OSX 10.5.8  Gimp & X11

I am having a problem getting both X11 and Gimp to Install and run. I have found solutions that
apply to OSX 10.5.2 but not 10.5.8. Would appreciate any suggestions as to solutions, as well ***
what version of gimp will work with what version of X11 on this machine.
Thanks in advance for your help

I am an XPlane nut. I am trying to convert older aircraft paint files, primarily bmp and png to tne
latest version of XPlane 9.64. Photoshop would be ideal, google sketch up, would do the job but I cannot get it to work as I am on a PPC. I have used Gimp in the past with some success.
Open source is the choice because I cannot afford photoshop. fixed income senior lol. Seashore is
a good alternative to Gimp but has limited function. This is only part of the problem. X11 is the other part.
X11 in it's current for does not launch. From OSX install disc OSX 10.5.0. On another part of the forum it was noted that X11 has to be updated via an Apple Combo 10.5.2 update. I have not done this yet.
I have bothe Gimp 2.47 dmg and 2.6.11 dmg. Both are PPC versions both will install, but not launch.
The problem is with X11
Before I downloadand install the combo update, I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions. Hence my posting.

• I downloaded gimp+x11 and message says can't uninstall -help please

I downloaded gimp with X11 and want to uninstall it but an icon of a hard drive is in my sidebar under my mac hard drive icon  with  gimp X11 on it   and when I tried to drag it to the trash, a message popped up saying "can't = put it in trash because gimp cannot be uninstalled" . Please help me. I have an older version of adobe creative suite but wanted a simpler paint program to merge art and photos. I desperately want to uninstall gimp because it is not even as good as Tuxpaint which my granddaughter uses at school and which I realized has options of photo merging also and seems like a better designed program even if it is for kids. The only problem with Tuxpaint is enlarging its canvas or workspace window and I haven't yet found how to export it's images but my granddaughter loves it and will flip when she realizes she can load photos from her digital camera, I hope. My main problem though is getting rid of gimp.  Thank you for your help.

It sounds like you have a disk image mounted. If that's so, unmount it by clicking the eject icon that appears when you mouse over it in the Finder sidebar, then move the image file (something like "Gimp.dmg") to the Trash.

• GIMP / X11 worked fine until today

I'm using GIMP with X11 and it works fine for me.
Today I tried to start (as usual) it but it freezes with the splash screen. The splash screen isn't even visible just a white rectangle.
I uninstalled GIMP and installed a fresh copy of it - no change. I rebootet - no change. I turned off the Mac - no change.
Could the Mac OS X update to 10.4.4 be the problem? I didn't start GIMP for a while...
Or should I reinstall X11?
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   iPod 20 GB (4th gen.)

Just found this site:
http://episteme.arstechnica.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/8300945231/m/502000627731
Looks like the font cache needs to be rebuilt. From that article:
"Try running sudo fc-cache -f -v from the Terminal. It will rebuild the fontconfig indexes. WorkedForMe(tm)."
I tried it. It looked like it was possibly doing something but I couldn't tell if it actually wanted input from me. I CTRL-C'd it and then just opened Gimp again and hid it (COMMAND+H on X11) with that white screen. After a few minutes the normal Gimp windows popped up and I was back in action. It really does look like it was rebuilding the Font Cache.
Inkscape now also works, too.

• X11 - where is it? ...and how do i get rid of it?

hello there!
yesterday something rode me to install openoffice. when i wanted to start it i got the message that apple x11 is needed (ok, i know you knew that)...
...so i took my apple cd and installed that x11 thing. but openoffice still did tell me to install x11! the osx help told me that x11 will be in the utilities folder - but it isn't. this encouraged me to install most of that developer tool stuff or however that is called from my apple cd - and yeah, no open office but about 2gb less space on my hdd and no x11. via spotlight i found some x11 package on my hdd which i then tried to install but it stopped during installation with the message that some error occured...
ok, my questions are:
how will i get rid of my stupid a$$ installation of that developer stuff?
...and how will i install x11?
thanks a lot in advance guys........

x11 needs to be installed from the OS X install cd that shipped with your mbp (its burried in one of the folders, don't remember which off hand - sorry).
as for removing developer tools... personally, i wouldn't. if you ever plan on installing stuff from source via fink or darwinports or want to install apache/php for some reason, you'll need the developer tools. they do come in very hand, but if you are so incline to remove them, open up a terminal window (/Applications/Utilities) and issue the command
sudo /Developer/Tools/uninstall-devtools.pl
that should prompt you for your password. Just walk through it and it'll clear them out.
If you really want to use open office on os x, i'd highly suggest neooffice

• Printing issue in Classic

Hello,
I have in the past (if I remember right) installed a Gimp driver to print with an Epson C86 printer in Classic Os9. Since the driver supplied from Epson are only available for OSX, I used the Gimp driver and it worked perfectly to print in OS9.
I now had to replace the disposable- (that's what they have become) Printer C86 to a new C88+ but I cannot find a gimp for it. Epson is obviously washing their hands claiming that they do not support C88+ for OS9.
Anyone knows if there's a Gimp driver (maybe a universal one) to install so I can print from OS9 with the new Epson C88+???
and what were the step to install... to refresh my memory?
also, where in the OS9 folder can I find where I installed the previous Gimp driver for the C86? That may help me to get started!
thank you for your help!

Michel:
Both scripts compile in my Script Editor in 10.4.3 as copied and pasted from the OS X Hints article. BUT... I did not run them myself, and have not tried the 'hint'.
You should be using the OS X Script Editor for the job, as all the other instructions seem to be directed toward that 'environment'. The article was written in early 2005, so I assume it was based on 10.3... and there may have been changes in AppleScript between 10.2 and 10.3. By the way, the 'hint' is for printing from Classic within OS X... not for printing from a straight boot on OS 9.
The only other thing I can suggest is that the copy / paste from the article resulted in a line ending error (or somesuch). You might just try again... or try from another browser, if you're having problems with Safari.
I have the opposite problem to yours at the moment - a printer with Classic drivers only, with limited ability to print from OS X... even with foomatic, et al.
Good Luck.

• Leopard won't install on G5 tower

Hi I have consistently run into problems installing Leopard on my G5 tower. I have an original Leopard install disc family pack version 10.5 that I have used to install Leopard on my G5 Tower. It is a dual 2 gig 1st version of the G5 tower and it hates my install disc. It keeps claiming there is a fault with the install disc, but I have used it on other machines and I had it replaced once so I know it is not the disc. If I keep trying I can eventually get it to install ... sometimes, but I have had to install Tiger and do an upgrade from that to make it work in the past, and then to get it to 10.5.6 I had to download each update separately and install them rather than using a combo updater to do so. It is a time consuming pain and i was wondering if anyone out there has any information about this or has had any similar experiences. I love my G5 otherwise. Thanks for any help!

I've been installing leopard on G5 Dual core systems all week and I had problems myself but I found a good workaround (based on what I had available to me installation disk-wise).
I installed retail Tiger 10.4 (a user-burned backup copy), booted the machine once to do the registration info.
I then used the retail 10.5 Upgrade DVD (which is different from the normal retail 10.5 install DVD).
CRUCIALLY I didn't select the option to install "X11" during the installation process. That one simple omission enabled the 10.4 to 10.5 upgrade to run perfectly without a hitch or error on the G5.
I guess the moral of this is uncheck the "X11" box when installing. I usually uncheck the extra language translations and printer drivers too.
G5 towers don't much like certain Dual Layer DVD media as you may have heard already. Though the drives are rated to use them, they are very picky about the type so only make a backup copy of your OSX disks with the actual computer you will use it on so you're sure it can handle the media.
I say this after wrestling with variations of the install for a good 24hrs. I also found that if the drive you are installing to on the G5 is not formatted using the Apple Partition Map (for PPC-based installs) but has instead GUID (for Intel-based installs) Partition Map it just won't work so check through the tabs and options in Disk Utility to do with Partitions.
Even on a normal retail OSX disk I say leave X11 out when making a G5 into a Leopard machine and then install it later on.
Hope you save hours of time with this info.

• SSH - possible breakin warning

I run an ssh server a linux box in my home network so that I access things remotely. When I log in remotely from a linux machine, everything works fine. When I try to login with my new MacBook Pro running OSX 10.4.6 and X11 installed, I get the following warning:
reverse mapping checking getaddrinfo for ******** failed - POSSIBLE BREAKIN ATTEMPT
I know that sshd is configured to run a reverse mapping on machines connecting remotely by default - but I know that's not what's happening here since the error message is comming from ssh and I turned off reverse mapping on the server so I wouldn't keep getting the error message on that end. It seems my ssh client is running a reverse mapping on the server; why is it doing that? ...more importantly, how do I turn this off? I could do without the warning.
(Any insights as to why this behavior doesn't occur when I ssh from linux machines is also appreciated. I'm fairly new to all this...)

Firstly, you will need an ssh client, I assume your school computer is a Windows box. You may find that it already has something like PuTTY installed. Alternatively there are some Java web based clients you can use like this one, although I've never used any so I can't comment on their quality.
At the server end (your home) you will need to make sure that your PC has a static DHCP lease so it always has the same IP on your LAN, that your NAT is forwarding TCP port 22 to that IP, and your firewall is allowing incoming connections on that port. You will also need to know your public IP (the one that's visible on the internet). Most home broadband connections have a dynamic IP so you may want to investigate some kind of dynamic DNS service like No-IP or DynDNS. Routers often have support for these so they will automatically update if your IP changes, best to check your router first so you can choose one it supports.
Be aware that there are security considerations here, ssh is pretty secure but nothing can be guaranteed 100% bulletproof. Some kind of virtual private network (VPN) may be a better idea but you probably won't be able to get that set up at school, they can be a pain at the best of times.
Doesn't Windows allow people to install stuff in the Windows equivalent of /home? I know very little about Windows

• Mono -windows forms

im not sure if im allowed to post this or not, if not, please let me know
i switched to macs a coupla months ago and im developing with c#. so i dloaded mono and it works just fine except i cant use the System.Windows.Forms...i was looking around and found there are ways to do it, but nothings worked for me yet...
could someone please guide me in the right direction...i have bootcamp installed but i want to stick with mac

Basically, on Windows, the Microsoft SWF things tap into the various messages that the OS sends to the application.
Mono has to use the different messaging systems on the various OSs that it supports and yet create the same end-user effects.
My understanding is that they have managed to do this for the common (Li)(u)nix systems which use X11 as their underlying messaging system, but not yet for the native OSX GUI. (If you look at the mono web pages there is a brief mention of something going on in this area but I suspect that the information is rather old and probably out of date).
So, unless you (or someone) wants to get into the depths of this and write the 'driver', then X11 is necessary, at least for now.
The 'normal' terminal within OSX does not start the X11 display system, but the X11 terminal does. If you want to, I've found that you can start the X11 terminal and then shut it down (the X11 daemons etc will continue to run in the background) and the mono SWF code works well.
BTW, SWF is now built over the System.Drawing namespace and this is where the system interaction occurs.
Hope this explains the situation...

I started to download Gimp and was given a message that I needed to install x11. I have a MacBook Pro with v 10.4.11. When I tried to install x11 a message popped up that I had a newer version on my computer. What version do I need to install and how do I go about it to get Gimp to work?

Sorry to digress from the OP question...

But only the newest developer version of X11 seems to work with tablets and Gimp. And that version is only for the very newest update of Leopard. Anyone know if there will be a X11 compatible with OSX 10.4 regarding the tablet functionality?...
Well, that is not entirely correct. I am using a Graphire4 Wacom tablet and the basic mouse/pen functionality works in X11 (GIMP, GIMPshop) for pointing, clicking, drawing, etc. The main (essential) feature that is not supported in 10.4.11 version of X11 is pressure sensitivity. There are some linux drivers that support pressure sensitivity, but I think the X11 version in 10.4 still won't support it. (You might be able to find some open-source version of X11 as an alternative and compile and build it yourself if you are a developer) If anyone is aware of an update to X11 available for 10.4 that works with pressure sensitivity, please correct me if I am wrong. (Of course the pressure sensitivity works with the bundled tablet software Photoshop Elements and Corel Painter Essentials, so you can always make some layers/masks with the pen tablet using that software and then export those to your GIMP project to add more effects or to the use the tools that are missing from the bundled software)
Has pressure sensitivity support been introduced to X11 in 10.5, or is that still in development?

• X11 And GIMP

I downloaded GIMP and it saying that I need to install X11 from my OSX install disc. Well I tried installing it and it says that it is already installed with a new version and when i try to open GIMP it says to turn on X11. Any ideas how to help?

You need to go to the Optional Installs section of your install disk. If you downloaded X11 that version will not work. If X11 has been successfully installed it will appear in your Utilities folder. The first time you launch GIMP it may not finish starting up--I quit it, launched it again then waited patiently and it finally successfully started. All subsequent starts are normal.

• Some problems with X11 after upgrading to Leopard - GIMP 2.2

GIMP 2.2 crashes on start and the details explain some versioning problem of X11 native libraries. It might be issue on GIMP side that expects differen binaries to be installed (and perhaps removed by Apple due to compatibility issue). I just wanted to point this to be expected.
GIMP 2.4 for Mac OS X is not official release yet. It is only realease candidate and it should come soon hopefully with X11 issue being resolved in Leopard.

I believe that there are some known issues with X11 and BSD "under the hood" with Leopard. Fink is also broken and my old Darwin X11 attempts to run but nothing happens.

• X11 not working on Mac OSX 10.4.11

The Mac OS X version is 10.4.11
X11 opens and then automatically shuts down.
I tried the following already with no luck:
Installed x11 from the Mac OSX Tiger DVD.
Installed using the instructions on this website.
Installed the X11 2006 update from here.
None of them worked. X11 still closes automatically after opening it.
Any thoughts?

Imperial:
I have two units running 10.4.11, one of them I downloaded X11 from Apple and the other I checked off install X11 when I upgraded to 10.4.11 not too long ago. I just checked both of them for launching X11, thinking there was something about the window opening and then closing before opening, but they both just opened. Did you run "repair permissions" after you installed the '06 update? or did you restart the computer after installing? Don't know, but something isn't right. Perhaps try to re-install, but run repair permission before and after if you haven't already done that.

• What is X11 and Why does GIMP require it

Hello all,
I use GIMP at work on a Windows workstation, and love it.  I have just downloaded the mac version but on boot up it prompts me to locate the 'X11'.
What is X11?
where is it located?
and
Why does GIMP need it so badly?
Thanking you all in advance

If I recall X11 is an optional install on your installer dvd's.  I don't remember if it's a option on the main install or an addition on the second dvd.
When it gets installed the X11 app will be in your /Applications/Utilities folder.  There is also additional stuff the app needs in other directories on your boot drive as well.
As for what X11 is, here's a wiki reference.  Basically the mac version of gimp needs x11 as it's windowing layer (probably the easiest way to port gimp to the mac).

• Sharing clipboard and pasteboard between Wireshark(X11) and Mac OSX

I installed latest Wireshark for Mac version. However, it is interesting that I cannot copy what I have copied in Wireshark and the paste it in my Mac any editor. The reverse direction is also the same. If I have any wireshark filter I would like to apply to Wireshark, it is also not allowed.
I learned that it is because the X11 clipboard and pasteboard are different from Mac OSX.
Do you know if there is any available workaround configuration I can do so as to allow them to share?

By checking through Apple
Discussion Forum, I fixed the problem by below procedure:
1. Delete any ".X" file in your home directory, such as ".Xauthority", in my
case
- It will be automatically recreated
2. Delete "org.x.X11.plist" in ~/Library/Preferences
- It will be automatically recreated
3. Moving the .wireshark and .wireshark-etc to other name
When I open wireshark again, it would like a program having just newly
installed and start over again.
Then I can copy and paste the content between Wireshark packet-capture and
editor in MacOS.
