OSX 10.5.8 to Mavericks?

Hello,
My July 2009 MacBook is currently running the same OSX 10.5.8 it came with. If I purchase Snow Leopard from the Mac store online and install it, will I be able to then install Mavericks OSX 10.9?
If I can, what will happen exactly? I have iLife and iWork installed. Do they update to the correct spec automatically? Will I need to do it manually? Will I have to pay to do it, or, indeed, for anything after the initial £14 for Snow Leopard?
Also, will all my files stay unharmed on my laptop or will I need to back them up, etc?
Many thanks!

Yes, you can.
OSX Mavericks: System Requirment:

iLife as well as iWork will update to the latest.
Files remain as it is, though you'd better back them up.

MY QUE IS, WILL IT BE FIXED IF I UPGRADE FROM OSX 10.8.5 TO MAVERICKS? What other options do I have? What can be an approximate cost for fixing this problem?

Of course not. It's a hardware problem, so it can't be fixed by upgrading software. The only option you have got is to take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller.
That error indicates a problem with the hard drive. What you have to do is to make a backup of your files and take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller, so they can confirm that the problem is the hard drive and not the SATA connector, which could be worse.
If it's a hard drive issue, it's not expensive (about $100-200, depending on the hard drive). If it's a SATA connector issue, the whole logic board may have to be replaced.
Note that you can replace the hard drive yourself if you want, but the cost between doing it yourself and taking the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller is similar

  • Upgrading OSX 10.6.8 to mavericks. please help me in this.

Hello.. i am using OSX 10.6.8 and FCP 7.0.3. if i upgrade to mavericks. will anything happen to my fcp or projects. please help me in this.

You need to reseach all the hardware and software you have not just FCP.
Check your Mac as plenty of RAM and disk space and the correct CPU.
Check any peripherals, printers scanners, external disk storage of any type.
In fact anything you use requires checking for compatibility.
You may get more answers in the FCP forums, I use FCE 4.01 and it works for me in Mavericks but I am not a power user.

Have a good backup and restore options, which you should have any way, if the upgrade does not go as planned you can restore to the previous system.
I run Mavericks on both my Macs, works well for me but you need to check all options.

  • OSX 10.6.8 to Mavericks

Hello, I am using a late 2009 Macbook Pro (2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; 4GB) currently running OSX 10.6.8.  I'm trying to get Mavericks to download and having troubles, which seem similar to other people.  Once Mavericks is downloaded, it returns "this disk cannot be used to start your computer".
I've tried verifying the disk and everything seems to be in working order.  I cannot, however, reboot from the startup.  Perhaps I am doing something wrong, but when I hold Ctrl R at startup, nothing happens.  It just goes directly to the normal startup login window.  Here is a snap shot of my disk utility
It seems that I need to do a full reset of the hardrive, but I am hesitant to do that.  Any ideas?
I don't think I am running any apps that would interfere.  I have also backed everything up on a hard drive using Time Machine.
    Thanks

  • Mac osx 10.6.8 to mavericks always fail

i dont even know what shall i do to fix this problem
all i wanna do is to update my mac to mavericks but that isnt happening even after downloading mavericks several times
in each time it reach half way and finish downloading
when it starts to install it fails
anyone knows what shall i do?
    am running mac osx 10.6.8

Check your download speed here > Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test
Less than 10Mbps, the file may be timing out before it can finish the installation.
Be aware, with Mavericks installed, if you need to repair the startup disk or restore OS X that requires using OS X Recovery which requires a high speed broadband connection as noted here.
Mavericks requires 8GB of disk space.
Control click the MacintoshHD icon on your desktop or open the Finder, right or control click startup disk in the Sidebar on the left then click Get Info.
You'll see Available and Capacity. Make sure there's at least 15% available disk space.

  • Where to download OSX Mountain Lion (now that Mavericks is out)?

I have a 2005 Macbook Pro Intel Core Duo running 10.7.5 and tried unsuccessfully to upgrade to Mavericks.  Because the Macbook is too old, Mavericks is not supported on it.
So given that, I'd like to upgrade the Macbook to the last version of OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.  But can't find it in the App store any more.  Is there someplace to download and install this older version for older computers like mine?

I called Apple Support Sales, 800-My-Apple, and their response was that while 10.9 Mavericks is free for download, those computers that cannot support 10.9, but are on 10.7.5 or earlier can PURCHASE 10.8 at $19.95.
I found this unfair, given that newer Macs can upgrade for free, but older ones have to pay to get an older version of the SW.  It looks like either I come up with $19.95, get a new MacBook Pro, or just stay with 10.7.5.
I don't think that this is good customer relations.

  • Mac mini won't upgrade from osx 10.7.5 to Mavericks

I have a Mac Mini (mid2010) 2,4GHz Core2 duo 4Gb RAM with OSX 10.7.5 and when I try to download Mavericks through App Store I always get: "...unable to verify your computer.."
NOT a matter of Apple ID (works fine elsewhere), according to Apple support (OS X Mavericks: requisiti di sistema) it should download fine 'n easy but so it isn't.
Have tried a thousand times now, always the same. Anyone any clue?
    thanks

it is, I am positive that it is. I'm running OS X 10.7.5 when it says now Yosemite needs
Compatibility: OS X 10.6.8 or later

  • Anyone recently updated from OSX 10.8.5 to Maverick ?

I would deeply appreciate some input on updating to Maverick. Any issues? Is it worthy? I've been reading about many problems!

If you go to http://www.apple.com/osx/ and read the links labeled "See What's New >" and "Learn More >" that will tell you a lot about Mavericks.
A bootable clone is copy of the system disk that is made in such a fashion so as to be able to boot your Mac. It has a complete copy of everything that is on your system disk currently. When booted from the clone, your Mac will appear exactly the same as it did when the clone was made.
To make a bootable clone you need a disk drive on which the clone will be written formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and GUID partition map. You need cloning software to copy all the data over and make the disk bootable. I know of two applications that can do cloning which are SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner.

did the update to Maverick from OSX ML and boy has it slowed down my whole computer big time, what a mistake to have done this..... the whole computer has dramattically slowed, I thought Apple advertised be faster and slicker and better use of resources and I got 16gb Ram and 500gb HDD and 3.6 ghz processor, OSX Lion was snappier than this what a big mistake since this was installed.
Thanks god I did a disk image of the machine before I did it Ill go back and stay with OSX ML until Apple sorts problems I see many issues has risen and also Mail is playing up big time so who screwed that up?

Check your Activity Monitor to identify what might be slowing your system. Mavericks is as fast, if not faster, as Mountain Lion for me and I'm using a 2009 MacMini with 8 Gigs of RAM.

  • OSX 10.5.8 to Mavericks via Snow Leopard

    Hi there,
I am taking my Imac from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard then to Mavericks.
There seems to quite about of info about this.
I'll backup my personal folder to USB flash flash (pictues, music etc) before going to Snow Leopard.
We have an iBook that is also running 10.5.8
Can I use the same Snow Leopard disk (as used on the iMac) to upgrade?
The iBook is shared with the Imac.
Please advise of the steps necessary and any tips..
    Many thanks,
    Mark

You can't run Snow Leopard on an iBook. Snow Leopard requires an Intel machine.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
As I stated previously, you cannot upgrade an iBook past Leopard.

I ran an update to install Maverick, shut down, then when I restarted, I was forced to the OS X Utility menu, and nothing I do gets me out of it. I have multiple Time Machine backups, but they never actually restart the machine, it just goes right back to the utility menu.
I'm currently volunteering in the middle of the Serengeti in Tanzania, so taking it to the Genius Bar is not an option. Can anyone help?
    Many thanks in advance!!
    Cheers,

Unfortunately the internal drive has malfunctioned. If you can't restore from a Time Machine backup in Recovery mode, there is probably nothing else you can do. You could try to reinstall OS X and then transfer your data in Setup Assistant, but that's a 5 GB download and is not likely to happen unless you have satellite Internet, and maybe not even then.

  • Server File Sharing unstable on mac and windows network on Mavericks and OSX Server 3.0

Since I've updated our mac mini server from Mountain Lion and OSX Server 2.X to Mavericks and OSX Server 3.0  we are having sharing issues with Windows (7 and 8) and OSX Mavericks users, not being able to access files on the mac mini server.
What I've notice is that OSX Serer 3.0 stop working and I have to restart the Mac Mini Server to make things start working again.
This was not happening with Mountain Lion and OSX Server 2.X.
On the Windows and OSX users what happen is the computers keep trying to connect to the server and are not being able to open or copy files. Again this is intermittent, and I suspect it might be a OSX Server bug.
Any one having the same problem or can give us and advice would be great help.
    Thanks.
    Andre Tenenbaum

I too am having this exact problem as well as a few of my network administrator contacts that have gone through the Mavericks / Server 3 upgrade.
It may be worth noting that before the upgrade I had run a mac mini server (core 2 duo) that never had any unintentional downtime, and the current mac server had never gone down or lost connection so I know it has nothing to do with user or network configuration.
    NAS server hardware:
    - Mac Mini core i5
    - 16 GiB ram
    -  Promise Pegasus Raid5 external drive (thunderbolt)
I am NOT running time machine as the backup.
Everyting posted above is occuring although the rate at which my users lose acces is sporadic.  Sometimes the server will stay up 24-36 hours and sometimes it will only stay up for around 4.  Every user, every group loses acces AT THE EXACT SAME TIME EVERYTIME to EVERY SHAREPOINT...all of my local users as well as my remote users.  All of my users are on Windows machines (mostly win7, but a couple of XP and 8 users as well).  The share is accessed via a mapped drive using the format x.x.x.x/share and I have had 0 issues with getting users connected.  The problem is 100% keeping them connected.  When the users lose access the get the "drive cannot be accessed" error on their end, however when I check the server 3 app, it still shows all users connected and I have let it run for a few minutes and the idle times do change.
I also cannot see any spikes in the Activity monitor that might indicate a memory strain issue on the server side, but I assume that is because I am not watching the Activity Monitor at the moment everyone loses access.
Let me say that the SMB2 protocol does work much better when it actually works, much faster, but intermitent connectivity is a VERY SERIOUS ISSUE and has resulted in several corrupt files for my workers already.  Also, because I was one of the unfortunate people that had the upgrade lock up on me and I had to restart it, I lost my 10.8.x recover backup and so I would have to do a clean install in order to restore my server back to its original state. I am also hesitant to do this because I would most likely only be able to download the Server3 app from the app store and I have not heard from apple or any other power user group on whether the bug is with the app or the OS.
