OSX 10.6.4 Snow Leopard on Mac G4 867

Hi guys!
I want to know if a G4 867 mhz is capable of running Snow Leopard 10.6.4? I need to know this urgently.
Thanks!

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Furthermore, no G4, nor G5 is an Intel.
Furthermore, no Intel Mac has Classic compatibility. It does have compatibility for PowerPC applications that will run in Mac OS X but limited driver support.
Furthermore, your machine is capable of running normal Leopard, which is all Mac OS X versions 10.5.0 to 10.5.8. However, if you upgrade to 10.5 or later, you'll need to either partition the hard drive to maintain Classic, or setup Mac OS 9 drivers if they aren't already so you can dual boot into 9, since Mac OS X 10.5 does not support Classic. This means erasing the hard drive, or setting up a second ATA, hard drive, or Firewire hard drive with 10.4.11 or earlier, or 9 if your machine was able to boot into 9 before.
No G4 nor G5 offers Boot Camp compatibility. Some no longer easily available emulators exist for G4 and G5 Macs, but only Intel Macs have native Intel Virtualization software available to run Windows and Linux on them.
Apple still sells 10.5 through its online store phone number, but not website. If you get it from another company, be sure it is the full retail that looks like * and does not say Upgrade, Dropin, or OEM on it.

  • How do I transfer Notes from my Outlook Mac 2011 to my iPhone 4S (iOS 6)? I am using OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro

    Hi,
I want to know how I can transfer Notes in my Outlook: Mac 2011 to my iPhone 4S.
Am using a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard and my 4S is on iOS 6.
    Jesal

    Finally figured it out...
    1) Open mail/compose notes on your macbook...
    2) copy and paste every note from Outlook to a new note in Mail.
    3) Open iTunes. In Info/Advanced tick Notes. This will replace / copy all Notes from Mail to your iPhone...
    4) Voila! Notes are on iPhone...
I must say in spite of all the fabulous advantages of a Macbook and an iPhone, syncing really does suck...
Transferring data from another smartphone to a Mac or an iPhone is tough...
Features like "one way / two way" sync for Phone / computer or allowing us to select which whose, phone or computer, will be considered more important so that you can choose whose data will overwrite the other, are not there in iTunes... This is something which really needs to be there...
    Anyways... problem solved for now...
    ciao...

Before buying anything you should first make sure your machine will accept the upgrade you have in mind.
Minimum specs for Snow Leopard.              Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard -Read the Technical Specifications
In the UK …  the last known price was £14.
Before you start upgrading, back up your files.
Once you have upgraded to Snow Leopard you will need to download and apply the Combo updater.   Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
Then follow with a software update to pick up any later updates.

First off you need to know the model identifier of the machine, not all Mac's can be reverted to Snow Leopard and not all Mac's can use the 10.6.3 Retail disk!
To find the model identifier, boot the machine up and hold the command key and the spacebar, Spotlight appears at the top right corner and type in System Profiler and press Enter/Return.
The model identifier should be something like "MacBook Pro 9,2" or something of that nature.
You also can hold D while the computer is booting on/near a Internet connection for a long time and this loads Hardware Test, which one of the panes will give the required information.
Next you download MacTracker here and look up your machine and it's original operating system.
(Don't click the AppStore version obviously)
    http://mactracker.ca/
You may have to right or control click on the program to bypass Apple's Gatekeeper and run the program.
If you have the model identifier and the machine won't boot, then just ask here and we can tell you the information
Now all Intel Mac's issued before July 2011 can install Snow Leopard, but the Mac's released after July 2011 came with OS X 10.7 Lion and the firmware won't boot off the Snow Leopard disk. (however 10.6 can be shoehorned on using Firewire Target Disk Mode and another Mac for some models after July 2011)
Also the 10.6.3 Snow Leopard Retail Disk sold at Apple only works on Mac's that came with 10.4-10.6.2 from the factory.
Any Mac's that originally came with 10.6.3-10.6.8 from the factory need model specific disks from Apple directly, not sold at their online store, you will have to call them with your Mac's serial number and order these disks.
If you get the right disk and have the right machine, then you should be able to insert the disk and hold c down or the option/alt key and boot from the 10.6 disk.
Follow these directions and make sure to erase the ENTIRE DRIVE first in Disk Utility or you will have issues later trying to fix it from the disk.

You need to purchase the upgrade disk (it is a DVD). Then just put it in and run the installer. When it was first released it was $29 USD, do not know if the price has changed or not.
The usual precautions about backing up your data apply. In fact I would recommend either making a Disk Image of your current boot drive or using something like Carbon Copy Cloner to copy it to an external drive. I upgraded 5 machines from Leopard to Snow Leopard without any issues, but better to be safe than sorry.

  • How can I install Mac OS X Snow Leopard on Mac OS X Tiger?

Hello. Can someone tell me how I can install Mac OS X Snow Leopard on Mac OS X Tiger? I have the disk, but when I open the installer, I get a message saying that Snow Leopard could not be installed on my computer and it could only be installed on a Intel-Based Mac. This is a PowerPC Mac, so that makes sense.
So, I'm trying to ask how to make my Mac an Intel-Based Mac so I could install Snow Leopard. Or if I can't do that, I need to know how to install Snow Leopard some other way. Please help.

Just an FYI, the Mac App Store was introduced with Mac OS X 10.6.6.    However the rest of what you say is accurate.
10.6.8 is required if you want to upgrade certain Macs beyond 10.7.5 without having to reformat the drive you are installing the operating system on and without having to install some version of 10.7 first.
One can actually install 10.7 or later if you maintain an original copy of the full installer of the operating system in question for your personal use without having to have the prerequisite operating system installed, if the hardware supported it.  But that's a discussion for another forum.
    For HFTaylor,
Consider buying a used or refurbished Mac with an Intel CPU depending on your needs.  Read this tip about the migration of data from PowerPC to Intel before proceeding:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295
and see this tip about used and refurbished Macs*:

  • Upgrade to snow leopard from mac os x 10.4.11 ?

how can I get mac box set to upgrade to snow leopard from mac os x 10.4.11?
Is it really an improve or it doesn't work so well?
    Thank you

    Hi,
I wanted to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard and bought a retail 10.6 Snow Leopard install disc MC223Z/A. on the box. 2Z691-6428-A on the disc.
It would not let me install it unless I erased and partitioned the destination disc thus losing my settings and preferences like the old Archive and Install as it suggested in the article mentioned below..
I tried this after reading this article
    http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9137147/Upgrading_to_Apple_s_Snow_Leopard _OS_What_you_need_to_know.
I presume now that the article was written for upgrading from Leopard and not Tiger.
Perhaps I missed something when I tried.
    Regards from UK,

  • Snow leopard to mac os x maverick

Hi all, I recently upgraded snow leopard to mac os x maverick. This has slowed down my mac to almost stop. Is there any way I can downgrade back to Snow Leopard?

Insert the Mac OS X install DVD, restart with the C key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the partition with Mavericks, and then either install Snow Leopard onto it or restore a backup.

  • After installing OC X Snow leopard my Mac won't go to sleep. unless I close everything out.  It wasn't like that before the "upgrade".  How do I fix it?  Thanks

After installing OC X Snow leopard my Mac won't go to sleep. unless I close everything out.  It wasn't like that before the "upgrade".   I have looked at the Energy saving icon and everything looks OK.  How do I fix it?  Thanks

    OK I solved it.
    I followed instructions from http://superuser.com/questions/214943/what-is-preventing-my-macbook-from-sleepin g/409481/
Go to Utilities in the Applications folder and open the "Terminal" app.
Type pmset -g and hit Enter
If "sleep" has 0 next to it and the words "imposed by" or "prevented by ; The number next to the imposed by is the process ID causing the problem. Copy that number.
Type ps -e | grep <process ID here> and hit Enter. This will list all running processes that have that ID (will also include the grep process)
For me it turned out to be Internet Sharing enabled that prevented my MBP from sleeping.

  • I installed OSX server 10.6 snow leopard on my IMAC, but still have choppy videos. can anyone tell me how to fix the problem

I installed OSX server 10.6 snow leopard on my IMAC, but still have choppy videos. can anyone tell me how to fix the problem

By your use of "still", did this problem exist before OS X Server was installed?  OS X Server itself has no particular linkages to video processing, beyond what OS X client provides.
Some details on the configuration might be useful.  Are these videos you're having issues with stored locally in files, or are these videos received over the network and played?  If the videos are local, have you tried playing the videos from a different disk?  If the video files are remote, can you download the videos and play them as a test?
What software are you using to play the videos?  QuickTime?  QuickTime X?  Does using VLC or another player work better?  There are some discussions of choppy videos around the forums, too.

  • Will Mac Mini with OSX Server 10.6 Snow Leopard be able to fit my needs?

    Hello,
The office i work in is a Mac environment.
Is this unit powerful enough to support 20 people? This is the setup i was thinking:
Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server - 2.66GHz : Dual 500GB:
1st Internal drive - OS only
2nd Internal drive - OS backup via CarbonCopyCloner
Ministack USB drive - Data backup via Time Machine (file shares etc on server from services)
Firewire DroboPro 16TB - Client Time Machine Backups via the Network.
Would the Mac Mini be powerfull enough to support normal OS X Server services, and at the same time act as a client Time-Machine backup via the network?
    Thanks,
    -Mike

The answer to your question depends on how many of the services you intend to offer.
If you are just going to use the Mini as a File, Print, and directory server, then it will work fine.
If you intend it to run as your web, email, database, and iChat server, you might be pushing things a bit much.
Your drive layout looks appropriate for a simple file server, so I would tentatively say yes, it looks like it would do what you currently require.

  • Installing Snow Leopard on Mac Mini Server

I recently purchased a 1Tb 4Gb Mac Mini Server, running Snow Leopard Server. I want to use it as a central repository for my other macs: storing music, movies, backup, screen sharing (it's hooked up to my 32-inch TV) but I also want to be able to run Logic Pro, Ableton Live, etc. I also have a Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard Client, which contains all of my programs, plugins, data, etc. I realize that Snow Leopard Server does not have migration assistant, so I have tried to install a retail copy of Snow Leopard onto the secondary drive, but when it gets to the restart stage it crashes every time. I think this is a firmware issue, because the Mac Mini has a different hardware configuration to other macs. I do not have access to the mid-2010 Snow Leopard Client for Mac Mini which would allow me to install Client and use migration assistant from there. What I would like to know is:
1/ Can I manually migrate my plugins/settings/programs to the server? If so, how? What is most crucial (and what I don't understand) is copying my audio units and audio programs (e.g. Logic Pro, Pro Tools). Because of the firmware issue, it seems more difficult than cloning my MacBook Pro to a time machine HDD and running from there... I would really like to purely clone my MacBook Pro, because I am very happy with the way it is set up.
2/ Should I just wait for OSX Lion (July/August) which seems to be a combined server/client os, install that on both machines and run migration assistant from there?
3/ Is there another method I can use? Something I am overlooking?
    Thanks in Advance.

Thanks for your reply. I talked to the Apple Support again and they told me the server edition could only be used on that OS and if I wanted to use it as something else I could chose not to use the server applications, or buy a regular Mac mini. And that was all they said. Interesting since it was one of their sales persons who told me I could install Snow Leopard.
Anyway, I got hold of a client disc and it all worked like a charm.

  • Can I restore a time machine osx lion backup using snow leopard install DVD?

    Hi.
I've been using osx lion but my hard drive died. Fortunately I have been making time machine backups.  Since I downloaded lion from the app store I only have the snow leopard install disks.
I know there is an option to restore from a time machine backup using the snow leopard disk, but since the time machine backup is of a later operating system (lion) will that  time machine restore work?
If it won't, can you recommend how to restore from my time machine backup?
    Thanks.

Once the replacement hard drive is installed, boot from your original Snow Leopard Installation Disk.  From there format the harddrive and install Snow Leopard and then download and install its Updates. Next, navigate to the Mac App Store and login using the Exact same Apple User ID that you did the first time you downloaded Lion.  You will now be able to download and install the Lion OS for Free. Download and install the Lion Updates.  Lastly, using Migration Assistant, migrate your Apps and Data from the Time Machine external hard drive to your internal Lion harddrive.  This method should give you a very stable version of Lion on your internal harddrive complete with all your previous settings, Apps and Data.
    Hope this helps

  • 22" iMac desktop OSX 10.6.6 Snow Leopard and it won't boot. I've tried shift start, option command+P+R. It's stuck at the restart, all I see is the spinning wheel below the apple logo.

I have a 22" iMac desktop running OSX 10.6  Snow Leopard and it won't boot. I've tried shift start, option command P R. It's stuck at the restart, all I see is the spinning wheel below the apple logo. And I lost my OSX DVD is there any way to fix this? I just did a software update yesterday and have about 20GB left on my Hard drive. The last thing I did was try to install some plugin's for Pro Tools 8, but it wouldnt let me install so I restarted and now I'm screwed. Please Help!
other specs for my computer: 3.06GHz Intel core 2 duo processor 500 GB Serial ATA hard drive, iSight, magic mouse, wireless mac keyboard
    iPod classic 160GB (Late 2009), Mac OS X (10.6.6)

You have to consider the possibility the hard drive may be dying.    If your data isn't backed up, try one of the tools below:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
Once you are sure your data is backed up, we can examine other possibilities.  In the meantime call AppleCare for your original installation DVDs.  You may need them.

    ani12,
Without any headphones connected go to system preferences/sound/ouput tab and see if built in speakers is selected if not try selecting it. Also make sure mute is not checked and volume is up.
You can also try a NVRAM reet:
Power off the mac then powerit back up holding the following keys
    COMMAND+OPTION+P+R
continue to hold the keys till you hear the start chime 2 times then release, reboot.
