OSX 10.6.8 to 10.8.2 - Time Machine is empty!

Hi all,
I just updated OSX 10.6.8 to 10.8.2.
To my surprise, Time Machine is now empty. No back up files from previous OS X 10.6.8 appear to have survived the upgrade.
Am I in trouble? Or is there a way of retriving previous backups?
Thanks for your help!
Y

Thanks for this but no, it didn't help.
What worked was following somebody else's advice...disable 'put hard disks to sleep when possible' in the Energy Save System preference. But I'm crossing fingers. I have no idea why it's working now.
It's absurd Mountain Lion is so clumsy in recognising something as crucial as Time Machine's previous back up. Neadlessly stressy. You shouldn't have to fiddle in the hard disc to make this work.
Thanks for everybody's help. Wish me luck.

This can be done easily with ethernet.
    Please follow the instructions strictly.
To make it easier I want you to do this overnight so you can turn off all your current connection to the internet.
Just go to the airport fan in to the top right and turn airport off.
Get ethernet cable and connect the laptop to the TC lan port.. ie <-> ones.
Press and hold the reset on the TC for about 10sec. until the front led flashes rapidly.
Open the airport utility.. go to manual setup and change the wireless to off. (so other people around you cannot join your network of one).
Ignore all the errors.. they won't stop the backup working.
Go to the TM and reselect the backup target disk as the TC.
It should start after 2min and run through to completion.
That is it.. for a backup of many GB it might take a few hours.. so make sure the laptop has power plugged in and the sleep is off.. (on early ones I think this is needed but I am a late arrival to the scene).. sleep doesn't affect later OS.

  • How to remove old backup files from time machine? Lion OSx

    Hi everyone,
I am just wondering how to efficiently and safely remove the old backup files from time machine? I tried once with command, but it damaged my extra-disk... Does Lion OSx have fixed that?
    Many thanks

Time Machine will automatically delete back-ups as the need for space arises. If you want to delete a certain file (application, document, whatever) and have it gone for good you can do that as well.

  • Restore data (iTunes Library, Photo's, files etc.) to Snow Leopard from a Time Machine backup made on OSX Lion?

    Hi,
I have OSX Lion and have been backing up to Time Machine, I now want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard (not from backup), but can I restore my data (iTunes Library, Photo's, files etc.) to Snow Leopard from a Time Machine backup made on OSX Lion?
    Thanks.

You should be able to restore iTunes and iPhoto files if the Lion system was running the same version of those applications that you'll have on the Snow Leopard system.  However, you won't be able to restore files for applications like Mail, Address Book, or Safari, as the versions of those won't match.

  • Restoring OSX SERVER from Time Machine

In the past we had been using a custom rsync script to run our backup rotation (3 drives, at least one off-site every night). Now that we have Leopard server, I've shifted over to using time machine (same 3 drive rotation, but backups happen at a system level, so it "feels" more stable to me (maybe I'm naivé?).
I set up the server, and then due to a little bit of poor planning on my part had to replace the system hard drive, so I basically had to rebuild the server from scratch. I know with Leopard client when you start up you can "restore from time machine", is that possible with Leopard server? It would have saved me a couple of hours. If not I imagine my disaster recovery plan (in case of building fire, etc.) would be:
    1) get a new OSX server leopard
    2) set it up from scratch (turn on AFP, set up users and shares, etc.)
    3) get latest offsite backup drive and restore from time machine (is this even possibly on a different machine?)
Does that sound right? Am I missing something? Is there an easier way with OSX Server to "get back to your latest Time Machine snapshot"? I feel like step 2 shouldn't have to exist...

    Paul,
Thanks for the feedback. Do any of those software packages you mention do incremental backups? Our current rsync solution, and Time machine both do, which is very useful since our data is about 300 gigs and we can have a month's worth of backups on a one gig drive.
I've looked at CCC and the only solution I can find is a complete backup, which basically means:
    a) more than overnight to run a complete backup, just because of the vast number of files being transfered
    b) can only fit 3 backups (at most) on our 1gig drive
Also, can you be a little more specific about what you mean by "gets whacked". Does that mean "Can't use pretty Time Machine interface" or "can't possibly get to your data".
    Thx,

  • I recently updated to Mountain lion 10.8 . I backuped using external hard drive using time machine . I used Lacie drive. I had to format it MAC OSX " extended journaled" before I could back up my dat and after that I backed it up.

    1) I cant seem to restore my data back from Time machine as many files seem Locked. I cant use the Migration app since it doesnt show me my external hard drive when I try to use it. Plus Ive heard that Migration app copies whole drives rather than selecting and copying some folders/data.
    2) Even if i use the time machine to restore the data , It does copy on to my mac but that locked symbol is still there .
    3) I have read that my drive wont show on migration application cuz the OS should be same before and after the backup and there shouldnt be any difference , otherwise the migration app wont show the drive. This is absurd cuz mostly ppl back up because they want to upgrade their computers . It will never be the same , I mean the OSX , cuz after i have done the back there would have been an upgrade .
Can anyone help Linc Davis .

If you mean you're getting the same message:
see #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.   It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.    If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup (especially the destination for the backups), what you've done, and the results.
If that's not the message you're getting, please clarify.

  • Really Apple? OSX 10.8.5 disables built-in camera functionality with third party apps such as Skype and Gmail video chat. I do not have time machine on my 2013 MB Air. How can I get back to 10.8.4?

    Really Apple?
With the release OSX 10.8.5 Apple has once again showed its true colors, and continued its efforts to create a closed Apple system, which eliminates third party vendors, unless, one can only assume... they pay.
Included in this OSX update is the disabling of the built-in camera to work with third party applications such as Skype and Gmail video chat. No surprise the camera works just fine with Apple apps such as Facetime and Photobooth.
The answer I got on my call to AppleCare to ask for assistance in reinstalling 10.8.4, so that I may Skype again, was we can not do that. You can not go back unless you have a time machine bkup.
Can anyone help me get back to to 10.8.4 on my 2013 MB Air?
I do not have a time machine bkup as this computer is not used to store important documents.
    Thank you.

I have an IMAC and I'm running OSX 10.9.2.  I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.  In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.  Is this possible? Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?

I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.

  • After security patch 03/04/2014 OSX 10.7.5, first one, then a second, external backup drive no longer recognized.  Diagnostics for the FireWire one displays brand name of unit, but Time Machine and its own app don't see it.  Where do I start?

Yesterday I installed the security patch, OSX 10.7.5 to my IMac that is about 2 years old.
Today my Seagate BackupPlus for Mac will power on but is not recognized.  It does not show up as a device, Time Machine says the latest backup was DELAYED, last successful at 03/04/2014 9:35 PM (yesterday) and next backup would begin when the disk was connected.  An error message I did not save said basically the drive was not recognized.   I did all drive's  troubleshooting steps, including installing a newer version of their app.  I tried swapping USB for FireWire, changing electrical outlets, etc.
It seems a bit coincidental to have 2 drives "fail" simultaneously.  Is anyone else having this issue after this security patch?  What would be the approach from the Mac side?  TIA for any assistance.
Please see below regarding the second drive.  Is this a red herring, or does it help pinpoint where the failure might lie?
I also have a Seagate GoFlex that WAS recognized until I did the troubleshooting on the other drive.  When I put it back on after testing the other drive with FireWire, it now is no longer recognized.
    Diagnostics says this about that:
    FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed:          Up to 800 Mb/sec
    GoFlex Mac:
      Manufacturer:          Seagate
      Model:          0x6090
      GUID:          0x2037600121908F
Maximum Speed:          Up to 800 Mb/sec
Connection Speed:          Up to 800 Mb/sec
      Sub-units:
    GoFlex Mac Unit:
      Unit Software Version:          0x10483
      Unit Spec ID:          0x609E
      Firmware Revision:          0x111
      Sub-units:
    GoFlex Mac SBP-LUN:
Thirdly, in after one of the testing/reboot loops, the HP WiFi printer was no longer recognized, but after a few more it came back.

    I have a similar problem.
Moreover, as my external drive is split in 2 for (a) regular storage // (b) time machine usage, I can see in the Finder that I can connect to the (a) regular storage part and use it normally (image 1).
And I cannot connect to the backup part in Finder , nor see it in Disk Utility, nor use it in Time Machine (although it's listed in the Time Machine preferences, image 2), as it does not connect (image 3).
    Can somebody help?
