OSX 10.5.6 Update -- Strange

Strange problem with this MacBook pro with every update I've done....
Works absolutely great with speed and stability improvements...
W000000000000T. Love my MBP. Can we get some apple love in the house?

On this forum you see people bashed for not repairing the disc, fixing permissions, having a clone etc etc. They cop soooo much from the upper level users and are being told that all problems are their fault.
Sadly that is sometimes the case.
Now, I am going to raise a question...
Considering that ALL the maintenance must be done before an upgrade, and the combo should be used, why does an automatic update not take all that into consideration?
Each system is different?
Let me enlarge. Things like System Preferences repairs could be done, of course, but that would add time and complexity. However, there are a number of other considerations, IMO. First, any system will generate its own problems during a period of use and therefore a system should be maintained by the owner. Forced shutdowns, incomplete downloads, crashed applications (does happen) all add to a less than perfect situation. I do not think we can presume that any OS is designed to be self-repairing, so over a period of time, there is likely to be a deterioration.
That is probably one of the reasons that Apple provides Disk Utility and it is recommended that this is run in the event of any problems; as is the permissions repair. One also finds that Apple warns in the rubric of Disk Utility, that if it is unable to fix a problem, a stronger utility may be needed. Stuff happens and regular maintenance is one of the keys to keeping it all ship shape (and Bristol fashion, to complete the saying).
There is also the question of periodic maintenance that is carried out when the machine is left on and running 24/7. I don't do that. Nor do many. So that has to be covered in another way: several utilities do this. I use Macaroni on one computer and run periodic in Terminal on another. Again, failure to run these tasks may not be a disaster but won't help in the general run.
After all, many people switch to MAC because "it works right out of the box", it's extremely user friendly and all that spiel.
Which it is: but some users do start off on the wrong foot. I have helped a number who have some really weird installations and setups.
Then, they see a box saying: new updates are available, happily they hit the YES PLEASE button, and if anything goes wrong they are being put down as "illiterate" users...
Agree
Should all users be expected to read through articles on the KB after they switched to avoid all that mucking about?
No. Some phone me late night after it has gone wrong. And I am no expert.
Shouldn't the Automatic Update run ALL the maintenance tasks automatically before updating the OS? I think so.
What do you think?
Food for thought, indeed. But as I suggest above: too many variables for a vanilla upgrade method that fixes and repairs all. Imagine if a disk did have a problem and the standard maintenance failed to install, or it crashed because of the problem? Surely more angst that way.
You certainly make some interesting points: food for thought.

  • Keyboard not responding after OSX 10.7.4 update

I have just installed the OSX 10.7.4 update.
About 12 hours after installation the screen dimmed with a message that I need to restart the computer. I did so and now after startup I get a message on the screen that the Bluetooth keyboard can't be found. I actually have a hard wired keyboard, not a Bluetooth one, but there is no response to keys on the keyboard and I can't get rid of the screen message, even after a restart.
So I can't start in safe mode or anything like that because the keyboard doesn't work. Any ideas on how to get around this?

Thanks for the suggestions, but the keyboard was connected to a built-in port.
When I came back to the computer about an hour after the problem appeared, the bluetooth message had gone and the normal keyboard was working again, so I could log in. I checked Bluetooth in System Preferences and found there was a "phantom" wireless keyboard listed, that I had never installed. I removed that from the list so hopefully the problem won't re-occur.
Not sure whether this problem was related to the update, but from other posts, it appears to have caused a number of issues.

  • OSX 10.4.6 Update General Comment

    All,
It's obvious that something is wrong with the OSX 10.4.6 update via software update on a number of computers. There are numerous cries for help here all posted in the past couple of days. My Quicksilver crashed, my laptop has not. I appreciate the time and effort of all the responders and hopefully I'll be able to resolve my Quicksilver's gray screen and spinning icon problem on startup when I get my Tiger Family Pack disks.
Something important needs to be communicated to Apple. Many of the experts have said users need to do this or that thing before or after an update, as if it is our fault as consumers of Apple's products that we don't have arcane knowledge. I bought my first Apple in 1985 precisely because I did not want to have to know insider tricks to achieve functionality. I want to write, design, create - not be a system administrator.
If the suggestions being offered are so critical to avoiding crashes and system freezes and the penalty could be total loss of data, then Apple needs to engineer these precautionary steps directly into the update. We should be prompted and led through the necessary steps - or preferably they should be automated right into the software update/installation process.
It's great to be so knowledgeable you can help, but sometimes we should step back and question the big picture. The big picture here is that Apple is remiss in designing a system that is subject to corruption during updates. If there are things we must avoid doing during an update these things can, should, and must be addressed by Apple prior to and as part of the update process.

I can only reply with a real world example. My son (23) runs a G4 Dual 450. He never uses disk utility, never repairs permissions, never performs any kind of system maintenance. The machine is on 24/7. He accepts whatever the Software Update panel offers whenever it offers it. And yet he has no problems. He updated to 10.4.6 when it first appeared in Software Update and is running like a champ. He has god-only-knows how many third party gizmos installed too.
I, on the other hand, am almost obsessive-compulsive about system maintenance, running TechTool Pro once a week, disk utility once per week, repair permissions, etc. I have never had any problems with Panther or Tiger in almost two years now.
I can't explain why some have problems while others don't. At work most everyone else is a Windows user and the same things happen. While some are always talking about how this-or-that happened and hosed their computer others say that they never have any problems and that Windows XP is rock solid for them.
The plain reality is that this technology is stupendously, mind-bendingly complicated. Computer makers have been trying for over thirty years now to make them bullet-proof devices like turning on a radio. It ain't happened yet and I don't think it ever will. In my opinion Apple has come the closest to doing it but as long as people keep clamoring for more features and less cost the technology will continue to get even more complicated. Personal computers will never be like toasters. They will always require a fairly high level of knowledge and experience to operate and maintain until the day comes when the device on your desktop is simply a terminal and everything is handled by an online system somewhere that is run by professionals. That day is coming sooner than anyone thinks too.

My MacBook Pro Early 2011 is stuck on the Mac OSX 1.7.2 update.
I ordered Lion OSX from App Store about 2/3 months ago.
    It says:
    Software Update
    Installing 3 items
    Progress Bar
This may take a few minutes; do not shut down your computer.
And it has been going about 45min. on the same screen.
And i don't have a Time Machine recovery and don't want to lose my data.
    PLEASE HELP!!!

    I have solved my problem!
I just shut it down with the power button.
Waited 10 minutes (i kept trying before but did not start up).
I started it then it restarted about 4 times then it started up with all my data.

  • OSX 10.5.8 update - serious networking issue

I have noticed a serious issue which has started happening AFTER I installed the OSX 10.5.8 update (from the combo file).
I have a cable modem and 2 computers (a MacPro and a PC) connected via an Airport Extreme router. Over the last week my ethernet network on the Mac side disconnects (no IP found) and my internet disappears. The internet connectivity is fine on the PC so it has to be related to an issue on the Mac.
I can resolve this problem by disconnecting and reconnecting the Airport Extreme to the power.
    Has anybody else seen this??
    Peter

I have a similar issue. I lost the ability to connect to my PC. Worked fine, then just disappeared. Internet works fine but but the ability to connect to the PC to move files is gone??? Triple checked everything. Totally lost!

  • After osx 10.8.5 update the bluethooth is no longer available

After osx 10.8.5 update the bluethooth is no longer available. It is shown that no Bluetooth is installed it. In front of the update everything worked faultlessly on my iMac late 2009.

Try shutting down your Mac and then unplugging it (completely) for about 30 seconds.  Then plug it in and power it back up.
This does what's called an "SMC reset" and will often resolve issues around AirPort and Bluetooth hardware of this nature.

    Alex,
did you just upgrade from an Aperture 3.2.x version to Aperture 3.3.1? This error message usually occures after the upgrade to 3.3.1, when Aperture cannont convert the library format to 3.3. format.
I'd try to repair the Aperture Library (Mediathek), before upgrading it. Hold down the option-command key combination (⌥⌘) while double-clicking Aperture. This will bring the "Aperture Library First Aid Tools" panel forward. Select "Rebuild Database" and see, if it will resolve the the problem.
    Good luck

  • Why are images on page blinking after the OSX 10.9.3 update

Why are images on page blinking after OSX 10.9.3 update on 5/21/14?

I have finally been able to get the strobe effect stopped.  I've restarted at least 7 times and each time I got the light grey screen with the darker grey apple and the spinning wheel, but not the log in box I used to get before the 5/21/14 update.  But I called my son and he did some research and told me to hold down the Shift key and type in my password, even if it didn't appear in the log in box.  It worked and the log in box appeared and I was able to type in my password.  After doing this for each of the 7 times, on my last attempt it appears the strobe effect has been weeded out.  Thank God - I thought I was going blind with it affecting every screen I was on.
I hope this will be of help to someone.

Chances are you either did not install or correctly or added the incorrect RAM.

  • Which version of QT 7 was/is included in the OSX 10.4.6 update

I have had 10.4.2 & QT 7.0 installed on my iMac G5 for nearly 18 months and have not had any problems whatsoever until one of my apps crashed my system over the weekend. I've done enough diagnostics to conclude that it will be simplest / easiest / fastest for me to wipe the HD and reinstall from scratch.
While I could just reimage my HD from the backup image I made when I originally installed my system (10.4.2 + QT 7.0), I'm considering updating beyond that, probably to 10.4.6
I've searched Apple downloads and previous versions of QuickTime don't appear to be available anymore - only QT 7.1.5. and 7.1.6. But I am reluctant to install QT 7.1.5 or 7.1.6 based on problems I've seen here and in the Final Cut Express forum.
Anyone know which version of QT 7 was packaged in the OSX 10.4.6 update?

Updates don't necessarily improve things and the point updates often create as many problems as they solve. The combination of 10.4.2 and QT 7.0 has been rock solid and problem free for me.
I only update under controlled circumstances because I value system stability very highly. I have worked with and supported thousands of systems over the years and I can guarantee that the wanton application of updates is the #1 cause of problems.
The software crash I mentioned happened while iDVD5 was reconnecting media in a project that had been moved to a different hard drive. It corrupted something in QuickTime as well as the disk catalog on one of my backup drives. I don't believe it's a repairable problem and decided to reinstall the system. For me, that opened the question of whether or not to reinstall my existing disk image or build a new one from scratch.
OSX 10.4.9 has created major headaches for users of Final Cut Express and the QuickTime forum is full of problems associated with 7.1.5 & 7.1.6.
I am looking for recommendations on specific releases of QT (in this forum) and OSX that users have found to be especially solid.

  • Issue with the recent MAC OSX 10.7.5 update

The recent MAC OSX 10.7.5 update rendered my WD external backup disk unusable. The iMAC only recognizes it as read-only now despite having 2 TB of available space. It doesn't even show on my desktop anymore.  I have tried disk repair but it couldn't be repaired. Any suggestions?

Copy these commands into TextEdit, replace the bracketed part with your username and the quoted parts with the ext HD's name, retaining the quotes.
sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/"name of ext HD"
sudo chmod a+rx /Volumes/"name of ext HD"
    sudo chown -R <your username w/o brackets>:admin /Volumes/"name of ext HD"
Launch the Terminal app in /Applications/Utilities, copy and paste the first one into the window that pops up, and hit the return key. When the Password: prompt pops up, carefully type in your admin password, since nothing shows on the screen, and hit the return key. Copy & paste the other two, one at a time, following each with hitting the return key. You won't get the password prompt, since the initial one's good for five minutes.
Quit the Terminal app and you should be able to read and write to the ext HD. This assumes there's no OS or Time Machine backup on the HD. If there is, don't run the third command.

How can I update QuickTime and Java then without upgarding? I wish to keep a back channel to OS9

Mac OS X Tiger was discontinued years ago, and if Software Update doesn't detect any new update, it's because you are running the latest Java and QuickTime version for Tiger.
Apart from that, I see that you have a G5, so the most recent Mac OS X version you can use is Mac OS X Leopard, another version that it's (or it's going to be) discontinued soon. PowerPC support is completely dead now, and if you want the most recent QuickTime and Java versions, you will need a Intel-based Mac with OS X Lion or Mountain Lion, that have got the latest Java 6 versions and they are compatible with Java 7
