OSX 10.5.4 won't startupte

My computer crashed froze last night during normal browsing and won't start up. i've tried the safe startup (holding the shift key down), but nothing happens. The screen is grey with the apple logo and there is the spinning wheel below.
Any suggestion on how to startup?

Interesting. I changed the keyboard to the old one, that did allow resetting the PRAM. it started up with the leopard dvd. I went into the disk utilities, but it won't let me click on the repair HD. i clicked on the verify disk, but that failed also.
any further suggestions on the next steps?
I suspect a bad HD, but don't give up yet. There are two more tools to use.
There is DiskWarrior
http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html
and there is
TechTools
http://www.micromat.com/ (which is free if you have the AppleCare subscription)
There is also another option, more to simply verify if your data are intact:
Download ubuntu, burn it to a CD and boot it, do not install it.
Using Ubuntu (a free Linux-like OS) you can look at your HD if it's possible and see what is there.

IF you HD does not show up with Ubuntu, then either the HD or the logic board is probably kaput.

I took the system file out of the system folder on os 9.2 can't boot to put file back in machine also has osx 10.2 but won't let me boot to either need os 9 compatible boot disk I think?

If the OS X 10.2 on the hard drive is/was bootable, try this -
Restart or boot, then immediately press the X key, keep it held down until you know the machine has started to boot using OS X. This is a hardware instruction to the Mac to boot using the first usable instance of OS X it finds.
Once booted to OS X, you should be able to move OS 9's System file into OS 9's System Folder.
Note - in general, unless you know for sure what you are doing and that the results are desired, do not relocate or rename files in OS 9's System Folder or in OS X's System or Library folders.

  • Tried to install OSX Mavericks now MBP won't load

    Hi all
Last night I tried to install OSX Mavericks on my MBP mid-2010 running Mountain Lion. It downloaded fine and then seemed to install fine. When the message came up saying it was going to restart automatically the spinning wheel hanged, which was the first problem. I switched off the MBP and turned it on again. It now refuses to boot up and stays on the Apple bootup screen with the spinning wheel.
I've tried to restart in recovery mode but this doesn't seem to work. It just goes back to the spinning wheel and there is no progress bar that pops up to indicate the recovery data is being downloaded from the net (I don't have a recovery partition).
I have a backup external hard drive that I can use to restore my MBP and then try upgrading again, but I can't use that until I get into recovery mode.
    Is anyone able to help?
    Thanks

Ok so I worked out how to get into recovery mode. Turns out I was doing it wrong! I used an external USB drive to access recovery mode.
I ran disk utility which identified and fixed some errors on the HD. I thought this might solve the problem but when I restarted the same problem occurred. I then restored my time machine backup which thankfully worked.
I tried installing mavericks again! Upon restarting and completing the install, I got the message 'OSX has been installed. Your computer will now restart'. After the countdown had finished I got the beach ball which span eternally again, just like last time. After about 10 mins I did a hard reset and again OSX won't load.

  • After update to OSX 10.9, Mail won't send attachments

Since upgrading to Mavericks (OSX 10.9), Mail (7.0) won't send email attachments using my employer's MS Exchange account.  All other messages (without attachments) send just fine, and no Exchange server or account settings were changed.  Attachments send just fine via the exchange web application, so it's not an account or mailbox size issue.  The problem happens even with small attachments (I just tried one that was 173 kb).
After I hit send, the activity window says "adding message" for a time, then an error comes up "Cannot send message using the Exhange server" then give me an option to use my gmail or icloud which work fine.
    Any ideas?

I actually was able to solve the issue using some info gleaned from other posts.  I think it had to do with some exchange account settings from a prior version of Mail that were still on my machine and interfering with the new Mail app.  Here's what I did to fix the issue.
Make sure I had a good backup in Time Machine (including system settings) in case something goes wrong
Delete Exchange account using "system preferences > internet accounts"
    Close Mail
    Show hidden files
Terminal command:  defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
    Terminal command:  killall Finder
Using Finder, locate and delete the file:  ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Using Finder, locate and delete the folder(s) and all their contents:  ~/Library/Mail/V2/EWS-(your exchange acct info)I actually had a couple of these "EWS" folders in there from prior times that I had setup my exchange account.  Not sure why ... I just deleted them all.
    Empty the recycle bin
    Reboot the computer
Hide hidden files (not necessary, it's just my preference)
Terminal command:  defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
    Terminal command:  killall Finder
Open "system preferences > internet accounts" and setup Exchange account as if it were the first time.
It took a while for all my mailboxes to rebuild and everything to come in, but after the initial sync, Mail 7.0 now works perfectly with my Exchange account including sending mail with file attachments.  It's actually a lot quicker to receive and send than the prior version of Mail.
It doesn't seem like a widespread problem, but I hope this at least helps you (eprasek) with your issue.  Best of luck!

  • OSX 10.9.5 won't recognize an external hardrive

I got a new Macbook Air running 10.9.5 that simply won't recognize my external hard drive.... I even tried formatting it with another Macbook Pro not running the latest OSX version. And another device (Smart TV) also recognizes the hard drive so I don't think that's the issue. I also opened disc utility to check whether it would be visible but it's not appearing there either...
    Help please!

Thank you so much!!! This worked for me. I went file>new>library. Then I created a new project in that library, went back to the project in the old library that wouldn't export, I highlighted all of the clips in the timeline and hit cmd-c (copy), then headed back to my new project in new library and pasted the clips there. Then when I hit Share Master File it actually worked! The window popped up as usual and I was able to export. Thank-you Thank-you Thank-you!

  • OSX 10.8.5 won't connect to Windows 2008 R2 NFS

    Hi
We have about 25 Mac clients in our Microsoft Windows environment. OSX is bound to our single Active Directory domain and all our Windows server are 2008 R2.
For several years we have been using SMB filesharing and connecting the Mac clients to our Windows file server. Now we are experiencing performance problems and are evaluating NFS file sharing on our file servers. The Mac client won't connect to our Windows NFS server and we have pinpointed the problem to OSX requesting Kerberos token encryption type "des3-hmac-sha1" which is unsupported by Windows.
How can we configure NFS / Kerberos on OSX 10.8.5 to use a different Kerberos encryption type ?
I have tried to update the /etc/krb5.conf file without success. OSX is still asking for the same encryption type.
The file /Library/Preferences/edu.mit.Kerberos does not exist. The my understanding OSX 10.8.5 uses the Heimdal Kerberos implementation.

So Does Maverick Fix this issue?
Im trying to sort out my inlaws wireless printing issues. They have a mac running 10.6.8 works fine wirelessly and USB. They have another mac running 10.8.5 and this mac will not see the printer directly. I can print via mac 1 using a shared connection. But if you deselect mac 1 sharing options then mac 2 cannot see the printer. I can print via usb and via the shared connection using mac 1. But not directly.... So if Bonjour is no good on 10.8.5 does the update to mavericks fix it?
    Thanks

  • OSX 10.8.2 won't allow Mail (v6.2) to open.  Any ideas what to do?

I just ran the latest update to 10.8.2 and now Mail won't open.  I get an error message saying that the version 6.2 I have is not compatible with the 10.8.2 OSX.
Any ideas what to do...I depend on Mail for work!

    Straight away.
Last night I tried to restore the system from the Time Machine to just before the problem and then update the OS again.  This worked fine, although it took a long time to optimize the Mailboxes and even then quite a lot of previously read email was showing as unread.
Anyway, since I've now solved the problem myself with no loss of data I think I should close this thread.
    Thank you for your interest...

  • I recently upgraded to OSX Leopard, now safari won't work at all.

After installing successully the OSX 10.5.6 on two of my HDs, I went to "Software Update" and received 7 updates.  It was late, and I accepted the install, and went to bed.  this morning it [safari] doesen't work any way I can think to use it.
I updated from OSX 10.4.11, and still have that HD it was installed on in the computer.  I also installed two new HDs along with the upgrades.  I am attempting to use the Safari on one of the new HD's, not the one on the older HD.
    I have tried the following:
--downloading [thru firefox] Safari for Leopard and installing successfully
    --perusing these forums
I'm pretty misearble about the whole thing..  any assistance will be appreciated.
    Any ideas?

  • Updated osx and now mail won't load

    Hi all,
I've updated my operating system so that I could go on to upgrade to Lion, but in the interim my mail won't load - its telling me "an error occured while importing.  Make sure you have available space in your home folder and try again"...I can't even locate my "home" folder on my system...
Any ideas how I can fix this?  And will upgrading to Lion without the mail box being fixed perhaps fix it?

Sounds like something went pear-shaped somewhere along the line. I suggest reinstalling like this:
    * Go to [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/fx/?ref=logo Download Firefox 4.0] and download a fresh installation file to the desktop.
    * Then go to Add/Remove Programs, scroll down to Mozilla Firefox and remove it, choosing to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc., (don't checkmark the box).
    * Then reboot and delete the folder called Mozilla Firefox at this location: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    * Finally run the installation file you downloaded.
After you complete the installation, go to the [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ Plugins Check] page and update those if necessary.

  • Security update Flash version for Mac OSX 10.5.8 won't install

I lost my ability to view Ustream live streaming and recorded videos on Sept. 12, 2013, in both Safari and Firefox. The screen is solid black, and if I right click I get "Movie not loaded..." I read about the Sept.10 Security Update for Flash Player, so I uninstalled version fp_10.3.183.90 and attempted to install version fp_11.7.700.242. The installation failed every time, so I returned to the older one. On Sept. 13 I downloaded Google Chrome and it worked, but today, Sept. 14, I see the message "Flash is out of date," and no video.
I have a Macmini2,1 with 1 Intel Processor and 2 Cores, made in 2007, I think. OS Leopard, 10.5.8 (64-bit). My Safari is version 5.0.6, Firefox 9.0.1 and Chrome 21.0.1180.90.
I spend a lot of time on Ustream, so this is a big setback... please help!

Firefox is on version 23.1 now (I believe it WILL run on Leopard), and Chrome is on 29 (I can't be sure of that because I've uninstalled it from EVERY LAST machine I own and will NEVER use it again).
THAT may have something to do with it. Safari 5 is the newest that will run on 10.5, and unfortunately the LATEST Flash Player WON'T run on Leopard.
The reason is that OS 10.5 was the LAST Universal Binary OS Mac released (it runs on Intel or Power PC Macs) Becaue of that, it uses a different acrhitecture and the Flash Player is different from an "Intel only" build. Websites will continue to update, requiring the latest Player, and that will lead to obsolescence of your Flash Player (and your OS). THAT'S the bad news.
The GOOD news is: Because your Mac is Intel powered, you can upgrade to Snow Leopard (OS 10.6.8) for $20 through Apple (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard), and THAT will allow you to run a LOAD of software that requires 10.6 or newer.
