OSX 10.6.5  won't startup bootcamp

Help...I've installed boot camp and Windows 7 on my black macbook Santa Rosa(2.4Ghz,4Mb RAM) and have a serious problem where I can no longer boot into OSX.
OSX freezes with the apple logo and timer, but also has an extra progress bar that I have not seen before.
Has anyone else encountered or heard of this problem?
This is the second time that this exact thing has happened(the last time I just reinstalled everything, as I wanted to increase the size of the windows partition anyway), but really don't have the time to go through all of that again.
The first time that this happened, I ran disk utility from the Snow Leopard disk, and attempted to verify permissions and disk but to no avail.
Any help would be most appreciated...

The problem is with OS X, not Windows.
Backup your systems, both. Seeing you don't have the time to, don't know that anything will be of help.
What you are seeing is a dirty OS X file system and you need to repair the hard drive; also clone and backup Mac partition.
Paragon Software has ability to resize the two, but that should never be done without backups and a reliable drive that doesn't have any issues at all.
btw, verifying is pretty much useless, use REPAIR and use your OS X DVD or another hard drive.

  • Re-install OSX without losing Windows7 partition? (preserving Bootcamp)

Recently my computer stopped booting into mac OS (apparently unfixable, details on that deduction are below).
    The question:
I plan to reinstall MacOSX (from my startup disc).
However, I'd like to be sure that this won't destroy Bootcamp's partitioning. (because windows7 currently still starts fine).
Can anyone confirm that losing bootcamp is not a concern?
I'm worried that maybe it is just assumed that reinstalling OSX will destroy the old Bootcamp setup?
(my google searches haven't brought up any examples of my specific situation).
    More details:
After moving my iMac (i7, 27") to a new desk, I started it up and walked away. the power supply started beeping horribly (its backup battery had lost charge, i assume). I stupidly pressed the power button to turn the UPS off, to stop the beeping, even though the iMac was still starting up. This killed the power. oops.
I could swear I was able to restart in OSX that night... but maybe my memory is flawed- because ever since, the iMac has hung up while starting up. maybe "freezing up" is the better term? except pinwheel is still spinning... (I'd also swear I left the mac in sleep mode that night, but when I came back the next day it was turned off. not sure if my memory is flawed... or if gremlins are tormenting me)
The next morning when I started up, I noticed a progress bar beneath the Apple logo, which i'd never seen before. after a couple minutes this bar went away, and I was just left with the spinning pinwheel below the apple logo. I let this run for more than an hour before giving up (giving up == holding the power button for several second to force it to power off).
    - I restarted with option held down, and was able to load the windows partition just fine. (and am still able to).
    - I restarted with cmd-v held down to enter verbose mode and see what's up. seemed to become hung up after printing " Rebuilding catalog B-tree"
    - I rebooted with cmd-option-p-r keys held down, to reset pram and nvram. no change.
    - I restarted with cmd-s held down so I could type something at the command line. I entered the suggested "/sbin/fsck -fy" text.
here is quick snapshot of what it displayed, when this failed:
    http://www.warrenblyth.com/remote/probs/iMacHOME-commandLine_s.jpg
(basically, it went from "rebuilding catalog B-tree" to "the volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired")
    - I restarted with d key held down and ran the quick version of diagnostics. it said there were no hardware problems. (i did not run the longer version). I rebooted to the same hung-up problem.
    - I held c to boot from my startup disc (which took maybe 3 minutes? long time?). ... (sidenote: I thought this would just let me into the old desktop, like booting windows into safe mode. but instead it was just a limited menu set, like I was stuck in a program I couldn't quit. I believe it was prompting me to start installing OS. I managed to switch over to the disc utility program, by attempting to exit the default program, I believe. I get so frustrated/angry/emotional over epic computer problems that it seems to affect my memory).
    - In Disk Utility I clicked "verify disk permissions" button. It predicted this would take 7 minutes, but it just stopped runnig after maybe 2 minutes. no results were displayed.
    - So I clicked "verify disk".
here is a quick snapshop of results:
    http://www.warrenblyth.com/remote/probs/imac-verifyDiskFAIL_s.jpg
(basically, it says problem can't be fixed and I should reformat)
This is when I decided it was a lost cause and my only remaining option was to reformat the mac partition. (yeah? make sense?)
    Bonus:
    - I restarted in Windows and copied everything I could think of off of the old mac portion of the hard drive. I had to reformat my WDmyBook external HDD to windows friendly formatting for this. I noticed this when looking at disk partitions:
    http://www.warrenblyth.com/remote/probs/homeMac-partitions_s.jpg
probably nothing interesting here. I just thought it weird that there were 4 partitions instead of two. Wondered if one of these partitions was devoted to startup, and could be fixed without destroying the core mac partition.
My gut says there is probably just some start up glitch, and if I was smarter I could fix it without erasing all the old Mac files and installed programs. Though I'm also worried it may be a physical disc error, and reinstalling OSX won't solve anything. maybe I've ruined the machine and should seek replacement HW. ?
Really just posting here to see if anyone has advice. and to help anyone else who might be in same spot of confusion.
    Thanks for any tips.

#1 You need a more robust program to fix the Mac boot drive like Alsoft Disk Warrior.
I stopped bothering with using Apple First Aid.
    #2 You can lose Windows
#3 Try SuperDuper to clone Mac volume to another HFS+ partition.
HFS has its weaknesses. You probably continued using OS X after freezes or other problems.
Ideal is to reformat and restore both.
If there was a bad sector that is something chkdsk could deal with.
If the bad sector is in the hidden partition tables, you have to reformat.
Reformat is the best way going forward.
Even replacing a disk drive is something you can do. You probably want backup drive for each OS though.
And there are 3rd party disk maintenance programs. And should always be backed up and ready to restore a system without exception. Even if possible to doing trial runs to make sure how to.
I would spend the money to fix the directory in Mac OS X rather than the free reinstall of OS X - after making a bootable clone with SuperDuper, and repairing the clone as well first.
You may (dare I say "should") install Mac OS only just 30GB partition on a hard drive to use for fixing your system, instead of using CD or DVDs. And a partition large enough to hold your current Mac system to use for backup clone.
Windows HFS9 driver from Paragon allows read and write ability. They also have an NTFS drive for OS X to add write support. Good Windows backup tools.
    Paragon for Mac
    SuperDuper
    DiskWarrior

  • Won't startup freezing

My iMac desktop computer won't startup anymore... Was freezing up intermittently lately, but now it gets stuck on the grey Apple logo.
I tried reinstalling OSX and no change. There are no abnormal sounds coming from it either. I am currently running the extended hardware test after reading the troubleshooting manual that came with the computer by inserting the original system disk1 in the drive and holding down the D key while powering on.
It has been running for about 6 minutes now and is almost 1/2 way done. Any ideas??? Suggestions???? Would be a great help.
    Thank you in advance

And I can't find it.  I'm going to leave it off and unplugged until the morning.  We'll see what happens then.  If nothing, I may be making an impromptu drive to the Apple Store.

  • What Can I do? Powerbook won't startup/Reinstall interupted/corrupted

    Hi
1)imovie crashed and froze everything (finder too) on saving.
2)Now can't log in to my main admin account. Freezes after selecting it in the startup screen. It takes a LONG time to get to the users login screen.
3)Repaired Perms./Verified Disk using startup disk. No errors. Still No go.
4)I have a second account (also admin!)- It's ok.
I wouldn't be averse to deleteing an account but I need to get all my emails etc. from there.
    Uh Oh
Well I made a fatal error!!!
I tried reinstalling OSX and archiving the users/settings...The installer couldn't finish.
    Now the Mac won't startup
and won't work in Target disk mode!TDM just freezes both computers.
Hard drive test shows no errors. Can't check permissions though. This always stops with an error saying try again.
My only hope will be to go and buy disk warrior tomorrow and see if I can save something from the drive B4 a complete reinstall.
    Any Suggestions? Please?

First have you tried booting the computer from another hard drive (eg a firewire drive using the option button at startup) to see if it's a hardware problem or software problem (or a physical problem with teh internal hard drive)
based on you saying that it takes a long time to get to the login screen and target mode does not work i'd speculate that the hard drive might be on it's way out. This is what most users tend to say when there hard drive is failing. The next thing you usualy get is a horrible whiring sound. hardware test such as those in techtool don't allways show hard drive falure, my internal one recently died and techtool reports everything is within normal paramaters (even S.M.A.R.T !)
if you manage to gain access to your hard drive by whatever means then i'd suggest backing up everything you need and wiping it. then try a fresh install.
it may also help to reset the non volotile ram. to do this you need to hold commandoption+of to enter open firmware mode, then type "reset-nvram" followed by return and then "reset-all" followed by return. it will ask you for a password if you added one using the firmware utility.

  • Final Cut Pro3 won't startup, I just get the beachball!

Can anyone tell me why my Final Cut Pro 3 won't startup under System OSX 10.3.9? It worked under 10.2.x but I haven't used in in a year or more and since upgrades to 10.3.9 the program won't startup. I just get the spinning beachball. I've re-installed it but still the same problem. Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jag11

What updates have you done to your system in the last year? Anything that would make your system a compatible configuration no longer?
While you mention that you've re-installed, have you specifically trashed your preferences for FCP 3? (Re-installing rarely tends to do much good on a Mac. Trashing preferences is usually a better bet. Not to mention a whole lot faster.)

  • Installed helpdesk to sles11sp1 vmware and won't startup

    Hi,
I installed the service desk to sles11sp1 for vmware and it won't startup.
I am also running zenworks configuration mgmt 11 RC3 on the same server.
    I installed with:
    java -install install.jar -console
When prompted for a port I took the default 8700. It gave me a null and then prompted for a 1 to continue. So I selected 1 and continued.
    If I http://ip:8700 I get nothing.
    If I netstat -a -n|grep 8700 I get nothing.
What do I need to do to get this to work? Also I thought I could get this service desk integrated with zenworks configuration management?

Firefox won't startup so I can get to its preferences, profiles or anything else for that matter. This happens every time I try to start it up. I've recently reloaded my system software and transfered my systems settings from a backup hard drive that Time Machine (Mac app.) saved.

2nd Gen iPad Mini stopped working yesterday.  Won't startup under and configuration and is not recognized by my iMac.  I believe it upgraded itself to iOS 8 (????)

    Hey Kenneth,
So it sounds as if your iPad is not responding at all when you try to turn it on, is that correct? If so, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or doesn't turn on - Apple Support
If you get it to start up and it is still not recognized by iTunes on your Mac, use the steps in this article to troubleshoot that issue -
If you don't see your connected device in iTunes for Mac - Apple Support
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Happy computing,

I took the system file out of the system folder on os 9.2 can't boot to put file back in machine also has osx 10.2 but won't let me boot to either need os 9 compatible boot disk I think?

If the OS X 10.2 on the hard drive is/was bootable, try this -
Restart or boot, then immediately press the X key, keep it held down until you know the machine has started to boot using OS X. This is a hardware instruction to the Mac to boot using the first usable instance of OS X it finds.
Once booted to OS X, you should be able to move OS 9's System file into OS 9's System Folder.
Note - in general, unless you know for sure what you are doing and that the results are desired, do not relocate or rename files in OS 9's System Folder or in OS X's System or Library folders.

It will start up fine w/out ethernet cables, but with ethernet, it won't startup.  I have two wired connections, my thunderbolt display/mbp and my cannon printer.
It will sit with amber light solid.
When I disconnect the two ethernet cables, it will startup fine.  Then I connect the two cables and everything is good.
This is a new from apple store today 2tb TC.  It's taken about 2 hours to get it setup until now I've figured out the ethernet cable issue.  Is there a fix?  I'm probably going to exchange it tomorrow or in the next couple of days if there's no fix provided.

Well, it's working fine today.  I'll continue to try it over the next couple of days and if it happens more, I'll take it back for an exchange.  It happend quite a few times last night.
I have apple care for my mbp, so this should be covered on it.  About 1.5 years left.
    Thanks.
I'll update this post if I end up needing to exchange it.

  • My G4 AGP won't startup after turning on firewire target disk mode

Can any one help me on this? I have a G4 AGP Graphics Mac running 10.4.11.
I turned on firewire target disk mode in the startup utilities to transfer files to my G5. The G4 started up in Firewire just fine and I could open it up as a drive on my G5, but the problem now is that the G4 won't startup in anything but firewire mode.
So my question is: How do you shut off the firewire target disk mode? I have tried all the keyboard commands at startup and inserted the Tiger install disk and holding the C key, but nothing will let me get me passed the Firewire Icon at startup.
