speed when it became non-responsive. I shut it down and tried rebooting, and the loading ball spun and spun and spun and did nothing.
I tried rebootijng from a regular OSX Disk and it was non-responsive.
I got it into diagfnostic mode, got a diagnostic screen showing me everything was working, but it still only shows a spinning ball forever and won;t boot.
Using an external DVD, tried using the administrative disk, but I also couldn;t get into it.
No matter what I've tried, the "loading ball" spins and spins and spins...and won't actually load anything.
Ideas, suggestions? I HATE to hit the genius's this time of year..IT'll take FOREVER!!!

Smells of a low-level hardware failure.
I'd usually suggest ordering a spare Mac Mini Server, and rolling in your backup, but Leopard is a very long time ago and jumping to Lion is going to be involved.  Which leaves you to scrounge something old enough to run Leopard or Snow Leopard, and moving to that.
Or you get to brave the local Apple store, yes.
If you don't have good backups of your disk, stop working with the server Right Now, as - if this is a disk-level error - further activity on a failing device tends to reduce the likelihood of eventually recovering the data.

  • MBP crash during 10.4.11 update, KERNEL PANIC, WON'T BOOT, HELP.

Attempted update to 10.4.11 via Software Update. Machine crashed (screen went black, nothing made the machine responsive). Forced power down, powered back up, "need to restart computer". Great.
Disk Warrior rebuild, permissions repair, restart, KERNEL PANIC. Boot from OSX install disc and am greeted with "unable to install software on this computer" giving two options to restart or select startup disk. No matter, ran disk utility, repaired disk, repaired permissions, restart via Macintosh HD, KERNEL PANIC!!!!!!!!!!! UGH.
Now what?? I can use target disk mode to backup contents of computer to another but I really don't want to go to the extent of reinstalling OSX and reloading my data to the machine from the backup. Any ideas? Need to figure this out before tomorrow, any help is appreciated.

Assuming this doesn't resolve the issue, what's the procedure for reinstalling OSX AND keeping my data intact? Can backup everything using target disk mode, just don't know how to re-load it once reinstalled.
Or even if there's a way to reinstall OSX without having to backup the data and re-load it. Thanks

  • Macbook Pro on 10.6.8 won't boot, Help!

I have a 2007 Macbook Pro 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo with 4 gigs of Ram that was running just fine until I left for a weekend away.  When I got home and tried to boot it up it gave me the "universal stop sign" circle with line thru it and wouldn't boot past that screen.  I had problems with the Ram going bad before so I tried putting the stock Ram in it but nothing different happened.  I tried rebooting my pram and also booting in safe mode, none of which worked.  I had a disk of 10.6.3 and am able to boot from that.  I went to disk utility from the DVD which when I tried to verify it it said that I had an issue that needed to be repaired.  I ran the repairs and while it said it fixed them when I verify it again it still says that It needs to be repaired.  So basically i've come to the conclusion that I either need to erase my harddrive and reinstall or maybe someone from this forum can help.
If I need to reinstall I guess thats what i'll have to do but my questions are as follows:
    1.  Since I have the DVD of  10.6.3 do I need to do a fresh reinstall of that and then do all the system updates to get me back to 10.6.8 BEFORE I do my Time Machine restore?  Or can I restore from Time Machine when its still at 10.6.3?
    2.  If I restore from Timemachine will it also restore all my Apps?  Or do I need to reinstall them from my disks and the things I purchased from the internet? (I hope not!!)
    3.  I noticed an option when I booted from 10.6.3 DVD that you can restore from a Time machine backup... will that fix the issues that my computer is having with trying to boot up or not?  If I try this option and it doesn't work is that going to mess up my Time Machine backup or will it not effect that?
Sorry for all the questions but I hope someone can enlighten me on these issues.  Thanks

Just to add a little more info to the story I had upgraded my Hard drive from a 5400 RPM 250gig model that came with the computer to one that was made by Seagate and installed in 2011, 7200 RPM 750 gigs.  Is it normal to fail after not even 2 years?
When I try to repair the Disk using Disk Repair I get the Error Message "Invalid content in Journal."  Can anyone enlighten me to what this means?  Trying to repair the disk does not resolve this issue.
Also trying to start in single user mode and run fsck failed and I got a bunch of error messages that ran on a continuous loop.

  • My iMac won't boot - help!

    I have a PowerPC iMac G5.
It froze up with the fan running high and I did a hard restart.
After that it would stop booting on the blue screen following the grey apple.
I followed the many suggestions on these boards and in knowledge base including:
    -reset PRAM
-reset login and windowserver after command +s startup
-tried safe mode - it won't start in it
-ran fsck after command +s startup (says it can't fix after 3 attempts)
-tried to reinstall with original disk, but it freezes when it gets to "preparing the disk"
-ran disk utility off the menu in installation CD boot, repair permissions worked, repair disk returned an error that it could not repair because "underlying task report, failure on exit"
-I can start up as a target drive and gain firewire access from by MacBook, all hard drive files appear to be fine
-tried safe mode again, again it gets to "starting Mac OS X. . ." and just sits there
What is the "underlying task report"? What can I do to fix it?
Is saving my essential files to my MacBook via firewire and then completely erasing the hard drive and performing a re-install of Tiger do me any good?
    iMac G5 & MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Is saving my essential files to my MacBook via firewire and then completely erasing the hard drive and performing a re-install of Tiger do me any good?
Welcome to Discussions SNW - it's a good idea to do just that, if the reinstall goes well, then you know it was not a failed HD, but probably a couple of bad sectors which the reinstall will take care of. If it doesn't work, then you probably need a new HD, they are relatively inexpensive and easy to install (as long as you don't have an iMac).
    Please post back,

  • MacBook osx 10.6 won't boot and has DVD stuck in drive

I have an older MacBook running osx 10.6 and it recently became unable to boot up.  It gets stuck on a gray screen with a dark gray apple logo, a spinning icon and a progress bar which goes all the way up and disappears.
I have tried the following from this page: Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
-safe boot verbose, it gets partway through and then black screens
-resetting NVRAM / PRAM, it seems to just be trying to boot and persists in the problem.
It has a DVD in the drive and I cannot eject it any way I try, there is no pinhole to force eject and the eject arrow or left mouse key don't do a thing, and as I can't boot into safe mode or any other way I don't know how to eject it, and because the DVD is in there I can't reinstall the OS.
Any ideas?  I do have an external USB dvd reader I could try attaching to it to install the OS anew but not sure that would work...
    thanks
    Tamar

OS X- Gray progress bar appears under Apple logo during startup
    If you need to reinstall:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Dual 2.0GHZ won't boot, help?

I have a Power Mac G5 Dual 2GHZ, I believe the first late 2004 model. It had 3.5GB's of RAM and an older model Apple Cinema display.
The problem is, is it just wont boot up. I turn the power on, the screen remains blank and the light flashes on the computer 3 times. I consulted the manual and it says that if the light flashes 3 times, the RAM is incompatible. However I took out all 8 sticks of RAM and tried each pair for a boot, but none of the pairs would but and I received the same 3 flashes. I should also add I tried resetting the PMU and it didn't solve the issue. It doesn't boot so resetting the PRAM also is a no go.
Everything powers on properly, so I'm don't think its the PSU, unless you know different. I'm not sure if all my RAM has died, if its the Power Supply or Perhaps the logical board has failed? Or maybe something else?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Any idea what might be charged to have someone to replace motherboard?
I'm having the above problems starting shortly after I installed Leopard. The Mac is unusable now and in the shop. I became concerned though after the Apple authorized Tech guy gave my machine a 20 minute lookover and didn't have a clue. Talk of motherboards and power supplies came up. I know both are expensive not counting labor.
I bought a used 2.7 ghz. G5 this morning. Maybe it's premature but at least I get a better machine that will be working, here in a few days.
I'm out cash but I struggled for days trying to figure my Macs problems out. The nightmare is over. For now...

  • My PowerBook Won't Boot---Help

    hey
I had this problem for more then a year then 2 days ago I was able to start it in safe mood witch I never tried before. I was planning on not turning it off but it got stuck. Now it sometimes dose not even show the small loading fan under the apple or takes a long time to show or does not show the apple at all and only a while screen or it turns white after the apple sits there for a while. I rested the PRAM(my sound was not working), But nothing. I don’t have the CD that erase or restores the computer they both broke a while ago. Any info or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    please reply thanks you

If you contact Apple support, they will sell you a new set of CDs for your system, for maybe $50?. They would be handy, for example, to run the Apple hardware test, which might provide some indication of what's causing your problem, if it's hardware-related.
If you haven't already, you might read this Apple article on steps to take for a system that won't start up: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50959

  • K8T Neo-V 2.0 (MS-7144) won't boot - help diagnosing plz

Well, here is the case. I just bought a K8T Neo-V 2.0 (MS-7144) with a Sempron 2800+ Palermo. When I power on I it just starts beeping long beeps endlessly. Fans are all working, but no signal on the monitor. Tried with 2 different agp cards and 1 pci card, and 2 different blocks of PC3200 memory. Whatever the combination same result. The PSU is a 350W with 13A on the 12V. The manual says that only Sempron 3100+ is supported but MSIs website states that all Sempron should be able to run. In fact I have seen bundles being sold with this exact combination. Anybody knows anything about what could be the problem?

    Quote from: el_toro on 09-February-07, 16:01:10
I guess I will try the setup with another PSU then, to see if that solves the problem. What amperage am I looking for? A minimum of 20A on the 12V rail?
depend of your hardware configuration. look to be a single rail with high amperes on +12V.

  • In OSX now won't boot back to OS9 Help!

Hi Folks! I've done this before but it's been a while and I've forgotten how to resolve the problem. I usually use OS9 on this computer but i booted into X and then used classic and now it won't boot back to OS9. You can select the OS9 drive in the startup panel but it just boots back to X. Using an option boot the OS9 drive doesn't show up. The only thing I did was startup classic using the system folder on that separate OS9 drive. Why would starting up classic render a perfectly good boot drive inoperable. I ran Diskwarrior on it to make sure the directory was in good shape. The OSX is one one drive and the OS9 is on another. Tom

    Hi Tom-
Do you need to rebless the system folder?

  • Hi guys I'm really in need of some help. I have an IMac I3 for a while now I've been having a problem of my machine refusing it shut down , it goes to a blue screen with a spinning wheel but doesn't shut down.  And now won't boot from install DvD

Please some one help me ...
    A) my mac won't shut down with external HD connected (if it's been used)
    B) there are disk permissions that can't be fixed SUID stuff ..
    C) I have now verified the Mac HD and it tells me it's corrupt in bold red writing and to start up from install DVD
    D) it won't boot from DVD so I cannot run the repair , initially the machine was spitting it out on start up , now it appears to be attempting to boot off DVD , well it sounds like it is .... BUT it's hanging with the Mac Logo and a wheel ... For um .... 30min now...
    E) weirdly when OSX is booted off the hard drive , it won't recognise the Install DvD or the applications one... It just spits them out....
I had an old PPC 17" and it was a beaut .... Never had a single problem with it ...
I bought this one December 2010 and it's been nothing but issues for a computer in excess of £1000 I'm extremely disappointed ... And weirdly the shutting down issue started when it was a week out of warrantee ... I feel conned and am almost at the point of throwing it at a wall and buying a PC

Ok so I've done what you said and this is what it's come back ....
I don't know that these are the errors , but they're the things which don't look right ...
    Throughout the shut down there is a recurring line ;
    It says ;
    Com.apple.launchd 1 0x100600e70.anonymous.unmount 301 PID still valid
    Then there are 2 more which I think are related ;
Com.apple.securityd 29 PID job has I overstayed its welcome , forcing removal.
Then the same with fseventd 48 and diskarbitrationd 13
Oh and on Launchd1 : System : stray anonymous job at shut down : PID 301 PPID13 PGID 13 unmount...
Then the last process says "about to call: reboot (RB_AUTOBOOT).
    Continuing...
    And stops ...
Hope this means something to you ... Thanks again for your help so far :-)

  • Hard Drive failure - various boot modes won't work, HELP!

    Hello all,
First of all, sorry for the essay, but I didn't want to miss out on possible crucial details that could help!
A couple of weeks ago, my beloved 27" iMac had a hard drive failure. It won't boot, but instead goes to the grey 'no entry' sign when booting up. I tried holding Cmd + V on boot and this message repeated itself whilst failing to boot:
    "rooting via boot-uuid from chosen/: D94DA2D5-DB38-3517-B05D-70A97AC6EE5B
    Waiting on <dict ID="0"><key><IOProviderClass</key><string ID="1"> IOResorces</string><key>IOResourceMach</key><string ID= "2">boot-uuid-media</string></dict>
    Got boot device = IOService:/AppleACPlatformExpert/PCI0@0/AppleACPIPCI/SATA@1F,2/AppleIntel5Serie sAHCI/PRT0@0/IOAHCIDiskDriver/IOAHCBlockStorageDevice/IOBLockStorageDriver/Hitac hi HDS722020ALA330 Media/IOGUIDPartitionScheme
    BSD root: disk0s2, major 14, minor 2
jnl: unknown-dev: open: phys_blksz 4096 does not match journal header size 512, and journal is not empty!
hfs: late jnl init: failed to open/create the journal (retval 0)
cannot mount root, errno = 19"
I'm not sure how much of that is useful, but I thought I'd copy it all down anyway.
I googled error number = 19 and found articles on an invalid b-tree node and corrupt journals, leaving me to believe that because I recently deleted a Windows Vista partition and reformed the overall HD into a 2TB OSX volume, some windows data may have been left over and corrupted the journal?
So it fails to boot normaly, using Cmd V, and using the OSX install disk, as well as failing to boot from the DiskWarrior 4 DVD I purchased from my local Apple Reseller because I'd heard that it's very good at helping with issues such as what I think my HD is having. I tried Disk Utility whilst booting from the install disk, and tried to repair the drive, and each time I tried it said that invalid content was present in the journal but the disk repair had been successful.
Am I right in thinking that my data is on the drive, it's just that OSX won't register the drive's existence because of a corrupted journal? (the little I know of hard drives is shining brightly through at this point, I'm sure!)
I also tried to boot using target mode by connecting my iMac to a MacBook Pro also running Snow Leopard, but, whilst the iMac clearly went into target mode (bouncing firewire icon on screen), my HD never appeared on the desktop of the MacBook Pro, nor in Disk Utility.
Whilst I have AppleCare, I haven't tried taking it to a mac store yet because of two reasons; 1. The last time I did this I had HD failure on my old 2008 MBP and, whilst I told them to keep the data on it, the first thing they did was reformat the disk. Needless to say, it worked, but I lost all my valuable Data! The second reason is that it's bloody heavy, and I don't own a car!
Before people go on about the way I should have backed up my data, I did, and that's gone as well! D:
    System Specs:

OS version: not the very latest snow leopard but the one before.
Thanks in advance, and once again sorry for the essay!

I'm not sure about the DW disk. Check that out at Alsoft's website. Apple doesn't provide data recovery services.
Apple has records of your iTunes purchases. However, the licensing for music only permits you to download it once. I'm surprised that you don't have backups.
If you get an external enclosure in which to put the drive then you might try accessing it from the MBP as an external drive. If you have an external drive you could try using recovery software:
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
Beyond this you would need to send the drive off to a data recovery service which will be extremely expensive.

  • 22" iMac desktop OSX 10.6.6 Snow Leopard and it won't boot. I've tried shift start, option command+P+R. It's stuck at the restart, all I see is the spinning wheel below the apple logo.

I have a 22" iMac desktop running OSX 10.6  Snow Leopard and it won't boot. I've tried shift start, option command P R. It's stuck at the restart, all I see is the spinning wheel below the apple logo. And I lost my OSX DVD is there any way to fix this? I just did a software update yesterday and have about 20GB left on my Hard drive. The last thing I did was try to install some plugin's for Pro Tools 8, but it wouldnt let me install so I restarted and now I'm screwed. Please Help!

You have to consider the possibility the hard drive may be dying.    If your data isn't backed up, try one of the tools below:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
Once you are sure your data is backed up, we can examine other possibilities.  In the meantime call AppleCare for your original installation DVDs.  You may need them.
