OSX 10.6.8 hangs onto WD Blue 750 GB
I am installing OSX 10.6 onto a new formatted GUID Western Digital Blue 750 GB hard drive. The OSX installers hands at 19 minutes remaining or thereabouts every time. I formatted the new drive with GUID at 500GB and 250GB FAT Windows.

It would be helpful for those who are familier with iMovie to use Blu-Ray discs for burning and playing back their iMovie projects in HD. However, iMovie '11 doesn't have that special feature yet. I hear that 'Final Cut Pro X,' 'Roxio Toast 11 Titanium' and 'Roxio Toast 11 Pro' can copy projects like iMovie onto Blu-Ray, but it would take long periods of time to do that. Professional software, like FCP X and Toast, can be pricey.
I'm hoping that iMovie '11 will burn projects onto Blu-Ray, but will that ever come true?Will iBlu-Ray be an upgrade? OR and update of iDVD?
If it's an upgrade, then that means you'd still pay for it from the Mac App Store. I wish it would only cost between $20-40.
If it's a free update of iDVD, but with the new name, that would be better than to go out and pay for things!!!
However, external Blu-ray recorders would still be required if you were going to burn an iMovie project onto a blu-ray disc.

Is it possible to burn a slide show onto a Blu-ray DVD ?
Using PS8 Premier I could't burn my slide show ( no movies ) with music onto a Blu-ray DVD. The problem seems to be......low memory. ( my computer has 2 Gig but my project which doesn't seem that involved has over 4 or 5 Gig ). The reason I want to burn onto Blu-ray is to get a clearer project than I was able to on a regular DVD. I get a good slide show on my cpu monitor and also on a regular DVD in the smaller screen of the burner program but the project loses resolution when going to full screen. That is why I wanna try it on Blu-ray.
If you are going to BD, then I would start with a BD Preset. This ARTICLE will tell you the supported Frame Sizes, and FPS.
I would choose the 1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 FPS Interlaced (NTSC), or 25 FPS Interlaced (PAL). I would then go to my original stills and Scale them to ~ 1920 x 1080 in PS/PSE. This ARTICLE will give you tips on doing that with automation in either image editing program. Import those Scaled Images into PrE, with the Duration that you feel is correct, depending on the "flow" of the SlideShow. Note: you can tweak that Duration for each Image, if needed, but by planning a bit, most will not need any tweaking. Then, add any Pans, or Zooms (Effect>Motion>Scale, and/or Motion>Position). Add any Transitions desired, and edit any Audio. Add the desired BD Menus and Chapter Markers (no Stop Marker at the end of the Timeline). This Project should burn to BD easily.

Note: in the first linked article, you will see that 20 FPS is not supported, and neither is 1 FPS. You can, of course, make the Duration of each Image 1 Frame, but will probably want the Image on-screen for longer, say 5 - 10 secs. -
After I burn my project from from FCPX onto a blue ray disk, in some scenes ther appears a flickering silver line or edge to some items such as aroiund faces or buildings etc
Precise information on your workflow together with a possible "photograph" of the problem would help with diagnosis.

RMIJDBC -- hanging onto Database connections

We are running an RMIJDBC service which we got from http://rmijdbc.objectweb.org/
Recently we have been having some problems where it looks like the RMIJDBC service is hanging onto connections to an Oracle Database. This is causing the Oracle database to crash when it reaches the connection limit. We are using version 9.2.0.6 of Oracle. We are using Java version 1.4 and RMIJDBC version 2.5
From what I can see there isn't any logging available for this service to give me an indication of what might be wrong. Is it possible to get some logging from the RMIJDBC Service? The only information I seem to get from the logs is the garbage collection information.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem with this service? Any idea what actualy causes it?
Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hang Onto Gnome2...via No Updates...Repercussions
Goal: I want to hang onto Gnome 2 on Arch.
Method: By selectively updating only certain core repo packages ie: kernel26
I've updated one of my Arch installs to Gnome3, and I'm not ready for it full time. Rather that switch DE's or distros, I want to exhaust all options first.
I have read the forums, and see the option of currently, blocking up to 90 packages. Am I correct to see this as a laborious, and daily evolving situation?
So what if I approached this from the opposite end. Assuming I would be content to only update for security reasons, would I still be plagued with breakage?
Example: if Gnome no longer supports gnome2 in any way, could a kernel update possibly break my DE?
What other issues should I be aware of?You would basically be prevented from updating your entire userspace. In the end you'd end up with something that looks very much like Debian. Better to go with Debian I think.
Selective updating is not supported at all. If you know what you're doing, then fine, but if you did you wouldn't be asking this question at all. The safest thing (security aside) is just not to update.
Or, you know, to just take the plunge on Gnome3 or try XFCE or one of the tilers or KDE4. So many options. -
Start-up hangs on a blue screen - any ideas?
My iMac, which is running 10.5.7, is hanging on a blue screen at start-up. Goes through the pale gray Apple screen then cycles between two blue screens, one with the little circular progress bar and the other plain blue. No prior problems.
I've tried unplugging peripherals, reset PRAM, safe mode and repairing disk and disk permissions using install disc, all to no avail. Any suggestions before I try to archive/install?
Update: just found that, with my MacBook connected by FireWire, all my shared info on iMac still visible and fully accessible.

Hi there, when I turn on my computer it just hangs on a grey screen with an apple logo. I didn't install any new software on purpose lately. It initially froze when I moved the mouse to get rid of the screensaver where it had been behaving normally. When the screen saver went away the screen was messed up and everything was frozen and the date and time were huge and distorted. I did a hard reset and I'm just stuck on that grey screen. If I leave it for hours one of the screens turns blue and the other is black, but I can move the mouse. A ghostly image of the cursor is stuck in the top left corner of the screen,
I can boot into safe mode and everything is normal. I reset the PRAM. I verified the discs and the permissions. I don't seem to have any data loss. When I restart normally I still get the grey screen. The only weird thing in the console is 24/09/09 10:59:27 AM kernel unknown SIGSEGV code 0 . I would really like my computer to work. Thank you.Have you run the check for non-Apple kernel extensions suggested above?
It's easy, you just cut-and-paste the command into terminal. If there is any output, you just cut-and paste it back in here.
Linc Davis suggests this as a way to find those non-Apple extensions:
Please copy or drag -- *don't type* -- the following command into a Terminal window, press Return, and post the output (if any):
kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 } ' -

I'm having a little problem.
I have Toast 11 which burns ISO and BDMV folders. I would like to use ISO files for burning. Heres the problem.
In Encore it says I have 4 GB available on the disc. I went and exported an ISP file onto one of my Hard Drives and it came out to be 25.75 GB. Way over what Encore was saying.
I have a 2 and a half hour project as my main timeline and 9 menus.
When it transcodes as it's making the ISO file, does my 2 and a half hour timeline get bigger in file size?
Should I change the transcode settings in Encore for that Video file before I make it an ISO file?
Or should I re-encode my wedding (which is on a Premiere Pro CS 5.5 timeline) but set my Target and Max Bit Rates lower this time around knowing it will be bigger after I make the ISO File?

After breifly attempting a dismantle OSX loads but all I see is blue screen
I sent away for a superdrive because I was told that they were easy to install...
Being essentially technically incompetent, after going through my 13th screw, I decided that I was in over my head. I attempted to open the computer using instructions for opening a 15" PowerBook by leveraging the keyboard... the top didn't pop off like the pretty picture that I saw of the 15"... I then changed my search terms and found a great site that revealed that I was opening the 12" all wrong...
So I put the screws back in and decided it would be best if a professional put the drive in.
At first after restarting the PowerBook all I saw was the blue screen, then I restarted a couple times and was able to log in. Now, after restarting again, all I see is the blue screen. What's odd is that OSX says that it loads, but I'm not prompted to login... just blue. The volume and dimmer function keys still work, though.
I know I'm an idiot. I need your help

Also, try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption. His link will help walk you thru it.

Mac pro still hangs on the blue screen on start up.
Hi.
my mac pro still hangs for ages on the blue screen before the login page where i input my password appears.
i've tried starting up in command-V and that didn't work.
i thought snow leopard was meant to improve, it has just slowed my start up down greatly!
could someone please advise on how to fix this?

Have you tried downloading and re-applying the latest Combo update?
If not, go to the apple download page, find the Combo update (couple of hundred MB) and install it.
This has fixed various issues in the past for numerous users... it might do the trick for you.
After it's installed and rebooted, repair permissions and reboot again.
Also check to see (using software update) if there are no firmware updates available for you.
And, make sure the OS drive's root is clean, just the basic Applications, Library, System and Users folders, no other mess. If there are 'Previous System' folders from earlier Archive & Install situations you might want to remove those.
Finally, if you upgraded from a PowerPC to Intel using the Migration Assistant the symptoms you are describing are very common, the migration assistant well... it ***** :/ -
Unusual hang spot on blue screen.

and now after being stuck on the gray screen of death, I went into single user mode and performed the /sbin/fsck -fy command to repair the disk. after a few minutes, the line "macintosh HD appears to be OK" was returned so I rebooted the computer.
Finally I got to the blue screen, the Mac OSX dialog box popped up but is stuck here. It will not load any further past this point. The status indicator is blank (no little blue bar moving...)
I've done the apple hardware test
repaired the disk from single user and install disk
loaded in verbose mode
loaded in single user mode
done PRAM reset
SMC reset
all get stuck at this same spot
(nothing else connected expect mouse and keyboard)
Safe mode doesn't work (i've decided its because after the start up chime, the apple logo appears and then a minute later the pinwheel appears. I've tried releasing the shift button after each appear and neither work)
anything else I can try??now all I get is the gray screen and immediately a kernal panic

OSX Lion Server app hangs; dock icon shows incrementing counter
I'm running OSX Lion (10.7.3) on a MacMini.
since yesterday, the following concistenly happens: when I start the server app, it says "connecting to the server" next to the spinning wheel at the bottom right corner of the app window. After a few seconds, the app's dock icon shows a red counter (akin to the "unread counter" of the mail app) which is continuously being incrememted, and the (in)famous colored spinning wheel comes up as well: the server app hangs, and shows up as "Not Responding" in the Activity Monitor.
I've checked the System Diagnostic Reports on the Console window, and it reports the Server app as hanging, followed by a few thousand lines of messages ...
Does anybody know what goes wrong, or better, how to resolve this problem??I have the exact same issue. I can see from Console.app, that

Logout hangs on aqua blue screen
when the users logout at their station from their network based home folders it just hangs at the aqua blue screen and needs to be manually restarted, any one no why?
As well sometimes it hangs when they login, it accepts their name and password and then sits and never gets to their environ???I posted this in the user management discussions but it's appropriate here aswell....
"I'm having similar login problems (stalling on spotlight, username & pass not being accepted, stalling at login window after entering password). This has been going on for the last 3/4 months in various degrees.
I've tried manually deleting the /Library/Caches/com.Apple.ATS/ folder and had pretty much the same problem as you so yesterday I spent about 3 hours on all the clients (17 total) performing 1. tiger cache cleaner medium clean off all users, 2. OnyX cleaning of everything , 3. OnyX maintenence (inc. all maint. scripts, reset spot. index & complete system optimisation).
Today I was looking forward / holding my breath to seeing all users login without issue, but no...
1 user unable to login as normal (first name surname, password resulting in shaking window) and had to log in surname_initial.
3 users experiencing long login delays before everything working as normal.
1 user stalling at spotlight (restarted after 5/10 mins and logged in successfully and smoothley)
1 user freezing at login screen after entering user name & password.
Any thoughts? I'm wondering if it's to do with cabling / simultaneous LDAP lookup as i've tried most software base fixes suggested?? Maybe the servers under specced?? (although it seems more powerful servers experience similar problems). I don't know whats going on and it's driving me INSANE!!! Plus i'm begining to loose 14 years worth of faith in apple...
